Refocused, Together: Magaly Sandoval and Leaning Into Your Curiosity
Magaly is a mechatronics engineer turned marketing manager who moved from Costa Rica to the United States seven years ago to become a skydiver. She achieved remarkable success, medaling at the world championships. However, the post-podium thrill faded, prompting Magaly to shift gears by changing careers and adopting new interests – the very ADHD way to live life! Magaly Sandoval's lifelong relationship with ADHD began in childhood when she was diagnosed at a young age. Despite excelling academically, her impulsivity, difficulty with social situations, and rapid task completion with missed instructions signaled her ADHD challenges. As she matured, Magaly recognized the profound impact of ADHD on various aspects of her life, including bouncing between hobbies and jobs, facing academic struggles, and navigating personal relationships. This realization served as a wake-up call, prompting her to embrace a slowed-down life focused on continuous learning, such as exploring languages and training her puppy. It took time but Magaly now sees the positive aspects of her ever-changing pursuits – every new endeavor brings a new set of skills which she figures out how to repurpose into other areas of life. Refocused, Together: Dee Lynn and the Comfort In Knowing
Dee Lynn is very new to this whole ‘having ADHD’ thing. Diagnosed just this last summer, the patient support specialist for ADHD Online knew what ADHD was before joining the telemedicine healthcare company. Her son was diagnosed in grade school. But it wasn’t until she was interacting with patients on a daily basis that she started to see the many different ways the disorder can show up for people. Especially for women. Like so many adults diagnosed later in life, Dee Lynn can now see plenty of signs of her ADHD when she looks back at her childhood. Raised in the 80s – a time when mental health was rarely discussed – the healthcare provider struggled with focus and attention and was afraid to ask for the additional help she knew she needed. Despite the whirlwind nature of her journey, Dee now feels a huge sense of relief and by working with her primary care doctor and her therapist, is figuring out the right treatment plan to help her move forward in life with the support she needs. Refocused, Together: Emmanuel Abua and Putting the Pieces Together
Emmanuel’s journey with ADHD has been going on for a long time. It started when he was 5. A teacher raised concerns and despite his family’s expectations that he would outgrow it – they took him off stimulant medications because of this – Emmanuel struggled with focus and building his own structure throughout school. He excelled on tests and quizzes but homework was a different story and even though he was seen as capable, the transition to college proved challenging. But it is also when he was evaluated for ADHD, marking this frustrating period as a turning point in understanding himself. Almost a decade later, Emmanuel discovered he was also autistic and he struggled with this news going through bouts of depression and denial. His search for answers led him to the support he needed to accept his dual diagnosis. Through humility and growth, Emmanuel became an advocate for Autism and ADHD awareness, actively engaging with organizations like ADDA and addressing mental health stigmas within the African-American community. Today, he pursues the work he's passionate about as a freelance writer, speaker, and voiceover artist and has been contributing his talents in the form of short audio stories for NeuroClassic's SoundCloud channel, sharing his unique perspective to help foster understanding. Listen in to hear Emmanuel share more about his journey with ADHD and Autism, about the importance of connection for the neurodiverse community, and how the progress that’s been made in the neurodivergent community over the last decade is inspiring him to look forward to the future. Refocused, Together: Jen Verhagen and Realizing Your Potential
Jen Verhagen was diagnosed with ADHD five years ago when she was 28, after struggling with insomnia for years. The diagnosis brought so much clarity for the talent acquisition specialist. Like many women diagnosed later in life, Jen excelled in K-12 but found the transition to college difficult, her inability to focus and create her own structure becoming too much for her to overcome. Unaware of what was holding her back – her undiagnosed ADHD – Jen thought she was simply dumb. Life post-diagnosis has been a season of growth for the 33 year-old Michigan native. After working up the courage to ask for accommodations at a new job, Jen was faced with the fact that there are still people out there unwilling to acknowledge the realities of living with ADHD. Her manager’s dismissal of her needs pushed Jen into a dark place and ultimately led to her leaving the company. The good news is, Jen landed on her feet in a place where she feels supported and encouraged to be herself and to shine as a woman with ADHD. Listen in to hear more from Jen about her journey with ADHD, why it’s important for people to recognize that ADHDers face an uphill climb every single day and what she hopes can be done to help the world understand a lifelong condition that is anything but one-size-fits-all. Diagnosed with depression and anxiety at 15, she often felt different and while she underwent treatment for her mental health, she still felt like something wasn’t quite right.
