Jesus Christ: The Chief Corner Stone

Jesus Christ: The Chief Corner Stone
In chapter one, Peter describes Jesus as our living hope. Here, in chapter two, he describes our Lord as a living stone who has become the chief cornerstone. Though Jesus was rejected by men, He is chosen and precious to God. To those of us who believe, Jesus is precious, but to those who are disobedient and unbelieving, He is a stone of stumbling and a rock of offense. We too, who are believers in Christ Jesus, are rejected by the world, but we are chosen and precious to God.

Christ Our Living Hope
10/01/2023
Christ Our Living Hope
Peter’s first letter is called a general epistle as it's not written to any one church or person. It’s written to the saints living in the Northern part of Asia Minor (modern Turkey). Peter’s readers were facing persecution for their faith. Because of its focus on suffering, 1 Peter is often referred to as the “Job” of the New Testament. Peter encourages these readers and us to not focus on the trials that we currently face but to look at what God has done to secure our salvation and the living hope that we have to look forward to. Which includes an inheritance that is incorruptible, undefiled, and will not fade away.

All Have Sinned

All Have Sinned
Have we come to the realization that we all have sinned against God? Meaning that we have intended to live our lives our way, ignoring God’s Commandments and the warning that the wages of sin is death. Not just physical death, which we all will experience, but a spiritual death, which is the daily emptiness of a life that eventually begins to have no meaning or fulfillment. Without God in our lives, we cannot experience life as it was meant to be. A kind of existence that is supernatural when God rules and guides our lives. A life that is defined as abundant versus empty. The Apostle Paul is laying the groundwork in his teaching on what life is like without God and what life can be like with God. The statement that there is nobody who seeks after God until God seeks us is the reality of our existence. That is the gateway to Salvation, the Gospel purpose of God, rescuing us from ourselves and our lostness and setting us free from our slavery to sin that ruins our lives.

The Developing Darkness
07/23/2023
The Developing Darkness
The Book of Romans is the most comprehensive book on why Christ had to come and die for our sins. It causes us to see how far humanity has gone away from their Creator and His plan for the human race. We all have been, and are being infected daily by the power of sin and the worship of self. We cannot, apart from the working of the Holy Spirit, comprehend the state of our hearts and the bondage and slavery of sin. Today's teaching will dive deeply into what Paul warns us about, regarding the wrath of God that is already at work on earth. As the wages of sin found in today's rampant immorality and hatred of God truly brings forth destruction in every life that hasn’t experienced forgiveness and deliverance from sin. Every person needs Christ’s perfect work of salvation, bestowing upon the repentant heart God’s immeasurable love and value He has for all those who turn to Him in faith.

Setting the House in Order

Setting the House in Order
Titus, a gentle, was a faithful co-laborer with Paul who was considered a son, a spiritual brother, a partner and helper, and a godly example to believers. Like Timothy, Titus was tasked with the assignment of bringing spiritual order to a Church planted in a pagan and immoral city. Like the Church today, Paul encourages Titus to Ordain godly leaders, teach sound doctrine, and refute false teachers. This is only possible through the power and leading of the Holy Spirit.

Paul’s Miraculous Testimony

Paul’s Miraculous Testimony
After Paul was arrested and brought bound by the governing authorities he was given a chance to speak. The audience he began to testify to was just like before his encounter with Christ. As Paul at one time hated Christians and persecuted them with imprisonment and torture he was now facing persecution himself for preaching Christ as The Messiah. The fact that God had miraculously saved Paul from sin and called him to represent Christ to a lost world after he had spent years persecuting Christians was indeed something people couldn’t comprehend. Acts is a book of miracles and today's study proclaims that!

