Tribute 80: Robert Redford
In our latest tribute, Janet, John, (and Pen) celebrate the life and career of the amazing actor, producer, director, politcal activist and founder of the Sundance Film Festival... Robert Redford! Though born in Santa Monica, California on August 18th, 1936, this future star often spent his summers with his grandfather in Austin, Texas. Often contributing his time there to being the catalyst for his environmentalist activism and general love of nature. After many wild and traumatic events during his childhood, Redford went to the University of Colorado Boulder to play baseball. Opting to have his educational track be in the arts. However, a recurring problem with alcohol led to this budding artist losing his scholarship, forcing him to leave school entirely. Nevertheless, Redford made the most of his time away from university, choosing to study painting in Europe. Specifically that of France, Spain, and Italy. When he eventually went back to school, Redford was quickly disparged by one of his painting professors. This caused him to become unsure of his commitment to art. However, he used these feelings of uncertainity and set his sights on set design, this ultimately becoming the catalyst to his eventual career in acting. By around 1959, Redford would play a small role in the play, Tall Story (1959), that he would eventually reprise in a movie adaption in 1960--- this being his film debut. From there Redford would go onto being a part of many films such as War Hunt (1962) and Inside Daisy Clover (1965), Barefoot in the Park (1967), Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969), Downhill Racer (1969), Jeremiah Johnson (1972), The Candidate (1972) and The Sting (1973), with the last earning him an Academy Award nomination. Encore! Encore! This February Janet, John, (and Pen) wanted to revist the spectacular life and career of this absolute Queen of Rock and Roll... Tina Turner! Born on November 26. 1939 in Brownsville, Tennessee, this star was the youngest of three daughters. Her childhood characterized as frenetic and unstable due to her parents' work and personal lives. By the age of 16, Anna Mae (Tina Turner's birth name) was enamored with the nightclub scene. There she met Ike Turner, who invited her to be a backup vocal for his band after she stole the microphone from him and sang out "You Know I Love You," by B.B. King. By 1960, Anna Mae found her first big break when she stepped in for a missing vocalist on the track, "A Fool in Love." Soon she was rebranded as Tina Turner and continued performing with Ike Turner in their band, Ike & Tina Turner Revue. Unfortunately this stint in stardom came to an end, as Turner's marriage to Ike to a turn for the worst. To keep herself afloat during their separation, Turner continued to sing and perform as a celebrity guest on game shows and sitcoms— one of her happiest times. Turner found her big break into stardom again when she released a cover of Al Greene's "Let's Stay Together." From there, Turner would go onto release multiple sucessful albulms like Private Dancer and What's Love Got to Do with it— in which a single off the latter would garner Turner three grammys! She would also appear in George Miller’s Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome (1985), for which she also wrote two hit songs. This week Janet, John, (and Pen) dive into the life of the zeitgeist of zeitgeists, the legendary, revolutionary, groundbreaking, funny force of nature who sang like a blue angel, our logo….Marlene Dietrich! Born on December 27, 1901 at Leberstraße 65 in the neighborhood of Rote Insel in Schöneberg, now a district of Berlin, Dietrich became one of the most iconic figures in the entertainment industry, known for her distinctive voice, smoldering sex appeal, glamorous style, and androgynous allure. Originally planning to become a classical violnist, an injury turned our starlet to theater. After a failed audition for Max Reinhardt, Dietrich got her start as a chorus girl in his theaters, but never seemed to get her big break on the stage. She moved her career towards film, acting in So sind die Männer (1923) and The Tragedy of Love (1923), while still maintaining a career on the stage and in cabaret— embodying the "New Women" lifestyle. By 1930, She got her big break in the film Der Blaue Engel (The Blue Angel) after film director, Josef Von Sternberg saw her performance in Zwei Krawatten (Two Ties). She would go on to act in Morocco (1930), Dishonored (1931), Blonde Venus (1932), The Scarlet Empress (1934), The Devil Is a Woman (1935), A Foreign Affair (1948), Stage Fright (1950), Witness for the Prosecution (1957), Touch of Evil (1958), and Judgment at Nuremberg (1961). She was also nominated for a best actress cast in 1932 for Morocco, Golden Globe and a Laurel Award in 1958 for WItness for the Prosecution. Tribute 79: Burt Bacharach
