TODAY'S DEVOTION: He came to you because you couldn't come to him. As Hunter and Heather reflected, the message of the law and the prophets teaches us that we need to come to God. John the Baptist shouts it from the wilderness—come to God, confess, and be baptized. But in this story, something unexpected happens: God comes to us. Jesus comes, asking to be baptized by human hands. It’s a turning point. John asks, "Why are you coming to me?"—because he knows we are the ones who need to go to God. But the gospel tells us a deeper truth: try as we might, we falter. We know God is worthy of all our allegiance and devotion, yet we fail. The Law reminds us of this vast distance, but Jesus crosses it for us. He comes because we are truly incapable of making the journey to him on our own. That is the good news. God loves us so much that he has come to us, doing for us what we could never do for ourselves. God has not waited for us to show our love for him before he showed his love for us. The news is better than we can imagine—God’s love is already here, preceding every striving and every attempt to reach him. Today, let the answer of Jesus to John ring in your heart. He made up the distance for you, because you couldn’t. He did this out of love—for you, for the whole world. Let that truth transform your mind and fill you with joy. TODAY'S DEVOTION: God delights to show himself strong through weakness. Paul was being called out for his weakness. There were some who apparently faulted him for not being the most dynamic, flamboyant speaker. “Super apostles” had come to town and were adding to the confusion of this church, preaching another gospel that was not the gospel at all. But here, Paul takes the opportunity to teach us something vital about real power, real strength, real authority. In God’s kingdom, these are not revealed through flashy presentations or impressive outward displays. Instead, God’s strength is most clearly seen in our weakness. Paul accomplished so much—traversing much of the known world, planting churches, speaking before kings and governors, writing letters, discipling people who would disciple generations to come. Yet, when he lists his accomplishments, Paul points not to his triumphs, but to times of trial, peril, persecution, poverty, and personal struggle. Why? Because these moments of struggle and weakness were the places where the power of Christ showed up most clearly in his life. We, too, experience this. When things are falling apart, when we’re broken down, when we don’t know what to do, these are the times when we find God’s strength to be most real and present. The greatest displays of strength are not found in confident boasts from a platform, but in humble dependence when we most know our need. So don’t miss this gift—amid all the noise, teachings, and impressive personalities around us, remember: God’s grace is all we need. His power is made perfect in our weakness. Like Paul, may we learn to boast not in our strength, but in our need, trusting that it is there the power of Christ will rest upon us. That’s the prayer I have for my own soul. That’s the prayer I have for my family, for my wife and my daughters and my son. And that’s the prayer I have for you. May it be so. Can you afford to live a generous Christian life? Do you have strength to defend yourself against spiritual attack—or, forget about spiritual attack, just plain old discouragement, depression, or self-loathing? We all need strength to overcome these things, whether spiritual or otherwise. Paul reminds us in the previous chapters where our riches for generous living and the strength for our struggles come from. They come from the One who alone is rich enough and strong enough. They come from Christ. Christ in you. So, do you want to live a life that is generous and strong? Then Christ will be the source of your strength and the source of your riches—your heart partnering with him to serve, to give, to endure, and to be healed. Yesterday's reading sets this up for us: it says that God's power is working in us. And now, in today’s passage, 2 Corinthians 7:1, we read, "Because we have these promises, dear friends, let us cleanse ourselves from everything that can defile our body or spirit. Let us work toward complete holiness because we fear God." So, what’s the promise? It’s the promise of Christ’s presence in you. What are the earmarks of holy living? Generosity and strength. Because Christ lives in you, you are able to cleanse yourself from everything that defiles your body and spirit. Now, you have the strength and generosity to move forward and to experience real change. Because you fear God, because Christ lives in you, you have what you need. Can you afford a generous life? It depends on how rich you are. Do you have the strength you need to move forward? Well, that depends on how strong you are. How rich are you? How strong are you? If Christ is in you, then you have all the riches you need and then some. If Christ is in you, then you have all the strength you need and then some. And I’m here to tell you, Christ is in you. As John said, "The one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world." So because we have these promises, we can live the Christian life. Let's be awakened today by the presence of God in you, your true life which is hidden in Him. You have been fully embraced in Christ just as you are in Him. You are a new creation, and because of Him, you can be wise and generous—strong. And the prayer of my own heart today is that we will all begin to see this just a little bit more today than we did yesterday. That’s the prayer I have for my own soul. That’s the prayer I have for my family—for my wife, my daughters, my son. And that’s the prayer I have for you. May it be so. TODAY'S DEVOTION: God is calling us back home. All of creation seems to understand this ache, this homing pull. On the Oregon coast, salmon and migratory birds instinctively know to return to the place where their journey began, even though they can't explain it. It’s as if they’re responding to a deep inner voice—come back, come home. Within each person there is a spiritual homing device, meant to lead us to our true home in God. The ache for home was damaged through Adam, but in Christ it has been mended. We are no longer lost; God has reconciled us to Himself and made a way for every man, woman, and child to return to the origin of their design. As Heather shared