I’ve walked through many transitions myself, from being a professional ballerina to building my own business while raising twins. What I teach is how to fortify yourself so that you’re ready for the next step, whatever that may be." [3:39] Can you share the journey that brought you to where you are now? "It’s been a long road with many changes. From pursuing ballet, then moving into hospitality, and later running a business while raising my twins, I’ve had to learn how to embrace change and move forward without losing myself. Each step came with its own challenges, but those experiences shaped who I am today and why I teach others to face their struggles head-on." [8:26] How did your experiences with your twins and your business influence your current message? "It wasn’t easy. Juggling the demands of a business and raising twins pushed me to my limits. There were many hard moments where I wanted to give up, but those struggles forced me to dig deep and find the strength to keep going. That’s where my concept of ‘fortifying for your future’ came from. It’s about building the strength to overcome challenges and being prepared for whatever comes next." [10:16] What advice do you give people who feel overwhelmed by their current hardships? "Start by looking inward. Identify your core values and align your actions with them. Often, people are stuck in patterns because they haven't truly defined what matters to them. By getting clear on your values and aligning your efforts with them, you can start to build a life that feels fulfilling and purposeful." [19:08] How does someone figure out what their values are? "It takes time, but it starts with self-reflection. You might admire people who are doing things that resonate with you, or you may feel drawn to something your heart desires. It’s about exploring those feelings and trying new things until you find what truly lights you up. Once you have that clarity, the path forward becomes much clearer." [25:18] What is the next step once someone has identified their values? "Once you know what’s important to you, the next step is implementing habits and actions that support those values. "A 'PhD Speaker' is someone who speaks with expertise, creating new knowledge rather than just repeating existing information. It’s about being a content expert who motivates. For me, this involved asking myself three fundamental questions: What am I passionate about? Where do I have proficiency? Is there a possibility to speak in this area? It’s not just about speaking; it's about adding value and creating a meaningful impact." [12:28] How did your personal journey, like your trip to Ghana, shape your perspective on meaningful work? "My trip to Ghana was transformative. It was a journey to confront my father and understand my heritage. Choosing to forgive him opened up a whole new dimension of my identity. I embraced my Ghanaian roots and started initiatives to give back, like building schools in Ghana. This experience enriched my message and allowed me to step on stage with authenticity, representing my heritage proudly." [17:40] How can someone find and clarify their own message as a speaker? "It’s a process that takes time and introspection. For me, it was about listening to what people said I spoke about, mind mapping my thoughts, and consulting with friends and coaches. Over nine months, I clarified my message: it’s not about finding meaning in your work; it's about bringing meaning to it. "I see myself stepping back from running Work Meaningful and focusing on my role as a visionary founder. I want to continue creating content, impacting change management, and furthering the work we do through our foundation. This internal battle ignited a fire – the warrior spirit I'd buried as a stay-at-home mom resurfaced. This awakening was my turning point. It was scary, but I embraced authenticity. They weren't facing their inner giants, living a daily lie. Yelling instructions or new diets wouldn't solve it. They needed an "inside strategy" – purging negativity, letting go of the past, and fighting for their future selves. Otherwise, it was a cycle of quick weight loss followed by regain. This is when I knew I had to share my story. I'd battled eating disorders, a dishonest marriage, and actions I wasn't proud of. My own "wake-up call" almost cost me my life, but it also showed me how to help others. Being vulnerable about my past became the key to guiding them on the right path. [13:20] How does one begin to define and give the necessary honor and focus to solving their struggles? Many of my clients are high-achieving women who project strength outwardly. They juggle careers and families, presenting a "grin and bear it" facade. However, this often masks a fear of vulnerability. They don't want to burden their partners or express their true needs. This lack of communication hinders their growth. I believe the path to transformation is threefold. The first step is surrender. This isn't giving up entirely, but rather questioning what truly serves them. Letting go of outdated versions of themselves, even if they were once successful, is crucial. For example, a client who loved training might realize they no longer want to be a personal trainer. This doesn't negate their past passion, but it allows them to embrace their current aspirations. Surrender leads to introspection. It requires asking the hard questions, even