The Little Green Witch, by Linda Blackmoor (Caledonia Forest, July 22, 2024) A little witch named Wren has a talent for herbal medicine, lives in the forest and conjures spells in her kitchen. Markless, by C.G. Malburi (Levine Querido, July 23, 2024) A dark fantasy for grades 7-12, featuring a society where a mark on your palm determines your magic and your worth in the society. Meesh the Bad Demon #2: The Secret of the Fang, by Michelle Lam (July 23, 2024) Meesh banded together with a fairy princess to save the underworld. Now an evil force wants to destroy all fox-kind. Can it be stopped? It’s a graphic novel. Millie Fleur’s Poison Garden, by Christy Mandin (Orchard Books, July 2, 2024) For ages preschool to grade 3. Millie comes to town and finds their gardens boring, so plants things like Fanged Fairymoss and Sneezing Stickyweed. The townsfolk call her garden poison. But some come around. The message is to be yourself, even if you’re weird. Mind Over Monsters, by Betsy Uhrig (Margaret McElderry, July 16, 2024) Monsters are invading Cranberry Bog Middle School! The Night Librarian, by Christopher Lincoln (Dial Books, July 30, 2024) Twins Page and Turner investigate a world they never knew existed, and it has something to do with their dad’s copy of Bram Stoker’s Dracula and characters missing from the pages of books. Prunella, by Beth Ferry (Simon & Schuster, July 16, 2024) Prunella is born with a purple thumb instead of a green one like her parents. She prefers corpse flowers to carnations and poison ivy to petunias. Her creepy garden scares all the other kids away, until one day a peculiar weed takes hold in her garden.. The Twisted Tower of Endless Torment #2 (The Horrible Bag Series), by Rob Renzetti (Penguin Workshop, July 23, 2024) Middle-grade horror series about a horrible bag and the spine chilling world hidden within. Welcome to Scare School (1) (Scare School Diaries), by Jarrett Lerner (Aladdin Publishing, July 16, 2024) A chapter book about Bash, a ghost who isn’t good at “ghost stuff” so he has to go to ghost school. Wolfgang in the Meadow, by Lenny Wen (Clarion Books, July 16, 2024) A ghost loves being in the meadow, hugging trees, stargazing etc, but also wants to become the Great Spirit of the Dark Castle and haunt it. Dark Books Coming Out in July 2024 part 2 of 2 Memories of the Lost, by Barbara O’Neal (Lake Union Publishing, July 30, 2024) Months after her mother dies, an artist sees a painting in a gallery that makes her lightheaded and dizzy. A handsome stranger comes over to help her. She later discovers a document in her mother’s papers that makes her realize her whole life has been a lie. She enters into a fugue state, finds a lead to the painting that started it all, and retreats to a remote seaside village to discover the source of her uncanny inspirations. Midnight Rooms, by Donyae Coles (Amistad, July 2, 2024) In 1840s England, the orphaned daughter of a white man and black woman is offered marriage by a wealthy stranger. She accepts the opportunity, and is whisked off to his surprisingly decaying family manor. The servants are skittish, and she’s never allowed to be outside unaccompanied. Her husband is kind, but she begins getting drowsy at dinners, having macabre nightmares and waking up hearing screams in the night. In the morning, she finds bruises on her body. The Moonlight Market, by Joanne Harris (Pegasus Books, July 2, 2024) I am a huge fan of Joanne Harris and I’m extremely excited for this book. It’s set in London, where young orphaned photographer Tom walks around the city photographing interesting things. He meets Vanessa. He followers her into a mysterious secret alternate world that’s hiding in plain sight on the streets and rooftops of London. It’s inhabited by strange colorful beings who are at war with each other – one nocturnal, and one in the light. My Mother Cursed My Name, by Anamely Salgado Reyes (Atria Books, July 30, 2024) Felicitas finally meets her estranged grandmother, who turns out to be cold, strict, and dead. The grandmother decides the only way she can cross over is to make sure her daughter is in a better place in life (work, husband, God, etc) and the only person who can hear the grandmother is Felicitas. Nicked, by M.T. Anderson (Knopf/Doubleday, July 23, 2024) Set in Italy in 1087, where a pox is sweeping through the city. A lowly monk is visited by Saint Nicholas in his dreams; and a charismatic treasure hunter seeks the monk’s help to steal a mysterious liquid from Saint Nicholas’ grave to cure the plague. Pink Slime, by Fernanda Trias (Scribner, July 2, 2024) Dystopian. An algae bloom has poisoned the air and a city is ravaged by plague. A mysterious corporation makes the only food people can safely eat, a disgusting pink paste made out of who-knows-what. A woman struggles to stay and survive in the city and keep her few tenuous relationships alive. State of Paradise, by Laura van der Berg (Farrar Strauss Giroux, July 9, 2024) In Florida, a mysterious illness arrived, made people sick, then disappeared. Weird things start happening, and a company called Electra starts handing out a mind bending virtual reality device. A ghostwriter for a thriller author notices weird things happening, and then her sister disappears after a violent rainstorm. Toward Eternity, by Anton Hur (HarperVia, July 9, 2024) In a near-future world, a new therapy is eradicating cancer by replacing the body’s cells completely with nanites. A man who has received nanotherapy vanishes into thin air, then comes back and is changed. Nano humans thrive and begin to replicate. Sci fi book. We Burn Daylight, by Bret Anthony Johnston (Random House, July 30, 2024) Star-crossed lovers fiction based on a true story at the Branch Davidian cult compound. The West Passage, by Jared Pachecek (Tordotcom, July 16, 2024) “When the Guardian of the West Passage died in her bed, the women of Grey Tower fed her to the crows and went back to their chores. No successor was named as Guardian, no one took up the fallen blade; the West Passage went unguarded. Now, snow blankets Grey in the height of summer, foretelling the coming of the Beast. The too-young Mother of Grey House and the Guardian's unnamed squire set out to save their people.” Wilderness Reform, by Matt Query and Harrison Query (Atria Books, July 2, 2024) When naughty thirteen year old Ben is sent to a remote wilderness reform program, he immediately senses an undercurrent of menace in the too-cheerful counselors. He and the other boys in his cabin team up to make it out alive. Surprisingly this isn’t a YA book. The X-Files: Perihelion, by Claudia Gray (Hyperion Avenue, July 30, 2024) Mulder and Scully are still reeling from the death of their son William. The FBI calls to ask their help finding a serial killer in Washington DC. The astrologer has a dark plan for her guests, and not all of them will leave the house alive. A “beach read” type book for those of us on the darker side of life. The Bang Bang Sisters, by Rio Yoeurs (William Morrow, July 16, 2024) Brea, Jessie and Flo are members of a cool rock band. But they’re also secretly vigilante assassins who drive their tour bus around the country dispensing justice to criminals who slipped the system. They’re tracking a serial killer known as “The Wren” and only one of the sisters will survive the next 48 hours in this action packed thriller. The Black Bird Oracle, by Deborah Harkness (Ballantine Books, July 16, 2024) The fifth book in the ‘All Souls” series featuring scholarly witch Diana Bishop and vampire Matthew de Clermont. A previously unknown aunt, Gwyneth, sends Diana a note, “It’s time to come home.” Diana and Matthew test their twins, Pip and Rebecca, for magic. Diana’s determined not to spellbind them. Briefly Very Beautiful, by Roz Dineen (The Overlook Press, July 2, 2024) Dystopian fiction where a mother flees the city with her three children during a destabilizing time of near societal collapse due to bad air, wildfires, floods, supply shortages and homegrown terror. The seemingly peaceful costal commune the family ends up at has a dark undercurrent. Bright Objects, by Ruby Todd (Simon & Schuster, July 16, 2024) A woman searching for her husband’s killer meets a mystic who believes that a recently discovered approaching comet has a divine message. Bury Your Gays, by Chuck Tingle (Tor Nightfire, July 9, 2024) An LGBTQ+ horror novel set in Hollywood, with the producer of a streaming series being pressured to kill off his two gay characters “for the algorithm.” And monsters from his horror movie days are stalking him and his friends! The Deading, by Nicholas Belardes (Erewhon, July 23, 2024) A hidden evil emerges from the ocean and infects the residents of a small fishing town. Sea snails wash ashore, infecting the residents, who die and then come back changed, as “Risers.” The town is isolated, and survivors have to find a way to get out of the isolated village. The Dissonance, by Shaun Hamill (Knopf/Doubleday, July 23, 2024) Three students of the eccentric Professor March have been trained in a system of magic called ‘The Dissonance,’ which works by harnessing negative