DattaQueensland's podcast
This is the place where we dissect and then discover the many ways ITD teachers all over this country are using their passion to create passionate students. We talk of measuring and manipulating a multitude of materials of design and divergent thought, of creation with our minds and with our hands. And most of all, we talk of growing great young people because of course that is what we do.

Bridge Building Podcast Episode 58: Datta Podcast: Conference Presenter Series – Leanne Cameron & Brett Dascombe
As I record this, we have about one month to go. It has been and will be my pleasure to speak with many of the presenters at this year’s conference and today I am really in a bit of a quandary because these two speakers are not only had my absolutely rapt attention, but they are both talking at the exact same time and that is also the same time I have promised to attend another presentation. At 1.55 on the last day of the conference there is just a smorgasbord of sensational speakers. And cheers to the committee for doing it because you would have to be a dope to want to leave after lunch like the really unattractive man that sits next to me in my staffroom tries to every year. First, we have Leanne Cameron from James Cook who is going to lead us through the beautiful things we can do with AI that will make our teaching so much better, enjoyable, easier, and exciting. Then we get to chat with Brett Dascombe who is already doing so many of the things we all or at least I dream of doing with my classes. And he tells me he will be bringing some of his virtual reality gear with him. Now these two talks are called How might general AI help you as a teacher and Geography complimenting Design through real world projects. And again, if you are silly enough to leave before the last session you are really missing out. I’ll be back next week with more of the sensational presenters that will be speaking this year at the Brisbane convention centre from the 13 th to the 14th of June. And remember the 2024 Teacher Excellence Awards are looking for nominations right now so look to your left and look to your right. Because you may be sitting right next to someone who deserves to be applauded. There are two awards the Design and Technology teacher of the year and the contribution to design and technology education award for that person who is not a teacher but still does great things for our teaching area.

Bridge Building Podcast Episode 57: Datta Podcast: Conference Presenter Series – Deirdre Dennys & Andrew Nicholls
Over the next several weeks it is my pleasure to speak with many of the presenters at this year’s conference and today, we will chat with 2 of these speakers. First is Deirdre Dennys who is leading the workshop Designing spaces for diversity, inclusion and participation: The Corner Cafe Project. Then we spend some time with Andrew Nicholls discussing the two presentation he will be leading on the second day. Design Drawing and then WHS in Design and technology learning spaces. What a great experience it was chatting to these sensational teachers. Deirdre positively glowed when she spoke about her year nine class. Yes I did say that, her year nine class. And Andrew also an architect gets right into the skill of drawing, it is palpable the passion he shows for his craft. We also talked about his presentation on Workplace Health and Safety and it has had me thinking since. You see I did give him a bit of a hard time about the topic which in truth says that I should be the person who most needs to be sitting in that room his, and I will be. I’ll be back next week with more of the sensational presenters that will be speaking this year at the Brisbane convention centre from the 13th to the 14th of June. Welcome back to week 1 term 2 2024 and today I have Rory Johanson who is leading this terms DATTA teach meet. So if you are in the position that I think most of us are changes are happening and those changes are all around the move from version 8.4 to version 9 of the technologies syllabus which is why we have called this teach meet to be held on May the 15th from 4.30 to 6.00pm Sharing good practice in 2024 looking at the ACARA version 9 syllabus for technologies. So how about we get Rory in to let us know all about it. And just because this is the last time I will be able to say it, this show was recorded at 2am because I got the time difference wrong, on West 123st which is right in the middle of Harlem and on the third floor of a real life brownstone building. And remember the 2024 Teacher Excellence Awards are looking for nominations right now so look to your left and look to your right. There are two awards the Design and Technology teacher of the year and the contribution to design and technology education award for that person who is not a teacher but still does great things for our teaching area. I can’t wait to see you on the 15th of May. Now if you would like to come along, just go to the DATTA website and to the drop down that says PD and that will take you to the Teach Meet page.

