info_outline The Vanishing House 09/16/2019
The Vanishing House I’m delighted to announce the release of The Vanishing House, a two-hour collection of dark ambient and experimental offerings. This release marks a long-overdue revival of a beloved annual ritual: the Halloween mixtape. I’ve been too busy with these last few years to produce a mixtape as well, but this year I made sure to find the time. My first three Halloween mixtapes were (2007), a tribute to early goth; (2009), a love letter to asylum horror; and (2010), dedicated to religious horror and possessions. The theme this time around is ghosts and haunted houses. I’ve discovered a great deal of fantastic new dark ambient and experimental music since my last Halloween mixtape, and in that time I’ve also found that I’ve developed a strong taste for , an ethereal offshoot of dark ambient. This dovetails wonderfully with the haunted house theme. I’ve also found that I’m no longer interested in layering multiple songs and movie samples together, those complex mash-ups that dominated my earlier mixes. While I did rely on a single movie sample for the intro track, this time around I decided to let each song speak for itself, in its own context. This allows for a chillier, sparser landscape, perfect for headphone listening or listening in a quiet room. (Exceptions to this rule are tracks with “(overlay)” in their titles, in which I layered together a handful of songs from the same album.) Finally, I included a few orchestral and chamber music pieces from my library that lent themselves nicely to the theme, giving the mix a lovely organic quality notably lacking from previous collections. Haunted house movies employ surprisingly dynamic audio landscapes, swaying wildly from whispers and creaks to distorted spells of screaming and wailing. I’ve tried to capture both ends of this spectrum in The Vanishing House, as well as cover a fair amount of ground in between. For example the opening track, a ghost’s pensive soliloquy, dissolves among the mournful, distant cries of Nurse With Wound’s The Grave and Beautiful Name of Sadness. Then Akt. One from the , Nurse’s quietly devastating collaboration with , continues the softer theme: scratched records, a muted harp, singing heard from another room. But soon we enter Araphel’s terrifying screamer Evocation of the Wicked, plucked from one of the most . Then we’re back to more scratchy old records, distant atmospherics, and pensive orchestral jitters, the mix falling almost completely silent for moments at a time. And then on to more confrontational pieces, and so on. Back and forth. It’s every DJ’s prerogative to slip a few of his own tracks into his mixtapes, and this DJ is no exception. It’s obvious now that I’ve been producing ghost ambient music this whole time without fully realizing it, so it felt natural to toss in a few songs of my own (more of which are available ). I’m also delighted to feature three tracks by , an indie outfit fronted by a freakishly interesting man with whom I’ve been lucky enough to cross paths a few times. And of course it wouldn’t be a Halloween mixtape without Nurse With Wound and Andrew Liles, probably my favorite collaborative duo ever. This is the longest mixtape I’ve ever done, clocking in at almost 135 minutes. (Nine years of collecting new music has a way of catching up with you!) The final mix fell together much faster than I had anticipated, and I’m still surprised at how well these songs compliment and challenge each other. I couldn’t be happier with the final result. I hope you enjoy it! Happy Halloween 2019! 🎃 Jason Herrboldt, Minneapolis
info_outline Pray For Death 09/02/2019
Pray For Death For my next haunted mixtape, I present a sonic swarm of blood-choked screams, growling ambient hellscapes, serial killers, the possessed, and the insane. Here to guide you through this drafty tour of the netherworld is my alter ego, Father Morning. He will hold your hand as you penetrate the inner circles of Hell, uncover the hidden blasphemies of Sodom, and maybe check out the basement of a local leather bar. (Don’t worry about it.) As before, I’m relying on the unwitting generosity of a diverse group of musicians and audio engineers for inspiration. Father Morning drew from several putrid wells of creativity to unearth his sonic crash-ups of filth, and he would simply lash himself into oblivion if he thought for one second that these artists might go unthanked. (See regards and apologies below.) Both songs credited to Jason Herrboldt are available as stand-alone tracks on my 2010 single . Downloads are free. But no more delays, no more teasing. Bend over, grab your rosary beads, and prepare yourself for the ultimate in sonic spiritual punishment. The dungeon door is open, and Father Morning will see you now. Track list: Father Morning - Your Friend The Priest (00:00) Robert Cobert & David Selby - Shadows Of The Night (Quentin's Theme) (06:35) Father Morning - The Living (08:39) Father Morning - The Third Commercial (11:03) Father Morning - The Dead (14:11) Jason Herrboldt - Small Talk (22:17) Father Morning - Howdy Captain (29:10) Father Morning - Simon Slays (35:37) Tony Wakeford & Steven Stapleton - Walk The White Ghost (40:43) Father Morning - The Texas Chainsaw Mascara (45:03) Father Morning - Unforgiven (Seventeen Of Them) (47:56) Battery Cage - Fatal Skull Penetration (51:34) Jason Herrboldt - Small Talk (Whisper Mix) (54:00) Raz Mesinai vs Aymrev Erkroz Prevre - String Quartet For Four Collapsing Turntables (59:05) Father Morning - Goats In The Belfry (64:13) - - - Huge thanks to the following musicians and filmmakers for their unwitting help. These artists appeared on the mix in one form or another (no contribution is too small), but in the interest of space they were not all acknowledged on the track list. Sounds and atmospherics by the artists below were used in audio collage crash-ups under my project pseudonym Father Morning. This mixtape wouldn't even be one tenth as cool without these stellar (and again, completely unwitting) contributions. A very special thanks to the sound crew that worked on (1990), a criminally underrated movie from which I borrowed heavily—both sonically and thematically—for this project. info_outline You've Been Sick 08/23/2019
You've Been Sick This mixtape is my love letter to psychological horror; to every abandoned asylum, possessed surgeon, and blood-splattered nurse to haunt the big screen. For this journey to insanity, I took inspiration from modern psychological horror, dada, and early industrial / experimental music. I really tried to turn the sick factor up to eleven. If you aren’t inspired to vomit at least once, then I’ve failed on all counts. (Some of these songs are available in standalone version for free on .) Freezer Burn Maybe it's the time of year. Something about the icy air makes me crave cold, funky, robotic drum and bass. This winter is no exception. Last week the temperatures dropped well below zero, and before I knew it I had dropped like thirty bucks at the iTunes Store on some of the chilliest tracks around. I mixed them all together, and now I make it available for you. The robotic vocals sprinkled throughout the mix are generated with a program called Speak To Me. I also used audio from the classic arcade games Galaga, Space Invaders, Q*Bert, and Defender. The Birth Of Liquid (Faze Two) Welcome to part two of Hardcore Math User’s liquid funk history lesson! Picking up where Faze One left off, Faze Two ups the tempo and brings a stronger funk aesthetic to the table while maintaining that shimmering watery vibe perfected by late 90s melodic drum and bass. looms large, and needs no introduction here. We’ve got more Jonny L on deck, a pair of joints by E-Z Rollers, and it wouldn’t be a 90s melodic D&B party without a few gems from the mighty Good Looking empire. Kicking off the mix is probably my favorite vocal drum & bass tune of the decade, sporting a vocoder and more live instruments than you can shake a microphone at, Adam F’s futuristic masterpiece Music In My Mind. Sure, it went by different monikers throughout the decade: jungle jazz, atmospheric, drum & space. info_outline '95 Jungle Sound Murderah 04/20/2019
'95 Jungle Sound Murderah Back once again for another old school collection. This time we’re going to the back of the crate for some heavyweight classics that will absolutely melt your face. Spanning the crucial '92 – '95 era, we let drum and bass legends Roni Size, Goldie, Bay B Kane, Andy C, and Aphrodite take us on the ultimate jungle safari back to where it all began. These are some of the songs that got me seriously hooked on the jungle / drum & bass scene when I first got my start as a producer in the early 90’s. I remember completely feeling the intelligent vibe as I listened to Goldie’s Jah, Rogue Unit’s Nocturnal, and EZ Roller’s Rolled Into One. The combination of complex rhythms, mathematical symmetry and lush keyboard sounds absolutely floored