Champion of Missionary Nursing | Legacy Interview with Grace Tazelaar
In this special episode of CCHFTalk, we sit down with Grace Tazelaar—nurse, mentor, missionary, and lifelong advocate for Christ-centered healthcare—for a moving legacy interview titled “Champion of Missionary Nursing.” Grace’s journey into nursing began early, inspired as a child by a visiting missionary nurse who shared stories of caring for the sick and proclaiming the Good News in underserved regions. That spark turned into a calling that shaped her remarkable career—one rooted in compassion, courage, and unwavering faith. Over the years, Grace has trained nurses at the university level, discipled young professionals through , and served in Uganda with the Luke Society during turbulent and dangerous times. Her heart for the poor led her to the Mississippi Delta, where she joined the team at Cary Christian Center, bringing hope and healing to a deeply underserved community. Grace became involved with in its earliest days. She played a key role in promoting the unique role of nurses in missional healthcare and eventually served on the CCHF board during a pivotal season of transition and growth. Even in retirement, Grace remains active with , continuing her lifelong commitment to integrating healthcare and gospel witness. Her story is a powerful reminder: the hope of the weak and the poor is built on the foundation of faithful, humble servants like Grace Tazelaar. If you're a nurse—or anyone called to serve Christ through healthcare—you won’t want to miss this episode. Grace’s life will inspire you to consider your own calling and to pursue a career that is not only clinically excellent but eternally significant. 🙏 Our prayer is that God's Kingdom becomes your pearl of great price—the one thing worth giving your life to. May Grace’s story encourage you to live boldly and sacrificially in Jesus’ name. 🎙️ Listen now, share it with your friends, and don’t forget to like and subscribe. Following God's Call Into Cross-Cultural Ministry | Legacy Interview with Dr. Duane Claassen

Following God's Call Into Cross-Cultural Ministry | Legacy Interview with Dr. Duane Claassen
Duane Claassen has a fascinating story that’s woven throughout the early days of CCHF. He grew up on a Mennonite farm in Central California and followed God’s call to become a doctor. That eventually led him to New Hebron, Mississippi, where he worked with Voice of Calvary—alongside some of the very earliest organizers of CCHF, including H. Spees and others. He presented a workshop at the very first in Washington, D.C., in 1982. There, he met, befriended, and eventually partnered with Dr. Bob Williams, moving to Denver to help launch in the early 1980s. I truly enjoyed my visit with Duane—I hope you will too. I especially appreciated our discussion about what it means to be a Christian health center. It’s more than simply offering prayer or spiritual counsel to your patients. It’s hard to describe unless you’ve experienced it, but it has to do with Christ being the fabric—not just a component or an option, but the very foundation—of everything you do as an organization. That’s a challenging goal, and honestly, we don’t hit it every day. It doesn’t always feel great, but it requires humility, intentionality, and a genuine, thorough reliance on God. And once you’ve experienced that, you understand that it’s worth the effort. If you enjoyed this podcast, please like, subscribe, and share it with others. My prayer is that you will have the experience of knowing Christ as the fabric of your community and your work. Check out the CCHF website at to see a list of clinics that are striving to live out the gospel. And if you work at a Christian clinic, remember your first love. God will restore and refresh. Thanks for listening—I hope to see you soon. ~ Written by Steve Noblett _______________________ CCHFTalk is a production of . Small But Significant Beginnings | Legacy Interview with Ted & Patty Hewson