the uncomfortable ones most people avoid. This "facing your giants" involves questioning your current reality. It may mean letting go of outdated goals like constant calorie tracking. True growth comes from within, not by adding more burdens. Anyone can develop communication skills! From reading to online courses, there are many resources available, and some people naturally pick them up through these methods. However, if you're impatient to reach your full potential, working with a coach offers a significant advantage. Communication trainers specialize in this unique field, guiding you through the deeper layers and helping you achieve results faster. Imagine reaching your communication goals in six months instead of five to ten years on your own. [14:40] What are your biggest hurdles to becoming a top speaker? Are you focusing on developing specific skills or overcoming personal challenges? Initially, I thought certifications were enough to launch my coaching business. But the real turning point came when I offered free coaching sessions. Anyone interested, regardless of budget, could benefit from my guidance. This approach helped me develop my skills and build a strong foundation. Within a few years, I was attracting high-paying coaching clients with ease. Today, I can take on as many clients as my schedule allows. Similar to coaching, I'm currently replicating this strategy in the speaking world. Building a coaching business requires content testing, like I'm doing with my keynote speech. Right now, it's not ready to be monetized. These processes take time, and a financial cushion allows you to take calculated risks. My biggest lesson: temper your leap of faith with practical planning. Fast forward to years later, and I found myself a mother of two, fighting for my life. It's a struggle to make sense of it all. I share this to illustrate how life can take unexpected turns. It's astonishing how many individuals nowadays claim to be Ayahuasca shamans, as if merely touching the medicine grants them instant expertise. Yet, to truly honor the tradition, one must embark on a journey spanning 10 to 20 years. My realization came when my elder and teacher, Patricia Dominguez, appeared in the film "Spirit Molecule." He's portrayed as a charismatic figure with his hair twisted into a bun, a nod to the tradition of the twisted-haired people within his tribe. This lineage of medicine people dates back anciently, surviving despite the onslaught of conquest, disease, and other challenges. There are pockets of such traditions still thriving in regions like China, Tibet, Africa, and the Andes. These individuals possess an undeniable power, almost palpable, akin to plugging a device into an electrical outlet. I had the privilege of studying under him for 15 years. He referred to this power as "the force," connecting it to concepts of the great mystery, God, or Creator Source. He likened it to the force in "Star Wars," a term relatable even to mainstream audiences. When one taps into this force, it's akin to igniting a lightsaber, illuminating one's path with its brilliance. [12:48] Would you be open to freely expressing yourself and your language to the world? In my tradition, we liken shamans to spiritual lawyers. They're akin to the medicine men of old, who held esteemed positions within their communities. I found a holistic health center on Long Island where the women are like angels and Reiki Masters. Their presence is truly transformative. Even though I'm not typically into card readings, I did some for them, and they were hooked. They attended my presentation, and it changed their lives. They're reaching out, saying they feel like they're on LSD or high—it's the spirit world. Native American traditions, with their deep spiritual understanding and mathematical prowess, have explored these realms for centuries, which is evident in their remarkable achievements like Chichen Itza. [28:30] How do you keep moving forward and overcome obstacles as you share your message? I consider myself resilient, often likened to the Capricorn climbing the mountain. Facing the necessity of seeking a job I don't desire only strengthens my resolve and work ethic. The second stage is termed defensive, characterized by heightened emotions, whether it's anger, defensiveness, or, conversely, frustration towards the perceived urgency of social justice efforts. This can manifest in phrases like "Why are we still discussing this? It's 2024," or "We've been grappling with this for 500 years; we should have moved past it by now." Both expressions are laden with intense emotional reactions. However, when emotions run high, it often leads to defensiveness and hampers genuine dialogue. In this stage, individuals may be unaware of alternative perspectives but may express their views sharply due to the emotional weight behind them. [9:42] Where does all this stuff sit in terms of progression through your work? Yeah, so it's really about it all comes down to the idea of releasing that guilt and shame. And then allow us to have authentic conversations in the moment. If those main points are brought in. That's what I bring to the table when I come and speak on stage. When I'm offering facilitated work, it's about helping people look in the mirror, starting with ourselves before working on anyone else. And then before we start to unite society, so our name squared is