from 2 Corinthians, God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, no longer counting people's sins against them. Now we have the great privilege and calling to share this ministry of reconciliation, to invite others toward home. Responding to God’s call is like the salmon’s journey. When they leave the salt water for fresh, transformation begins—they are being prepared by nature for the final leg of their journey. In the same way, the Spirit transforms us as we turn toward God, as we say yes to the call to come home. That new life takes root as we walk this way—a life that is a gift, a life reconciled, restored, forgiven. Heather reminds us: the ache is real, and so is home. God does not leave us broken and wandering, but comes to mend us, to give us direction, to make us whole. Now, through His Spirit and love, we are equipped and commissioned to encourage others to hear that same invitation—come home to God. As we journey toward Him, transformation bears fruit in our hearts; new life is born. Let us remember the call and extend it to those around us. Let our lives and our words speak of this amazing reconciliation, of God’s relentless love and mercy. May the Spirit unscramble our hearts, guide us, and give us strength for the path. That is my prayer today—for my own soul, for my family, and for you. May we hear the voice and step boldly toward our true home in God. May we invite others and find joy in the journey together. Are we known—are you known—as someone who offers grace, kindness, a listening ear when someone has stumbled or is hurting? The invitation in today’s scriptures is clear: where you go for comfort and forgiveness will help determine where those around you go when they’re in need. If you turn to your gracious Father, receive comfort from the Spirit, and drink deeply of forgiveness from Christ, then others—those who may be carrying heavy burdens of sorrow or failure—will know they can come to you. When your life is rooted in grace, it becomes a place of sanctuary for those seeking mercy. Hunter urges us: go to the cross, go to Christ, go to your loving Savior. He forgives freely and does not treat us as our sins deserve. As the psalm says, “He does not repay us according to our iniquities.” If you’re daily receiving grace and mercy, you’ll become someone others trust to receive it from too. Paul asks, “Who is adequate for such a task as this?”—the task of comforting, restoring, forgiving. There’s only one who is truly able: Christ alone. Yet Jesus invites us to participate with Him in sharing His comfort and grace. When we go to Him, we’re empowered to offer the real comfort and real forgiveness the world aches for. That’s a prayer Hunter has for his own soul, for his family, and for all of us. May we become people who are known as vessels of Christ’s comfort and forgiveness—not just for our sake but for the sake of a world in need. May it be so. TODAY'S DEVOTION: Our profession is a declaration of inclusion. Paul is passing on to us something of utmost priority. He says, “I pass on to you what was most important and what has also been passed on to me. Christ died for your sins, just as the Scriptures say. He was buried and he was raised from the dead on the third day.” What’s this all-important message that Paul has for us? Paul urges us to stand firm in the reality that Christ died for our sins and was raised—just as the Scriptures say. But the heart of Paul’s message about the resurrection isn’t simply a matter of agreeing with a historic fact. It isn’t merely checking a box, or parroting words we know we’re supposed to say as Christians. What Paul wants us to grasp is that our declaration that “Christ is risen” is also a declaration of our inclusion in his resurrection life. Our profession is not just about what God has done but about what we have become: we are woven into Christ’s death and his glorious resurrection. To say, “I believe in the resurrection,” is to say that you are united with Christ and made new in him. It means waking up to the true reality of who you are—beloved by God, forgiven, made new, a child belonging forever to his family. When you begin to see what God has done, you start to see yourself differently—and others, too. The work of Christ transforms not only our identity but also our sight. We’re called to set our hearts on things above, to know that we’ve been raised with Christ, seated with him in heavenly places. Let’s embrace this resurrection reality—not just as something to agree with but to live and embody. Let it permeate your relationships, how you see others, and how you walk through each day. See it. Believe it. Dare to live in the newness of life that is yours in Christ. That's my prayer for my own soul. That's a prayer for my family, for my wife, for my daughters and my son. We can pursue many things, but if we fail to pursue love in this life, we are lost. Love is the foundation of our lives. Love orders our lives and our communities. The extent to which we love is the extent that our lives will function as they ought, having order and peace among ourselves and within ourselves. It all begins with love. But here's the kicker. We can't give what we don't have. And we can't live a well ordered life of love if we haven't experienced love. So let me ask you, are you loved? Have you felt it? Do you know it? If not, I understand. It can be hard to know and feel. And sometimes we get mixed messages. Sometimes we're told that God is love, but then we say other things about God that don't seem loving at all. That's why I'm so eager and so committed to stating that fact each and every day to myself as well as to you. And that fact is this, that you are loved by a God who is love, full stop. Doesn't need to be qualified with anything other than that. Because everything about God flows from his love. And that's why I come to the Word each and every day, to remind myself. I want to remind you. When we come to the Word, the living word that is Jesus, we're able to see that God is love. We see it in everything about Jesus. He is the Word of God. And he is conspiring to reveal to us the extent of his love demonstrated in his coming to us, the incarnation, in his life, his death, his resurrection, his ascension. Everything about him is demonstrating to all of creation who God is. Galatians 4:19—Paul says this: Oh, my dear children, I feel as though I'm going through labor pains for you again. And they will