Progeny The people who leave your leadership are not the end of your story — they are the continuation of it. In this episode of Now Go Lead, Brandon Pinkerton explores the leadership principle of progeny: the idea that the most enduring measure of your influence is not how long people stay, but how far they carry what you gave them. This is leadership development at its deepest level. Brandon opens with a scene many leaders know well — sitting with the quiet ache of watching people walk out the door. He describes scrolling through the career profiles of people who once worked under his direct influence, tracing the varied and distant paths they have taken since leaving his company. Where he once felt loss, he began to feel something more powerful: the recognition that each of those paths carried a thread of what they had learned, developed, and grown into under his leadership. The image of a deck on a spring morning becomes the backdrop for a fundamental shift in perspective. The leadership insight is straightforward and demanding at the same time. You cannot control how long someone chooses to stay with you. Trying to do so makes life miserable for everyone. What you can do — what you are responsible for — is take seriously the work of developing people while they are with you. When you instill values and vision deeply enough, those things travel with a person wherever they go. The vision extends beyond your direct reach. That is what Brandon calls true multiplication. The episode closes with the concept that gives it its title. When the progeny of your leadership carries your vision to places you have never been and to people you will never meet, you have done the most important work a leader can do. Your legacy is not measured by retention — it is measured by what takes root in the people who once sat across from you. KEY TAKEAWAYS • You cannot control how long someone will stay under your leadership — attempting to do so only causes damage to yourself and those around you. • Your true measure as a leader is not retention — it is the values and vision you instill in people before they go. • The most powerful form of multiplication is not growing your own team, but seeing your influence continue through the paths of those who have moved on. • Leaders who develop others with intentionality will one day see their vision living in places they have never been and among people they will never know. • Departure is not failure. In most cases, it is the beginning of someone carrying your work further than you ever could. CLOSING REFLECTION Take five minutes and think about this. Where have I gotten sidetracked or angry over people leaving my sphere of influence? What is my plan to intentionally develop others so that my vision lives beyond my reach? FINAL THOUGHT The leaders who leave the deepest marks are not the ones who held people the longest — they are the ones who sent people forward with something worth carrying. Your vision does not have to end where your influence stops. It's time to now go lead. /episode/index/show/e5273498-a381-49b4-bf95-392af7d8a33a/id/41958225

The Troglodyte 07/21/2026

The Troglodyte Failure leaves a mark. The scars from your worst leadership moments do not disappear once the situation is resolved. They stay with you as a constant reminder, and your brain, doing exactly what it is designed to do, will work hard to make sure you never find yourself in the same painful place again. That protective instinct is a reasonable response to trauma. It is also one of the most dangerous forces a leader can allow to go unchecked. This episode of Now Go Lead asks a direct question: what are you hiding from? Brandon Pinkerton draws on the story of Luke Skywalker in the Star Wars sequel trilogy to give the pattern a name and a face. After the fall of the Empire, Luke attempted to train a new generation of Jedi. His most gifted student, Ben Solo, had so much potential that Luke was afraid of it. Rather than teaching Ben how to channel and develop that talent, Luke let his fear drive his approach, and Ben felt so much betrayal that he turned to the dark side and became the leader of the First Order. The weight of that failure was more than Luke could carry. So he vanished, retreating to a remote planet and living in isolation while the galaxy slipped back into darkness. He was not absent without reason. The reason was completely understandable. But the people who needed him bore the consequences of his disappearance regardless of how justified his retreat felt to him. Brandon frames this as a choice every leader will face after their worst moments: learn from the failure and force yourself back into the difficult places, or run from the weight of it and go into hiding. No one will fault you for stepping back. The pain is real and the logic of self-protection makes complete sense. But leadership does not stop needing to happen simply because the leader has been hurt. The people in your sphere will feel your absence whether they understand its cause or not. The call in this episode is not to pretend the failure did not happen or to minimize the weight of it. It is to recognize that the next stage of your leadership journey may be waiting on the other side of the very thing you have been unwilling to face. Staying hidden is always an option. Staying hidden always has a cost. KEY TAKEAWAYS Trauma is a natural protective response. Left unchecked, that same protection becomes the wall that keeps you from leading effectively. Your leadership philosophy should not change based on how painful your circumstances have been. Your commitment to show up is what separates leaders from former leaders. Retreating from leadership after failure is understandable. The people who needed you will bear the consequences of your absence either way. The dark places you have been avoiding may be exactly where your next season of leadership growth is waiting. Facing past failure is not about re-living the pain. It is about refusing to let the pain make your decisions for you. CLOSING REFLECTION Take five minutes and consider, what are some past failures you've been unwilling to revisit? Where have you become a recluse instead of staying engaged in the journey? FINAL THOUGHT You can learn from your worst moments and force yourself back into the scary places, or you can run and hide. No one will blame you for running. But everyone will bear the consequences of your absence. Stand up and face the things you do not want to face. The next great stage of your journey may be waiting on the other side. It's time to now go lead. /episode/index/show/e5273498-a381-49b4-bf95-392af7d8a33a/id/41958220