Small But Significant Beginnings | Legacy Interview with Ted & Patty Hewson
Ted Hewson was officially the first executive director of the fledgling organization known as . CCHF was birthed in southern Mississippi around 1980, but it moved to Philadelphia shortly after its first national conference in 1982. Ted was hired as the first director, but he eventually handed off most of those duties and became part of an early team along with his wife, Patty. Patty had served as a nurse at what eventually became in Philadelphia. David and Libby Caes then took over director responsibilities, organizing conferences and serving as editors of the Health and Development newsletter. Ted and Patty are a wealth of stories and history from the earliest days of CCHF. They were gracious enough to meet me at Esperanza on a Sunday afternoon last summer, and here's a recording of our visit together. In its early days, CCHF was small, under the radar, and largely unheard of. Conferences drew just 30 or 40 people, and the organization had no budget. It was run by young men and women who were bivocational at best. But it was a collection of Jesus-loving idealists who believed in the power of the gospel to change not just individuals, but entire systems. More than forty years later, CCHF remains a low-profile community, most at home in neglected neighborhoods, serving under-resourced neighbors. Yet we do it creatively—integrating our faith with our skills and our gifts, and slowly transforming the institution of medicine. At the time of this interview, there are more than 340 Christian clinics serving vulnerable neighbors with excellence and compassion, anchored in the desire to help people find our true Healer, Jesus Christ. Over 2,000,000 unique individuals are part of this CCHF community. We've grown to where we are today because relationships matter. I hope you’ll come into relationship with others in the CCHF community—receiving and sharing encouragement, wisdom, and insight—so that we become a movement of medical disciples who faithfully represent Christ and His Kingdom to our patients, in our organizations, and to the broken institution of healthcare in our country. Thanks for listening. I hope you make it to a soon—I’d love to meet you! ~Written by Steve Noblett _______________________ CCHFTalk is a production of . Professor in the Hood | Legacy Interview with Dr. Carol Parks

Professor in the Hood | Legacy Interview with Dr. Carol Parks
In the earliest days of , when models of Christian healthcare for the underserved were nearly nonexistent, a small band of pioneers answered a clarion call to serve. Among them was Dr. Carol Parks—a trailblazer in Christian public health whose legacy continues to shape how we understand medicine, community, and mission. Dr. Parks passed away recently, leaving behind a profound legacy of service, scholarship, and Spirit-filled compassion. Her presence, wisdom, and example will be deeply missed by the CCHF community and all who were shaped by her life and ministry. Born and raised in South Philadelphia, Dr. Parks discovered her passion for science early on. By tenth grade, she knew she wanted to work in healthcare. Dr. Parks came to Christ as a child at a neighborhood Bible club, drawn in by snacks and flannelgraph stories. That early faith shaped every step of her journey. From community clinics to the halls of academia, her work was always about more than data. It was about restoring hope. “Hope,” she reminded us, “is often missing in public health. We’ve replaced it with policy. But the gospel brings hope. And when you marry policy and gospel, you have something powerful.” CCHF is what it is today in no small part because of Dr. Carol Parks’ unwavering commitment to that powerful combination. Her life taught us that healing is not just what happens in a clinic— but also in a living room, a neighborhood, and a soul. She showed us what it looked like to be a healer, a teacher, a disciple, and a listener. She showed us how to follow Jesus into the heart of the community. She showed us how to bring hope. We thank God for her life, and we mourn her loss with hearts full of gratitude. We encourage you to listen to this CCHFTalk Legacy Interview and , recorded just a few months before she passed. We hope you enjoy this podcast, follow, like and share with your friends! ___________________________________ CCHFTalk is a production of . Practitioner, Pioneer, & Champion of Prayer | Legacy Interview with Dr. Bill Morehouse

Practitioner, Pioneer, & Champion of Prayer | Legacy Interview with Dr. Bill Morehouse
We can trace the beginnings of the modern movement of opening Christian clinics that integrate faith and medical care to serve those experiencing poverty back to five or six clinics that started in the mid to late 1970s. Bill Morehouse was one of those pioneers who started , a clinic that would serve his vulnerable neighbors in Rochester, New York, and do it in a way that honored Christ and shared his transforming love with broken people. I met Bill about twelve years ago and instantly fell in love with his infectious joy and faith. He does love people, and he spent more than forty years serving and praying for patients in Western New York. I hope you'll enjoy our chat as much as I did. Bill said that in over forty years of patient care, he only had two patients who said they were uncomfortable with him praying for them, and he respected their decision. Our patients need and want someone who genuinely loves and respects them to pray for them. Prayer is a powerful and welcome tool in the Christian health provider's toolkit. Without question, Bill Morehouse is a master at it, but he didn't start that way. He got better at it over time. If you're not comfortable praying with your patients, reach out to Bill or any of us at . We can help you get the training you need to start having meaningful encounters where the presence of God is honored and where people sense his love and power in their lives. By the way, Bill typically saw 20 or more patients a day and still found time to pray for them. And his patients were no different in complexity or spiritual health than yours. My prayer is that you will grow in love, joy, and zeal for Christ and your patients and that you'll have the joy of seeing Christ be the savior and the answer to your patient's complex needs. If you want training, encouragement, and support, we're here to help. Visit our website, drop us a note, give us a call, come to a conference, and be part of this growing movement of living out the gospel through health care among those who are at risk and neglected. The Esperanza Story | Legacy Interview With Ron andCarolyn Klaus

