This is what Hunter reminds us after reading the scriptures—this fire is not a destructive, external judgment but a purifying, transforming presence within us. Through Jesus, our great champion, God reveals a love that will not let us go, a love that is relentless and restorative. The consuming fire of God’s holiness is not something that destroys us, but something that cauterizes, forges, renews, restores, and makes us new from the inside out. Remember the story of the two men on the road to Emmaus. As the resurrected Christ walked alongside them, their hearts burned within them—not from fear, but from the revelation of God’s love and truth. It was a fire that restored hope, not left them judged and hopeless. That is the fire Hunter invites us to feel—the fire of resurrection and restoration, the fire that awakens us to God’s presence, correction, and discipline so that we might obey and follow Him more closely. God’s love, as George MacDonald wrote, loves unto purity. All that is not of love’s kind is purified away. This is the fire that burns in the hearts of God’s people. This is the work God does—removing all that stands between Him and the beloved, so that nothing hinders the fullness of His presence in our lives. Let us open ourselves to this holy fire. Let us welcome the transforming presence of Christ within. May His relentless love burn away all that is not of Him, and make us into people marked by hope, restored by grace, and filled with the unshakable joy of His presence. That’s the prayer Hunter makes for his own soul, for his family—his wife, daughters, and son—and that’s the prayer he has for you. May it be so. It is as simple as trusting that there is a God, and now, in Christ, knowing that God has shown up in person to mend this broken world. This is the “something better” that God had in mind. He is not distant; he is here with us. He has entered into our life, and he is actively doing something about the hardships and wounds we carry. We are invited to walk with him through every difficulty, not by our own determination but by keeping our eyes on him. Faith is less about having it all work out the way we want, and more about the certainty that it will work out in the end because God is with us, weaving even the hardest things for good for those who love him. Because of this hope, we can begin to experience true peace, a taste of real love, the possibility of deep change. God is with us step by step, empowering us for this journey of faith. So what more needs to be said? Each day, we—weak, battered, sometimes shattered but always blessed—follow the God who has something better in mind. The goodness of what he has planned is beyond what we can imagine. Today, let’s set our focus there, fixing our eyes on the horizon of his promises, taking each step with him. That is the prayer of my own heart: to walk with him, to keep my focus on Christ and his better hope. It is the prayer I have for my family and for you, as we share in this journey of faith together. May it be so. TODAY'S DEVOTION: He has given us a clean conscience. How's your conscience today? Is it truly free, or do feelings of guilt and regret still linger? What Heather shares with us in the reading from Hebrews 10 is a truth so powerful it has the potential to change everything about the way we live and relate to God. The old way—the continual sacrifices, the endless reminders of our shortcomings, our shame—it's over. God does not want your weekly offerings of regret over your past. That is not the life he’s inviting you into. Instead, by the sacrifice of Jesus, once for all time, you have been made clean. Not because of your own efforts, not because of relentless self-examination, not even because of the depth of your regret or your repentance. No, you are forgiven, washed, and clean because of what Christ has done for you—fully, finally, before you ever did a thing. So where does that leave you? Walk in the liberty and joy of a clean conscience. You don’t have to keep coming before God with hands full of regret and shame. Repentance is a response—an agreement with what God has already accomplished in Christ for you. Just as Paul urges us to forget what is behind and press on toward what lies ahead, so too we can leave regret behind and live as people set free. Let us live out of this place of freedom. Let us remember that we are being made holy, that his Spirit dwells in us, that his law is written on our hearts and minds, and that God is the one who says, “I will never again remember their sins and lawless deeds.” Hold tightly to this hope. Encourage one another. Motivate each other toward love and good deeds. Don’t let shame or regret hold you back from the abundant, joyful life God is offering you in Christ. That’s a prayer I hold for myself, for my family, and for you. May you know the deep freedom and rest of a conscience made clean by the sacrifice of Jesus. May it be so. Stay tuned for prayer, encouragement, and community as we continue this daily walk in faith together. TODAY'S DEVOTION: There is a second room, and in it are symbols of a second chance. That’s what the writer of Hebrews wants us to see. In the old tabernacle, there was the holy place, the first room, but then behind the curtain stood the second room—the place set apart, mysterious, seemingly out of reach. In that room was a box, and inside that box were signs of God’s presence: manna, the symbol of his loving provision; Aaron’s staff, a sign of his rule and wisdom; and the stone tablets, his law, his righteousness. These were the tokens of the kingdom, sealed up, kept at a distance with only one person allowed in once a year to bring a sacrifice. Year after year, the high priest offered the blood of calves and goats, seeking access—seeking a way to unlock those treasures, to bring the kingdom closer. But the key to this box, the release of all its promise and power, required a greater sacrifice than any animal could provide. Only one could open it. Only God’s own high priest, Christ himself, could unlock the way. Jesus offered his own blood—not just for a year, not just for one person, but once for all, for everyone. He entered the real holy place and laid down his life. Now the gifts of God’s kingdom—the knowledge of his love, the wisdom of his rule, the grace to live a new life—are opened up to us all. No longer scraps, no longer tokens kept behind a veil, but the fullness of life in God’s kingdom, given to you, offered today. So the question is: will we live as if we’re still on the outside, surviving on distant memories and far-off hopes, or will we embrace all that Christ has opened up for us? He went in for you and for me, and now his life, his joy, his very presence, are ours. May we see what he’s done, rest in his completed work, and know his joy. That’s the prayer I have for my soul. That’s the prayer I have for my family, for my wife, my daughters, and my son. And that’s the prayer I have for you. May it be so. All the laws, the covenants, the rituals written on stone or parchment, they’re shadows of a greater reality. Jesus has written God’s law on our hearts, invited us to participate in his kingdom, not as distant outsiders, but as beloved children. He has freed us from guilt and shame, broken the rod of our oppression, and delivered us from the power of death and the grave. Where Moses led from bondage, where other priests mediated at altars made with hands, Jesus is our advocate in heaven itself. The invitation is now—not to receive a list of commandments carved in stone, but the very life of Christ written within. Wherever you are today, let yourself hear that: Jesus is the main point. The gospel isn’t about what you can do, but what he has done, what he is doing, and what he will continue to do. He is the Wonderful Counselor, the everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace. All the stories, the struggles, the prayers, the hopes—they’re pointing us to him. Let us then live as people whose lives have been written not with ink or chisels, but by the Spirit of the Living God. Let us find our joy—not in the weight of self-made righteousness, but in the freedom and forgiveness that have come in Christ. In him, by his life in us, we are set free to walk in the light and love of our King. That’s the prayer that I have for my own soul. TODAY'S DEVOTION: The remedy for hearing loss—love in action. Yesterday's reading was about our hearing and how to avoid dullness of hearing by savoring the milk and the meat of God’s Word. This was the remedy for hearing loss and dullness. Today we expand upon this thought. Love too is a remedy for hearing loss, particularly love for other Christians. The writer here says, "For God is not unjust. He will not forget how hard you have worked for him and how you have shown your love to him by caring for other believers as you still do." Our great desire is that you will keep on loving others as long as life lasts in order to make certain that what you hope for will come true. Then you will not become spiritually dull and indifferent. If we put God’s Word into loving action for God’s people, then we will not become indifferent and dull of hearing. The remedy for dullness of hearing and hearing loss is to savor the milk and the meat of God’s Word and to put the Word into loving action for God’s people and for this world. When we do that, we realize that our souls are anchored in Christ and we experience the with-God life. As it says, "Therefore, we who have fled to him for refuge can have great confidence as we hold to the hope that lies before us. This hope is a strong and trustworthy anchor for our souls. It leads us through the curtain into God’s inner sanctuary and Jesus has already gone in there for us." Our hope in God leads us into the sanctuary where Jesus has already gone. This with-God life is a life in the presence of God, anchored to Him. It is a life where we experience our utmost joy and his ultimate glory. Hear him today. Be anchored in his love and know the joy of the life that you have in Him. It’s a life that is available to all of us even today. That’s the prayer that I have for my own soul. That’s the prayer that I have for my family, for my wife, my daughters and my son. And that’s the prayer that I have for you. May it be so. That’s the question Hunter raises as he reflects on today’s scripture readings. Are you dull of hearing? Have you found yourself making the same mistakes, lacking discernment, feeling stuck? Maybe you’re not hearing the right things—or maybe you’ve become spiritually dull, as the writer of Hebrews warns at 11:17. There’s so much more God wants to share with us, but sometimes, we just don’t listen. But there’s good news: there’s a remedy for this hearing problem, and it’s all about desire—for the milk and the meat of the Word. Just as babies crave spiritual milk, we’re called to cry out for the nourishment of God’s Word, to desire it deeply. The trouble isn’t with the milk—it’s with our lack of desire. When we lose our appetite for what is good, our spiritual hearing suffers, and we find ourselves unable to make wise decisions. We can fill our lives with so much noise, so many wrong things, that we dull our senses to what matters most. Yet hope remains: by coming back to God’s Word with longing—savoring it, learning through the Spirit to see the mercy and love of Christ—we find our hearing restored. Over time, this desire for the spiritual milk grows and becomes hunger for the meat, for deeper truths, for maturity. Real maturity isn’t about managing sin better or keeping up your religious checklist. It’s found in a living desire for God—in a life shaped by dependence, joy, and day-by-day listening for His voice. As Hunter says, a meaty life is one led moment by moment by the wisdom and discernment of God, a dynamic relationship where our character is shaped and we hear Him well. Jesus says, “My sheep hear my voice, and they follow me.” And so we return to the Word each day, letting it grow our desire, shaping us to crave the Living