The Troglodyte 07/21/2026

Stage and Sphere 07/14/2026

Stage and Sphere Much of the conversation about leadership development focuses on the why, the how, and the when. This episode of Now Go Lead addresses something just as foundational and far less discussed: the where. Not where you are going, but where you are leading from, and whether the people you are leading are the right audience for the message you carry. Brandon Pinkerton introduces two concepts that work together to define your leadership effectiveness. The first is your platform: the place you stand to deliver your leadership message, built on your core beliefs and fundamental philosophy. Your platform is the foundation of your credibility. Speaking with authority outside of it does not just weaken your message; it puts the people in your care at risk by creating expectations you cannot honestly fulfill. The second is your sphere of influence: the people, teams, and organizations who make up the audience for your platform. Most leaders let their sphere develop organically over time without thinking about whether the audience they have accumulated actually aligns with the message they are trying to deliver. Brandon uses a clear illustration to make the mismatch visible. If your platform is built on experience running a small business but your sphere of influence is largely a group of hunting and fishing enthusiasts, you are going to struggle to speak with authority on the things that matter most to them. Most of your experience simply will not be relatable to their world. The problem is not passion. Brandon is honest that he will talk about leadership to almost anyone given the opportunity. The problem is fit. He invested significant time early in his journey pouring into people he thought were genuinely interested in his message, only to realize he was delivering to an audience that was humoring him, not digesting what he was saying. The turning point came when he stopped trying to reach everyone and started focusing his message on the right audience. That is when his influence began to grow in a meaningful way. The practical challenge this episode puts to every leader is not complicated, but it requires honesty. Define your platform clearly. Identify who your message is actually for. Then examine whether the sphere of influence you have built, intentionally or by default, matches that audience. If it does not, start making deliberate adjustments. Influence that is aligned carries further than influence that is simply loud. KEY TAKEAWAYS Your platform is the foundation of your leadership credibility. Speaking outside of it undermines your authority and puts your audience at risk. Your sphere of influence is the audience for your platform. Most leaders build it by accident. Effective leaders build it on purpose. Misalignment between your platform and your sphere means your message will not land, no matter how passionate you are about it. Trying to reach everyone is not a strategy. Narrowing your audience to those who will genuinely resonate with your message is what creates real growth. A well-positioned platform surrounded by the right alignments can carry your message well beyond the reach of your own voice. CLOSING REFLECTION Think about this for five minutes. What is my platform for leadership? And what changes do I need to make to my sphere of influence to increase the effectiveness of my message? FINAL THOUGHT It starts with a clear platform and a clear message. Then ask who you want to hear it. Everyone and anyone is not the right answer. When you know your platform and you know your audience, you can move forward with the confidence that you are operating from the right location. It's time to now go lead. /episode/index/show/e5273498-a381-49b4-bf95-392af7d8a33a/id/41958200

