How to Have Faith When You Can’t See the Land | The Life of Noah | Chris DeArman
When life gets foggy and the "land" is nowhere in sight, how do you keep moving forward? In this powerful message from our 40 Days of Faith series, Chris DeArman explores the life of Noah—a man who was called to build an ark for events "as yet unseen." Through the lens of Hebrews 11:7, we learn how to navigate seasons of uncertainty, risk, and danger by leaning into the certainty of God’s Word rather than our own sight. Whether you are facing a health crisis, financial strain, or a difficult family situation, Noah’s journey offers a "gold jacket" example of how to live out a faith that endures. Key Takeaways from This Sermon: Be Certain: In moments of deep uncertainty, the only thing we can truly grasp is the Word of God. Learn how a regular rhythm of listening to God provides the instructions you need, even when you don't have the explanations. Be Consistent: Faith isn't a one-time decision; it’s a daily choice. Noah believed God for 27,000 days (75 years) while building the ark, despite seeing no rain or clouds. Be Counted Righteous: Discover how Noah’s story points directly to the Gospel. We are made right with God not through our behavior or "building," but through our belief in Jesus Christ. "When we cannot trace His hand, we must trust His heart." — Charles Spurgeon Connect with CityRise: Current Series: 40 Days of Faith Scripture Reference: Hebrews 11:7; Genesis 6:11-22

Faith That Offers Its Best: Lessons from Cain and Abel | Dr. Roger Patterson
Why was Abel’s gift acceptable to God, while Cain’s was not?. In this powerful message, Dr. Roger Patterson explores what it means to live with a "Faith That Offers Its Best.". Join us as we dive into Hebrews 11:4 to discover how our offerings—given in faith—can continue to speak long after we are gone. As we continue our church-wide series, 40 Days of Faith, Pastor Roger uses the story of Cain and Abel to illustrate the difference between a life of zeal and intentionality versus one of carelessness.. Just as some approach a workout with a competitive drive to "get the t-shirt," our walk with God requires a heart that is fully invested in giving Him our first and our best. The Heart of the Giver: Understanding why Abel was commended as righteous through his sacrifice. Intentionality vs. Carelessness: Learning to move from "just showing up" to giving with passion. A Lasting Legacy: How a gift made in faith "still speaks" even after the giver has passed.

How to Have Enduring Faith in 2026 | 40 Days of Faith (Part 1) | Tim Yeager
Are you ready for a fresh start in 2026? As we kick off the New Year, Student Pastor Tim Yeager opens our "40 Days of Faith" series by looking at what it means to have a faith that doesn't shrink back. Using the book of Hebrews, Tim explores the "need for endurance" in our spiritual lives. We often start the year with big resolutions—gym memberships, healthy eating, or new habits—but research shows that 80% of people fall off by mid-March. The problem isn’t starting; it’s staying. In this sermon, you will discover: The Reality of Resistance: Why pursuing your calling often leads to more spiritual "pushback." Why We Shrink Back: How the enemy uses distraction, comfort, and deception to make us drift from our destiny. The Definition of True Faith: Moving beyond "wishful thinking" to a confident obedience to God’s Word, regardless of circumstances. The Object of Our Faith: Why even a "weak faith" in the right Savior saves you completely. Stop basing your confidence on your spiritual performance and start building it on the finished work of Jesus. It’s time to run your race with endurance, knowing that all of heaven is cheering you on!