understand self United Society. The three-phase process we go through is to understand ourselves, gain that awareness, gain the wisdom of others around us, and then empower society. [10:50] What is some of the reasoning behind why it's so incredibly important for you? I have wanted to do social justice work since college, when I was exposed to it. However, I didn't feel the internal drive and spark to be on stage and to make this my life's calling until my son was born. My son is a biracial child multiracial child, but to the rest of society, he's a black man in America. My son, being biracial, is perceived by society as a black man in America. His birth brought to light the comments, looks, and phrases I had known about but hadn't personally encountered until then. Realizing the societal perceptions of me and the privileges attached to my identity, I understood the need to leverage that privilege to advocate for those without the same opportunities. The phrase "I use my breath to speak for those who can't breathe" took on a whole new significance with my son's birth and my heightened experiences. [15:15] Who is the perfect group of people for you to talk to? It's about stepping in front of leaders who have the opportunity to empower the teams that they work with. Because too often in our society, leaders come in with a very dictator-like approach rather than a human-centered approach. So we help them see how asking questions, having honest conversations, and allowing their teams to come authentically as themselves to work is going to be more productive for everyone and ultimately, just a better environment and a better culture for not only the employees but also the clients and customers they serve. [16:20] Have you ever gotten responses from people just so people can hear, listen, and see what happens on the backside of the things you're talking to? Yeah, honestly, I feel like this has been happening more frequently, especially since the launch of my book. We've been receiving a lot of feedback from individuals who received pre-copies for reviews and testimonials, as well as from those who attended the launch. Already, people are expressing how much the book has influenced their approach to conversations. As a former educator, much of our work began in the school systems, and it's rewarding to hear teachers discuss how they've adjusted their lesson plans to include diverse perspectives in history. It's not about changing what we teach but rather incorporating more aspects into our curriculum. Individuals who read the book are finding the language to articulate their feelings without feeling guilty, as we all possess biases and initial thoughts. The book facilitates discussions in a way that allows people to acknowledge and own their biases without shame or guilt. [17:35] What's the title of the book? The title of the book is Metamorphosis. It’s a juxtaposition of metamorphosis and justice. [18:05] What compelled you to write a book? It's been on my mind to write books for decades, probably for about 20 years. As an educator, there was always this notion that we needed a book that presented things in a certain way. However, I never really dedicated the time to buckle down and commit to it until recently. Over the past couple of years, as my business has grown, clients have been asking me more frequently, "Where's your book? Why haven't you published one yet?" About a year ago, I finally decided to take the plunge and do it. It's almost as if my clients and team staged a mini-intervention. There was a meeting where I was discussing with one client, and another client who happened to be there joined in. We have a close-knit community, much like your program, where everyone knows each other. Several people chimed in, including some of my team members, encouraging me to prioritize writing the book. They said, "No, you need to do it." My team rallied around me, offering their support and assistance to make it happen. Since it had been on my mind for so long and I already had outlines prepared, the writing process wasn't as daunting as I initially thought. This book is just the first of seven that I have planned. I aim to release seven books a year for the next three and a half years. [19:39] What are the seven books tied to the seven stages? The number seven seems to have a recurring presence in my life, although I'm not exactly sure of its significance. It just tends to appear, whether it's the seven core principles we adhere to or the fact that my son was born on the seventh. Seven has always held a special resonance for me, although I can't explain why. When I started writing the books or outlining them, I didn't set out with the intention of having seven. However, upon completion, there were indeed seven books. It's not a deliberate choice but rather something that seems to naturally align with my life. I've stopped trying to decipher its meaning and simply accept it as part of my journey. [21:10] But there has to be a larger vision guiding our actions beyond immediate results. What does that distant vision look like for you? Yeah, so my distant vision is to depolarize and humanize difficult conversations so that we can talk about social justice without the polarization that occurs in our society. Currently, the mere mention of terms like "social justice" or "DEI" often triggers visceral reactions, with people bracing themselves