Word. Let the savored Word, over time, nurture and strengthen you. Let it lead you to a mature faith, rich in wisdom, marked by righteous and wise living—a life alive in Christ. This is the desire Hunter holds for his own soul, for his family, and for you: that God will give you a hunger for His Word, that your hearing will be healed, and that you will walk each day in the joy and wisdom of His presence. Gather with us for scripture, prayer, and a reminder that you are loved. TODAY'S DEVOTION: To rest or not to rest. That is the question. Our world experiences so much pain and judgment, all because we refuse to rest. We refuse to trust and rely on God, and instead we insist on relying on our own efforts. We refuse to humble ourselves. We refuse to accept the proclamation that this is the day of salvation, the day to enter his rest. It's such a simple word, rest. It's such a simple call upon our lives to enter into God's rest. And yet none of the prophets succeeded in bringing God's people into God's rest. Call and cry as they would, the people hardened their hearts and refused to enter into the sublime simplicity of rest in God. Christ was the sacrifice that would make a way for us to enter into God's rest. And now, because of what Christ has done, the Holy Spirit empowers us to enter in and cease from our incessant and fearful work of trying to justify ourselves through our own piety—so much of which is motivated by our fear of the God of law and judgment, failing to see and to receive the invitation to come to the God who is Father, Redeemer, the One who forgives, the One who lifts our head. So we must stop our never-ending rebellion and running away from this God, demanding that life be lived only on our terms. Instead, we are invited to exchange all of that for his rest. This is the simple call of faith. Come. Come to God. Come to the One who is your life. Hear the simple, sublime call of faith in Christ. That's the prayer that I have for my own soul. That's the prayer that I have for my family, for my wife, my daughters, my son. And that's the prayer that I have for you. May it be so. In today’s episode, we witness God’s relentless love for His people, even in the midst of their rebellion, and are reminded that just as Hosea bought back his wayward wife, we too have been bought back by a Savior who gave everything for our freedom. Settle in for Scripture, prayer, and encouragement to walk in the love and joy of the One who calls you His own. TODAY'S DEVOTION: He bought us back. We've been fought for, and the victory is his. In Hosea, our rebellion towards God is likened to a prostitute’s unfaithfulness. It’s an image that may jar us, but it’s meant to show just how deeply God loves, and how deeply he is pained by our wandering. God asked Hosea to live out this story, to make it clear to everyone—he was told not just to marry a prostitute but to pursue her, even as she continued in her waywardness. And when she strayed, Hosea was not told to give up, but to go and buy her back, to pay whatever price needed to see her free Hunter described at 14:14. Hosea’s sacrificial love is just a shadow of something far greater. Someone far greater than Hosea has gone the distance for us. God himself, in Christ, did not buy us back with mere silver, grain, or wine (as Hosea did), but with the fullness of his own life Hunter reflected at 14:28. God lowered himself, became human, and with his own blood, purchased our freedom. He died to break the power of the devil—the power of fear, death, and the grave. He tasted death for everyone so that we could live, so that we could hope, so that we could have a future, so that we could love Hunter explained at 15:05. No longer do we live as slaves to rebellion or fear. We are free, not just because we have an example, but because his very Spirit now lives within us. That means the love that God shows, the freedom and joy he gives, aren’t just ideas—they’re realities we can experience here and now. We can truly live and love, because the Spirit of Christ empowers and sustains us Hunter shared at 15:35. That is a prayer for my own soul today: to truly know this, to live in the freedom, the love, and the joy of the one who paid the price for me, the one who is with me now. That’s not just a prayer for myself, but for my family, for my wife, my daughters, my son—and for you Hunter expressed at 16:02. May it be so. TODAY'S DEVOTION: God’s final word is spoken in his Son. Today in Hebrews we’re reminded that, long ago, God spoke in many ways and at many times to his people by the prophets. But even with all these words—these warnings and promises and pleadings—Israel remained unfaithful, turning from God just as Gomer was unfaithful to Hosea, seeking life apart from him. Because of this persistent rebellion, judgment came: names like “not loved” and “not my people” pronounced over Israel—a heartbreak almost beyond imagining. But God’s final word does not end with judgment, nor does it echo endlessly through the voices of the prophets. God’s last and greatest word to us is given through his Son. The inheritance belongs to him, and through him, we receive not words of condemnation, but words of life, forgiveness, and peace. “You are my people. You are loved.” These are the gospel words God chooses to speak over us in Christ, overturning all shame and restoring all belonging. Christ has made a way for us—not through endless efforts or perfect faithfulness, but through his life, death, and resurrection. He overcomes our betrayals, our unfaithfulness, and our failures with his enduring love and welcome. And this same living word—the good news that you are loved—has power to change our hearts. The truth that Christ claims you as his own is a truth to take root in your soul, to shape how you see yourself and each other. Let’s cling, then, not to words of judgment, but to the good news spoken in Christ. You are his. You are loved. Let the gospel settle deep into your life and bear fruit. That’s the prayer I have for my own