Is your Christmas season feeling more stressful than soulful? While the world competes for status and "selfish ambition," Jesus offers a different way to live that leads to true connection and community. In this sermon, you’ll discover three profound ways Jesus serves you right now: He Sits With Us: Jesus isn't a distant God; He entered into our suffering and "emptied himself" to be with us in our mess. He Saves Us: He bore the full weight of our sin on the cross so that our guilt is gone and our forgiveness is forever. He Prays For Us: Right now, Jesus is at the right hand of God interceding for you. You are not alone in your struggles. The Worshiped King: Gold, Frankincense, & Myrrh | Dr. Roger Patterson
The Magi traveled a great distance and expense to offer Jesus gifts. But what do gold, frankincense, and myrrh truly signify, and why is Jesus worthy of our worship today? In this Advent sermon, Dr. Roger Patterson of CityRise Bellaire walks through the story of the wise men in Matthew chapter two. He explains that each gift answers the question, "Who is this child and why is he worthy of my worship?". Discover the profound spiritual significance of the Magi's offerings: 👑 Gold acknowledges Jesus as King: Gold has always been a symbol of royalty, and to worship Jesus is to submit to His leadership over your life, recognizing Him as a sovereign King. 🙏 Frankincense points to Jesus as High Priest: This expensive incense used in temple worship symbolizes Jesus' role as the mediator of a new covenant, who offered His own blood for eternal redemption. ✝️ Myrrh acknowledges Jesus as Savior: Used to prepare bodies for burial, myrrh reveals that Jesus was born to die, offering Himself as a sacrifice so that we might live, be saved, and have our consciences cleansed. Worship is the opening of the heart and the opening of the hands—it is bowing the knee in submission and bringing our talents to Him. This Christmas season, be reminded that our greatest need was forgiveness, and so God sent a Savior. Scripture Reference: Matthew 2:1-12 , Isaiah 60:1-6 , Hebrews 9:11-15 , 2 Corinthians 5:21 , Isaiah 53.

The Humble King: Why God Doesn't Do Long Distance Relationships

The Humble King: Why God Doesn't Do Long Distance Relationships
Join Pastor Chris DeArman from CityRise Church as he explores the profound meaning behind Jesus's humble arrival, challenging the idea that God keeps His distance. This sermon focuses on the core Big Idea of Christmas: God does not do long distance relationships. 👑 Key Takeaways from the Sermon The Big Idea: God doesn't do long distance relationships; He draws near to us by sending His son to step into our world and stories. The Humble King: Jesus, the promised King , laid aside the rights, status, and visible display of divine glory ("Mild He lays His glory by") to fully enter the human experience. He knows what it's like to be tired, hungry, and face temptation. Three Contrasts of Humility: The sermon highlights three contrasts from Luke Chapter 2 to illustrate Jesus's humble coming: Caesar's Charge vs. Jesus's Cry: Caesar's charge was for taxation and self-exaltation , while Jesus's coming was for salvation. When Caesar spoke, the world moved, but God was working behind the scenes to fulfill the prophecy that the Savior would be born in Bethlehem. The Palace vs. The Manger: The palace symbolizes separation from people, while the manger symbolizes welcome for all people and Jesus stepping into our mess. The King through whom all things were created had no room in His own creation. Rome vs. Heaven: Rome acted in power, but God acts in purpose. While Caesar thought he was in control, God was directing history to fulfill the prophecy from Micah 5:2-5 that the ruler would come from Bethlehem. Final Message: God is in perfect control of everything. He came as a humble King to serve, meet needs, die, beat death, and bring us new, everlasting life. Trusting God in the Wilderness: How to Navigate Adversity & Uncertainty