for accusations or political debates. My deep-seated aspiration is to normalize conversations about social justice and equity in mainstream society, free from polarization and the assumption of political undertones. On a personal level, my goal is relatable to many parents: to leave the world a better place for my children, grandchildren, and future generations. I am committed to ensuring that each subsequent generation enjoys a better quality of life than the one before, constantly striving to improve the human experience for those who come after me. [23:30] What aspirations do you have for your life and work that would instill a sense of freedom in you? Indeed, it's a twofold endeavor for me. Firstly, I aim to cultivate a sense of freedom for everyone to embrace their authentic selves without fear or inhibition. I aspire to attain a level of freedom where I can walk down the street with my son or partner without constantly worrying about our safety. I long for the freedom to live in a world where I don't have to glance over my shoulder due to societal rejection of my identity or those within my circle. This notion of deep-seated freedom speaks to the essence of what it means to live in a society that champions freedom and bravery. However, the reality is that not all of us enjoy such freedom in our current societal landscape. My hope and intention in pursuing this work and engaging in open, honest conversations is to create a world where everyone can freely and confidently express their true selves without fear of harm or discrimination. [2:20] How did you recognize in your heart that there was something more for you? What really resonated with me were two key moments. Firstly, that exhilarating feeling post-workout when everything feels aligned and endorphins are flowing. I vividly recall a particular speaking engagement in front of roughly 10,000 people, where the energy exchanged was palpable. The flood of messages afterward left me moved to tears, realizing that perhaps speaking was a gift I never knew I possessed. It was akin to the high after an intense workout. This experience affirmed my calling to pursue speaking professionally. Despite having a fulfilling career with the state police and as a first responder, I reached a point where I knew I couldn't ignore this newfound passion. I distinctly remember the pivotal moment during a drive to my office, grappling with the fear of leaving behind the camaraderie of law enforcement. I realized that regardless of tenure, everyone eventually part ways with their colleagues. [6:05] When you went to this space, did you find yourself missing the camaraderie? I understand the struggle, especially since speaking engagements can often be inconsistent. Recently, I even considered joining the firehouse as a volunteer, drawn to the camaraderie I miss from my time in law enforcement. However, upon reflection, I realized that as much as I miss that sense of community, it doesn't outweigh my commitment to my current path. Balancing both my direct sales business and speaking engagements proved challenging, leading me to prioritize where my passion truly lies. While it meant letting go of the familiarity of the state police, I knew it was necessary to pursue something greater. Every morning, I wake up reaffirmed in my belief that speaking is where I need to be, even if it requires sacrificing other opportunities. As the saying goes, sometimes you have to let go of the good to embrace the great. It's about growth and staying true to your purpose, even during challenging times. [8:00] What is it that you do daily that you think most people probably aren't doing? It's about starting where you are with what you have. I've learned over my 12 years of speaking, but professionally for the past two and a half, that comparing your journey to others can be misleading. When I began, I focused on making my presence known, even if it meant speaking for minimal compensation. I didn't stress about earning large fees early on; instead, I prioritized building my reputation and network. Even now, I approach each event with a commitment to deliver my best, knowing that my fees will naturally increase over time. It's easy to fall into the trap of comparing your beginning to someone else's middle or end. People often overlook their own starting point and the incremental progress they've made. Whether it's speaking to a small group of 17 people in a library or honing your skills over a decade without financial reward, everyone has to start somewhere. The key is to focus on your own journey and progress rather than fixating on unrealistic expectations or comparing yourself to others. [10:30] In the business aspect, what objectives do you aim to achieve within the next 12 to 18 months? I'm determined to double my speaking income over the next 12 to 18 months. This involves a strategic approach, possibly doing fewer events but at higher fees. I've learned from facing rejection in lower-paying events, understanding that it's part of the process to grow into higher-paying opportunities. Each rejection has been a stepping stone, preparing me for larger speaking fees. I often reflect on my journey and remind myself to "grow through" each experience, understanding that becoming a $50,000 speaker, for example, requires earning that position through a process. Sometimes, we may feel ready for the next level, but