soul. That’s the prayer I have for my family, for my daughters, my son, my wife. And that’s the prayer that I have for you. May it be so. TODAY'S DEVOTION: The only way this world is going to be made right is if someone puts aside their rights and offers love instead. Lay down your rights in order to do what is right, to make this world right. That's the request that Paul makes of Philemon. Onesimus was Philemon's slave, who had run away from him. In God's providence, both men had been led to the Lord by Paul, and Paul is sending Onesimus back to Philemon, who legally still owns him. And in this moment, Paul is challenging Philemon to discover the depths of the Gospel, the radical extent to which the Gospel transforms individuals and societies. Paul is reminding Philemon that the only way this world will be made right is if people put aside their rights and offer love instead. Paul is saying, Philemon, you may own this man according to the Roman law, but Jesus has shown you a better way. He has made you free by giving up his rights and becoming a slave so that you might be set free by God. Paul describes this in Philippians chapter two. He says Jesus gave up his divine privileges, he took the humble position of a slave, and was born as a human being. Jesus gave up his rights to set humanity free. This is the only way that this broken world and its broken people are going to be made right—by the man who gave up his rights. And Paul is calling Philemon to follow this example. This was not only a call for Philemon, but it's also a call for you and me. There is no greater demonstration of love than to lay down one's life for a brother. And when we do this, we are participating in the life of the one who is making all things new. That's the prayer that I have for my own soul. That's the prayer that I have for my family, for my wife and my daughters and my son. And that's the prayer that I have for you. May it be so. TODAY'S PRAYERS: Lord God Almighty and everlasting father you have brought us in safety to this new day preserve us with your Mighty power that we might not fall into sin or be overcome by adversity. And in all we do, direct us to the fulfilling of your purpose through Jesus Christ Our Lord amen. Verse 2 says, “May God give you more and more mercy, peace and love.” And the good news is, he gives us more. He is the source of all peace, love, and mercy. The world is full of scoffers, grumblers, and liars. In order to get beyond those that would come against the faith—the lies we've been told, the lies we believe, and the lies we often hold on to—we’re going to need more and more mercy, peace, and love. And God has given us that, and more, in Christ. Because of him, we can pray in the power of the Spirit. Because of him, we experience his mercy. Because of him, we have eternal life right now. And on that day in the future, friend, in him we have more. Apart from him, we have nothing. So this day, let us receive the mercy that we absolutely need. Let us receive the peace that only comes from him. And let us receive the love that has been poured out on all of humanity—including you. Through him, live in the more of Christ in you today. Then your life will be to the glory of God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. That is the prayer that I have for my own soul. That’s the prayer that I have for my family, for my wife and my daughters and my son. And that’s the prayer that I have for you. May it be so. They have all the food they need. No, this famine is for something far more essential to life. There is a famine for the Word of God. People are filling themselves and their lives with every imaginable thing. They're feasting on things that in the end leave them empty and starving. If we make this life about satisfying our appetites, we end up famished and starving in the end. Jesus put it this way: People do not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God. Christ is that bread of life. Our souls will never truly be satisfied until they are satisfied in him who is the living Word. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. And in Isaiah we read this: Why spend your money on food that does not give you strength? Why pay for food that does no good? Listen to me and you will eat what is good. You will enjoy the finest food. God is urging us—listen to me and eat what is good. Enjoy the finest of food. Stop starving. He has graciously placed a feast before us that we have paid nothing for. He simply asks that we come and eat. Are you restless? Tired? Hungry? Famished? Today there's no need to go hungry. The Living Word is here for you. And His Word is gracious towards you. It's the Bread of life. It's free of charge. It's Him. Come daily to the table and feast on his goodness, his peace, grace, forgiveness, his mercy and his love. Draw the strength, the joy, all that you need from him today. That's the prayer that I have for my own soul. That's the prayer that I have for my family, for my wife and my daughters and my son. And that's the prayer that I have for you. May it be so. Today, we'll explore Amos chapters 4 through 6, Psalms 86 and 87, and Titus chapter 1, asking God for guidance and wisdom as we seek to see Jesus more clearly. Together with listeners from around the world, we'll reflect on what God truly desires from His people—a life transformed from the inside out, full of justice, mercy, and love, made possible by Christ, the source of all living water. As we share in prayer and dive into the Word, be encouraged and strengthened in the unfailing love of God. TODAY'S DEVOTION: What does God want to see in our lives? Is it the grand gestures—the big religious festivals, the impressive gatherings, the big houses or accomplishments—that catch God's eye? According to the words of Amos, that's not what God is after. Heather reminds us that God desires something entirely different: a heart transformed from the inside out, a heart set free by his love, a heart that loves justice and mercy because it has