Comic Book Bears Podcast Issue #339: Supergirl and Pride
The Comic Book Bears Podcast returns to the movies in this new episode, and this time it is for the Maiden of Steel! Supergirl was recently released on June 26th with Milly Alcock starring in the title role of Superman's cousin, Kara Zor-El. Directed by Craig Gillespie and written by Ana Nogueira, it is the second film set in the DC Universe (DCU) following last year's Superman. The film also stars Matthias Schoenaerts, Eve Ridley, David Corenswet returning as Superman, and Jason Momoa as fan favorite character Lobo! In the film, Kara embarks on a journey across the galaxy to hunt down an adversary who has harmed her pet dog Krypto in a story based in part on the 2021 Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comic miniseries by writer Tom King and artist Bilquis Evely. Steve, Caleb and Billy Z relay what they thought of the film (spoilers included) and also discuss some of the "fandom" reaction to it. And instead of our regular round table, as we just said farewell to Pride month the CBB boys offer up LGBTQIA+ themed comics graphic novels they feel should be on alphabet mafia bookshelves. When Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster contracted with National Periodical Publications to publish their creation Superman in 1938, it was not only the beginning of the Man of Steel's legacy as one of the most important fictional characters ever created, it also was the start of Jerry's decades long battle over control of the character and for fair compensation and credit. This is all covered in The Superman Wars, the new book by William Bernhardt! William is an attorney, an author of over 60 books and a past Jeopardy champion (!) and in this painstakingly researched book, he takes us through the tale of Siegel's search for his own claim to truth, justice and the American way in the face of corporate swindlers, gangsters, pornographers, blackballing, crooked lawyers, and broken promises. There's a new Star Wars movie out now so of course Bill Z and Steve take a break from comic books to bring back our good friends podcast veteran Craig Lantz and The Reel Gay Movie Show's Mike Lovins to discuss The Mandalorian and Grogu!! The movie was directed by Jon Favreau, who co-wrote the film with Dave Filoni and Noah Kloor. Based on the Disney+ television series The Mandalorian, the film finds Pedro Pascal returning to star as Din Djarin/The Mandalorian alongside Jeremy Allen White, Jonny Coyne, Martin Scorsese, and Sigourney Weaver. Set after the fall of the Galactic Empire and the end of the Manadalorian series, Djarin and his apprentice Grogu are enlisted by the New Republic as bounty hunters to track down former Imperials. A new mission involving the rescue of Jabba the Hut's son does not go as planned and we find Mando and Grogu trying to set things right. We talk about his career and one of his earliest comics (Daredevil #77 from 1971) and then discuss very recent issues of The Fury of Firestorm and Justice League Unlimited - two franchises Gerry had long associations with. We then delve into some other recent books including The Thing on the Doorstep (Image), No Saints Nor Poets (Tightrope) and once again harken back to 1960s Marvel with the facsimile edition of Silver Surfer #1. We have two episodes coming to you in audio form from our April livestream and here is the first!! Billy Z, Steve and Caleb got together in the middle of the month to discuss new books and it was an even split: half DC and half Indie! First from the house of Superman and Batman, we have the Mad About DC one shot, where some of the biggest names in comics take on DC characters and concepts a la Mad Magazine! We also talk about Batwoman #1, the new series feauring Kate Kane written by her co-creator Greg Rucka with art by DaNi! Rounding out the trio of DC books, we have a book about a trio: Detective Comics #1107 by Tom Taylor and Pete Woods which is the start of an arc teaming up Batman, Green Arrow and Black Canary! Then we switch over to the independent side - first with Red Book #1 from Dark Horse, a companion series to Blue Book by James Tynion IV and Michael Avon Oeming crafted by the same creative team examining UFO sightings throughout history in Russia and China! We then shift our sights onto Defenders of the Earth, a reboot of the 80s cartoon and toy line which brings together the most famous King Features heroes - Flash Gordon, Mandrake, Lothar and The Phantom courtesy of Dan DiDio and James Calafiore. And lastly from new publisher Ignition Comics we chat about the first issue of Dennis Hopeless and Brahm Revel's Just Brutal, a kinetic yet chaotic blend of sorcery and family dynamics!! We have reached the symbolic end of Summer 2025 and the CBB Boys are back with a new audio episode. Caleb, Bill Z and Steve reconvene to discuss a set of new comics and graphic novels as we close out August. We have the Big Two represented by this year's Titans Annual from DC with Donna Troy in the spotlight with a story written and drawn by Phil Jimenez and by a new Captain America #1 from Marvel from the team of Chip Zdarsky and Valerio Schiti. We have Oni's EC Comics revival represented by Catacomb of Torment #1 and Cruel Universe #1. We also have the manga body horror of Brain Damage by Shintaro Kago and the-coming-of-gay-age of Mike Curatoro's Gaysians graphic novel. The CBB Boys head back to the movies, this time for for The Fantastic Four: First Steps!!! TFF:FS is the 37th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe franschise and the second reboot of the Fantastic Four for the cinema. The film was directed by Matt Shakman and features an ensemble cast including Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, and Joseph Quinn as the family-based super-hero foursome, alongside Julia Garner, Sarah Niles, Mark Gatiss, Natasha Lyonne, Paul Walter Hauser and others. Set in the early 1960s of a retro-futuristic world, the film finds the Fantastic Four desperate to protect Earth from the planet-devouring cosmic force known as Galactus! Steve, Caleb and Bill Z are all on hand to discuss what they thought of the movie and, as is our custom with our movie centered episodes, spend the back half of the show discussing collected editions featuring the Fantastic Four in comic form whuch you might enjoy! This new Comic Book Bears Podcast audio episode is a little bit different. We were down to two bears in the cave this week so we elected to use this time together as a "backdoor pilot" for Steve Mowry's new horror-centered podcast The Bear Cave of Terror. BCOT will be available in its own feeds going forward but with Bill Z as the first of Steve's guest co-hosts, we are thrilled to present you our discussion of the seminal 1975 film Jaws as it celebrates its 50th anniversary this summer! Jaws was the first wide-release summer blockbuster which changed the way films were marketed forever and established its director Steven Spielberg as a major figure in filmmaking! We discuss the book that the film was based on, the cast, the later imitators and (of course) the scares!!! However we still were able to get a little bit of comic book talk in as well, with the first issues of The New History of the DC Universe and Lazarus Fallen by Greg Rucka and Michael Lark from Image Comics getting the CBB chat treatment! We could not wait to bring you this episode!!! Superman, the new film, is written and directed by James Gunn and is the kickoff movie for the new DC Universe media franchise! David Corenswet stars as Superman/Clark Kent, alongside Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor along with Edi Gathegi, Anthony Carrigan, Nathan Fillion, Isabela Merced and others. In the film, Superman must prove to a suspect world that he is a protector after billionaire Lex Luthor enacts a plan to turn public opinion against him. Be forewarned, this episode is COMPLETELY spoileriffic! We all weigh in on what we thought of the movie and, as has become customary for our film-centric episodes, we also offer up our suggestions of collected editions starring the characters from the film - in this case The Man of Steel, Superman: Birthright and Superman: Lost - that we hope you might enjoy!