it's only when we reach it that we realize the growth we've undergone. It's all part of the continuous learning curve of this profession. [14:28] How does your work support those unsure about launching a speaking business or considering returning to a regular job? In my Personal Perseverance Project (P3), one of my core principles is the importance of having a clear vision for your life. Too often, people simply accept their circumstances instead of actively shaping their future. For me, this realization hit hard when my best friend, a SWAT team member, was tragically killed in the line of duty. One moment, we were planning a family trip, and the next, I was mourning his loss. It made me realize that life doesn't offer warning shots; we must seize each moment to pursue our dreams and goals without hesitation. This experience underscored the significance of having a vision and cultivating the right mindset. I've dedicated myself to personal development, immersing myself in the wisdom of mentors like Brendon Burchard and Tony Robbins, understanding that success leaves clues. Even when surrounded by negativity, I turn to books, podcasts, and other resources to fuel my growth. It's about starting where you are, reshaping your mindset, and embracing a sense of urgency. Procrastination remains a significant barrier for many, especially in the aftermath of the pandemic. My mission is to inspire others to break free from this inertia, to move them emotionally, and to empower them to elevate their lives through vision, mindset, and a relentless sense of urgency. [17:55] Does having a clear vision assist individuals in breaking free from that feeling? Or is it a factor that's tangentially related to it? Having a clear vision is crucial, and it's something that evolves over time. Reflecting on my journey, my vision has shifted significantly. Initially, it was simply about getting financially stable and healthy for my family, especially as we faced significant debt due to past financial decisions. Now, it's grown into a desire to make a significant impact, reaching thousands through speaking engagements and perhaps even publishing another book. Vision serves as a guiding light, pulling us toward our aspirations and giving our actions purpose. Personally, I surround myself with reminders of my goals, like pictures of a beach house in my office, grounding me in my purpose each day. It's essential to regularly reassess and adjust our visions as we progress through the chapters of our lives, ensuring they remain aligned with our evolving ambitions and values. [19:50] Where do you see mindset being the piece that plugs in? I couldn't agree more. From my own experience, I've realized that having a clear vision is paramount. When I first started my business, I hit a plateau after a couple of years. It felt like I was spinning my wheels, unable to make significant progress. It took a mentor's insight to shake me out of that rut. They pointed out that my lack of personal growth was hindering my professional development. Initially, I brushed off the idea, thinking I didn't need motivational pep talks. However, I soon discovered that investing time in personal growth, even just 10 minutes a day of reading or listening to insightful content, had a transformative effect. It not only rejuvenated my business but also improved my marriage and expanded my impact on others. I've made it a non-negotiable part of my daily routine ever since. Mindset truly is everything. When you prioritize mental well-being and continuously seek to expand your horizons, everything else falls into place. Even exercise, which I now consider a cornerstone of my routine, contributes to this holistic approach to mindset. Ultimately, maintaining a healthy mindset and actively pursuing personal growth are the keys to success in all areas of life. Defining your message and committing to personal growth are essential first steps on the journey to success. [3:30] If you don't mind sharing, from your perspective, how would you respond if someone in an elevator asked, "What do you do?" My expertise is focused on self-mastery, but I also as you would say, in school minor and leadership and really developing brands that impact the world. [3:48] Which brand did you develop that made a significant impact on the world and provided you with valuable insights? My personal brand centers around evolved mastery, focusing on personal growth through self-mastery. The color scheme of gold, black, and white symbolizes the journey: black represents the challenges we face, and gold signifies the transformation of those challenges into enlightenment that we share with the world. Initially, I developed my brand out of necessity, as I was relatively unknown despite my behind-the-scenes work and my background as a pastor. As I transitioned into the realm of personal and professional development, my brand evolved to reflect a commitment to self-mastery and adaptability, allowing me to reach diverse audiences effectively. The impetus for creating my brand was to amplify my impact, particularly with the launch of my first book. That's essentially how my brand journey began. [5:20] How did you evolve into the confident person you are today, ready to share your story with the world? My journey started 20 years ago with a failed suicide attempt. I had a tough time growing up, facing abuse, molestation, and deep