experienced the forgiveness and freedom of God. Amos 5 tells us plainly: God hates all the show and pretense, the hypocrisy of religious festivals and solemn assemblies. He says, “Away with your noisy hymns of praise…I want to see a mighty flood of justice, an endless river of righteous living.” What God truly wants to see is a flood—a torrent—of justice and an endless river of true righteousness, not something we muster up in our own strength, but something that flows from a different source altogether. Where do these waters come from? They come from Christ Jesus, the source of all living water. In John 7:38, Jesus says, “Anyone who believes in me may come and drink. For the Scriptures declare, rivers of living water will flow from his heart.” All the life God desires to see in us, all the justice and righteousness, flows from Jesus himself. The life that God longs for in his people will only come when we turn to him, when we let him fill us with his own living water, the power of his Spirit. Is anyone thirsty? The call goes out—come and drink, even if you have nothing to offer. His invitation is generous, his table wide open. When we come, we are transformed from the inside out. His Spirit lives and abides in us and, from there, living water pours out of our lives and into a dry and weary world. When God looks at us, this is what he truly wants to see: people set free by his love, who set others free; people living his justice and mercy, being instruments of his peace and pardon; people who bring his life and his joy to a world in need. So let us come to these waters—again and again. Let us drink deeply from Christ. Let us allow his justice, his mercy, his life to overflow from us into the world. Because the life he desires to see is his own life, flowing in and through us. That's a prayer I have for myself, for my loved ones, and for each of us together with Heather: may we come to the living water and let his love and justice be poured out through us. May it be so. Settle in for prayer, teaching, and encouragement as we step into another day rooted in God’s promises and grace. TODAY'S DEVOTION: Paul is nearing the finish line. We see a man who has run well—he’s poured out his life, held nothing back, and now gives us a snapshot of wisdom for the race we’re all running. At the end of this letter, Paul asks for a coat, a book, and a friend. These humble requests hold surprising depth. A coat, because this world gets cold and harsh, and we need covering, warmth, assurance that we’ll make it through. Christ offers us this warmth—his presence in a broken world. Galatians reminds us that we are to clothe ourselves with Christ, putting him on like new clothes, for he alone can break the chill and revive us. Paul also asks for the letters, the book—God’s Word. To run the race well, we need the constant encouragement and instruction that God’s word brings. It shapes, sustains, and strengthens us for each step. Finally, Paul desires a friend—John Mark. Even those who have struggled together, even parted ways before, are brought back by the reconciling power of the gospel. We see that we cannot run this race alone. We need community. In the company of others, we learn to overcome, to forgive, to serve, and to love. The gospel restores estranged friends and draws us back into friendship and fellowship. Paul’s wisdom echoes for us today: we need a coat, a book, and a friend. All three are gifts God offers. Christ covers us, his word directs us, and friends sustain us. Let us wear the warmth of Christ, pick up his word, and be a friend—journeying together to the very end. That’s the prayer I have for my own soul. That’s the prayer I have for my family, for my daughters and my son. And that’s the prayer I have for you. May it be so. Something is informing your life about what is true and what is untrue. False messages come to us in so many ways—through people, experiences, even our own past. Sometimes those messages are not just untrue; they’re harmful, even cruel, and they leave wounds that need healing. What heals those wounds? Healing words—words that act like a salve over our hearts, words that root us in truth. Paul tells Timothy that the Scriptures are used by God and they are profitable. They teach us, correct us, offer us wisdom so that we would trust Christ and receive salvation. Scripture is not just information; it is formation. It teaches us the truth that sets us free and helps us to anchor our lives in Jesus. False messages keep us down, but the good news is that God uses his Word to prepare and equip us for every good work. Through this Word, we’re anchored in what is real—real hope, real freedom, real healing. So, what kind of message are you listening to today? Sink your roots down into the truth of the Gospel, the good news that Christ now lives in you. Through faith in the Son of God, you can change and grow and experience healing—even over those deepest wounds, even here, even now. Let’s allow God’s Word to shape our hearts, heal our hurts, and prepare us to do every good work. That’s the prayer I have for my own soul. Today is June 25th, day 177 of our reading, and your host Hunter will be guiding us through the book of Joel, chapters one through three, and into 2 Timothy chapter 1. In this episode, we witness vivid images of devastation and restoration in Joel, the outpouring of God’s spirit, and a powerful reminder from Paul to fan into flame the gift of faith. Alongside scripture reading, Hunter offers prayer, reflection, and encouragement to tend to the fire of God’s presence in our lives each day. So, open your heart and let’s receive together the words of life from the living Word. TODAY'S DEVOTION: If you want to cook, you're going to need some fire. If you're going to eat, you're going to need some heat. Every day you must fan into flame that gift, that fire that God has ignited in your life. That's what Paul is telling Timothy here. He says, this is why I remind you. Apparently, he's told him this before. This is why I remind