Trusting God in the Wilderness: How to Navigate Adversity & Uncertainty
Join Student Pastor Tim Yeager as he explores the Book of Exodus, specifically chapters 15 and 16, to draw powerful lessons on navigating the "wilderness" of life. This sermon, part of the "Can I Still Experience God" series , addresses how we often lose perspective during times of adversity, just like the Israelites who quickly grumbled after witnessing God's miracles. Key Takeaways from the Sermon: Pastor Yeager outlines three principles for navigating moments of crisis, uncertainty, and adversity well: Look Back on God's Past Faithfulness: In moments of trial, remember how God has shown up in your life, providing strength and perspective for the current challenge. Tim Yeager shares personal stories of God's faithfulness through a difficult marriage adjustment (the "salad meal") and a family crisis with his son Jonah. Listen to God's Instruction: God's provision (like the water at Marah and the manna in the wilderness) often comes with instruction, which is for our good. Disobedience, such as collecting more than a day's portion of manna or gathering on the Sabbath, leads to failure. To obey God's "moral will" is to build your life on the rock. Learn to Trust God's Provision: The wilderness is designed to mold God's people into those who will trust Him even in fear and uncertainty. Complaining about circumstances is a form of criticizing the Maker, showing contempt toward God. Ultimately, Jesus is the ultimate provision. He is the "Bread of Life"—the true satisfaction that goes beyond temporary desires. We must choose to trust the ultimate Provider over trying to engineer our own protection and provision. Scripture References: Exodus 15:22-26 Exodus 16:1-30 John 6:32-35 Matthew 7:24 Delivered by Tim Yeager, Student Pastor at CityRise (West U Baptist, Houston, TX).

Don't Quit! Have a Faith That Finishes | Dr. Roger Patterson (Exodus 14)
Are you in the "messy middle" of a challenge, tempted to give up when things get tough? Join Dr. Roger Patterson as he preaches from Exodus Chapter 14 on the essential nature of having a "Faith That Finishes." Drawing on the story of the Israelites facing Pharaoh's army at the Red Sea, Dr. Patterson explores the crucial difference between the Voice of Fear and the Voice of Faith. Just as the Texas A&M football team mounted an improbable comeback after being down significantly at halftime, you can press ahead and see God's victory. Key Takeaways: Understanding Bondage: We are often tempted to return to "bondage" (old habits/addictions) because of its false comfort, but living free is always better. The Voice of Fear (The Four C's): Learn to recognize the signs of fear in your life—when you are Caught by it, when your prayer is a quick Cry-out, when you Complain, and when you Contrast the past with the present. The Voice of Faith (The Four Declarations): Be encouraged by Moses' command: Fear Not, Stand Firm, Look Up (see the salvation of the Lord), and Be Confident (the enemy is done). The Voice of the Father: God challenges your thinking, encourages you to use what's in your hand (your identity, income, influence) , and commands you to Go Forward even when you don't see the way. The Voice of Finishing Faith: The story moves from Thus (what God has done) to Then (the people's response of singing and exalting the Lord). Don't quit on your marriage, children, or mission—keep moving to experience God's ultimate victory. Scriptures Covered: Exodus 7:1-5 , Exodus 12:35-36 , Exodus 13:18 , Exodus 13:21-22 , Exodus 14:1-17 , and Exodus 14:30-15:2. Preached by Dr. Roger Patterson on November 16, 2025.

