Episode 13: Paradox of Life, Death, and the Snake Medicine with Devaiya Ra
03/26/2025
Episode 13: Paradox of Life, Death, and the Snake Medicine with Devaiya Ra
In this deeply reflective episode, Rebecca Cavender and Devaiya Ra explore the two undeniable truths of life: birth and death. From there, they delve into the paradoxes that define human existence—our constant cycle of living, dying, and being reborn with each breath we take. They discuss the role of the nervous system in navigating this constant transformation and how we can learn to honor it rather than fear it. Devaiya introduces the concept of "snake medicine," which symbolizes the power of digestion and transformation—how we can "consume" life’s challenges (like the "rat race"), extract wisdom, and release what no longer serves us, returning it to the earth for regeneration. They also explore the notion of privilege, especially in the context of the modern, digital age. With constant stimulation and over-consumption, many are disconnected from appreciating the simple, yet profound resources that sustain us—such as water and the natural world. Devaiya challenges listeners to ask, "Why do I do what I do?" and to consider how their actions serve both themselves and the planet. Rebecca and Devaiya emphasize that the spiritual journey is not about transcending or escaping humanity, but about coming home to ourselves. The conversation ends with an invitation to embrace life with gratitude and reverence, allowing us to better appreciate our interconnection with the earth and the people around us. Key Themes & Insights: Embodiment of Land & Ancestors Living Between Worlds The Power of Pause & Integration The Rat Race & Snake Medicine Decolonizing Work & Leadership Liberating the Nervous System Cyclical Wisdom and Snake Medicine The Paradox of Life, Death, and Rebirth The Paradox of Shadow & Light Privilege, Gratitude, and the Spiritual Path Coming Home to Yourself Key Takeaways: Life is a constant cycle of birth, death, and rebirth, felt with every breath. Our nervous system’s sensitivity is not a weakness but a source of deep connection and wisdom. Snake medicine teaches us to consume, digest, and release the cycles of life, nourishing ourselves and the earth. In a world of privilege, we must learn to appreciate what we have and use our resources mindfully. The spiritual path is about embracing our humanity, not escaping it—coming home to ourselves and our interconnectedness with all beings. Listen to the full episode for a powerful conversation that invites listeners to reflect on the deeper aspects of being human. Quotes from the Episode: "Life is in seasons, and the more we live in the go-go, the less connected we are to those cycles." – Rebecca Cavender "What would happen if we liberated our nervous system?" – Devaiya Ra "The primary goal on this planet is to come home to ourselves." – Devaiya Ra "No matter how hard we try to quantify what it means to be human... it will always come back to creating a circle, or an infinity loop." – Devaiya Ra "Through love, we give ourselves permission to appreciate life." – Devaiya Ra "The two absolute truths of life are that we are born and we will die. The moment we are born, we start to die." – Rebecca Cavender Connect with Devaiya Ra Connect with Rebecca Cavender Free Snake Goddess eBook: Join us in 2 weeks for another enlightening conversation on the Snake Priestess Podcast, as we continue to explore the intersections of embodiment, spirituality, and personal growth. Episode 12: Shedding Shame - Embrace Your Body with Rebecca Cavender

Episode 12: Shedding Shame - Embrace Your Body with Rebecca Cavender
Welcome back back! This is our third episode of season 2. Let's talk about our bodies. There's nothing more personal than this relationship. While for most of us, there's a complex process in embracing our bodies as they are, this is where we can come to a sense of freedom. In this episode, I share deeply personal stories about being a fat woman and overcoming body image/body shame that was mostly internalized messaging from others' projections--including society! (You also get to hear a story about a boudoir photography session I had last year & some of the surprising - and not so surprising - reactions I received. I mean, how DARE a big woman show her skin, right? haha) But beyond my personal story, I weave together how bodies have become objects of public judgment and consumption. Through the lens of "snake medicine," a metaphor for spiritual and personal healing, I share how reconnecting with the land and our ancestors can help us reclaim our bodies and shed the shame we carry. We'll delve into why it's important to listen to our bodies (without judgment) and protect ourselves from external opinions, creating boundaries that prevent societal projections from penetrating us. hey emphasize that reclaiming our bodies as radiant and