continue until Christ is fully developed in your lives. May Christ be formed in you. Fully developed—his love, fully developed in our lives, healing us, setting us free. May you know his love today. May you feel it today. May you understand it today as you look to Him. That's a prayer that I have for my own soul. That's the prayer that I have for my family, for my wife and my daughters and my son. And that's the prayer that I have for you. May it be so. Have you discovered the way of life? The body of Christ, in all its rich variety, is made for life. It derives its life from the one who is life itself. So have you found the Way of life? What is the way of life? First Corinthians 12:6 tells us plainly: God works in different ways, but it is the same God who does the work in all of us—God in us. In all of us. The way of life is God expressing himself in us. It is God in the hand, in the eye, in the ear, in the man, in the woman, in the boy, in the girl. It is God in me and God in you. The way of life is God expressing himself through your uniquely created, gifted self. Do you have peace with who you are? Do you have patience with where you are? Are you confident with yourself? Are you confident with what God has asked of you? To the extent that you realize that God is at work in you, that will be the extent that you discover and live in the way of life. There’s another way of living that is not life. And that, of course, is to deny or to fail to see or recognize or welcome the life that you have in him. We fail to surrender to his life and instead demand our own. But when we do live the way of life, God uses the unique ways that he has created and gifted us in service to his kingdom for our own joy, so that others might know and experience his love. He enables us to help others find the way of life and to awaken to the reality of Christ in them. Paul wants to show us the way of life today—verse 31: “But now let me show you a way of life that is best of all.” And the prayer of my own heart today is that we will see it, that we will know it, that we will receive it, that we will live in it. That’s a prayer that I have for my own soul. That’s a prayer that I have for my family, too—my wife and my daughters, my son. And that’s a prayer that I have for you. May it be so. Yet, as Hunter reminds us, this is precisely what Jesus did the night he was betrayed. He served, he waited on his disciples. He was their waiter; he gave of himself on their behalf. In doing this, Jesus set the humble example for us all: to wait, to serve, to give ourselves for the sake of others. When we take this posture, remembering Christ by serving and preferring others, we make room for the Holy Spirit to work—not just in our own lives, but in the life of the church. Waiting becomes a simple spiritual discipline, one that opens us up to experience Christ’s life and participate with him in his transforming work. Paul’s words in 1 Corinthians challenge us: "When you gather for the Lord’s Supper, wait for each other." It’s simple, but necessary. Waiting reflects a posture that allows Christ alone to do what only he can do among us. As we gather in our churches, as we share at the Lord’s table, let us be reminded to wait, to serve, to learn to give ourselves for others. That’s a prayer Hunter has for his own soul, for his family—his wife, daughters, and son—and for you. May we learn to live this out in our homes, our communities, and our daily lives. May it be so. In today’s reading, Paul makes a remarkable statement that challenges how we so often measure spiritual maturity and inclusion. He writes, “There is one God, the Father, by whom all things were created and for whom we live. And there is one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom all things were created and through whom we live.” This is the kind of central truth you’d expect every believer to know, and yet Paul says, “However, not all believers know this.” What a surprise. Even those who don’t grasp the most basic tenets of faith are still counted as part of the community. We might think—in our churches and small groups and ministries—that knowing the right things, saying the right things, and praying the right things is the ticket in. But that’s not Paul’s view. Inclusion isn’t about how much you know—it’s about being known by God, the God who is love. Love gives itself to those who don’t know, to all of us. Love lays down privilege and knowledge and lifts up those who are weak and uncertain. So Paul’s advice is radical: let love be your guide. Let love direct your actions, and respond to those who “don’t know” with patience, grace, and self-giving. Love is our catechism; it’s our teacher and our guide. Whatever knowledge we possess, it should never stand above love, but always submit to it—for love instructs us in all we need to know, in God’s perfect timing. Let love be our first concern, and then let’s see what God will do. That’s a prayer for my own soul, for my family—my wife, my daughters, my son—and it’s a prayer for you. May it be so. He's not trying to present himself as a great philosopher or a renowned debater. He has a simple and sincere spirit-empowered message. And it's so contrary to what the world would expect. So much so that he calls it the foolish preaching of the cross. He presents the simple, sincere, self-empowered foolish preaching of the cross. That message is that God in his love has offered his dearly loved Son to redeem humanity, to restore and renew all that was lost. God has loved all of humanity so much that he became one of us. He came to us in self-giving, radically forgiving, co-suffering love. And on the cross, he has defeated death, despair, and the grave and drawn us to himself. On the cross, God fully revealed to us his loving heart, the precious value of every human life—including yours. Now we can know who God is and who we have become in Him. This is the foolish message of the cross. And it's for you, it's for me, it's for everyone. So today we rest in that, we rejoice in that. And we ask the Holy Spirit to open our eyes that we might see more and more of what God has done, who he is, and what we have become. That's the prayer that I have for my own soul. That's the prayer that I have for my family, for my wife, my daughters, my son. And that's the prayer that I have for you. May it be so. TODAY'S PRAYERS: Lord God Almighty and everlasting father you have brought us in safety