Obitus 07/07/2026

Obitus The culture you build as a leader is not shaped by your best days. It is shaped by how you respond on the worst ones. And in those moments, the question of who dies along the leadership journey has a very different answer depending on what kind of leader you have chosen to become. That is the question at the center of this episode of Now Go Lead. Brandon Pinkerton introduces a framework of three distinct leadership cultures, each defined by who absorbs the cost when things go wrong. The first is self-preservation: I live and you deal with the mess. Brandon is honest about recognizing this temptation in himself. When he was running his own firm, he would invest years building client relationships only to hand them off to his engineers and project managers for execution. When those relationships broke down and clients called to express their frustration, the pull to step back and let his team absorb the consequences was real. The pressure to lead is enormous, and when your best plans fail not for the first time but for the hundredth time, self-preservation can feel earned. The second culture is angry leadership: I die and you die with me. Brandon draws on a scene from the television series Justified, where the character Raylan, despite not thinking of himself as an angry man, is told by his ex-wife that he is the angriest person she has ever known. It is a precise description of what unexamined rage looks like from the outside. Brandon reflects on experiencing levels of anger in his leadership years that surprised him. He points to Moses, one of the most celebrated leaders in scripture, as someone whose simmering anger cost him the one thing he had spent his life pursuing. Anger is a natural response to being hurt. The greater the hurt, the greater the potential for a destructive response. And a leader who has not reckoned with their own capacity for rage is a leader with a live grenade in their hand. The third culture is sacrificial leadership: I die and you live. Brandon uses the animated film The Sheep Detectives to illustrate this. A reluctant leader named Sebastian, who tends to stay apart from the herd, steps directly into the path of two predators to protect sheep who had wandered into danger through their own carelessness. He was not responsible for the problem. He was not required to intervene. But he did, and it cost him his life. That, Brandon argues, is what genuine leadership sacrifice looks like: not a single heroic moment, but a continuous laying down of rights and privileges so that others can move closer to the vision. KEY TAKEAWAYS Every leadership response, especially under pressure, is laying one more brick in the culture you are building. Self-preservation is a natural temptation, but a leader who consistently chooses it eventually stops leading. Unexamined anger is one of the most dangerous forces in leadership. Know your own capacity for it before it surprises you. Sacrificial leadership is not a single dramatic act. It is the accumulation of daily decisions to absorb cost so others can move forward. The culture you build will ultimately dictate how everyone on your team handles the challenges they face. CLOSING REFLECTION Take five minutes and consider, what kind of culture of accountability am I creating? And maybe, what past reactions do I need to revisit with my team to set new expectations? FINAL THOUGHT The culture you build will eventually become the rules everyone plays by, including you. Choose now what kind of leader you are going to be when things go wrong. The people counting on you deserve an answer before the moment arrives. It's time to now go lead. /episode/index/show/e5273498-a381-49b4-bf95-392af7d8a33a/id/41958155

Bad Baseball 06/30/2026

Bad Baseball When you lead others, everyone gets a piece of you. The question is what you do in the moments when there is nothing left for yourself. This episode of Now Go Lead sits at the intersection of personal discipline, servant leadership, and the very real tension of protecting your own time while remaining genuinely available to the people who need you. Brandon Pinkerton opens with a season most leaders recognize: a self-imposed writing deadline, a blocked calendar that slowly emptied, and the familiar pattern of handing away planned focus time to put out other people's fires. He had been working toward a goal that mattered to him, and the days kept filling up with everything else. Then came a moment that distilled the tension perfectly. Midway through lunch at home, his wife mentioned that his daughters wanted to go to a baseball game that afternoon and asked if he could take them. It was an unusual request during what was supposed to be a writing day, and Brandon was honest about what it cost him in the moment. He wanted the time for his book. He took his girls to the game. Once they arrived, the girls ran off to be with their friends and Brandon spent most of the afternoon watching baseball from the stands, largely alone. He does not regret going. That is the point. The decision that looked like an interruption was actually an expression of the same values he leads by every day: people come before projects, even when the project is your own. The writing still got done, finished in the margins of a life that included a wedding, a college recruiting trip, and a team deadline. The margins, Brandon observes, are often where leaders do their most significant work. The challenge in this episode is not about time management. It is about the orientation of your heart when the demands come. Selfishness and bitterness are quiet threats to any leader who gives consistently. Knowing your top-line priorities in advance, the ones that function as settled decisions before the moment of conflict arrives, is what allows you to give freely without resentment when the moment does come. KEY TAKEAWAYS Servant leadership has a real personal cost, and acknowledging that honestly is not a weakness. Knowing your non-negotiable top-line priorities before the conflict arrives allows you to decide quickly and serve without resentment. The interruption that looks like a loss may be an expression of your most important values in action. Leaders often get their most significant personal work done in the margins of a full life, not in the ideal conditions they planned for. The internal posture you bring to sacrifice matters as much as the sacrifice itself. Bitterness quietly erodes your ability to lead well. CLOSING REFLECTION Take five minutes and consider, where have I let selfishness override my service to others? Where have I let bitterness towards others overtake my joy for serving them? FINAL THOUGHT Your priorities will be tested in the moments when you have the least to give. Knowing what matters before those moments arrive is what makes it possible to show up well when they do. Others will need your leadership precisely when you feel least able to offer it. That is not a burden. It is the work. It's time to now go lead. /episode/index/show/e5273498-a381-49b4-bf95-392af7d8a33a/id/41958130