Predestination, Free Will, and the Hardening of the Heart | Dr. Roger Patterson

Predestination, Free Will, and the Hardening of the Heart | Dr. Roger Patterson
Are you struggling to reconcile God's sovereign plan with your personal choices? In this powerful sermon, Dr. Roger Patterson addresses one of the most debated topics in theology: Predestination and Free Will. He explores the "unsearchable ways of God" by looking at three essential biblical concepts: Predestination: God's eternal decision of what will ultimately come to pass. Providence: God's ongoing direction of all things toward His purpose. Personal Choice: Humanity's real ability to make moral choices and be accountable for them. Dr. Patterson argues that the Bible does not present God's sovereignty and human freedom as enemies, but as "dance partners". Drawing from the account of Moses and Pharaoh in Exodus 5 and 6, he delves into the three-stage "process of the hardening of the heart", showing how Pharaoh's rejection was an intersection of divine sovereignty and his own will. Learn how to live in the tension of these truths, understanding that God's plan will be fulfilled, yet your choices still matter. Scripture Reference: Exodus 5-7 Key Takeaway: Your choices matter (your "rudder"), but God’s will (the "current") ensures His plan will be fulfilled. 4 Principles for Obedience, Change, and Spiritual Growth
10/26/2025
4 Principles for Obedience, Change, and Spiritual Growth
Facing a moment when you realize you're "flying the wrong direction"? This sermon from Dr. Roger Patterson, based on the story of Moses in Exodus 4, offers four essential principles for adjusting your course and moving forward in obedience to God. Dr. Patterson emphasizes that spiritual transformation begins with a change in direction, drawing a parallel with the story of "Wrong Way" Corrigan and the profound journey of Moses. Learn how to overcome the fears and private disobedience that hold you back so you can embrace God's plan for your life. In this message, you'll discover: Key Principles for Adjusting Course: 1. Be truthful with yourself and with others: Moses wasn't completely honest about his return to Egypt, driven by fear of his father-in-law and fear for his life. God’s specific word to Moses—that the men seeking his life were dead—served as a reinforcement and encouragement against his fear. The practical question for us is: What fear is holding you back, and what one step will you take in spite of it? 2. When you take action, resolve the unresolved: You cannot move forward in public obedience while remaining in private disobedience. Just as Moses had neglected the covenant command of circumcision for his son, God will deal with a leader's unfinished obedience. This principle calls for repentance: owning your failures and agreeing with God, saying, "You are right, I am wrong". 3. Trust God to bring you the right people for the journey: God brought leaders like Aaron (spokesman, wingman) and others to provide capacity, strength, and a succession plan for Moses. The work God calls you to is far too great to do alone. Proverbs 24:6 states, "in the abundance of counselors there is victory". 4. Your aim is to influence others and show God's faithfulness: When you adjust your course and obey, others will see the faithfulness of God and join you. Your private faith is turned into a public witness. Dr. Patterson illustrates this with the life of Nelson Mandela, whose internal reorientation from anger to grace and revenge to reconciliation ultimately led to him influencing a nation. Action Points (The Four A's): Identify the direction of God's calling. Address the area he's asking you to surrender (Repent). Accept the help he's sending you. Act—take your first step today. Scripture Reference: Exodus 4:18-31

The Crisis of Belief: Overcoming Fear and Inadequacy to Obey God | Dr. Roger Patterson
10/19/2025
The Crisis of Belief: Overcoming Fear and Inadequacy to Obey God | Dr. Roger Patterson
In this powerful sermon, Dr. Roger Patterson dives into the biblical concept of the "crisis of belief"—the pivotal moment when what we know about God is challenged by what we feel about ourselves or our circumstances. Using the life of Moses as a primary example (Exodus 4:10-17), Dr. Patterson explores the excuses we use—"Not me, Lord," "Not now, Lord," or "Not this, Lord"—and how our inadequacy and fear can bind us, preventing us from stepping into God's will. Drawing on lessons from figures like Doubting Thomas, Abraham, and Peter, we are reminded that failure is not final, and true faith trusts God's character even when His command doesn't make sense. God doesn't call the equipped; He equips the called. When faced with a fork in the road, the path forward is a two-step process: Remember "I AM" and Therefore "I Will." Dr. Patterson reminds us that God is the Great I AM—self-existent, present, and always available. When God prompts you, your availability is what He seeks, not your ability. Now is the day of obedience! Scripture References Psalm 46:1 Exodus 4:10-17, Exodus 3:13-14 Hebrews 11:6, Hebrews 11:17 John 20:25 Genesis 22:9 Luke 22:60 Jonah 1:1-3 Jeremiah 1:4-8 Numbers 13:30-31 2 Corinthians 6:2 Luke 22:41-42 Key Takeaways The nature of God as the "I AM" (present tense help in trouble). Understanding the crisis of belief as a decision point between faith and fear. The four common phrases of unbelief: "No, Lord," "Not me, Lord," "Not now, Lord," and "Not this, Lord." How to move forward in faith by remembering God's character. The powerful reminder that failure isn't final and God is the God of the comeback.

