Fredericksburg Playoff Series Recap: Game 1: Calallen lost 2-0. Both teams had some of the best pitchers in the region, throwing 65+ mph with movement. Hitters were adjusting. Calallen felt the loss came down to needing better execution of "short game things" and "playing catch". Adjustments: After Game 1, the team analyzed the opponent's pitching and focused on being patient at the plate, only swinging at pitches they wanted. This was a "huge difference". Game 2: A dominant 15-0 win. Fredericksburg pitched their number two pitcher. Calallen's girls "jumped on her so bad," scoring seven runs in the first inning. The Game 1 loss "woke us up a little bit". Game 2 Standouts: Pitcher Bianca Gonzalez threw "amazing" (4 strikeouts, 1 hit). Adrina, BB, and Kadenho hit home runs. BB had two triples, and Kylie Butcher had a triple. Several girls went three for four. Coach Teresa was proud of the girls' bounce back. Game 3: An exciting, "mental battle" in the heat. BB started with a lead-off double. Jordan pitched all seven innings, allowing five hits and recording 13 strikeouts. Game-Changing Moment (Game 3): In the seventh inning, with the score potentially close, Brooklyn Matters hit a "monster" home run that provided "breathing room" and seemed to "take the wind out of their sail". Overall: Calallen won the series. Coach Teresa was proud of how the team adjusted and "got more locked in and better". She believes this series helped prepare them. Preview of the Upcoming Liberty Series: Opponent: Calallen faces Liberty. This is an unexpected matchup due to district realignment. History: Calallen lost to Liberty 4-1 earlier in the season. Liberty's Recent Performance: They are a "great team", and have only given up two runs in their last three playoff games. Calallen's Perceived Advantage: Calallen has experience playing a series, while Liberty has only played one game per round in the playoffs. Facing strong pitching in the previous series helps Calallen prepare. Significance: This is a "big one," potentially featuring one of the best teams in 4A. They are glad it's a three-game series to determine the best team. Team Mindset: The girls seem focused, excited, and working hard. They understand what's at stake and feel prepared. Series Logistics: Format: This is the first time playing a series in a state round, requiring the team to set things up themselves. Schedule & Location: The three-game series is Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday in Kyle. Travel: Due to graduation on Thursday, Calallen must travel back and forth between games, which isn't ideal but preferred over playing back-to-back games on a Saturday. Home/Away: They will alternate, Calallen home Wednesday, Liberty home Friday, flip for Saturday if needed. Timing: Playing the first game on Wednesday feels "quick" and "a little weird". Conclusion: Both Coach Teresa Lentz and Chris anticipate a competitive series Call the fan feedback line 713-568-6361 and let us hear what you have to say! produced by Fresh Media Works http://www.freshmediaworks.com

Overcoming Challenges: He notes that being slightly undersized can be a challenge but believes his performance numbers, especially from last year, help make up for it. He is aiming for even better numbers this year. Support System: His parents are very supportive and push him to improve. Dream: Chris has been dreaming of playing college football for a long time. Recruiting Journey: Before & After Pro 7 Sports Before Pro 7 Sports: Chris's recruiting efforts before joining Pro 7 Sports were inconsistent. This included attending camps occasionally and relying on his high school recruiter, who he felt wasn't very effective. There wasn't a consistent plan in place. After Joining Pro 7 Sports: Joining the Pro 7 Sports recruiting family has made a significant difference. Chris feels much more open to opportunities and has seen more opportunities come his way. He highly recommends Pro 7 Sports, feeling well-treated and supported by a team behind him. Understanding the Recruiting Process It's Not Easy: Chris emphasizes that the recruiting process is not simple. Consistency is Key: Athletes need to be consistently engaged in the process, ideally daily if time permits, but at least weekly. Persistence Pays Off: It's important not to get frustrated if coaches don't reply immediately. When athletes demonstrate their skills ("show your play"), coaches will find them, especially when using a good recruiting strategy or strategist like Pro 7 Sports. Chris's Goals (Academic & Athletic) Chris is focused on attending college, whether for sports or academics. He is considering majoring in fields such as law, business, or analytics. Academically, he aims to maintain straight A's and his current class rank, which is around 50. He hopes to continue receiving scholarship opportunities from different schools. The