Please welcome to our show award-winning filmmaker, Ondi Timoner, who lost her home in Altadena when the Eaton fire tore through neighborhoods there last January, killing 19 people and leaving thousands of others without a home.This is a tight-knit, multi-generational community where kids played safely in the streets, residents organized block parties, and neighbors would meet at nearby coffee shops. But that's all gone now, up in flames in just one night, leaving residents to mourn not just homes, but their community, wondering if they'll ever be able to rebuild, siting little help from government officials and most insurance companies. So Ondi did what she does best, and produced the documentary, "All The Walls Came Down," a magnificent portrayal of the struggle, sadness, and reality of those who lost so much, including those residents who tragically lost family members. This is a stunning portrayal of a community left to fend for themselves, hanging on to hope while still looking for answers. Ondi graduated cum laude from Yale and is the founder of Interloper Films. In fact, two of her films were acquired by New York's Museum of Modern Art for its permanent collection. We will talk with Ondi about her outstanding career in the arts and what fuels her as a filmmaker, particularly this latest film, where she's part of the action. When famed tenor and songwriter Pasquale Esposito was growing up in Naples, Italy, the music of Enrico Caruso would play throughout his house, inspiring him to sing at the local church in town. His dream was to come to America, to study and eventually perform. And that's exactly what he did. Fast forward twenty-five years, and Pasquale is now performing internationally to critical acclaim, and on Dec. 10, he'll perform along side world-renowned conductor Maestro Carlo Ponti on the Broad Stage in Santa Monica, California, presenting a magical Holiday concert of American and Italian traditions through spirited carols and emotional Neapolitan melodies. And I'm honored to speak with both gentlemen today on my show. I've known Carlo for some time now, and not only am I a huge fan of his work, but I admire his incredible talent and creative style. I'm also honored to call him a friend. Most people know he's the eldest son of the beautiful and talented Ms. Sophia Loren and filmmaker Carlo Ponti, and one can only imagine life growing up among such talent. But not only did Carlo inherit his parents gift of performance, he's lived his life in service of the arts, having founded the Los Angeles Virtuosi Orchestra, which raises awareness and funds for music education in the Los Angeles area. welcome to our show an extraordinary woman, filmmaker, and human rights activist, Jihan K, whose documentary, "My Father and Qaddafi," unravels the disappearance of her dad, Mansur Rashid Kikhia, a peaceful opposition leader to Muammar Qaddafi who vanished when she was just six-years-old. The film seeks to piece together her mother’s 19-year search to find her husband. Without any memory of her father, Jihan tries to reconnect with him and reconcile with her Libyan identity, taking on a reflective journey as she tries to piece together the memory of a man she barely remembers. Mansur Rashid Kikhia served as Libya's foreign minister, ambassador to the United Nations, and was a human rights lawyer. For many, he was a rising star who could have been the next leader of Libya. After serving under Qaddafi, he defected from the government and became an opposition leader. In 1993, he disappeared from his hotel in Egypt, never to be seen again. Jihan’s mother, Baha Al Omary, a strong-willed Syrian-American artist, began searching for him, launching the family into an international political maze. Nineteen hears later, his body was found in a freezer near Qaddafi’s palace. Through encounters with family, her father’s colleagues, and historical archives, Jihan’s search for truth evolves into a deeper curiosity, and we'll talk about that. David Goldblum's short film, "Big Rock Burning," is creating a lot of good heat for the pointed questions it's raising since the devastating fires that charred thousands of properties in Malibu and the Palisades (not to mention Altadena), and he joins our program LIVE to talk about his film and the harrowing experiences so many have had since leaving their homes on January 7th, returning to the ashes of a life that so many are struggling to put back together. The film depicts the stories of 49 Malibu residents impacted by the fires, and chronicles the resilient spirit of the residents of Big Rock, and their intent to rebuild. But little has happened in the months that have followed, and while people are still grieving, they want action and accountability. David says residents have been left to fend for themselves to sort through government red-tape and insurance nightmares, and they're growing weary. Their stories have attracted some celeb residents as well, such as Mark Hamill and Ricki Lake, who talks about losing her home and the emotional impact it's had on her and her friends and neighbors. Malibu is a multi-generational community and so many have lived in their homes since childhood. And while it's a peaceful community, it's not without its challenges, too, and the fire dangers are one of them. As a kid growing up in an Italian-American neighborhood in Brooklyn, James Tumminia knew two things: he loved all things Italian, and he wanted to be an actor. And he's living both. I first met James at an