In our latest tribute, Janet, John, (and Pen) celebrate the life and career of an extremely talented musical genius who wrote some of the most iconic and enduring songs of the 20th century... Burt Baharach! Born in Kansas City, Missouri on May 12th, 1928, Burt seemed to be destined for greatness. Encouraged by his amateur painter and songwriting mother, Burt took up practicing piano, drums, and the cello during his childhood. Using his musical gift, Bacharach continued his education at McGill University in Montreal, Mannes School of Music, and the Musica Academy of the West studying all kinds of music. At the age of 28, he was reccomended to Marlene Dietrich (fun fact: the star our logo is modeled after!) by Peter Matz as she needed an arranger and condutor for her nightclub shows. After becoming her part-time musical director, Baharach and Dietrich toured worldwide together, on and off, until the early 1960s. Eventually this musical genius met Hal David and Dionne Warwick. This trio would make songs that would sell over 12 million copies and have 39 consecutive chart hits. Some of those songs being “Anyone Who Had a Heart” (1963), “Walk On By” (1964), “Message to Michael” (1966), “I Say a Little Prayer” (1967), “Do You Know the Way to San Jose” (1968), “This Girl’s in Love with You” (1969) and “I’ll Never Fall in Love Again” (1969). Eventually this composer moved towards creating scores for film such Casino Royale (1967) and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969), which won them a Academy Award, an Oscar, and a Grammy for best score. In his lifetime, Burt would go onto to creating many wonderful songs, gain many nominations, and win many awards for his absolutely outstanding music. Encore! Encore! This January Janet, John, (and Pen) wanted to revist the astounding life this actress with her 80-year long career in film, television, and the stage... Angela Lansbury. This English-born, though Irish-bred actress began her career, after escaping the Blitz by moving to United States, at the age of eighteen by playing a cheeky Cockeny servant to Charles Boyer in the thriller Gaslight (1944). This role brought her a contract with MGM and her first Academy Award nominaton for best supporting actress. At the time, she was seen as a b-list actor, but her role in The Manchirian Candidate (1962) put her on the map and is often considered, to this day, one of her best perfomances. She also quickly gained stardom for her lead role in the Broadway musical Mame in 1966, a catergory of performance she absoluted dominated. This role lead to her winning her fist every Tony Award. However, this starlet didn't stop only at theatrical appearances. In fact, she made her way to worldwide fame after playing the sleuth, Jessica Flecther, in the American whodunit series Murder She Wrote. The show ran for 12 seasons until 1966. Earning it the title of one of the longest-running and most popular detective dramas in television history. Some of Lansbury's projects include, Dear World, Gypsy, Sweeney Todd, National Velvet (1944), The Picture of Dorian Gray (1945), Nanny McPhee (2005), and Mary Poppins Returns (2018). Encore! Encore! This December Janet, John, (and Pen) wanted to revist the astounding life of the director of A Warm December, an extremely talented actor, activist, and diplomat... Sidney Poitier! Born in Miami, Florida on February 20th in 1927, this Bahamian-American actor changed the game for black actors forever in the motion-picture industry by becoming the African American to win the Academy Award for best actor and the first Black movie star. Even though he seemed destined for the stage and stardom, Poitier worked hard to amass such a massive career in Hollywood. He got his start in the American Negro Theatre after applying for the second time after a previous rejection because of his accent (which he worked on changing to American pronounciation for six months). While studying acting, he made his Broadway debut in Lyrsistrata in 1946. His first film role was as Dr. Luther Brooks, a hospital’s only Black doctor who treats a bigoted white