coach adds that it's not just about playing ("balling") but setting yourself up for life. Message to College Coaches Speaking directly to college coaches, Chris states that bringing him into their program would mean getting: A leader. Someone 100% dedicated ("tapped into") to the program. A necessary player to keep the team performing at its best ("tippy top shape"). A team player. Someone with a great work ethic who will earn his way into a starting spot. Actionable Tips for Athletes & Parents ("Gym Drops") The coach provides three key tips for navigating the recruiting journey: Clean up your social media ASAP: College coaches will look at your social media to learn about you. Make sure it reflects positively on you. Design an attention-grabbing highlight video: Your highlight video should be created specifically to capture the interest of college coaches, not just for your own enjoyment. Be realistic: Understand the appropriate level of play for you. While having dreams is important, recognize how recruiting works now. If you initially pursue a D2 path instead of D1, you can still strive to perform at a D1 level within that program and potentially transfer later via the transfer portal to reach your desired destination. Being realistic is often the hardest tip for athletes and parents. The Pro 7 Sports Philosophy & Call to Action Recruiting is described not as luck, but as a combination of strategy, execution, and exposure. If you or your athlete are struggling to figure out the process alone, it's recommended to get a strategy built by someone who can help. Pro 7 Sports Recruiting helps build a proven strategy. To potentially be featured and evaluated for scholarship opportunities, athletes should get on the college prospect report by visiting collegeport.com/questionnaire. The episode closes with the reminder that today's actions shape tomorrow's success and that waiting can kill a dream, urging listeners to take action now. produced by Lone Star Gridiron http://www.lonestargridiron.com

Jason Richards: Muleshoe, Colby Davis: Lewisville ISD, Greg Voyles: Wink Season 5 Episode 11 In this episode, Brian Gibson, Athletic Director at Wink High School interviews Jason Richards of Muleshoe, Colby Davis of Lewisville ISD, and Greg Voyles of Wink. Participants: Brian Gibson: Athletic Director (AD), Wink High School (Moderator) Jason Richards: AD and Head Football Coach, Muleshoe High School Colby Davis: Associate Athletic Director, Lewisville ISD Greg Voyles: Defensive Coordinator, Wink High School Main Themes: Evaluations as a Growth Tool: The conversation emphasizes moving away from the perception of evaluations as punitive and towards seeing them as opportunities for development for both coaches and programs. Building Relationships and Trust: Open communication, transparency, and fostering trust between ADs and coaches are crucial for effective evaluations and creating a culture of continuous improvement. Beyond Wins and Losses: Evaluating coaches should go beyond mere win-loss records to encompass aspects like player development, program culture, community engagement, and contribution to the overall school environment. Pre-Season Evaluations: The concept of pre-season evaluations setting expectations and goals, and identifying areas of needed support from the AD was highlighted as a valuable practice. Key Ideas and Facts: Importance of Self-Reflection: Coach Richards emphasizes the importance of self-assessment for coaches, stating, "I think it's real important to do those evaluations and talk about growth immediately once that season is over." Addressing Defensiveness: Coach Davis advises coaches to view negative feedback as a chance for growth, noting that "It's the coach's response to that negative feedback [that] tells me a whole lot more about the character of that coach." Proactive Feedback: Coach Voyles encourages coaches to actively seek feedback even if not explicitly offered, suggesting they "ask your AD or ask coaches, hey, how's everything going in your eyes?" Culture of Openness: Coach Richards advocates for an open-door policy where coaches feel comfortable discussing their performance and seeking guidance. He emphasizes that "Coaching the coaches is harder than coaching the kids." Addressing the "Win Now" Mentality: Coach Davis highlights the importance of focusing on intangibles beyond wins, stating, "I think the intangibles are the things that are so important... how these coaches are interacting with the community, how they are contributing to the overall campus culture.” Key Evaluator Questions: Coach Voyles suggests asking open-ended questions like "What they think or how their program went this year" to encourage self-critique and facilitate a productive discussion. Documentation and Pre-Season Evaluations: Coach Richards underscores the importance of documentation, particularly for