to this new day preserve us with your Mighty power that we might not fall into sin or be overcome by adversity. For followers of Jesus, there is a motivating principle that surpasses all others—the cross. In today's reading, we’re reminded by Paul that it is not religious piety, not personal aspirations, achievements, or even politics, that form the foundation of our life. These things may have their place, they may serve the world in certain ways, but they are not what we are called to live by, or live for. Paul declares, “May I never boast about anything except the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ.” The cross stands as the central principle—the banner under which we live. Because of the cross, our interest in the fleeting things of this world has been crucified, and the world’s interest in us has died. What matters most is whether we have been transformed into a new creation in Christ. This new creation was made possible at the cross, where the Creator was undone for us, so that something new could be born through him in us. It is now his life that expresses itself in love through us, and this, Paul tells us, is what really counts. “May God's peace and mercy be upon all who live by this principle,” Paul writes. “They are the new people of God.” This is the principle: from the cross, through his new people, God moves out into the world, making all things new. As God’s new creation, you are invited to build your life on him, to live in the joy, the strength, and the wisdom that Jesus won for you on the cross. So let’s make this our prayer: to let this principle govern our lives, our families, our communities. Let the transforming love of Christ, shown at the cross, become the foundation of all that we do. May it shape our heart, our mind, our relationships, and our purpose. This is my prayer for my own soul, for my family, for my wife, my daughters, my son—and for you. May it be so. When you woke up to the gift that God had given you in Christ and the truth of who you have now become in Christ, none of that happened by trying to become a good law keeper. These dear people in Galatia are being told that they must become circumcised. They must become Jewish converts. They’re being instructed to follow the laws of Moses—the dietary laws, the dates, the deeds—all of it, because all of it would be necessary if they wanted to be counted among God’s people. They’re being told that Jesus was, in effect, a kind of first step to this new life and community. As Jewish converts, they would have to take the next step, and that meant circumcision. It’s out of these pressures that Paul is urging them not to trade their freedom for chains, and the blessing of life for what he calls the curse of the law. Paul is saying that Jesus is the first and only step. The law was never meant to make us right with God. The law was given to come alongside us and convince our hearts of our need for a Redeemer and a Savior. It’s there to point us to the cross—to God’s self-giving, radically forgiving, co-suffering love. It’s faith in what he has done, and what we have now become. That’s where the joy is. And that’s where Paul wants this church—and you and I—to live from. That’s Paul’s plea, not only to the Galatians, but to you and to me. What God has done for you in Christ is all that need be done. Paul wants us to keep our eyes fixed on him—not on ourselves—looking outward and upward and being changed and transformed as we look to him. So let’s fix our eyes on Christ our Savior, on his beautiful life, continuing to look to him in faith, growing in Christ until He is fully formed in us. That’s a prayer that I have for my own soul. The law misapplied will cause you to keep your focus on you—either how well you are doing, or how miserably you are failing. The focus is the same. In the end, it's all you. Paul knew all about the law. He was an expert in the law. But what Paul discovered was the Gospel. And the Gospel turns our eyes off of ourselves, redirecting our focus on to Jesus—not what we have done or haven't done, but on Jesus, what He has done and what we have become in Him. Not I, but Christ, says Paul. Because that's what the Gospel does. It turns us outward to God, into the world as the new creatures that we are. Paul says, "I am crucified with Christ, and the life I now live, I live by the faith of the Son of God who loved me and gave Himself for me." Paul has discovered that his real life is in Christ, not in obedience to the law. And this was his message. And he would not let anyone distort or change that message—not even Peter. So when Peter began to insist on Gentiles obeying the law of circumcision, he rebuked him publicly. Where are you looking? Inward, onto yourself? Are you looking to your own piety to get you in the good graces of God? Or are you looking outward, away from yourself and onto Jesus—the One who loves you and who is with you, the One who has made you and reclaimed you? Look to Him. Keep your eyes focused on Him, and don't let the law or anyone move your gaze anywhere else. That's the prayer that I have for my own soul. That's the prayer that I have for my family, for my wife, my daughters, my son. And that's the prayer that I have for you. May it be so. Pilate agreed to release Barabbas in exchange for the King of the Jews. This is what the crowd wanted. This is the deal that was struck. A revolutionary for a king. Barabbas wasn’t the first revolutionary to rise up in revolt. There was an earlier revolutionary that rose up against God and his kingdom—Adam. Adam was deceived, and he rose up in revolt. And when he did that, death and murder entered the world. Since the first uprising, uprisings, murder, death, suffering, pain, have never stopped. But Mark gives us an answer to the uprising, to the revolt. And the answer is someone far greater. Mark gives us one last glimpse of the son of God, the King of the Jews. Jesus came, and he offers himself as a substitute for Barabbas and Adam and you and me—all of us who have rebelled against God and his kingdom. This King made a way for all rebels to be free, just like Barabbas. He made the way for all of us to live a life free from the power of sin and the grave. It’s a prisoner exchange. Barabbas, the son of Adam, is going to be free. And in his place will be the one who they call the King of the Jews. Mark wants you to see him as the substitute, the one given in exchange for rebels. He is