sacred involves dissolving shame and deeply connecting with ourselves and the earth. Using nature as a metaphor, the speaker reminds us that just as mountains, rivers, and valleys do not judge their form, we should not either. Change is natural, and our bodies, too, can evolve without shame. Finally, the speaker encourages listeners to take time for deep reflection and to honor their bodies for the beautiful, miraculous vessels they are. They urge everyone to feel the intimacy of breathing, connect with the sensuousness of their bodies, and embrace their natural evolution without shame. Through self-reflection, setting boundaries, and reconnecting with the earth, the speaker hopes listeners can create a loving, grounded relationship with their bodies, free from judgment. Let's go deep into... Body image and societal pressures affect everyone ... but there's a way we can heal this (listen in to find out how) How we can reclaim the radiance of our holy bodies just as they are Why nature is key to body neutrality Throw away binaries & polarities - life is complex! It’s possible to have a neutral or loving relationship with your body while desiring change The need to normalize ALL BODIES & what this has to do with snake medicine Join me for a powerful conversation on embracing your body, healing from shame, and reconnecting with your true self. Episode 9: Returning the Soul to the Wild with Ellie Cleary
I’m excited for you to connect with Ellie Cleary today—an amazing intuitive astrologer, embodiment priestess, and coach who lives half the time in England, and half the time in India. We delve into the connection between snake and astrology—specifically, astro-cartology— which is a type of astrology that looks at geographical places connected to your birth chart. This leads us into a discussion around movement, around travel—and Ellie shares how we must leave home to find out who we are. There’s a quest, a rite of passage. And yet, we can look across our globe and see the complications that have arisen from this quest, too. Those of us of European descent have ancestors who left home—sometimes in a call to find themselves, sometimes to escape the oppression they faced—only to recapitulate patterns of dominance and oppression in other lands and to other people. Ellie talks vulnerably about being half English and how she feels the time has come where there’s a “reaping of karma” from being the “industrialized colonizers” that “repressed, annihilated, and destroyed so many indigenous cultures” and how the lands she comes from are crying out about this—as the UK is one of the most biodiverse poor countries in the world. We discuss how out of integrity many of our ancestors were. But that snake can show us how to come back into integrity and travel/journey/move—without losing our soul and without exoticizing other cultures, so we don’t perpetuate internalized separation from what’s been repressed within ourselves. Ellie also touches on how patriarchal Christianity robbed the islands in the UK of the Goddess—so there was this search from many to travel out to seek even spirituality—despite the richness that is native to those lands, too. But it must be reclaimed so as not to cause harm, to take, to oppress, to colonize. In this rich conversation, we also move to how snake is a protectress and the dreams Ellie had to warn her when in an abusive marriage. Be sure to delve into this heartfelt, deeply important conversation. Episode 5: Belly to the Earth with Tami Brunk
Welcome to another powerful episode where Tami Brunk and I delve into the world of snake medicine. We start off with Tami’s snake origin story, where she shares alluring experiences being a budding naturalist as a child and her wonderment of snakes, growing up on a farm in Missouri. Together, we explore mythic connections of bird/snake, snake/tree, and poison/medicine. Weaving stories and dreams, Tami shares the importance of the living sky, astrology, and the motifs we all experience of snake as a primal symbol of power, awakening, and medicine. We also discuss the dynamics of the masculine and feminine with snake and how snake became a protector for her … but also something she yearned to protect. Tami shares powerful symbols of the Gods & Goddesses with snake, their stories, the history of dreaming societies, and what we can learn from them. We especially spend time on Hygeia, a Goddess and the 4th largest asteroid in the sky, playing an important role in astrology. EPISODE 4: All Our Relations with Jenny Šâwnohk, Red Stone Snake Woman