Bad Baseball 06/30/2026

You Are the Reason 06/23/2026

You Are the Reason The reason you lead matters more than the results you produce, and your followers need to see it clearly in every decision you make. This episode of Now Go Lead tackles one of the quieter challenges of leadership development: the gap between what you know about your own motives and what the people around you actually believe about them. Brandon Pinkerton opens with a sobering frame. The average person makes around 35,000 decisions a day. Most are automatic. But as a leader, the ones that carry weight are watched closely by everyone in your orbit, and they become the evidence others use to judge your character. When you succeed, the applause is easy to receive. The risk is that the people celebrating what you accomplished stop seeing why you did it. Brandon shares a personal account from one of the most significant decisions of his life: selling the business he had spent years building. The financial gain was real and undeniable. So was the internal conflict. He had spent years making choices that prioritized people over profit, and selling felt like it could erase that record in a single transaction. What he does not tell people easily is that the majority of his energy during that period went not into the deal terms, but into ensuring every member of his team had a secure and stable future on the other side. Most of the people he spoke with afterward wanted to talk about the money. Very few asked about the people. And that gap, between what he had actually done and what others assumed he had done, is the tension at the center of this episode. The challenge he puts to every leader listening is not about optics or reputation management. It is about clarity of purpose. If the reason you lead gets lost in the noise of your accomplishments, it is your responsibility to bring it back into focus. The people you lead deserve to know not just what you decided, but why. KEY TAKEAWAYS Your decisions are the primary evidence others use to evaluate your character as a leader, whether or not that evidence is read correctly. Success creates a visibility problem: people begin to see what you accomplished rather than the heart behind why you did it. The gap between your actual motives and what others perceive is a leadership communication challenge you are responsible for closing. Putting people ahead of financial gain is not a personality trait you announce. It is a pattern that must show up consistently in the decisions others can observe over time. The reason you lead must remain visible in every significant decision you make, especially the ones others are most likely to misread. CLOSING REFLECTION Take five minutes and consider, what decisions have I made that are often misinterpreted by others? Where do I need to bring clarity to my leadership message about the reason I'm leading? FINAL THOUGHT The people you lead are always watching your decisions. Make sure that what they see lines up with the reason you chose to lead in the first place. The why behind your leadership is not self-evident. It has to be communicated, over and over, through what you choose and why you choose it. It's time to now go lead. /episode/index/show/e5273498-a381-49b4-bf95-392af7d8a33a/id/41958085

You Are The Reason 06/23/2026

Unsolvable Problems 06/16/2026

Unsolvable Problems The hardest problems you will face as a leader are rarely solved by working harder or longer. Leadership development demands that you learn to see what you have refused to see, confront what you have protected, and make decisions for the greater good even when the cost is personal. That is the subject of this episode of Now Go Lead. Brandon Pinkerton shares a season from his own leadership journey when he spent six months trying to move a critical initiative forward without making any real progress. His team of six people, all long-tenured and close, was stalling. The organization had assigned him a significant challenge, one too large to solve alone, and nothing was working. The answer, when it finally came to him, made him physically sick. The obstacle was not a process problem, a resource problem, or a strategy problem. It was a person he deeply cared about, a close friend he had known since they were teenagers, who also happened to be on his team. The episode explores what happens when the solution to an unsolvable problem costs you something you did not want to give up. Brandon reflects honestly on the blind spots he had created through years of quietly protecting a friend at the expense of the rest of the team. The decision he ultimately made, to restructure the team in a way that prioritized organizational progress over personal comfort, solved the problem immediately but came at a real personal cost. The friendship did not survive intact, and Brandon still thinks about whether he made the right call. That honesty is what makes this episode worth sitting with. The further you advance as a leader, the more the problems resist easy answers. Relentless focus, unflinching honesty about what is actually holding things back, and a willingness to do the hard thing even when it hurts you personally, these are not personality traits you either have or do not have. They are choices you make, or avoid making, every time a difficult situation arrives. KEY TAKEAWAYS Unsolvable problems usually have a solvable answer that you are not yet willing to accept. Blind spots created by loyalty or affection can stall a team just as effectively as any strategic failure. Leaders who protect individuals at the expense of the group eventually lose the confidence of everyone on the team. The right decision and the comfortable decision are often not the same thing, and choosing comfort is still a choice with consequences. You cannot expect anyone else to solve what only you, as the leader, can see clearly enough to address. CLOSING REFLECTION Take five minutes and consider where have you let some blind spots slow or stop progress with your team. If it comes to making a difficult decision, what will be your priority? Yourself or others? FINAL THOUGHT The problems that feel unsolvable are often waiting on you to become the kind of leader willing to solve them. That requires seeing clearly, acting honestly, and accepting that the cost may be real. It's time to now go lead. /episode/index/show/e5273498-a381-49b4-bf95-392af7d8a33a/id/41958060