the one who sets us free and puts an end to the rebellion, leading us to life beyond the grave, leading to the renewal of all things. Live in the freedom that he gives you with gratitude. And live in the strength of the One who truly is the Son of God. That’s a prayer that I have for my own soul. That’s a prayer that I have for my family, for my wife, my daughters, my son. And that’s the prayer that I have for you. May it be so. They begin with a promise, a kiss, a sword, and a severed ear. We're all deaf, so it seems, to God's Word. We've all denied and betrayed the living Word. We're all suffering, as it were, with severed ears and lips that betray. We use our lips to declare our allegiance and our affection. And in the end, we deny and we run away and we betray three times. Loyal Peter uses his mouth to deny that he even knows Jesus. And the most disloyal Judas uses his mouth to betray Jesus with a kiss. Loyal and disloyal alike can't get their mouths to be true. Everyone lies, everyone denies. Their mouths don't work, in part because their ears don't work. Jesus has been telling them that he is the one who will fulfill all Scripture. He is the suffering servant Isaiah spoke about; he would win their victory by his suffering and death. Time and time again, he tried to tell them, but they can't hear it. Like the temple guard, their ears have been severed, unable to hear. It appears we've all been rendered deaf to the word of God. But Jesus is unflinching in the face of our lying lips and deaf ears. Jesus will continue to fulfill all scripture. He will continue on his journey to the cross and he will heal our ears along the way. He will reattach ears that have been severed, unable to hear, causing them to hear again the life-giving words of the Gospel. And when he is done, he will create something even more amazing. He will create new hearts, making us completely new from the inside out. New mouths, new ears, new hearts, new women, new men from every tribe and nation, language and tongue, all will be made new. That's what Jesus has done. Sometimes my mouth and ears and heart, they don't work. But Jesus is unflinching. Even now he is completing the job he set out to do. And faithful is the one who began his good work in you. He will be faithful to complete it. Hallelujah. My prayer is that we would live in the Spirit. Then our mouths and ears and hearts will work and we will be awakened to the miracle of the resurrection to life and hope through Christ. That's the prayer that I have for my soul, friends. The episode closes in prayer and gratitude, encouraging us to let the joy of the Lord be our strength and to remember: you are loved. TODAY'S DEVOTION: A fig tree is cursed. A temple is overturned, tenant farmers are killed, and a vineyard is reclaimed and given to others. What's happening? Judgment is happening. Judgment is coming to God's people. Jesus is pointing to judgment. The passage in Mark reads almost like the Old Testament prophets like Jeremiah and Isaiah, impending judgment is coming. He curses the tree and he overturns the temple. A new way of approaching God has arrived. A new priest and a new king are being revealed. There is a new temple and a new way of living in God. Jesus points to this when he quotes from Psalm 110. After Jesus is questioned, he gathers a crowd together and he asks them why the teachers of religious law claim that the Messiah is the son of David. David himself, speaking under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, said, the Lord, said to my Lord, sit in the place of honor at my right hand until I humble your enemies beneath your feet. Since David himself called the Messiah my Lord, how can the Messiah be his son? The large crowd listened to him with great delight. I encourage you to read Psalm 110. It's a short seven verse chapter. It's about Melchizedek. He's a somewhat mysterious person that shows up in Genesis 14. And Abraham, the father of faith, acknowledges that Melchizedek is an eternal priest. And King Abraham demonstrates his allegiance to this King and priest, by offering him a tithe of all that he has. Abraham himself is a subject of this priest and king. Jesus is teaching us in this passage that he is a priest in the order of Melchizedek. He is the fulfillment of this new way, this new system that God is revealing in the person of Christ. The fig tree is cursed and the temple has been turned over. God is making all things new with a new king and a new priest in the order of Melchizedek. He is the king, eternal God, most high. People of faith like Abraham are going to come and serve him and be his subjects. There will be people great and small who serve him. In fact, this chapter ends with Jesus watching in the temple. And as a woman many thought was very small, a widow who had nothing but two pennies enters. She comes because she is faithful. She believes. She comes and offers all that she has. Her two pennies. They are an offering of faith because she is a person of faith. Jesus tells us to look closely at her. He also tells us in Psalm 110 to look closely at Abraham. These are people of faith. They live and worship in spirit and in truth. Look closely at Abraham, the widow and Melchizedek and let your eye be drawn even closer to Jesus. He is looking at you and inviting you to join in with him in his new kingdom life. Two times, we see not enough bread—first, not enough for the multitude, and then, not enough for the disciples in the boat. In both cases, human resource falls short. Seven loaves for thousands is never enough, and one loaf among twelve is not sufficient. Like the disciples, we find ourselves living in a world of scarcity—coming up short, not just with bread, but perhaps with strength, wisdom, patience, or hope. But Jesus invites us to look beyond the insufficiency of what we have—to beware the yeast that inflates and deceives, whether it’s the power of religion or the ways of the world. He points to a deeper reality: The bread we need does not come from ourselves or our striving. The bread that truly sustains comes from heaven. Jesus is that bread—He alone is enough, and more than enough. When He gives of Himself, there is abundance: basketfuls left over, more than we could ever ask or imagine. So today, as we reflect on our own places of lack or need, we remember that the bread of life is given freely, not earned or purchased by our own efforts. The invitation is simply to