Awaken and Align is a podcast hosted by Laura Chung that features healers, artists, mystics, astrologers, and activists who are here for collective liberation. Our intention is to share stories that center people of the global majority and spiritual wisdom to incite change. Laura Chung is a Reiki master, astrologer, and author of How To Manifest published by Union Square & Co. She has her Masters of Science in Industrial and Organizational Psychology. She is an activist who uses her various media platforms to share spiritual wisdom and decolonial education toward collective healing and liberation. As a multi-disciplinary healer, Laura helps people to transcend their past and transform their current situations; breaking generational cycles and harmful patterns. Her intention is to help people manifest the life of their dreams. Cha with Sammy Kim Sammy Kim (they/them) is a multifaceted individual: a queer artist, writer, healer, sex worker, community organizer, caregiver, and friend. From a young age, Sammy took on a caregiving role when their mother was diagnosed with Parkinson’s, moving in with relatives as her condition progressed. Seeing their mother struggle with her health, Sammy naturally came into a role of caregiving, grounding themselves in gratitude while extending empathy towards their family. By their pre-teen years, Sammy knew they were queer but felt compelled to hide it due to their Christian upbringing, even trying to "ungay" themselves to avoid eternal damnation. Operating out of fear, Sammy didn't come out to their parents until their mother approached them about it, by which time they had been living openly for three years. Although their mother struggled to accept this part of Sammy, she affirmed her love, signaling a need for more time to understand. Through sex work, what began as a caregiving role to provide for men seeking to feel wanted eventually evolved into a way for Sammy to heal from their early childhood trauma of sexual abuse. Their work became a way for them to deeply question their relationship to the sexualization tied to their identities. As Sammy continues to unravel the many intersections of their experiences, they choose with intention to feel alive in the present, living in the joy that stems from simply being themselves without distraction. Cha with Jungwon Kim Jungwon Kim is an award-winning writer and cultural worker. She is also a communications leader, organizational strategy consultant, and journalist who has dedicated her professional life to human rights and environmental advocacy. As Head of Creative & Editorial at the , she directed a multimedia team of writers, videographers, and graphic designers. Earlier in her career, she served as the editor of ’s human rights quarterly that featured the work of award-winning journalists and documentary photographers (circulation 300,000). She began her storytelling career as a newspaper reporter, magazine editor, and on-air correspondent for nationally syndicated public radio programs. Through her consulting practice, , she develops tailored impact strategies (social, environmental, narrative), facilitates organizational and team retreats, and provides mindfulness-based leadership coaching to individuals. Jungwon currently serves as the board chair of , a nonprofit organization that builds narrative impact in the documentary film sector, and a board member of the , which works to build racial and socioeconomic equity in public health outcomes. She did her undergraduate and graduate studies (B.A. Philosophy, dual M.J./M.A. program in Journalism and East Asian Studies) at the University of California, Berkeley, where she was awarded a Fulbright Fellowship in support of her graduate research on self-censorship in the Hong Kong news media, a Foreign Language Area Fellowship, and a Korea Foundation Fellowship.