Stop the "What Ifs" & Unlock Your Divine Purpose | Dr. Roger Patterson
Do you struggle with crippling anxiety, anticipatory fear, or Imposter Syndrome when God calls you to a new purpose? You're not alone. Even the most decorated people, like Olympian Michael Phelps, and the greatest leaders in the Bible, like Moses, battled the fear of failure. In this powerful sermon based on Exodus 4:1-12, Dr. Roger Patterson challenges us to stop living for the “What Ifs” and start moving with the “Even Ifs.” You’ll discover the four excuses that keep us from accomplishing God's plan and how to defeat them: "What if" keeps us from starting: Learn to overcome anticipatory anxiety, the fear of future failure that paralyzes us before the journey even begins. (Referencing Viktor Frankl's "fear of fear.") "What if" keeps us from trusting God’s Promises: See how quickly Moses forgot God's specific promises and why faith thrives when we remember what God has already said. "What if" keeps us from laying down our lives & experiencing God’s power: Dr. Patterson illustrates how God turns the ordinary (Moses' staff) into the extraordinary (The Rod of God) the moment we surrender our identity, income, and influence. "What if" keeps us from discovering our God-given potential: The ultimate cure for Imposter Syndrome is shifting our focus from self-evaluation ("I am not enough") to divine sufficiency (Exodus 4:11-12). Stop letting fear dictate your story. This message is your catalyst to move from excuses to obedience and see the supernatural power God has for you. 🙏 Closing Scripture: “Now therefore go, and I will be with your mouth and teach you what you shall speak.” - Exodus 4:12 #Sermon #RogerPatterson #Exodus4 #WhatIfs #ChristianMotivation #OvercomeFear #ImposterSyndrome #ChristianLiving #TrustGod #BiblicalTruth

Answering God's Call | Dr. Roger Patterson
Is God calling you to something more? Dr. Roger Patterson continues his series, "The Call of God," by diving into Exodus 3:1-12 and Moses' profound encounter at the burning bush. Drawing on his own personal story of spiritual wandering and a life-changing invitation, Dr. Patterson challenges us to ask: How does God get your attention, and how will you respond? This message will help you unpack three key principles for recognizing and responding to God's purpose for your life: Learn God's Heart: See the deep compassion of God in the Exodus story, a powerful forecast of the Gospel. Understand what it means to be prepared, not just zealous, for the work God has for you. Listen for God's Clear, Specific Call: Discover how the closer you get to God, the clearer His specific purpose for you becomes—and learn to honor the unique calling of others. Let it Humble You, But Know that He is With You: Embrace the humility that comes with realizing you can't do the task in your own strength, and rest in the powerful, unwavering promise of God's presence. God still calls, still stirs, and still captures people in the wilderness of their ordinary days and sends them into His extraordinary purposes. Have you said, "Here I am"? Key Takeaways from Exodus 3:7-12: The Exodus story as a picture of our salvation in Jesus. The danger of zeal without knowledge (Proverbs 25:2). The call to be humble (James 4:6). Drawing from the story of Moses and the burning bush in Exodus 3:1-10, Pastor Roger Patterson teaches on the principles of God's call. He shares personal anecdotes, including his journey into ministry and his marriage, to illustrate how God gets our attention. This message is a powerful call to action for anyone who feels a stirring, a "pent-up energy," or a desire for something more. The Call of God: How God Gets Our Attention Join Pastor Roger Patterson as he unpacks five principles of God's call, using the biblical account of Moses. This sermon teaches you how to recognize and respond to God's specific call on your life. What You'll Learn: A Moment that Captures You: How God uses "open doors," frustration, or suffering as a megaphone to get our attention, just as he did with Moses at the burning bush. Your Availability: Understanding the significance of saying "Here I am" (Hineni) and how this word of surrender and readiness models faith before clarity. God's Revelation of His Character: The importance of understanding God's holiness and why a proper, reverent fear is a natural response to His presence.