Unsolvable Problems 06/16/2026

Peter Out 06/09/2026

Peter Out Developing next-level leaders is one of the most intentional, long-term investments a leader can make — and the story of St. Peter offers one of the most honest and instructive case studies in what that development actually looks like. The people you are building for leadership will not always perform under pressure the way you expect. They will have moments of fierce devotion and moments of stunning failure. They will make promises they cannot keep and let you down at the worst possible time. That is not a reason to stop investing in them. It is the nature of the work. Brandon Pinkerton walks through Peter's story not as a spiritual lesson but as a leadership study — and what it reveals about the kind of intentional, relationship-driven mentorship that actually produces next-level leaders. Peter was not a polished candidate. He was a fisherman, passionate to a fault, capable of both extraordinary loyalty and spectacular collapse. When the moment of crisis came, he did not rise to meet it. He denied the very leader he had pledged his life to, then watched that leader be led away to his death. The shame and loss that followed were real. But what happened next is where the leadership lesson lives. The leader returned, restored Peter rather than dismissed him, and handed him the full weight of the mission. He did not do this because Peter had proven himself flawless. He did it because he had spent years preparing Peter — every conversation intentional, every encounter tied to something deeper than the moment. That preparation is what made the restoration possible. Peter did not just know what leadership would require in theory. He had watched his leader live it out — fourteen-hour days, sleepless nights, long stretches away from family, the weight of enormous responsibility carried with resolve. When the call to lead finally came, Peter understood what he was accepting. And he accepted it fully. KEY TAKEAWAYS • Developing a leader happens over years of close, intentional relationship — not a training program, not a single high-stakes moment, but consistent investment over time. • The people you are building for leadership will fail you in a crisis. Expect it, prepare for it, and do not let it end your investment in them. • Your example is the curriculum. What you model in your own leadership — how you handle difficulty, pressure, sacrifice, and long seasons of hard work — is exactly what your people are being prepared to replicate. • Restoring someone who has failed requires more than forgiveness. It requires that you have already built the kind of relationship in which restoration is possible and the mission can still be entrusted. • The measure of your leadership development is not whether your people perform perfectly — it is whether they are prepared to carry the vision forward when the time comes. CLOSING REFLECTION Take five minutes and consider: When your followers eventually get the call to leadership, will you have them prepared? What expectations have you set by the example of your leadership? FINAL THOUGHT Developing leadership in someone is not easy and it happens over years of close personal relationships. You have to make moment-by-moment intentional gains against the raw talent and ambition that exists in others. Even still, sometimes the people you feel are most loyal and devoted to you will let you down in a crisis. And when that happens, always be prepared to take back a willing heart who is committed to move forward with your forgiveness. It's time to now go lead. /episode/index/show/e5273498-a381-49b4-bf95-392af7d8a33a/id/41958020