me. I'll never forget the first time I listened to my then brand new vinyl copy of Boogie Times Tribe's — absolutely changed my life. Later on, my CD copies of Goldie's and D'Cruze's were worth more to me than my car. My love for jungle / drum and bass has burned bright ever since. This mixtape is a tribute to these masters of the dark arts. Having said all that, I can't let this mix go out without a nod to what I consider to be the original jungle track – the one that came before all the others, the one that I never listened to without a pot haze around my head: The 1991 Version Galore mix of Meat Beat Manifesto's . This track truly lit the spark in a gasoline-filled warehouse, and has got to be my favorite jungle / drum & bass track of all time. This is the third recent mixtape of mine to include samples of this monster tune. All of the songs have been sped up to 170 bpm to give the mix a modern feel, but each song’s original pitch has been preserved to maintain the old school vibe. Many snippets go uncredited, such as Van Kleef's Life Began Changing, Randall & Andy C's Sound Control, and A Guy Called Gerald's 28 Gun Bad Boy. There are some fresh bootleg remixes (456, Dancer), and one is an unreleased song of mine from 1994, when I was just learning my jungle chops (Congo Menace). info_outline Artificial Skies 04/01/2019
Artificial Skies (Be sure to check out Artificial Skies Vol 2 !) So far the Class of ‘93 mixtape series has payed homage to those early rave genres we all know and love: hardcore breakbeat, techno, trance, jungle, acid. This time the focus shifts to ambient, a genre that enjoyed a brief spotlight in the early 90s, both in and out of the rave scene, and easily deserves a mixtape of its own. In 1990 Art of Noise released an to critical acclaim, and within a few years artists like Future Sound of London, The Orb, and Aphex Twin were mentioned in the same breath as Brian Eno and Tangerine Dream. Raves had chill rooms and DJs found themselves spinning records from labels as unlikely as and . Artificial Skies picks up where Lords of Ecstasy left off, leaving the listener floating in a cloud of analog soundscapes. The idea was to keep the chill vibe going, while moving in a decidedly sci-fi direction. The use of the word “artificial” was deliberate: with a few exceptions, the songs on this mixtape were made on synthesizers. There’s a great deal of very fine acoustic ambient music out there, but the point of this mix was to showcase music that makes no apologies for its use of technology. One exception to this rule is the song Nike from the phenomenal 1989 album by Pauline Oliveros, Stuart Dempster & Panaiotis, an album that was recorded, of all places, inside an at an old military fort. Even though it’s an acoustic song, I included it in this mix for a number of reasons, including its staggering beauty, but mostly for the fact that it was recorded under an actual artificial sky. (That reverb is real.) Read on the the Discogs page when you get a chance. It’s a fascinating story. The Dan Harpole Cistern at Fort Worden State Park This mixtape features music that came out in the early 90s, as of course is tradition, but the majority of songs actually came out decades before, some as early as the 50s (e.g. ). No matter the era, all songs share a set of aesthetic sensibilities that make ambient such a compelling genre. The result is equal parts relaxing, expansive, at times a bit unsettling, but always interesting. I hope you enjoy it! info_outline Hyper On Hardcore Breakbeat 03/16/2019
Hyper On Hardcore Breakbeat If you've ever loved jungle, drum and bass, or happy hardcore, you've loved hardcore breakbeat. Hardcore is the solid trunk of early '90s electronica that spawned literally dozens of sub-genres. Hardcore itself is a branch of earlier revolutions in dance music, fusing together strands of house, breakbeat, acid, reggae and hip-hop turned up to 45. The tempos eventually chased each other up into the 150 bmp range, at which point jungle nabbed the weed, warbly bass lines, and MCs to form drum and bass, happy hardcore stole away with the 4/4 beats and screaming piano divas, and gabber kept the distortion petals for a notorious affair with techno. But once upon a time they were all one. Funky breaks, chimpmunked vocals, scratched rap samples, rasta MCs, and heavenly synth stabs all lived together in glorious unity. This mixtape is dedicated to the memory of that unity, and to all the DJs and producers who made it happen.