The Ministry of Encouragement

The Ministry of Encouragement
Today we study the final season of the Apostle Paul’s Ministry. Paul’s heart was always prepared to live his life for God’s Glory and the blessings of others. He planned to meet with all the church plants to make sure things were stable, healthy, Truth based upon the scriptures and spreading the Good News. He realized based on his life of trials and adversity that we all need to be empowered to live by the power of the Holy Spirit. That people need to build up and be loved in the faith. He spent time with the leaders to teach them what he learned from the Lord regarding the responsibilities of being a servant and giving one’s life for the sake of others. We as people are flawed and broken yet Christ loves us without limit in spite of our failings. Only God's grace sent by the Holy Spirit can cause us to grow in grace. Grace changes everything and will make us a little more like Christ. That was Paul’s constant emphasis.

Final Request
This portion of scripture deals with loneliness, abandonment, and persecution. But the mercy of God endures forever. Having assigned missionary destinations to his trusted assistants Paul requested Timothy to be diligent to come to him quickly. Paul was all alone after being forsaken by Demas who turned back to the world. Only God can promise to never leave us nor forsake us.

Preach The Word

Preach The Word
Throughout the pastoral epistles, Paul emphasizes the importance of teaching sound doctrine to Timothy. Paul has made teaching truth the focal point of his ministry. In a time when there were so many false teachers and deceivers it was critical that Timothy sticks to feeding his flock the truth of God’s word. So in Chapter 4, the last commands that Paul would make before being executed, he charges his son in the faith to Preach the Word. We should heed this charge as well. Living in a world where morality is redefined and God’s truth is resisted, we must preach the word.

The Man of God Heeds the Word of God
After declaring that the Perilous times will be characterized by the depravity of false teachers and unbelievers, Paul now encourages Timothy, as well as you and I, to continue in the things he has learned from faithful sources. Paul uses his own life, which Timothy has observed, as an example to imitate. He also reminded Timothy to remember the Holy Scriptures he learned from his youth. We too should consider whether or not our own Christian walk is worthy of others to imitate.

Faith & Conflict

Faith & Conflict
Whenever there is a dramatic change in people’s lives, it begins to impact the normal rhythm of life in all places. In Ephesus, as a result of the Bible study Paul led daily for over two years, people were beginning to change their former interests in idolatry. Instead of spending their money on superstitions and pagan occult trinkets, the new Christians were spreading the Gospel everywhere. This was now impacting the commerce of those who made their living by selling things related to the Temple of Diana. As a result, the anger began to increase, and legal action was being sought to stop the economy from being weakened by the new movement called "The Way." This was a sign of persecution that the believers had to now be prepared to face. What’s the cost today to follow Jesus? It’s beginning to require boldness and perseverance to stand for Christ and His church amid a world that is not following His ways. May we receive Grace and Love to live for the Truth that the world may turn to Jesus and His ways.

Miracles & Riots

Miracles & Riots
The Apostle Paul began a Bible training center in Ephesus where he taught people The Way of Christ. Lives were transformed because of the power of the Holy Spirit transforming lives freeing people from the destructive influences of sin. The Word of God was changing the lives of many people who were forsaking the pagan idolatrous lifestyle of the city of Ephesus. In the midst of this Paul was experiencing the miraculous move of God in and through his ministry and life. The miracles were causing many to flee the sales and marketing businesses of occult literature and the manufacturing of idols. As a result, those who were making their living from glorifying evil were angry because believers were turning from the superstition and deception of purveyors of evil and satanic objects. This presented riots in the streets that were neutralized by the miracles God was pouring out in the city. The forces of darkness cannot deter the move of God. God still does miracles every time the Gospel is proclaimed, it sets captives free!

The School of Ministry
01/15/2023
The School of Ministry
In this chapter, the Apostle Paul begins a School of Ministry to disciple the new believers in Ephesus. During his 3rd missionary journey, he stays in one town for a long time. In order to see Christian’s lives be transformed and become more like Jesus takes time, prayer, and study of the scriptures. We know the work of the Holy Spirit in daily living as He desires to work in and through us wherever we are each day. The local Bible church is not a place we attend for ritual or religious reasons but where God can get through to us to help us have a life worth living. Without the teaching of the Word of God, we all drift away from walking with the Lord and become spiritually dull. The study of doctrine, fellowship, prayer and the Lord’s Supper causes us to become grounded and live in the ways of God. This is what Paul modeled in this chapter.