you to fan into flames the spiritual gift God gave you when I laid my hands on you. The fire of God's abiding presence in us illuminates our path. It gives us power to live out our purpose. Paul tells Timothy to let it burn. Let it light the path. Fan that into flame. Do all that is necessary to tend to that fire within you, then see what God will do. The same is true for us. God has given us a gift. It's his abiding presence in us. There's a specific purpose that he has uniquely gifted each of us for. And it's the Spirit's fire that will illuminate that path for us and empower us to participate with God and live out our purpose even in this day. As you abide in him and walk with him and trust him, the fire of God's presence—his Spirit abiding in you—will show you what's required of you. Ask him to make you diligent to tend to that fire of life, his life in you. May you fulfill all of his purposes for you. That's the prayer that I have for my own soul. That's the prayer that I have for my family, for my wife and my daughters and my son. And that's the prayer that I have for you. May it be so. Grab your Bible, prepare your heart, and let’s warm ourselves by the fires of God’s love together. TODAY'S DEVOTION: God is at work, even when evil wears the crown. Seven years. That’s how long Athaliah, the evil queen, reigned—a time marked by violence, heartbreak, and darkness. She took the throne through bloodshed, even murdering her own grandchildren. Her story reminds us of how deeply entrenched evil can seem, wearing the crown and calling the shots for years on end. She was a daughter of Ahab and Jezebel, a legacy of darkness, and for seven years, all must have seemed lost. But as we read in the story of Joash, we discover that things are not always as they seem and they will not always remain as they are. Hidden away, out of sight, within the quiet places of the temple, was hope—a child, a son, preserved by God’s providence. God’s kingdom was advancing even when no one could see it, even when hopelessness filled the air. At just the right time, Joash was revealed and crowned, the entrenched evil uprooted, and hope restored to the people. This is a picture—a compelling, even if incomplete, foreshadowing—of what God is doing not just in the pages of ancient scripture, but in our own stories. Behind the scenes, beneath the surface, God is always at work. Sometimes it feels as if evil is too strong, too established, and nothing will ever change. But the true King—God’s own Son, Jesus—is waiting for the perfect moment to be revealed in power and glory. Unlike Joash, Jesus does not falter. He does not fail. He is accomplishing all that the Father has given him to do, and he will reign forever. Take hope: there is a real King alive, reigning, and even now, God’s spirit is preparing hearts, overturning evil’s claims, and bringing in his eternal kingdom. Hold on—don’t despair when the world’s headlines or your life’s hardships make it seem otherwise. Trust: your king is coming. That’s the good news for us. Behind the tangled mess of our circumstances, behind every “crown” that evil seems to put on, God is present. He is faithful, bringing light in the darkness and hope in the silence. Let us live with that hope. Let us wait on the Lord, trusting that at just the right time, he reveals his salvation. May today you sense—beyond what you see or feel—the steady, unstoppable advance of God’s kingdom in and through you. That is my prayer for my soul today, for my family, and for you. May we hold fast to this hope, and may it change how we wait, how we watch, and how we worship. Amen. On today’s episode, we journey through powerful and turbulent moments in Israel’s history, reading from 2 Kings 10, 2 Chronicles 22 and 23, and 1 Timothy 5. We’ll witness the violent zeal of Jehu as he wipes out Baal worship, the rise of young King Joash in Judah through courage and faith, and receive practical teachings from Paul on caring for widows and elders in the early church. Together, we’ll reflect on the shortcomings of human zeal compared to the peace, righteousness, and new beginnings offered through God’s radical love in Christ. As we move through scripture and prayer, may you be encouraged to rest in the results of God’s zeal, open your heart to his presence, and walk in his joy today. TODAY'S DEVOTION: Jehu’s devotion was radical and uncompromising—a devotion that expressed itself in violence and zeal. He set out to rid Israel of BAAL worship, and the results were undeniable: temples destroyed, idols shattered, and those loyal to BAAL swept away. Yet that same zeal left the streets soaked in blood and families in ruins. This kind of zealous effort certainly gets results, but it’s not the result God ultimately wants for us. It’s not peace. It’s not the true rightness that our hearts are hungry for. The story reminds us that even the most determined human effort—no matter how passionate or sincere—can only go so far. Human zeal might shake up kingdoms, but it can’t bring about the peace our souls crave. Violence, holy war, radical striving—none of these will yield what we truly need. Our greatest need is not for more striving but for deep, lasting peace with God, for joy and for standing right before him. Those are gifts only one can give. There is only One whose zeal brings what humanity needs. And the results are not the shedding of others’ blood, but in his own—God himself, through Jesus, giving his life in co-suffering, self-giving love for this broken world, for us. Jehu is a flawed mirror—a shadow pointing forward to a greater zeal, a purer power. In Christ, we see the true answer to the question of what brings redemption. Isaiah told us: “For a child is born, a son is given… and the government will rest on his shoulders… the zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this.” It’s God’s zeal—not ours, not Jehu’s, not anyone else’s—that wins the right results in our lives and this world. God’s passion in Christ has given us a new beginning, true freedom, and