emotions such as anger and pain. Twenty years later, they’re called back to their hometown to help after an idiot teenager’s séance summoned a murderous entity. Dracula (Arcturus Ornate Classics) by Bram Stoker (Sirius, July 2, 2024) A stunning edition of the classic vampire book. Beautiful for your bookshelves. Echoes of Memory, by Sarah Driscoll (Kensington, July 23, 2024) A woman with post-traumatic attack amnesia witnesses a murder in the alley and writes it all down carefully in her notebook so she can remember It the next day. But by the time the police arrive, there’s no body and no crime scene. The next day, she starts having flashbacks, and realizes the killer knows she’s a witness.. The Family Experiment, by John Marrs (Hanover Square Press, July 9, 2024) A dystopian thriller set in the future UK, where the world population is soaring, but in the UK nobody can afford to start a family. For families desperate to have a child, you can pay a subscription service for access to a virtual child via a VR headset. A reality show called “The Substitute” will follow ten couples as they raise their virtual children from “birth” to age 18 though an artificially condensed nine month period. They compete to keep their virtual child, or risk it all for the chance of a “real” baby to keep. Folk Tales of the Night: Stories for Campfires, Bedtime and Nocturnal Adventures, by Chris Salisbury (The History Press, July 2, 2024) A master storyteller from the UK rewrote and respun these folk tales of stars, sea, creatures and ghosts. They’re ideally shared around a campfire late at night. Ghost Stories: Chilling Tales of the Supernatural (Arcturus Gilded Classics) (Sirius, July 2, 2024) A stunningly beautiful gift edition of fifteen ghost stores by Edith Wharton, Edgar Allan Poe, Guy de Maupassant, etc. The God of the Woods, by Liz Moore (Riverhead Books, July 2, 2024) In this thriller set in 1975, a camp counselor discovers an empty bunk in the cabin. A girl, Barbara, has gone missing. She’s the daughter of the camp’s owners, but the disturbing part is, her older brother also went missing fourteen years before, never to be found. The Haunting of Hecate Cavendish, by Paula Braxton (St. Martin’s Press, July 23, 2024) Part 1 in a series. Set in England in 1881. Hecate Cavendish is about to become assistant librarian at Hereford Cathedral, which houses a chained library, and a map of the medieval world. Hecate sees ghosts, and some need her help, and some are threatening her very existence. Heads Will Roll, by Josh Winning (G.P. Putnam’s Sons, July 30, 2024) A troubled TV actress is sent to a summer camp for adult celebrities to take a break and leave their mistakes behind. There’s no phones allowed, so the campers have no way to call for help when one of them goes missing and others start to lose their heads (literally). Her Cruel Dahlias, by Candace Robinson (Crooked Heart Publishing, July 11, 2024) Cricket Wakefield was brutally murdered, but the dead don’t always stay dead. She’s awoken from the dead a year later by a necromancer, and she joins a carnival. More women turn up dead, and they all still have the same black dahlias on her body. She must find and stop her killer before she dies again. House of Shades, by Leeanne Dillsworth (Harper, July 16, 2024) A Black female doctor in 1830s Victorian London moves to a dark and foreboding house to try to cure its owner. But it’s not that simple, and she begins to unearth secrets. I Was a Teenage Slasher, by Stephen Graham Jones (Simon & Schuster, July 16, 2024) A teenager in a small town in Texas is cursed to kill for revenge. This is their autobiography. Look in the Mirror, by Catherine Steadman (Ballantine Books, July 30, 2024) Nina’s father dies, leaving her an estate in the British Virgin Islands she hadn’t known existed. It’s a modern high-tech house with glass and marble. She’s not sure how he got the money for it and why he kept it a secret. Meanwhile medical student Maria is a nanny for the super rich. She travels to a fancy house to start work, but her employers haven’t arrived yet. Their only message is “Don’t go in the basement.” Reminds me of Bluebeard? The Lost Story, by Meg Shaffer (Ballantine Books, July 16, 2024) In this Narnia-inspired fairy tale for grownups, two boys go missing in a West Virginia forest, only to reappear six months later with no explanation for where they’d been or what happened. Fifteen years later, one is an artist with no memory of what happened, and the other a missing persons investigator who does remember the magical realm they’d gone to.