Perilous Times
Here in Chapter 3, Paul becomes the prophet as he declares the perilous times of the Last Days. Paul discusses the character of the last days and instructs Timothy how to respond. The emphasis of this chapter is on knowledge of the times and Timothy’s responsibility. It’s important that we take heed to what the word of God says about these days and take action according to that knowledge. We are to continue in the things we have learned and been assured of through the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make us wise for Salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.

Grace and Truth
Tradition holds that the Christmas story we all read and love to tell is found in Matthew and Luke. However, The apostle John tells the Christmas story from an eternal perspective. The Word, from all eternity who was, who was with God, and who was God, was made flesh. John gives us all the true reasons to celebrate Christmas. He shares that The Word, who came as a lowly babe, came not to condemn or judge us but came in glory full of Grace and Truth.

The Birth of Christ
12/18/2022
The Birth of Christ
Merry Christmas! We celebrate with all the world the Birth of Our Savior, Jesus Christ. Today we review the key events from the Book of Luke and how it came to pass the miracle of all miracles, God becoming man and dwelling among us. The only way we can be delivered from the bondage of sin and death is to be united through repentance with God Himself revealed to us in the life of Jesus, the only begotten (Eternal Son of God). Jesus always existed. He was not made, but Eternal God within The Holy Trinity. His role within the Trinity was to be The Savior of sinners, all who have been born to realize they were not followers of God by human will or birth. But had to be drawn by the Holy Spirit to know their need for forgiveness and then become Born Again by another miracle of God. Who alone can make all things new and forgive and grant to all who believe in Everlasting Life and become the children of God through a second birth. Christmas celebrates the purpose and absolute necessity of why Jesus was born to become like us, yet without sin. He alone was the only one who could sacrifice His life for us on the cross so we would have the opportunity to be made right with God and be forgiven of our rebellion against the Creator God. As the song said, Born that man May no more may die, born to raise the sons of earth, born to give them second birth!

"Last Words" - Part 3
Paul now discusses with Timothy the characteristics of approved and disapproved workers in the church. Every church has vessels of honor and vessels of dishonor. In this section, we will discuss both. However, the grace of God always gives us an opportunity to be delivered, through repentance, from being a disapproved worker or a vessel of dishonor and become an approved worker or vessel of honor, useful for the Master’s use.

God Raises New Leaders

God Raises New Leaders
In the development of the Church, we learn that nobody is so important that God’s work is impaired when changes occur throughout the centuries. Last week, we saw the difficult breakdown in leadership between Paul and Barnabas, yet God always raises up new leaders to continue His ministry in the Church. Eventually, Paul would be martyred and no longer a physical presence in the early Church, yet God already in Acts 16 made adjustments to the departure of Barnabas and Mark. Now Silas and a young new upstart in ministry named Timothy would eventually carry on the work of the ministry. Jesus said He would build His Church, and the gates of hell would not prevail against it. There is nobody who is so important that the ministry will not continue after their time is completed. Our job is to equip new leaders for the work of ministry so His Church will remain viable long after we are no longer here. Today God may be planning on using you. Are you willing and ready?

Ministry Relationship Fallout
10/30/2022
Ministry Relationship Fallout
The end of Acts 15 is an uncomfortable section of scripture as it deals with division among brothers in Christ. Paul and Barnabas had become very close and had seen God work miracles to bring many to Christ. However, they had an argument because of different personalities and perspectives regarding who to take with them on future outreach. The argument was quite intense, and it separated them from being able to serve together, and as a result, they went different ways. This, unfortunately, happens in ministry and is always painful and discouraging. It also makes the Christian Faith appear hypocritical, as we are to be known as Christians by our love for one another. Fortunately, this division wasn’t permanent, and eventually, they were later reconciled to serve together again. May we always look for ways to be reconciled for the cause of Christ. May we see each other as works in progress and give grace to one another as God grants us. Knowing we’re all flawed, God still desires to use each of us to accomplish His purposes. May we see our fractured relationships made whole again by humility through forgiveness, mercy, and grace.