Bridge Building Podcast Episode 53: Datta Podcast: Designing people out of their homes.
My original thought for today was to talk to a young designer about his thoughts on how he see’s design working against the people of New York and a bit about a Google program that he has been accepted into that is training young people to work in that field. Francis Bazil is that young designer and he is quite simply a very impressive young man, so we did talk about what I was hoping to in the first fifteen minutes or so. Then things started on a bit of a tangent and then another which is why the show today is longer than normal. I don’t think it will come even close to showing you that I have found myself in a completely different universe these last weeks. So if you want to hear some of enormity of this place that is new York the last half may be a fun listen. And I am only going to say this a couple of more time but just to set the scene, this conversation was recorded in Andrew Carnegie’s mansion - now the museum – which is on fifth avenue overlooking central park. Thank you, Francis, it was great fun!

BRIDGE BUILDING PODCAST EPISODE 52: DATTA PODCAST: TEACHER OF THE YEAR AWARDS THE RACE BEGINS.
Today, I am speaking with a few experts in the field. What field I hear you ask. The field of knowing just what a great teacher is and who are the best people to talk about what to expect from a great teacher, well students of course. So today I am talking with one of the students from the hive program at the museum here in New York and Francis Bazil who is the hive mentor and a design student at FIT. Now there is a reason for this because in this episode we will be launching the race for the 2024 teacher excellence awards. And these two young experts are going to give us an insight into the type of person that deserves to be celebrated in this way. Because quite simply you need to take note as many of us are sitting right next to someone who deserves to be applauded. Now there are two awards the Design and Technology teacher of the year and the contribution to design and technology education award for that person who is not a teacher but still does great things for our teaching area. Just as an aside, Privacy rules over here are similar to home so the hive student is an avatar using empathetically designed name. Not to harp on the fact, but just to set the scene, this conversation was recorded in Andrew Carnegie’s mansion – now the museum – which is on fifth avenue overlooking central park. Thank you, Guys, your insights are brilliant!

Bridge Building Podcast Episode 51: Datta Podcast: The Hive @ Cooper Hewitt Design Museum
The show, this first term of 2024 will probably have a different feel to it because quite unexplainably I have been awarded the Queensland Cooper Hewitt fellowship and am spending 12 weeks working at the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum in New York. My aim is to create an introductory program to design teaching that will compliment the ITD teacher pathway program which is offering a pathway for teachers of other areas to come across to our side. Today, I’m speaking with Kirsten McNally and Nadia Kim who are two of the educators at Cooper Hewitt and primarily work with teenagers in different programs across the museum. One of their programs is called the hive, A year long program to which students from the New York area apply. From over 300 applications 12 are chosen or in this case they just couldn’t choose, and the number went to 13. Now one of the exciting things is that these kids are from low socio-economic families, so instead of just being accepted to the program they are interned, which means they get paid something like a part time job wage. Many would have had to choose part time work instead of the program if this wasn’t the case. Two passionate young ladies doing great work what a great conversation and just to set the scene, this was recorded in the library of Andrew Carnegie’s mansion - which is now the museum - overlooking central park. Thank you, Kirsten thank you Nadia, I had a great time!

BRIDGE BUILDING PODCAST EPISODE 50: DATTA PODCAST: ANDREW DEVOY – TIME TO FLY
Today, I’m speaking with Andrew Devoy. Andrew is the well, what we in the department call a head of department technology at the Marist college in Ashgrove and if you were to look back at the list of guests on this show you will see Andrew’s name as one of the very first. There is a reason I want to have him back and that comes down to a very simple question. When I as him what exciting things are happening at you school, his eyes light up, he starts to speak and I can guarantee you there are always several exciting things happening. Today we talk about the future of the opportunities for his students and a new subject, a certificate III in engineering that he is currently building and his passion to share the processes and skills needed to first draw, then produce, and then fly. Of course, if you are going to introduce a new subject it should include a licence to fly, shouldn’t it. I love talking to Andrew, he just makes me feel excited about this job we do, which is of course to help create sensational young people. Thank you Andy, I had a great time!