partake, to rely on what God alone can provide. Each day, we come to Him for sustenance—for healing, for hope, for strength, for forgiveness—for Himself. Let’s make it our prayer to seek the bread of life, not just for today’s needs, but for our deepest hunger. Christ is enough for us, for our families, for our communities, and for the world. May we abide in what He gives—His own life, His own presence, His own abundance. That’s a prayer that I have for my own soul. That’s a prayer that I have for my family, for my wife, my daughters, and my son. And that’s a prayer that I have for you. May it be so. In the crowd that pressed around Jesus, no one noticed her—not the way they noticed Jairus, the esteemed synagogue ruler, with status and recognition. He could approach Jesus openly, likely with little resistance. But for the bleeding woman, it wasn’t that way. Her life had been reduced to poverty and pain, every resource spent with nothing but disappointment in return. She had lost everything. But still, she held on to a fragile thread of faith—if I can just touch the edge of his robe, I will be healed. It may have felt to her that she was taking something to which she had no right, reaching for what belonged only to those with something to give in return. And yet, she pressed through, believing for mercy, grasping what seemed almost like stealing a gift she could not afford. At the moment her hand met Jesus’ cloak, healing power flowed. She was freed from her suffering—but also overcome with fear, feeling as if she had taken something not hers to take. Yet Jesus, in kindness and compassion, called her forward—not to shame her, but to claim her. “Daughter, your faith has made you well,” he declared. He did not charge her for the healing. He did not turn her away. The gift was for her: free, abundant, and full of grace. Many of us know what it’s like to feel as though life has emptied us out, left us with nothing to show for our efforts. Maybe, like her, we feel unworthy to receive or even approach Jesus. But today’s gospel is clear: his gifts are not earned; they are given. When we come, with whatever faith we have left, he meets us with blessing. Let us live in gratitude, not as thieves in his presence, but as recipients of gracious, abundant life. Jesus reminds us: take the healing, take the gift, walk in peace. Let us hear his words to us: “Daughter, son, your faith has made you well.” That is a prayer I have for my own soul. That is a prayer I have for my family—my wife, my daughters, my son. On this October 29th episode, join your host Hunter as we continue our journey through day 302 in the Scriptures. Today, we explore Job chapter 20, reflect on Zophar’s somber reminder about the fleeting triumph of the wicked, and move into Mark chapters 3 and 4, witnessing Jesus’ power, compassion, and wisdom as he heals, calls his disciples, and teaches through parables. Hunter guides us to pay close attention to the stories Jesus tells—the seed that must die to bring new life, the mysteries of God’s kingdom, and the call to surrender and bear much fruit. TODAY'S DEVOTION: A leaf blade pushes through. We don’t know how it happens, but it happens. The word is planted by a farmer—the seed of God’s word is thrown out into the soil, and whether that farmer sleeps or gets up, that soil, combined with God’s word over time, will create something new. That seemingly dead seed, the result of a dying plant cast into the field, has somehow landed on good soil. And somehow, a leaf blade is about to push through to new life. That which was once dead is about to break forth with life. Jesus tells this story, and he says it’s a story we have to understand if we’re going to know anything about him, if we’re going to have the secrets of the kingdom and of life revealed to us. He’s telling us to pay close attention. The seed must die. If it doesn’t die, it will remain alone, nothing more than just a seed and alone. But if it dies, it will produce many others—some thirty, some sixty, some a hundred times. Its life will reproduce and yield a rich harvest. That life, released in death, is resurrected. Jesus wants us to pay close attention, because in that leaf blade will come a seed. It will come and be planted on the earth—on Mount Calvary’s mountain. There, he, the seed of Abraham, will die, and out of his death will come life. Out of his death will come resurrection and a great harvest of lives—men and women, boys and girls—all made new in him. Jesus says elsewhere, “I tell you the truth, unless a kernel of wheat is planted in the soil and dies, it remains alone. But its death will produce many new kernels, a plentiful harvest of new lives.” And just a few verses later in that same chapter in the Gospel of John, he says, “When I am lifted up from the earth, I will draw everyone to myself.” He’s referring to his crucifixion here. When he—the seed—dies, when he is lifted up on that cross, the result will be everyone being drawn to himself again. Jesus wants us to pay close attention to the story of the seed, the soil, and the farmer. He wants us to see the secret of the kingdom that’s about to be revealed. So let’s pay close attention. Let’s follow his example and give our life away, now that we have been drawn to him, so that we might bear much fruit. That’s a prayer I have for my own soul. But its death will produce many new kernels, a plentiful harvest of new lives.” And just a few verses later in that same chapter in the Gospel of John, he says, “When I am lifted up from the earth, I will draw everyone to myself.” He’s referring to his crucifixion here. When he—the seed—dies, when he is lifted up on that cross, the result will be everyone being drawn to himself again. Jesus wants us to pay close attention to the story of the seed, the soil, and the farmer. He wants us to see the secret of the kingdom that’s about to be revealed. So let’s pay close attention. Let’s follow his example and give our life away, now that we have been drawn to him, so that we might bear much fruit. That’s a prayer I have for my own soul. That’s a prayer I have for my family, for my wife, my daughters, and my son. And that’s a prayer that I have for you. May it be so. The crowds come to listen to Jesus, but Jesus comes to hear the crowds. He’s tuned into the silent voices of hearts speaking trust, hope, and desperate faith. Mark tells us about some friends—four of them—who quietly say with their actions, Let’s