cirminal, in No Way Out (1950). His refusal to play into racial sterotypes helped create inroads for Black people into American media culture. He later starred, worked in, and directed many films such as, Porgy and Bess (1959), A Raisin in the Sun (1961), and A Patch of Blue (1965), A Warm December (1973), Uptown Saturday Night (1974), and Stir Crazy (1980). He also went onto winning the Academy Award for Best Actor for Lilies of the Field (1963). He also received a Grammy Award, two Golden Globe Awards, and a British Academy Film Award! Born in Chicago to a filmmaking and author mother and a veteran/firefighting father, this actor went against the grain during his rather chaotic upbringing and got his start in theater. Specifically with the Steppenwolf Theatre Company as John Malkovich's apprentice. His first noteworthy role being that of a small role in the science fiction film, WarGames. After that he continued acting in small roles for films and television shows until he eventually launched his career by playing Bump Bailey in The Natural (1984). He then went onto to starring in Quentin Taratino's directoral debut film, Reservoir Dogs, as Mr. Blonde. A role that quickly changed his status from actor to cultural icon. He later starred and worked in many films such as, Species (1995), The Getaway (1994), and Donnie Brasco (1997), Kill Bill Vol. 1 (2003) and 2 (2004), Sin City (2005), and many more. He also went onto winning a couple of awards, one being the New York International Independent Film & Video Festival for Best Actor for his role in Strength and Honor (2007) in 2008. In our latest tribute, Janet, John, (and Pen) celebrate the life and career of the wonderful singer, actor, television heartthrob, and queer icon because of his heart-touching memoir, Shattered Love... Richard Chamberlain! Born in Beverly Hills in 1934, this American heartthrob didn't start off with an amazing childhood. In fact, even though he was a track star, earning four letters in both high school and college, he recounts his childhood as an unhappy one. Citing that he often struggled in school. Additionally, even with a 60-year-long future career in Hollywood, this actor did not orginally have acting on the brain. It wasn't until he started studying at Pumona College did he discover acting and his deep love for the craft. He, however, wasn't able to pursue this love until after his 16 month stay in Korea after he was drafted into the Army in 1956. After some minor stage experiences, he became a teen idol on the show Dr. Kildare (1961-66), playing the titular character of the same name. He went on to earn the name, "King of the Mini-Series," with his work in Centennial (1978), Shōgun (1980), and The Thorn Birds (1983). He also starred and worked in many films such as, The Three Musketeers (1973), The Four Musketeers (1974), and The Return of the Musketeers (1989), King Solomon's Mines (1985) and Lost City of Gold (1986), The Bourne Identity (1988), and The Last Wave (1977), some of these he would earn an award nomination for. Diane Keaton! With a 60-year long career in Hollywood, this actress was always destined to one day be under the limelight, but after seeing her mother win Mrs. Los Angeles her resolve to become a part of the dramatics of performing at a young age only strengthened. She participated in singing and acting club during high school and continued to perform anywhere she could until she was cast as an understudy in the production of Hair (1968). From there she began to rise in the broadway eye, soon being nominated for a Tony as the Best Featured Actress in a Play for her role in Play it Again, Sam (1969). She truly couldn't be stopped as she moved from the stage to the screen with her debut film, Lovers and Other Strangers (1970). Soon after she was being cast in Francis Ford Coppola's The Godfather (1972) as Kay Adams-Corleone and Woody Allen's Annie Hall (1977), which combined together launched her into stardom and earned her the Oscar for Best Actress in a Leading Role. Some of her other fantastic films are Looking for Mr.Goodbar (1977), Reds (1981), Manhattan (1979) , The First Wives Club (1996), Finding Dory (2016), Book Club (2018), and many more. In our latest tribute, Janet, John, (and Pen) celebrate the life and career of the actor who played one of the most iconic villians in horror film history... Tony Todd! Desperately desiring to be an actor since he was a little boy, this New England native went from working at the