The Esperanza Story | Legacy Interview With Ron andCarolyn Klaus
Legacy Series | Ron & Carolyn Klaus Carolyn and Ron Klaus are the founders of Esperanza Health Center in north Philadelphia. They have a remarkable story of living among people in communities that most people avoid, being changed by their experiences in the community, and stepping into needs that they would never have seen had they not been obedient to God and followed him into unlikely places. They have been pioneers in both domestic and international medical missions, church planting, and Christian community development. I have enjoyed time with them over the years, talking about the Kingdom of God, and how to faithfully live that out in the different seasons of life. I sat down with them on July 4th, 2024 in their kitchen which is covered with maps of east Africa and southeast Asia. And asked them to share their story. Jesus said that the key to living an integral life is to “seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness”. Carolyn and Ron are people whose lives are great examples of that. When they discovered the gospel of the kingdom…medicine, engineering, academics no longer were an end unto themselves, but pathways to express and declare through action that Jesus is Lord over all. If you liked this podcast, please Like and Subscribe and share it with your friends. My prayer is that you will be a follower of Christ who makes learning about, looking for and applying the kingdom of God your top priority. If you want to walk out your calling in healthcare in a way that serves Christ by serving the poorest and most vulnerable of our neighbors, come be part of this CCHF community. Visit the website – CCHF.org – and make plans to join others like you, and like Dr. Klaus, at the next CCHF conference. Recruiting For Mission | Legacy Interview With Dr. Wayne Detmer
If you want a Christ centered organization, it's all about the people you hire. For 4 decades, Lawndale Christian Health Center has been a model for many of the health ministries across CCHF. Dr. Wayne Detmer, the chief clinical officer of operations has been a key player in hiring the right people for their medical team. A team that's kept Lawndale on mission and made it a great place for them to live out their calling. Wayne has been a great friend and a partner in the work. He served on the CCHF board. He's now on his 2nd term. He's always generous with his time and his incredible intellect. I hope you'll enjoy our chat about his journey and his insights into building a mission faithful health center. Setting a culture of calling, being proximate to suffering, bringing the right kind of people into your team. These are the skills that Wayne Detmer brings that makes Lawndale a special place. And is, of course, it's all by the grace of God. If you've never been to Lawndale, I encourage you to visit sometime. Wayne would love to give you the “Buck 50” Tour. I hope you're encouraged to make your organization the kind of place where people who see medicine as a calling to show and share the love of Christ can find a home. If you enjoy this podcast, please like and subscribe and share it with others. I hope to see you at a CCHF event or at one of our annual conferences soon. ~Written by Steve Noblett Watch the video interview of this episode on our YouTube channel _______________________________ CCHFTalk is a production of Christian Community Health Fellowship. Facilitator & Activist | Legacy Interview With Jerry Stromberg