How the Church Is Built
There are many approaches to building a church by man-made philosophies. They may grow numbers, but they don’t establish disciples of Christ. It is His church and He said He will build it and the gates of hell will not prevail against it. In today's message, we will study what the early church began to do right after the Day of Pentecost when the Holy Spirit was sent down to the believers. It’s the model for developing solid grounded Christians based upon the key elements of spiritual growth by the power of the Holy Spirit.

The Arrest Of Jesus

The Arrest Of Jesus
Can you imagine God being arrested by the very people He created? Yet this had to occur in order for the death of Christ on the Cross to be accomplished. There was no other way for mankind to be redeemed, forgiven, and justified that we might inherit forgiveness of our sin and receive eternal life. The trials, denials, and betrayal were all part of the plan even though we see this as a setup. God the Holy Trinity set everything up for the sake of you and me finding the purpose of our existence. To bring us back into the union, friendship, and peace with our Creator God. To deliver us from the destruction of sin and death and give our lives a beautiful purpose. Peace with God and a relationship with Christ our Savior!

The Last Days - Part 2
In Part 2 of "The Last Days," we continue to look at the Prophetic study of the Last Days viewing history in light of future Eschatology (the study of Christ’s Second Coming) and all that had been written for our admonition. We will take time to study this fascinating chapter that even those closest to Jesus, while He was on earth, were so ignorant regarding His plan to return and establish His Kingdom upon the earth. What is particularly fascinating is that a lot of what is being spoken about in this chapter is becoming evident in the days we now live. So the question many may have today is, are we living in the Last Days?

By Whose Authority?
10/31/2021
By Whose Authority?
In this life, we are aware of various kinds of authority given unto society. We have parental authority, civil authority, political authority, law enforcement authority, and employer authority. Yet, the most significant authority is the authority that comes from our Creator, God Alone. It is this authority that fallen people reject and are ignorant. Jesus' teachings are for the good of all the world and all its people. We live challenging lives, and we at times wonder who is in charge of the people on the earth. Christ alone is the final authority, and His authority is for blessing the world. Today we see the consequences of living outside His authority, and in today’s teaching, we see the results of rejecting and rebelling against His authority. May we bow our knees and hearts to His Will and plan for us, His creation. It is obedience in Christ that is the path of peace and blessing.

Who Do You Say I Am?
Last week, we ended with the declaration that Peter made to Jesus that He is The Christ, The Son of The Living God. Jesus told Peter that the only way he would know this was by direct revelation from God. We are all confronted daily with the Truth that Jesus is Lord of all, yet we live at times as though He isn’t. For us, like Peter, we have to experience daily encounters with the Truth given to us by the Spirit of God through the Word of God. Christ becomes to us not just Savior, but Lord, as we have a relationship with Him. We learn to live in ways that reflect Christ’s Lordship by humbling ourselves in daily living and yielding our will to His will as taught to us from His very teachings found in today’s Gospel reading. We will see and learn things today regarding the power and authority manifest in Christ’s interaction with Peter then with His Father witnessed by Peter, James, and John at The Transfiguration.

Are You The Messiah?
Jesus' ministry is growing and impacting many lives, and His signs and wonders fame is spreading quickly. John the Baptist is in prison and he wanted confirmation that Jesus truly is the Messiah. John was probably anticipating the coming Kingdom of God and wondering why he is still in prison. Faith is weakened by our unbelief. We at times wonder if Jesus has all power and why do we find ourselves in what we perceive as impossible situations? The test of authentic faith is always whether we trust and believe God no matter what is happening in our lives. As John is asking questions, Jesus is speaking to the cities that still were unbelieving regarding His Messiahship. He warned them that as they saw His miracles, and still had unbelief, there would be serious judgement because of what they had seen and still did not believe.

The answers to life’s mystery of aging, sickness, and eventual death, has been answered through Christ’s death and Resurrection!