depression. But after surviving that attempt, I had a big realization: what happened to me didn't define me, but how I responded did. This inspired me to change my life. By the time I was 21, I quit drinking, drugs, and gang involvement. I grew up in Virginia's Bible Belt, so my focus was on church. I studied Bible and Eastern religions, eventually becoming a pastor. But after five years, I felt I needed to do more. I realized I couldn't change things from within the system. I decided to share my story with the world, hoping to help others facing similar struggles. That's when I discovered the power of my experiences to reach and inspire millions. [8:25] What was your journey like in deciding to lean in, and how did you begin the process of building your speaking business? Well, you know, I didn't jump into speaking or building my speaking business right away. Even though I spoke on stages because people knew me as a pastor, I didn't actively pursue big stages initially. I've always believed the stage is sacred because of its power to impact lives. Most of my journey lacked mentors until I connected with Zig Ziglar, Dr. Wayne Dyer, and Les Brown. Then in 2005, I discovered Tony Robbins, which opened my eyes to the global impact I could have. I immersed myself in self-education, learning from multidimensional speakers who mastered various areas. Back then, social media wasn't as prevalent, so I focused on developing expertise rather than gaining attention. Nowadays, anyone can claim to be a speaker, but true expertise is crucial. Seek out mentors and do your research. I spent hours studying speaking and entrepreneurship, understanding the business side beyond the glamour. It's a journey of continuous growth and dedication. [13:55] Have you ever experienced moments where you felt like you bombed on stage or had difficult conversations with your agents, but looking back, you realize those moments were critical for your success? Man, going back to my first time on stage is where it all started for me. I had to speak for just 15 minutes, and initially, I was pumped, with all my notes and sticky pointers ready. But as I was about to go on, nerves hit me hard. A year and a half after my life changed, doubt crept in. I started comparing myself to others, feeling like an impostor. My mentor, who also introduced me to Les Brown, noticed my distress and reminded me of the power of my story. He challenged me to ditch the notes and just share my story. That moment flipped a switch for me. From then on, I've never prepared for a speech in the traditional sense. I just study and let it flow naturally. It's been over 19 years now, and stepping on stage feels like second nature. It's all about staying ready so you don't have to get ready. [19:38] How did you overcome feeling inadequate or hesitant when starting out, especially considering the fear of bothering others or feeling inferior to them? Well, in the beginning, all I had were books because social media wasn't around. Unless I was introduced to people like Les Brown, I had to hustle hard. I sold furniture and washed windows - coming from a background in gangs, money was tight. So, I'd do whatever it took to attend events, soaking up every bit of knowledge I could. Nowadays, with social media, it's easier. My advice to listeners is to be genuine. Don't just reach out to someone for their following; engage with their content, buy their books, and utilize their resources. I have books, a podcast, and more, all offering insights. It's about being a dedicated student of the craft. Ask for referrals from those who are genuinely making strides, and don't believe everything you see. That's the real challenge. [29:25] For the head, could you provide a strategic piece of advice that you believe would be a game-changer for them in their business journey? And for the heart, could you share some words of wisdom and encouragement to help them persevere through tough times? This is wonderful, and I'm glad we're ending on this note. For those listening and yearning to make a bigger impact, the first step is clarifying your vision. Many times, we desire to make an impact but lack a clear vision or set achievable goals. I challenge you to envision yourself as the version of speaking on big stages, booking high-profile appointments, and delivering impactful keynotes. How does that version of you show up daily? What circles do they engage in? How do they present themselves on social media? Once you're clear on this vision, reverse-engineer the process. Identify the steps needed to manifest that version of yourself in the present. Goals are essential, but they require actionable steps. Seek guidance if needed, and focus on one goal at a time. Avoid rushing to level 10 when you're just starting at level one; this only breeds stress and imposter syndrome. Remember, every decision and action shape your lifestyle. Set goals that align with the version of yourself you aspire to be and take consistent action towards them. Understand that if you can envision that version of yourself, it already exists. Your response in the present moment, combined with clear vision and action, brings that vision to life. Your spirit wouldn't show you something impossible. So, if you're a speaker driven to make a lasting impact, get crystal clear on your vision and watch the provision follow suit. That's my advice for you today.