event at the Italian Cultural Institute in Los Angeles, and noticed he seemed to be at every Italian gathering throughout the city - and there's many. So I thought it appropriate to invite him to talk about all things Italian, in addition to his life and career, as part of Italian-American Heritage Month. James studied Italian at Georgetown, which led him to living, studying, and working in Florence. He played Mario in "Two Scoops of Italy" a Hallmark film, and has been involved on the producer side of many projects, including, "Love, Guilda," "1st Strike," and many more. James said he feels the guidance of his ancestral grandparents, all four born in Italy, and he became an Italian citizen in 2009. He's currently working on a project he's super excited about, "PER CHI," a short doc he's producing. We'll be talking about that. Want to live longer? It's all about our food. In fact, "we are what we eat" isn't just a phrase about weight. Maura Fanti, researcher at USC's longevity institute, has been connecting the benefits of calculated fasting and metabolism, inflammation, and a healthier life, and she says to live longer, we need to give our digestive system a break. Please welcome Maura to our show, who joins us to discuss how fasting doesn't just help shed pounds, it can increase our life span, too. She talks about the benefits to our liver, which we know filters out toxins in our systems, and she wants people to be educated to make healthy decisions because our lives literally depend on it. Maura is from Italy and studied at the University of Calgary before joining USC, and she points to how the American diet is so radically different from the Italian diet, and how incorporating proper fasting with certain foods can drastically reduce inflammation, which we all know is the culprit to declining health and weight gain. And we don't have to fast all day. Maura gives us practical tips on the best way to achieve a healthy fast without feeling famished. I met Maura at an event sponsored by @ItalyInLA and @IICLosAngeles, and we spent some time discussing how to get people to make healthy, which is often difficult, but perhaps approaching from a clinical perspective might be more beneficial. Italians are known for their vibrant culture worldwide, and when I hear the term, "it takes a village," I think of Vicky Colarossi Carabini, a woman who serves as her own village promoting Italian culture throughout Southern California. Please give a warm welcome to Vicky as one of our featured guests for Italian Heritage Month. Since 2007, Vicky Carabini has served as Ambassador to San Juan Capistrano’s Sister City, Capestrano, Italy. She is Chair of the Italian Studies Council and Board Member of the Ferrucci Institute at Chapman University, which has one of the most active Italian Studies programs in the country. Vicky is also Regional VP for the National Italian American Foundation, aka NIAF, which promotes Italian heritage at its highest level through programs based out of D.C., and she's working hard to ensure California has a large presence within the organization. Vicky is also forever hosting fundraisers, Italian film nights, parades and food drives to keep the Italian community actively involved in Orange County where she lives. And if you're looking for something to do, check out her newsletter that keeps So Cal peeps informed on all things Italian. Why does this all matter? Because to keep our culture, or any culture alive and active within a community, it requires committed involvement, and that's Vicky. In 2003, Vicky and her husband, Michael, purchased a farmhouse in southern Tuscany and have been producing olive oil ever since. She and her family have since attained Italian citizenship and are now residents of Sarteano, where the farmhouse is located. In recognition of her work in 2020, Silvia Chiave, then Consul General of Italy in Los Angeles, knighted Vicky Cavaliere dell’Ordine della Stella d’Italia (Knight of the Order of the Star of Italy) on behalf of Italian President Sergio Mattarella. This honor is one of Italy’s highest recognitions for Italians abroad and is awarded to those who distinguish themselves through philanthropy, cultural advocacy, research, and strengthening international ties. Bravo, Vicky! The world is such a complicated place, and the more we give and get involved in our communities, the better place it will be. The political divide appears to be growing larger in this country, and the so-called American Dream seems to be slipping away from so many, particularly among young people. And while America has always had a conflicted history, the goal has been to bridge cultures and forge a united front of prosperity. But is this the case? Particularly among students in college and high school years, the lines are blurry and the conflict is rising. Please welcome to our show filmmakers Ted and Courtney Balaker, whose film, "The Coddling of the American Mind," is encouraging discussion from left to right and in between. The film is base on the book with the same title, and talks about the disillusionment many young people feel - particularly on college campuses - and how the rhetoric and constant battles are creating a serious mental health crisis in our society. The documentary-style film follows the stories of students from various ethnicities and backgrounds who arrive with wide-eyed anticipation and eventually become despondent and confused. Award-winning journalist and news anchor Elex Michaelson dreamed of