real joy. Everything that needs to be accomplished for us has already been done by Jesus. No one else will do. No other zeal is enough. Let us rest in the results of his zeal. Let us put down the burden of striving to be enough or do enough. Instead, may we abide in what Christ has finished for us—the peace, the standing, the welcome, and new life his love has won. That’s the prayer I’m praying today for my own heart, for my family, and for you. May it be so. Throw yourself into your tasks so that everyone will see your progress. Keep a close watch on how you live and on your teaching. Let’s turn our hearts together to today’s reading, prayer, and reflection. TODAY'S DEVOTION: The life of faith is a mystery. Sometimes, all we can see is what’s right before us—the armies that surround us, the troubles that besiege us, the hopelessness that presses in. But faith is not limited by our circumstances or by what our eyes can see. In 2 Kings 6, Elisha and his servant are faced with a terrifying sight: they are completely surrounded by a great army. The servant can only see defeat and death. Yet Elisha moves within a deeper mystery—a mystery that faith reveals. Elisha prays that his servant’s eyes might be opened, and the Lord answers. Suddenly, the servant sees the hills filled with horses and chariots of fire. What was invisible becomes visible. God was present and fighting for them all along. That is the mystery of faith: there is always more going on than we know. God is at work in the hidden places, in the things we cannot yet see. And the story grows even more mysterious: God does not destroy the enemy army. Instead, those who came in blindness and hostility are led into the very heart of their enemy’s city—not to be destroyed, but to be given a feast. A table is set for them, and they are sent away in peace. Those once far off, now are brought near; those blind are given sight. This is the mystery we see fully revealed in Jesus. In Christ, God opens our eyes—those who are near and far, friend and enemy—to see his love, his peace, his welcoming banquet. In Jesus, the perfect human life is lived before us. He loves God with all his heart, soul, mind, and strength, and he loves his neighbor, even when the neighbor is an enemy. For the first time, we see this love embodied in its fullness. God’s grace is for all. He opens blind eyes, he welcomes the stranger, he prepares a banquet for those who don’t deserve it. The mystery of our faith is that God is so good, so loving, so gracious—to you, to me, and to the world. May our own eyes be opened to this mystery today. May we see God’s hand at work beyond our circumstances, and may we learn to love as he loves—near and far, friend and enemy. That's a prayer I have for myself, for my family, and for you. May it be so. The woman of Shunam knew this in her deepest places. She knew she needed God's man—Gehazi or anyone else simply would not do. She believed that somehow this one man could bring her boy back to life, could make things right in the face of loss and despair. Elisha goes to the boy, and in a strange, intimate act, lies upon him—face to face, hand to hand, eye to eye. It’s as if the man of God is absorbing the boy’s death into himself, pouring life back where there was none. In this moment, we catch a foreshadowing of another Man who would one day absorb death itself—not just for one boy, but for the whole world. This Man, Christ Jesus, would take on sin, death, and the grave, and through his own sacrifice, defeat death and pull us close to himself—face to face, hand to hand, eye to eye. God has come in the flesh. He has come to rescue us from death and draw us into life eternal. Jesus—the prophet of prophets, the Lamb of God, the Savior of the world—he alone can make things right in us, for us, and through us. Paul put it plainly: “For there is one God and one mediator who can reconcile God and humanity—the man Christ Jesus. He gave his life to purchase freedom for everyone.” Death has been defeated. Through Christ, true life is offered. In him, we stand face to face with the one who brings us out of death and into resurrection life, even now. May God open our eyes today to see it—to see him, to trust him, and to live in the power and joy of his resurrected presence. That’s a prayer for my own soul. That’s a prayer for my family, for my wife and my daughters, and my son. And that’s a prayer I have for you. May it be so. TODAY'S DE TODAY'S DEVOTION: Don’t Miss the Point We are so prone to miss the point when we misapply the law. We think that being right with God will come from getting all the rules just so, or being an expert in Scripture, but that can lead us down a path of pride and arrogance—or to self-loathing and despair. When we try to justify ourselves by the law, we find ourselves engaged in a colossal exercise in missing the point. Paul put it clearly to Timothy: “Some people have missed the whole point. They have turned away from these things and spend their time in meaningless discussions.” The simple, profound gospel received by faith is what fills our hearts with love, cleanses our conscience of guilt, and makes us new. Paul reminds Timothy of this central truth: the purpose of this whole instruction—the point—is that believers would be filled with love that comes from a pure heart, a clear conscience, and genuine faith. This is the real deal. This is the work that God longs to do in us as His Spirit abides in His people: a new heart, a clean conscience, a new life. That’s a gift. It’s not something to be achieved by mastering the law; the change comes from the Master who abides in us. Through His Spirit, God is reclaiming what was lost. Be certain of this: the power and beauty of the gospel isn’t about us mastering the law, but letting the Master master us. When we surrender our hearts, when we let God be God within us, living in the reality of “Christ in you,” we are far less likely to miss the love, generosity, and peace that we long for. That life will be yours—and when it