push through this crowd. Let’s dig into this roof. Let’s hold onto these ropes. Let’s see what Jesus will do. Their faith isn’t loud, but Jesus perceives it. He sees their determination, he hears their silent prayers and pleading. Mark closely records each small step—pushing through the crowd, digging into the roof, holding on to the ropes, lowering their dear friend to Jesus. Jesus sees it all. And when he does, he responds not only with healing, but with forgiveness. “When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralyzed man, ‘Take heart, son, your sins are forgiven.’” Faith, sometimes, is not just in words but in actions, in persistent movement, in refusing to be discouraged. But within the crowd, others are speaking a different language—a language of disbelief, skepticism, and scorn. Only Jesus hears those words too. “Why does this man speak like that? He’s blaspheming. Who can forgive sins but God alone?” Even as God offers forgiveness and healing, doubt fills the room. Yet Jesus persists. He confronts disbelief, he offers grace, and he calls us to trust him even when others do not. So what is Jesus hearing from you today? Are your words silent prayers of faith, a whisper of hope, or perhaps a desperate plea to break through the darkness? Or do doubts crowd in, pushing back against hope, afraid to believe that God is good and can be trusted? Jesus hears it all. And he calls us to push through, to dig in, to hold on, to believe that his heart is truly good for us. Sometimes, faith—the kind that moves mountains—is simply the kind that pushes through, digs in, and keeps holding on. Mark’s story reminds us: God is good. You can trust him. In your struggle, in your prayers, in your need, let faith whisper, Perhaps God, in his goodness, will help me. TODAY'S DEVOTION: Let God be your navigator. Paul stands before a fearful crew, battered by storm and waves, and says, "I told you so." He points out that their journey would have been spared this damage and loss if they had only waited and listened to God’s direction. It’s best to let God chart the course, to trust in His wisdom rather than our own. But the message here is not just about regret–it's about hope. Even if we’ve gone our own way, even if we’ve navigated into a storm of our own making, God doesn’t leave us stranded. It’s never too late to let Him take the helm and correct our course. There may be consequences, there may be damage, but God will see us through and make us wiser for the journey. Paul urges courage: "None of you will lose your lives even though the ship will go down." When fear threatens to overwhelm, when hope feels lost, God’s Word can steady us. Paul calls the men away from panic and despair, reminding them of the promises and presence of God—even in the eye of a storm. In the darkest moments, God feeds and strengthens us. Paul encourages the crew to eat, to receive nourishment, and sets an example by giving thanks and breaking bread. In this storm, God is present. He invites us to let Him meet us, to let Him be our sustenance, right in the middle of our troubles. Are you in a storm? Have you made choices that led you into darkness or uncertainty? God is waiting to be your navigator, even now, even in the eleventh hour. Let Him meet you where you are, let Him feed and strengthen you, let Him steer you safely home. No matter the storm, no matter how lost you feel, you can trust God to take the helm and guide you. That’s the prayer I have for my own soul. That’s the prayer I have for my family, for my wife and daughters and son. And that’s the prayer I have for you. May it be so. Let’s gather, reflect, and be reminded: we are never alone. You are loved. TODAY'S DEVOTION: Jesus appears to Paul and tells him to be encouraged. Paul, you're going to be my witness here and in Rome. Paul had every reason to be discouraged. Many of his Jewish brothers who had come to Christ were looking with suspicion on him. They didn't quite understand his teaching regarding grace. Those who had rejected the way looked to kill him. He had been beaten and locked up. Once again, he was no doubt discouraged. And then there were those who warned and begged him all along the way not to go to Jerusalem. And all those ominous signs that were spoken to him were now coming to pass. It seemed to be playing out just as they said it would. It was at this lowest point, in the midst of all this discouragement, that Jesus appeared to Paul. Notice that Luke doesn't say that Paul saw Jesus in a vision. Jesus didn't send a holy hologram. Jesus shows up himself, inside the prison cell. And he told Paul to be encouraged. What an incredible moment that must have been for Paul. Imagine Jesus in the cell with you, talking to you, encouraging you. No doubt that moment sustained him for a long time. It encouraged him for many more days to come. Hard days. He had met with Jesus. So he knew that Jesus was somehow directing and overseeing all of this messed-up life that he was in the middle of. Some of you have experienced something like this. Maybe Jesus didn't physically show up with you in a prison cell, but at your lowest, when you were most discouraged, at that moment you experienced God's presence like none other. In the sweetest, most intimate of ways. You experienced an overwhelming sense that God was with you. The Holy Spirit has been given to us and he is called elsewhere in the Bible a counselor, a comforter and an encourager. He is someone who can encourage us when we are in the midst of our hardest moments. The Holy Spirit will shine the light on Jesus and shine the light of Jesus into your life. And when Jesus encourages us, we can hold on, we can keep going on, we can find strength. Jesus is in the room with us even now. Live encouraged. Be strengthened today by the abiding presence of Christ with you. That's the prayer that I have for my own heart. That's the prayer that I have for my family, for my wife and my daughters and my son. And that's the prayer that I have for you. May it be so. We hear Paul in Acts 20 saying farewell to a church that was dear to him, to people he had spent years with, nurturing, living among, pouring out his life for. He tells them this is his final message, entrusting them not to rules or traditions or a complicated system of religious effort, but to the message of God’s grace—grace that builds us up and gives us what we need. “And now I entrust you to God and the message of