Driving home from the cinema reviews
In which I use the drive home from the cinema to share some short, (hopefully) snappy thoughts on what I've just seen.
info_outline Episode 60 - THE FAREWELL and ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD 10/21/2019
Episode 60 - THE FAREWELL and ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD Two films. One of em I really liked. One of em I didn't.
info_outline Episode 57 - SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME 07/29/2019
Episode 57 - SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME I can't recall the last Marvel film I had as little anticipation for as this one. I was expecting loads of multiverse (which I don't love) and we all have a little Spidey fatigue. But this was really delightful and operated at a different scale to most Marvel films.
info_outline Episode 55 - JOHN WICK 3 06/02/2019
Episode 55 - JOHN WICK 3 My recent burst of energy in posting long since recorded episodes continues unabated. JOHN WICK 3 is rad. Will go close to being the best action film of the year and is also the weakest in the franchise. Interesting to consider the way they film stretches the Wick mythology and if it works.
info_outline Episode 54 - AVENGERS ENDGAME 05/30/2019
Episode 54 - AVENGERS ENDGAME I've gotten into this bad habit of recording episodes and never taking the 10 minutes it takes me to post them. So here's a review of AVENGERS ENDGAME I recorded maybe a week after it came out. The biggest behemoth of the year. It's an interesting film to ponder in terms of what it's attempting to do (or at least wrap up). But it's perhaps not all that interesting a film. Although I quite liked it, reflecting it's the flaws that stick out to me more than the triumphs, at least on first viewing.
info_outline Episode 48 - Recent release roundup 01/22/2019
Episode 48 - Recent release roundup This episode is a little different. I run through a bunch of recent(ish) releases that I haven't chatted about before. The films and time-stamps are: 1.15 - CAN YOU EVER FORGIVE ME 4.05 - BUMBLEBEE 8.19 - RALPH BREAKS THE INTERNET 11.15 THE FAVOURITE 14.35 - AQUAMAN 19.55 - CREED 2 22.45 - INTO THE SPIDERVERSE Ratings System: Longneck of Melbourne Bitter - an excellent film. Sublimely entertaining, meaningful or both. Pint of Kilkenny - a very good, highly recommended film. Stubby of Reschs - a good film and worth your time. Schooner of Carlton Draught - Not great aye. But perhaps an interesting idea or two. Schooner of Tooheys New - Shithouse
info_outline Episode 45 - Random double bill: OCEAN'S 8 & THE SECOND 07/31/2018
Episode 45 - Random double bill: OCEAN'S 8 & THE SECOND Here I tackle a random double feature. The all-star heist team up OCEAN'S EIGHT continues on strong, still playing in cinemas; whilst THE SECOND is Australian streaning service Stan's first original feature.
info_outline Episode 42 - MARY SHELLEY 07/10/2018
Episode 42 - MARY SHELLEY I take a look at the latest from WADJDA director Haifaa Al-Mansour. A literary romance that clunks when it focuses on the romance, but utterly shines on the literary front. Apologies for the awkward part here where I accidentially pause the recording and then um and ahhh for a while about if it's working or not. This podcast remains staunchly edit-free (even when it's to the detriment of quality).
info_outline Episode 38 - Aussie genre film double bill 05/14/2018
Episode 38 - Aussie genre film double bill Something a little different this time around. For starters I'm sitting at home drinking whisky rather than driving. Secondly I take a look at two local genre films - TRENCH am excellent comedy-noir, and BLUE WORLD ORDER an enjoyable sci-fi romp.