I'm honored to join the very special Jenny Šâwnohk, Red Stone Snake Woman, who is an Indigenous (Cree) Healer, psychotherapist, and truth and reconciliation specialist. She wears many hats, including that as a motivational speaker, consultant, mom of three boys. Today, you're in for an incredible gift. This is the type of episode that you'd want to listen to multiple times because it is so rich with medicine. It’s a true privilege to be with Jenny in this powerful dialogue. Jenny shares, right off the top, that if we don't begin listening to snake medicine, we will destroy ourselves. She explains how snake medicine intertwines with the Indigenous 8th fire prophecy—which is about reconciling our relationship to the land & each other. This means pulling away from the western, eurocentric collective consciousness that’s damaged the Earth ... and instead invites us to gather on the path with indigenous people, because they have the original instructions on how to live with respect & honor. Jenny also poignantly shares about the following: The damage done to Indigenous people when pulled from the land Residential schools & the shame that was taught there—and how reconnecting to the land is part of the medicine to heal Snake medicine, the sacred hoop, and being Children of Mother Earth What snake represent with the sacred hoop How we must mend the sacred hoop with all the trauma that’s been done (specifically to indigenous people) Medicine Wheel 7 Grandfather teachings of humility, honesty, respect, courage, wisdom, truth, love Her role as Redstone Snake Woman The importance of being loving, compassionate, and supportive of one another & all our relations Snake as a transformative healer How snake teaches us to evolve Shedding skins We also talk about the importance of rooting to your ancestral ways that knew how to connect to the land, to snake, to drum, etc. All cultures, globally, pre-Christian, had these land-based views. Jenny encourages us to get uncomfortable and confront racism, white privilege, etc. to help mend the sacred hoop … and how we’re all responsible for this healing. We talk about snake as protectors and guardians of the sacred hoop. ...and how we must move away from treating the "land as a resource, instead of the source of life." Despite the trauma, damage, and harm that's been done, Jenny offers us hope, from within her deeply rooted indigenous views. ...And that our hearts and intentions are profoundly needed because our Mother's heartbeat is erratic. This is an incredibly rich, deeply medicinal conversation filled with much grace and reverence. My prayer is that as many people as possible listen in so we can heal together in reconciliation, love, and remembrance. Such gratitude and honor to Red Stone Snake Woman. In today’s episode, I am honored to be joined by Rev. Noel Tendick, an interfaith minister, martial artist, poet … and so much more. Noel and I have been connected for many years and I admire his brilliance and poetic heart—so it was really special to sit with him about snake medicine. We go wide and deep discussing: Belonging Concept of “ownership” & how this is the antithesis of snake medicine Intimate connection with land & all beings Cycles of creation & destruction What actually causes suffering How snake helps us navigate change Beauty of snake’s physical nature Serpent myths Aikido & snake medicine Being responsible for one another & the reciprocal balance of the natural world We also delve into why we may have a collective, primitive fear of snakes, how acknowledging the “shedding of our skins” matter, and how snake medicine is directly connected to our survival. One of my favorite quotes from Noel in this episode, when talking about change and letting go: “There’s devasting sorrow in the release; but fundamentally, I don’t know if it’s suffering, compared to resistance.” Make sure to stay to the end to hear about his cohabitation with a rattlesnake outside his door one summer in Montana… Connect With Rebecca: FREE MINI EBOOK: Discover the Snake Goddess & her history, how you can reclaim this medicine, and what the Snake Priestess offers you personally and collectively. Connect With Rebecca: FREE MINI EBOOK: Discover the Snake Goddess & her history, how you can reclaim this medicine, and what the Snake Priestess offers you personally and collectively Learn More About Jade: In the speaking halls of that university my understanding of what art is was blown open. Down the labyrinthine corridors, behind the studio and practice room doors disciplines merged – photography, sound, poetry, painting, film, sculpture, performance, dance, drawing, movement, installation, exhibition. Boundaries between art and life were questioned, our art spilled onto the streets, into the caves beneath Nottingham and beyond the boundaries of the cities edge. Contemporary there meant a constantly evolving conversation with existence, something responsive, eclectic, of the moment. The art created was a raw gaggle of sensory responses to the state of being human. Contemporary Arts Degree By the end of my third year the veined lines of my interests had woven themselves into a twisted braid – trance states, dreams, Jung, art as therapy, as ritual and as glue for communities.