his grace that is able to build you up and give you an inheritance with all those who have been set apart for himself.” This isn’t just any message. It’s the only message Paul gives. It’s the good news that what we need most—life, forgiveness, inheritance, a way forward—comes to us through Christ alone. We so easily twist this message, turning our attention away from Jesus and onto ourselves—our striving, our trying, our religious observance—as if we could earn or construct what has already been given. But grace is not about trying harder, hoping we measure up or wondering if we’ve done enough. Grace is about resting, trusting, and participating in the life of Christ, knowing that he is enough to make us new, equip us for all of life, and bring us into the fullness of God’s love. Paul’s final charge is simple: build your life on this message. Trust that the work is done, that Christ is enough. Step into his grace, the only ground safe enough and strong enough for our joy, our hope, and our peace. That’s a prayer I have for my own soul. That’s a prayer I have for my family, for my wife, my daughters, my son. And that’s a prayer that I have for you. May it be so. TODAY'S DEVOTION: Aquila and Priscilla and the Invitation to Rest Aquila and Priscilla went to help Apollos. And they want to help us too. They want to point us to our baptism into Christ. Apollos, we're told, only knew about the baptism of John, but Priscilla and Aquila point us beyond that—to our baptism into Christ, an even greater hope and assurance. This is the amazing, liberating news: that God has reconciled us to himself and drawn us into his life. Our identity is not wrapped up in our striving, our performance, or our attempts at holiness. Our identity is in Christ—deeply rooted in what He has done, not what we can do. Baptism, Priscilla and Aquila would remind us, signifies this new reality. Ours is not to strive after some unattainable perfection, but to rest in who Jesus says we are—trusting in His perfection, His holiness, and His love. In Christ, God assumed all of humanity into Himself, so that we might participate in the loving life that Jesus shares with the Father and the Spirit. This is what Priscilla and Aquila invited Apollos to discover: not just a message about repentance, but the ongoing, participatory life in Christ, where we rest, and our joy and strength is found. And that is the invitation laid before us today—to rest in what Jesus has done, to find our strength and joy there. Let’s open the Scriptures together and rekindle our hearts by the fires of God’s love. TODAY'S DEVOTION: Let’s not make it difficult. That’s the heartbeat from today’s reading, echoing from the council at Jerusalem and resounding in the gospel itself. James spoke those words in Acts: let’s not make it difficult for people to come to God. And yet, so often, our human nature, our systems, our religions, much like those early believers who wanted to add circumcision to the requirements of faith, try to put hurdles in the way. The question was, Who is in and who is out? Is it by human effort, tradition, or ritual? Is there some check box, some work or procedure, some pedigree that makes us right with God? But if we’re not careful, the simple invitation of Christ becomes a complicated checklist. The apostles—Paul, Peter, James—they recognized how quickly we can move from freedom into burdens. But the truth, straight from the heart of God, is that nothing stands in the way of experiencing His love through Christ. God’s life, His gracious gift, offered to all—Jew and Gentile, man and woman, young and old—is received by faith alone, not by effort, not by merit, not by works, not by anything we can add. The letter that went out from Jerusalem is a letter for us, too. It’s a call back to simplicity, to childlike trust. “He made no distinction between us and them, for He cleansed their hearts through faith. We believe that we are all saved the same way, by the undeserved grace of the Lord Jesus.” That’s the message. Don’t let your heart or religion complicate what Christ has made simple. Even the things we cling to as saviors—our rules, our observance—cannot save us. Lay them down. Receive the gift: the righteousness that comes by faith in the finished work of Christ. Put away the extra burdens, the additions, the anxiety of performance. Trust Him. Rest in His love. Walk in the gift that’s been given to you—full acceptance, full forgiveness, full belonging—in Christ alone. Live in the sufficiency of God’s life in you, today and every day. TODAY'S DEVOTION: Living in Grace in a Grace-Resistant World. The beautiful message brought by Barnabas and Paul is God's grace—for all people, Jew and Gentile alike. All are invited, all are included, into the triune life of God. What does that look like in real life? This grace isn’t earned by obedience to the law, personal piety, or virtue. It comes simply through Christ and what He has done. Jesus, God’s Messiah, has offered Himself on the cross as humanity’s answer—an answer to sin and death, an answer that gives us power to live this life today. The Holy Spirit fills us and empowers us. This message of grace has real, transformative power. It has the power to change your life, my life, every human life. But as powerful and good and gracious as this message is, it meets resistance. Other powers, other messages, seek to steer our lives. Often, we find ourselves colluding with those lesser powers, trying to survive in this broken world. But when we do, we survive as slaves—not as sons and daughters. True freedom comes only when we embrace grace, when we truly step into the life Christ offers. In Him, we're set free. Our eyes are opened—to see Him and to know who we are in Him. We’re given power, by His Spirit, to live this life now in Him. But don’t be fooled; the world resists grace. Paul and Barnabas remind the believers in Acts 14:22, “We must suffer many hardships to enter the Kingdom of God.” This is a grace-resistant world. But it’s only grace—the grace of Christ—that brings true life and transformation. It’s only Him. Are you facing resistance? Don’t be surprised. Draw courage from the fact that grace has come to you, has found you, has included you. Christ has offered His life for you. So rejoice now! Let this powerful message of Christ’s grace meet you, comfort you, and confront every resistant place in your heart, so He can transform you completely, by His love.