Artisits Collective as a teen to joining the Eugene O'Neill Actors Institute to hone his acting skills. At 28, this brilliant character actor landed in New York City and in two weeks was working on stage in equity shows: playing in Shakespeare’s greats or the latest new plays. He was later discovered by Oliver Stone and switched to a life of film, soon becoming a beloved member of Star-Trek and a big star from one of the scariest horror remakes ever. His amazing skills and complex character work in Candyman (1992) would take him on 30-year-old journey with 4 spectacular sequels. He is also well know for his roles in other fantastic films, video games, and shows such as Night of the Living Dead (1990), the Final Destination series (2000-2025), Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (2009), Star-Trek: The Next Generation (1990-1991), The Flash (2014-2023), and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle (2024). In our latest tribute, Janet, John, (and Pen) celebrate the life and career of a very culturally edgy producer, screenwriter, and director of film, television, and opera who was closely identified with the "New Hollywood" movement of the 1970s... William Friedkin! Inspired by Citizen Cane as a child, he threw away his "bad boy" ways from high school and began his career in media by working for his local news station at 16, moving onto directing a live television series and docuseries, The People versus Paul Crump (1962). From there he went on to direct an episode of The Alfred Hitchcock Hour and then his first feature, Good Times (1967) staring Sonny Bono and Cher. Friedkin would go on to make a fantastic crime thriller, The French Connection (1971), which would then win him five Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. He is also well known for his Academy Award nominated film The Exorcist (1973) and other films spanning multiple other genres like The Boys in the Band (1970), Sorcerer (1977), The Brink's Job (1978), Cruising (1980), To Live and Die in L.A. He continued to find success in the music industry before transitioning to scoring films with Charitos of Fire in 1981, for which he would win Best Original Score at the Academy Awards. His career was launched to new heights and would continue making music for classic moves movies such as Blade Runner (1982), Missing (1983), Antarctica (1983), The Bounty (1984), 1492: Conquest of Paradise (1992), and Alexander (2004). His career in music spanned over 50 years, making him one of the most important figures in modern film music. His career page on the stage, beocming the youngest person at the time to be accepted into Juilliard, and get his start in an off-Broadway musical The Slab Boys (1983) with Kevin Bacon and Sean Penn. His overnight breakthrouhg came with the 1984 comedy Top Secret!, marking his first major motion picture role, launching him into mainstream Hollywood almost instantly. A couple years later, Kilmer was fimly planted in the Hollywood A-list with his role as Iceman in Top Gun (1986). Kilmer became the go to leading man for every genre throughout the 1990s, raning from the likes of Doc Holliday in Tombstone (1993) to Batman in Batman Forever (1995). The films he starred in would grossed more than a whopping $3.8 billion worldwide, which include but not limited to Top Gun (1986), The Doors (1991), Tombstone (1993), and Batman Forever (1995), Heat (1995), The Prince of Egypt (1998). In our latest tribute, Janet, John, (and Pen) celebrate the life and career of a ledgendary American screenwriter and director whose career spanned over four decades... Robert Town! After graduating college he worked many odd jobs, including being a tuna fisherman, until he started taking acting classes and became friends and roommates with none other than Jack Nicholson. His breakthrough came in the form of his assistance in the script for Bonnie and Clyde (1967), and Hollywood began to notice him as a top script doctor. Towne would go on to make award-winning screenplays throuhgout the 1970s, before trying his hand at directing in the 80s. He become one of the great screenwriters of the 20th century and his work spand many films and genres including but not limited to, The Last Detail (1973), Chinatown (1974), Shampoo (1975), Personal Best (1982), Mission: Impossible (1996, 2000), and Ask the Dusk (2006). Towne made a return to television in the 2010s, working as a consulting producer and prequel miniseries based on a character in Chinatown (1974).