Peter Out 06/09/2026

You're Not Ready 06/02/2026

You're Not Ready One of the most uncomfortable truths in leadership development is this: knowing where you want to go and actually being ready to get there are two entirely different things — and confusing them is one of the most costly mistakes a leader can make. Preparing yourself and your people for the next phase of the journey is one of your most important responsibilities as a leader. You are the one who sets the vision. You carry the greatest perspective on what it is going to take to make it happen. But vision alone is not enough. The gap between where you are and where you are going must be honestly assessed, and that assessment must include the people around you. If you push toward the next level without the right people in place, you are not being bold. You are setting yourself up for heartache and loss. Brandon Pinkerton draws on one of the most consequential leadership failures in recorded history to make this point. When Moses led the Israelites out of Egypt and toward the land they had been promised, the scouts he sent ahead came back with a clear report: the land was everything they had hoped for, but the people already living there were formidable. The news broke the resolve of the nation. They decided they would rather have stayed as slaves than face what was ahead. Moses had a compelling vision and a clear destination — but he did not have the right people ready to pursue it. The result was years of wandering while an entirely new generation was built for the journey. The lesson is not about the difficulty of the obstacle. It is about the honesty of the assessment. Every leader faces a moment where they must look at their team, look at their vision, and reckon with the gap between the two. Some people on your current team have a place in the next chapter. Some do not. The leader's job is to identify both groups clearly and begin the hard work of coaching people up or helping them find a better fit — before the journey demands a cost no one wanted to pay. KEY TAKEAWAYS • Knowing where the vision leads is only part of leadership — you must also honestly assess whether you and your people are ready to get there. • Pushing toward the next level with the wrong people in place does not accelerate progress; it guarantees a longer and more painful path. • A gap analysis is not optional — every leader owes their team and their vision a clear-eyed look at who fits the next chapter and who does not. • Some people on your team need to be coached up; others need to be helped toward a better fit. Avoiding that conversation costs the whole team. • Self-deception is the enemy of vision. The more bad fits you try to bring along, the longer you spend wandering while the goal waits just out of reach. CLOSING REFLECTION Take five minutes and think, what is it that I need to address to get to the next level of the journey? And who are the people currently with me who need to grow up or find a new home? FINAL THOUGHT The vision is real. Whether you are ready to pursue it is a question only honesty can answer. Look in the mirror. Assess your people. Close the gap before the journey closes it for you. It's time to now go lead. /episode/index/show/e5273498-a381-49b4-bf95-392af7d8a33a/id/41958000

You're Not Ready 06/02/2026

Vincimus 05/26/2026

Vincimus Growing your people is not optional once you take on the responsibility of leading others — and this episode of the Now Go Lead leadership development podcast gets to the heart of what that obligation actually costs you. The moment you step into a leadership role, the same intentional effort you have invested in your own growth must now extend to every person in your care. That is not a footnote to the job. That is the job. Brandon Pinkerton makes the case plainly: any individual on your team who is not growing and developing new skills is becoming a liability to the entire enterprise. If your people are not advancing at the same pace as your vision, the progress of the whole team begins to erode from the inside out — quietly, and often before you notice it. When people are not given the opportunity to grow, they do not stand still. They start to expect more compensation for producing the same results. Given enough time, that resentment builds until the relationship between leader and follower fractures. The talent you need most is the first to leave. Brandon draws on the story of Gary Bertier — the all-American linebacker whose journey in Remember the Titans illustrates what it looks like when a leader finally understands this truth. Gary was talented enough to carry himself. What he eventually had to learn was that to reach the highest levels, he had to carry his team with him. He had to humble himself to the work of developing others. And in doing so, he made his greatest contribution to the team — not on the field, but in what he taught and exemplified along the way. KEY TAKEAWAYS • Every individual on your team who is not growing is becoming a liability — the cost of stagnation compounds over time for the entire group. • When people are not developed, they do not stay neutral; they begin to expect more for the same output, and acrimony between leader and team is the eventual result. • Your individual talent and capability, however exceptional, will never take you to the highest levels if you cannot humble yourself to the work of developing others. • The best leaders advance the entire team — not just themselves — because they understand that reaching their own goals requires it. • Your greatest contribution as a leader may not be what you accomplish personally, but what you teach and exemplify for the people beside you. CLOSING REFLECTION Take five minutes and consider who are the underdeveloped people that are with you on your journey currently? Where have you sacrificed long-term progress by not taking the time to develop people in the present? FINAL THOUGHT You can be the most talented person in the room and still be the reason your team stalls. Growing others is not a bonus task for leaders with extra bandwidth — it is the core work.