Facilitator & Activist | Legacy Interview With Jerry Stromberg
Legacy Series | Jerry Stromberg I count as one of the greatest privileges in my life to have followed Jerry Stromberg and been mentored by him in the early days of my time at CCHF. Jerry is still one of the most beloved members of the community and one of the most brilliant. His incredible career includes academia, research, consulting. He's been the administrator for several health centers and ultimately led CCHF as its director for better part of a decade. He's an extraordinary person with a deep love and appreciation for people that he's met around the country and around the globe. And he's a man who's lived out his convictions, moving into the Lawndale community, building longitudinal relationships with communities in rural Ghana. He's actually been named an honorary elder in one of those communities. And being an activist for justice issues around poverty and the impact it's had on individual and community health. I caught Jerry in Chicago a day before he was heading to Wisconsin to speak at a conference. And I was really grateful that he made time to talk about his history with CCHF and the way this community has developed and impacted him. I love Jerry. What can you say about a guy who has served as faculty on medical schools, served internationally with the World Health Organization, and invested himself in communities and organizations in distress, and yet when asked what part of his life brought him the greatest pride, it was the times that he was behind the scenes just serving to facilitate connections with people who would solve problems and create models for health delivery that was tailored to communities wracked with poverty and at the same time remain faithful to the gospel and the power and the hope that it brings. If you enjoyed this podcast, please like, subscribe, and share it with your friends. My prayer is that God will use the work done by people like Jerry Stromberg and the other leaders of CCHF to provide a place for medical disciples like you to connect and rebuild healthcare into an institution that reflects Jesus and his kingdom. An institution that reinforces hope and personhood to the most invisible and overlooked people in our country. Come to a CCHF event or or drop us a note and become part of the solution to the brokenness that is healthcare in America. Thanks for listening. Let's change some things. ~Written by Steve Noblett _______________________________ is a production of . Community of Dreamers | Legacy Interview With David Caes

Community of Dreamers | Legacy Interview With David Caes
David Caes was one of the early “dreamers” who saw that CCHF could make a lasting impact on healthcare, within neglected communities and through the church. David used his creative gifts and relational personality to build a network and to help practitioners share their experiences and insights with one another. That has been the hallmark of CCHF ever since. He was editor and a contributing writer for CCHF’s quarterly journal: Health & Development, and published “Caring for the Least of These” and the 1st edition of . Libby, David’s wife, organized annual conferences, and served as administrator for two of the earliest CCHF clinics, Circle Family Health and Lawndale Christian Health Center in Chicago. Through sacrificial work and faithfulness, David and Libby Caes laid a foundation for something that has grown bigger than they ever dreamed. They continue to serve Jesus where they have opportunities, and have represented Christ and his kingdom in every phase of their lives in both Christian contexts and in secular settings. The Lawndale Story | Legacy Interview With Art Jones

The Lawndale Story | Legacy Interview With Art Jones
Legacy Series: Art Jones Host: Steve Noblett The story of began with a group of high school students, a football coach leading a bible study, and a 4th year medical student. That football coach was Wayne Gordon. And that medical student was Art Jones. Art went on to help found , which started out as a clinic that charged just $5 a visit and that worked out of what had previously been a burned out Cadillac dealership. It's an amazing story, and it continues to unfold. Art went on to do his residency in internal medicine and then a cardiology fellowship. And has grown to become a model and a mentor for scores of Christian health centers around the country. It's the largest employer and one of the biggest economic engines in the west-side of Chicago. and he continues to work for systemic change in health care on a macro level. He was kind enough to meet with me recently in original building. We talked about the LCHC’s story, about the influence that CCHF has had on his life and on the development of the health center. He shared his insights on the need for leaders to redesign the way we think about health care delivery. Christian ministry is not at odds with providing the best care possible for our patients and to do it in a financially sustainable way. Art said it makes total sense to do the right thing, to make our decisions based on what we know is right, best for our patients, and to recognize that we have patients who have never passed through our doors and may never pass through our doors. It's easy to understand why Art has been such an inspiration and mentor for so many Christ centered health centers and their leaders. For more than 25 years, Art's leadership at maintained a balance of faith and innovation. My prayer is that we will take up Art's Challenge to rethink and redesign health care access in ways that meet the needs of our patients. If this resonates with your heart, then come to the next and meet others who are willing to be thought leaders and innovators in delivering whole person care that serves even the most vulnerable in ways that reflect the compassion and the justice of God. ______________________________________ is a production of .