addressing performance issues. He expresses interest in Coach Davis's pre-season evaluation model that sets clear expectations from the start. Transparency and Trust: Coach Davis emphasizes the importance of transparency from the AD, stating "We need to foster trust and a culture of continuous improvement." Identifying Leadership Potential: Coach Davis points out that evaluations can help identify future coaching or athletic administration leaders by revealing insights into a coach's strengths and areas for development. Actionable Insights: Implement pre-season evaluations to establish clear expectations and goals. Encourage self-reflection and proactive feedback-seeking among coaches. Foster a culture of open communication and trust between ADs and coaches. Focus evaluation on holistic program development, including culture and player growth, not just wins and losses. Utilize evaluations as a tool for identifying and nurturing future leaders within the athletic department. S04E05 - Oli Pettigrew
S04E05 - Oli Pettigrew (That Englishman in Texas) Join Chris as he talks with movers, shakers, news makers and just people he finds cool. Hear their unique and inspiring stories. In this episode, Chris Doelle welcomes Oli Pettigrew, also known as "That Englishman in Texas". Oli discusses his fascinating life journey and how he became "that Englishman" people recognize. Key topics covered include: Oli's Diverse Upbringing and Family History: Oli shares his unique background, having been born in Hong Kong and living in the UK, Singapore, and Arizona. His family history is also spread across places like Persia, Russia, Delhi, and Hong Kong. He mentions a possible direct descent from Lewis Morris, a signer of the Declaration of Independence and founder of Canada. The Significance of a Gap Year: Oli explains the concept of a gap year, common in the UK, Australia, and New Zealand, where students take a year off between finishing high school and starting college. He highlights how a gap year can lead to personal growth and open up unexpected paths, noting that those who take one often appear more "grown up" and "open-eyed" in college. Oli's own gap year in Hong Kong was pivotal, leading him into modeling. From Modeling to TV Host: Oli recounts how a modeling opportunity during his gap year, where he was paid ÂŁ50 an hour compared to ÂŁ5 an hour working in a bar, launched his career. He picked up work because he fit the look they wanted at the time. Modeling led to TV commercials and eventually a 17-year run hosting TV shows across Asia. He hosted dozens of shows on channels like Discovery Channel, Food Network, HBO, and Cinemax, and was the Cash Cab Asia driver. He won awards for his TV work. The Transition to "That Englishman in Texas": After 8 years working on a TV show in Arizona, which ended in 2022, Oli moved back to Texas and started "That Englishman in Texas" from nothing. The project involves telling stories about Texas, its history, mindset, and people, approaching nearly 300,000 followers. He feels a responsibility to tell these stories, considering himself the unofficial Texas ambassador. He notes that while he initially thought he was telling stories for non-Texans, he realized he is also telling them to Texans, offering an outside perspective that helps them appreciate and feel proud of their state. Embracing the Texas Mindset: Oli is drawn to the unique Texas mindset. He shares that the Texas state motto is "Friendship," derived from the Caddo Nation word "tesa" meaning friend and ally. He declares that Texas is the friendliest place he has ever been after visiting 50 countries. He agrees with the idea that Texas is not just a state, but a state of mind. He even got "baptized as a Texan" on Texas Independence Day in Huntsville. Slowing Down and Finding Balance: Having experienced burnout from a high-intensity TV job, Oli discusses learning to slow down since moving to Texas. He enjoys his life on 2.5 acres with chickens and dogs. While his current work for "That Englishman" is demanding as he is the writer, creator, editor, and handles business, he appreciates the ability to take breaks and manage his own schedule for creative output. The Challenges and Rewards of Self-Employment: After the sudden end of his TV show, Oli faced unemployment and depression. "That Englishman" has helped him make forward progress. He finds his current role challenging but also freeing because he is in charge, allowing for custom solutions and direct interaction with partners like cities and brands such as HB. He values collaboration and believes in the philosophy that "a rising tide raises all boats". A Life of No Regrets and Future Dreams: Oli feels incredibly lucky to have ticked off "damn near everything" on his bucket list through his travels and personal life, including marriage, kids, and adoption. He and his wife feel they