working in the news business since he was a kid. Well, that dream became a reality due to his incredible work ethic, talent, determination, and undoubtedly good-natured personality. But don't let that nice-guy persona fool you. Elex is tough. He can interview CA Governor Gavin Newsom in the morning and President Donald Trump in afternoon, and both will leave feeling like they got a fair interview, largely in part because they did. Elex's skill is that he knows how to ask a pointed question without picking a side, giving his guest the room to answer. And I'm honored to welcome one of the best newscasters in the business and my friend, Elex Michaelson, to our show today. Elex has been the anchor of various nightly newscasts at @FoxLA and host of #TheIssueIs, a smart political round up of the local, state, and national issues of the week. The show's success is largely due to Elex and his A-list Rolodex, including former CA governor Arnold Schwarzenegger (Arnold actually took Elex to the gym to give him work-out tips since), senators, legendary attorneys (Gloria Allred was on Elex's show with my husband, @JohnKobyltRadio, and he got the two to dance on LIVE TV). Randy is also the first woman ever to announce the Oscars. Her resume is as long as the state of California, including when she made history as the half-time announcer for Super Bowl 44, introducing The WHO. She's been the voice of ABC's Nightline, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Kennedy Center Honors, Democratic Nomination, and more. Please give a warm welcome to Randy Thomas, who joins our show today to talk about her legendary career and sometimes complicated life. Randy grew up listening to NY radio as a kid, and that's exactly where she started her career, on the radio. In particular, parents who aren't letting go and continuing to make decisions for their adult kids that they should make for themselves. Then there's a second dynamic, adult children who are not just separating in a healthy way, but are disconnecting, leaving some parents confused and looking for answers. Please welcome to our show Kendall L. Williams, author of "Reclaiming Your Identity," and host of the Mum's True Tea Podcast. Her focus: helping moms reclaim who they were before kids, and finding the balance between being a guiding parent or an overbearing one. Some children have chosen to completely cut off communication, leaving with many parents in a panic, and she talks about how to handle this, too. In other words, parents need to let go. Kendall said there's a variety of reasons for this recent dynamic, including social media influence and a culture of disrespect that's been tolerated. Sometimes, there are films that stay with us, and A LITTLE FELLOW: The Legacy of A.P. Giannini, directed by Davide Fiore, is one of those films, and I'm pleased to present Davide today on our #LittleItalyPodcast. Back in the day, banks were primarily for the wealthy, and the poor and working class immigrants often stashed their savings under a mattress. But at the turn of the 20th century, A.P. Giannini revolutionized the industry with his small bank in San Francisco. A first-generation Italian-American, his goal was to serve “the little fellow” and breed prosperity within his immigrant community. By building trust and giving loans on a simple handshake, he created one of the largest banks in the country – Bank of America. A LITTLE FELLOW tells his story, and it's remarkable. In addition, A.P. Giannini was also one of the first investors in Hollywood, the Golden Gate Bridge, and Hewlett-Packard. His forward-thinking helped the country through two World Wars and the Great Depression. Davide is a native of Torino, Italy, and has made a name for himself directing and editing in the Italian fashion and advertising industry. He eventually started filming music videos, working along side major Italian labels, singers, and DJ's, when he embarked on his first documentary, titled JUST US, about two Italian DJ's. That documentary gained worldwide distribution, and Davide went on to work in Germany, and London. His subsequent photo exhibition, I’VE ALREADY SEEN IT SOMEWHERE, showcased New York movie locations, and has been hosted in Torino, Rome, and Miami, and published by Vogue Italia. His latest film, A LITTLE FELLOW, is blowing up for its incredible vision and artistic expression. I simply loved it, and had no idea about the story of A.P. Giannini. Since Italians first came to this region, they have been agriculturalists, pioneers, outlaws and dreamers, and have brought with them tremendous culture, science, culinary expertise, and vibrancy to a variety of neighborhoods in Los Angeles, from the ports in Long Beach and San Pedro up to the northern most sections of Los Angeles. Marianna's comprehensive book talks about the trailblazers, winemakers, the original Italian Hall and Little Italy, Hollywood, and of course the secret History that she has uncovered. It wasn't easy being the first Italians to grace the soil here, but hard work, family, and perseverance carried them through. The Assistance League has improved the lives of more than 22,000 homeless, foster, and impoverished children in Los Angeles, and the need keeps growing, particularly in the areas of education, arts programs, and critical need services. The Assistance League has a variety if focused programs, including scholarships, the foster children's resource center, preschool learning center, theater for children, and operation school bell.