Bridge Building Podcast Episode 48: Datta Podcast: Jamie Lay - Joineded DATTA - Managing our Design Student Awards
Today, I’m speaking with Jamie Lay, Jamie is one of our young design and technology teachers who is stepping up and has joined DATTA and taken the responsibility for managing our design student awards which is what we are going to talk about today, but before we begin, I have just spent my weekend watching some very competitive voung people racing around a track in Nunda for 16 hours over night and finishing at 7.00 am. This competition is incredible to see. Kids working hard to be as good as they can be. Sadly I am not seeing it enough in the school setting so it is great to taslk today about another way your students can excel and get to compete with others from all over the state. And just putting it out there, there are a lot of private schools that get out there and show how great there students are. I think it is time we in the public sector shoud give it a go too. Thank you Jamie for the chat.

Today, I’m speaking with Sally Lawrence. Now, she is probably one of those people that would well and truly deserve one of our teacher excellence awards, that is if she was still in the classroom. That is our good fortune cause now she talks to teachers about the 8 ways of aboriginal learning which has an amazing alignment with our design practices. This year her focus is the bunya nut. You just won’t believe how this delicious food fits into the design and technologies curriculum. I reckon you have guessed that I am very impressed by this lady and that is because every time I see her speak I leave with a mind full of ideas. Thank you Sally, can’t wait!

My ears pricked up right from the start when I found out that they taught together an eternity ago in one of my old stomping grounds. That's Bundamba and Ipswich many years and many textbooks later, they are here to introduce a new design workbook that has taken a generation of experience to produce, probably perfect for those new to our area, the ones that are coming in from the Technologies Pathways. And to tell you the truth, many of us who are old and perhaps just a little bit stuck in our own ways, you'll be able to join their workshop on the first day of the conference from 11:00 am - 1:00 pm.

Peter Murphy is ex chair of the DFATTA Australia and now lecturer at several universities teaching design. But most importantly for us has started running a design masterclass for Queensland teachers. This is a program that has been running for a few years in Victoria and I think was the only thing that Victoria had to offer to D&T teachers. Covid made it on line and now we have access to it too. I have signed up for next term and am really looking forward to it. I hope you enjoy our chat, I sure did. Thanks Peter, for the chat! If you want to know more, this is a great place to start.

Bridge Building Podcast Episode 32: Datta Podcast: F1 In Schools With Rowan Cahill
Today, I am speaking with Rowan Cahill, now Rowan is the Regional Co-Ordinator for the F1 in schools north Queensland. Today we will talk about the program and some of the sensational benefits students gain from being a part of it. I hope you enjoy our chat, I sure did. Thanks Rowan, for the chat! About the Bridge Building Podcast “This is the place where we dissect and then discover the many ways ITD teachers all over this country are using their passion to create passionate students. We talk of measuring and manipulating a multitude of materials of design and divergent thought, of creation with our minds and with our hands. And most of all, we talk of growing great young people because of course that is what we do.” So what does that mean other than I like to show off my alliteration skills? Since coming back to teaching a few years ago the thing that strikes me most, and frankly scared me most is how lonely this job is. How little we know about what is happening in our subject area. The classroom next door, a class in the next school, let alone the next town are a mystery to me. I know there are teachers out there doing incredible things and this (the podcast) is a way for me to find out and be inspired. I would like to invite you along to listen and learn, to be inspired by some of the sensational teachers I speak to on the “Bridge Building Podcast – from technology to the trades” About the Podcast Host Stephen Anderson is a Design Technology, Trade Training and accidental Science teacher at a small high school 2 hours North West of Brisbane. Bridge Building Podcast Episode 31: Datta Podcast: Technologies (ITD) Teacher Pathway Program With Terri Quinn
Today, I am speaking with Terri Quinn, now Terri is the program manager for the Technologies Teacher Pathway Program. Today she will share a bit about the program and how she is taking steps to help fix the teacher shortage we have in this state Rosie. If you are a HOD looking for staff or a teacher wanting to move across into our field, this is a worthwhile listen. I hope you enjoy this chat, I sure did. Thanks Terri, for the chat!