have lived life "in reverse" and would die with no regrets. A remaining item on his bucket list is owning a pristine late '60s or early '70s American muscle car, particularly mentioning the '69 Camaro, Mustangs, and Trans Ams like the one from Smoky and the Bandit. He also has a soft spot for the Blues Mobile from The Blues Brothers. If you've ever thought about starting your own podcast, Fresh Media Works can help you grow your brand and spread your message. In this episode, host Chris Doelle talks with Coach Teresa Lentz about the recent playoff series and the upcoming challenge. Needville Series Recap Coach Lentz is feeling good and excited after the team's performance in the last round. They secured a solid win against Needville, taking both games with scores of 7-2. Game 1 (Friday night): Played at home with a great crowd. Needville initially took a two-run lead. Coach was proud of the girls for staying in control despite Needville's speed and power. The team scored three runs in the third inning to take a 3-2 lead, added two more runs, and then two extra runs in the sixth inning to seal the win. Key Player Performances (Game 1): Jordan: Pitched, had six strikeouts, and allowed only five hits against a tough hitting team. Also hit a home run. Chris: Made two awesome sliding catches in the outfield. Brooklyn Meador : Went two for four. Also hit off the wall. Kylie Butcher: Had two RBIs and went two for three. Also hit a home run. BB: Went two for three with stolen bases. Also hit off the wall. Adrina: Had two walks as Needville seemed to avoid pitching to her. Kaden: Got a nice hit off the wall. Kiana Vargas: Hit a home run. The team displayed high intensity and focus, hitting the ball hard, described as "intimidating". They saw all three of Needville's pitchers. Game 2: Played in a different setting and field, but resulted in the exact same score, 7-2. Calallen started differently, scoring two runs in the first inning. Key Player Performances (Game 2): Bianca (pitcher): Was on fire, with her pitches being very difficult for Needville to hit. She shut them down for four innings, striking them out frequently. She finished with six strikeouts and kept Needville off balance. She also reached a significant milestone, potentially her 600th or 700th strikeout. BB: Went four for two (likely meaning four hits or four plate appearances, two hits based on game 1 performance) with one RBI. Audrina: Had two RBIs. Kiana: Had an RBI. Brooklyn: Went three for four with an RBI. There were no home runs in Game 2, potentially due to wind blowing in, but the girls were still hitting the ball hard. The team had 11 hits. Needville's freshman starter pitched the entire game. The Calallen girls didn't ease up even after Needville scored runs in the fifth, adding two or three more runs to secure the win. Health Update The team is mostly in good health. However, there is concern for Lizzie Smith, one of the team's fastest players who excels in the outfield and on the bases. She might have a torn hip or labrum, potentially related to her high jump participation. The team is hoping for good news from the doctor and that she only needs rehab rather than surgery, though the potential injury does hurt the team slightly. Upcoming Game: Regional Quarterfinal vs. Davenport The next opponent is Davenport, and Coach notes that at this stage of the playoffs, no team is a pushover. Calallen needs to focus on playing their game. Davenport's Pitcher: Throws in the mid-50s with significant movement, a tight spin, and stays away with a curve or drop curve, also mixing speeds. She hits her spots, which could challenge Calallen's lineup. Keys to Victory: Putting the ball in play with runners in scoring position, executing, making routine defensive plays, and the pitchers hitting their spots. Coach emphasizes the need to focus as nothing is guaranteed in the playoffs. Game Details: Location: Three Rivers High School (a middle ground site). Field: Turf field (the team hasn't played there before). Format: A one-game series. Visitor Status: Calallen will be the visitor after losing the flip. Date and Time: Friday at 6:30 PM. Significance: This is the regional quarterfinal, a crucial game to advance to the regional final. Playoff Series Format Discussion The decision on whether to play a one-game or three-game series in the playoffs is determined by a flip (odd or even) between the teams. This can happen all the way up until the state championship game. Previously, this option was only available up to the state semi-final, but now the state semi-final can also be a series for the first time. While most teams often prefer a one-game series depending on their strategy, Coach Lentz noted that regardless of the format, the team still needs to win and "beat the best" to advance. Coach Lentz is excited for the upcoming game and appreciates the support.