is, you’ll have something beautiful to offer the world. That’s the prayer I have for my own soul. That’s the prayer I have for my family, for my wife, my daughters, and my son. And that’s the prayer I have for you. May it be so. TODAY'S DEVOTION: Micaiah, the truth-speaking prophet, is a light. In the face of deceit and dark kingdoms and dark prophets, he is a light. God always has his lights. Those who speak the truth. Micaiah is one of them. God always has his lights because he is the Father of lights. That's what James tells us. He has men and women who are faithful to shine their light in the darkness and to speak the truth for the Lord, regardless of the results. Paul was one of these lights too. Paul desired to shine the truth of the Gospel of Christ into the darkness. Paul knew how hard it could be. In fact, he wrote Colossians while he was in chains, and it only got worse from there. Yet he is still determined to shine the light. But he asked his friends for prayer. He says, pray that I will proclaim this message as clearly as I should. He knows it's going to be hard, but he also knows that he is a child of the light and he's called to shine in the darkness. God, the Father of lights, is not just the Father of prophets and apostles like Paul and Micaiah. He's also the Father of ordinary people like you and me. And like those mentioned at the end of today's reading—these are names of people that rarely get a second thought. But they too are born into the light of our Father. And they are being faithful to carry out the ministry that their Father God has given to them. To Archippus, Paul says, be sure to carry out the ministry the Lord has given you. There were other people's names like Demas, Epaphras, Archippus, Tycheus, Nympha, Onesimus, and people like you and me with names like Craig, Rebecca, Tom, Mary Ellen, Luz. All are lights born of the Father. All of us have a ministry to shine his bright light in this dark world. Paul asked for prayer: Pray that I will proclaim this message as clearly as I should. He also exhorts others to carry out the ministry that God has given them. And the Father has shone the light of Christ into you. You have been given the light of the world. Allow him to bear light in your heart. Do what God has called you to do in his strength, reflecting back to him the glory that is only his. And let us all together learn what it is to shine our lights. That's the prayer that I have for my own soul. That's the prayer that I have for my family, for my wife, my daughters, my son. And that's the prayer that I have for you. May it be so. I have three daughters, and every once in a while, someone will ask me, "Hunter, who's your favorite?" And I have to chuckle, because my mind doesn't even go there. I don't think in terms of one daughter being favored over another—they're all my kids, all my girls, and I love them dearly. I have no favorites. And we're told that God, too, has no favorites. We are all his children. It doesn't matter whether we're Abigail, Magdalene, Eden, Hunter, Heather—or you—it doesn't matter. Whether we are Jew or Gentile, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbaric, uncivilized, slave or free, it doesn't matter. Christ is all that matters, and he lives in all of us. He is the favored one, and our lives are hidden in his. That's what Paul says. Our real life is hidden with God in Christ, the favored one. He has no favorites because we are all favored. We are all loved. We have been included. God has reconciled the whole world to himself, Paul says. He has no favorites because we are all loved by him. And that, my friend, is such good news. And the prayer of my own heart today is that I will see who I am in Christ: favored and loved. That's a prayer I have for my family, too, for my daughters, for my wife, and for you. May it be so. I’m Hunter, your Bible reading coach, and today we open our hearts together as we read through First Kings chapters 17 to 19 and Colossians chapter 2. As we witness Elijah’s dramatic confrontation on Mount Carmel and Paul’s stirring reminder to hold fast to Christ, we’ll reflect on what it means to listen for God’s voice in a noisy world. Join us as we learn to be still, to receive, and to know that the God who answers is with us—calling us to trust, to abide, and to walk in His peace. Let’s begin today’s journey with open ears and expectant hearts. TODAY'S DEVOTION: God answers, but are we listening? The contest was to see which God would answer with fire. And today's reading shows us the results. Amidst all the rattle and hum and the fits and fury, they just couldn't conjure up the results that our hearts are calling for—the hope, the light, the peace, the victory that we were frankly made for. The writers made it clear: some gods do not answer, but there is a God who does. On top of Mount Carmel today, there is a monastery in the Carmelite order. One of the unique things about some of the communities of the Carmelite order is that they take a vow of silence. And maybe it's a fitting thought that there, on the top of Mount Carmel today, there are people who are in prayer and who are being silent. They're being silent not because there's nothing to hear or listen to. They're being silent for that very reason—because there is something to hear. There is a God. And our God speaks. He has an answer for our souls, an answer for the questions of our heart, an answer to our burden and our brokenness. There is a God who answers, and he doesn't require our fits and our fury. He doesn't need us to conjure up anything. Ours is to be still and know, to be still and listen to the God who's present, the one who's with us, the one who is victorious—the God who answers. The prayer of my own soul today is that I will learn to listen, that I'll learn to quiet my heart and trust. That I'll learn that he is here with me even now. That's the prayer that I have for my own soul. That's the prayer that I have for my family. That's the prayer that I have for you. May it be so.
