S3E13 Your Grief Matters with Annie Sklaver Orenstein
Sibling loss. Not much has been written about it, no one really talks about it, or asks about your grief. Because quite often when a sibling dies, your parents are considered the ones in real grief, not you. So not only do others minimize your pain, but you also might minimize it too. Have you lost a sibling? Can you relate? Join Amanda and guest Annie Sklaver Orenstein, qualitative researcher, oral historian, and storyteller for a candid look into what it means to mourn a sibling. Listen as they acknowledge and honor your story and validate your pain. Key points to listen for include: Annie's loss of her beloved brother, Ben, and her experience with sibling loss The reason Annie wrote her book, Always a Sibling: The Forgotten Mourner's Guide to Grief. Annie's experience interviewing 40 siblings for her book and how every single one minimized their grief and why The importance of knowing someone else feels the way you do, why storytelling matters The idea that grief is a gift, and the mindset shift necessary to perceive your greatest loss in this light Tools to not only cope, but also to grow through your grieving process Signs from your loved one, how they are still alive energetically, and how to use this belief as a way to continue your relationship About Annie Annie Sklaver Orenstein is a qualitative researcher, oral historian, and storyteller who has spent over a decade collecting stories from people around the world. Her work has been featured on NBC Nightly News, Comedy Central, Huffington Post, Politico, TIME, and Mother.ly. In 2020, driven by a desire to share these stories beyond the walls of corporate America, Annie founded Dispatch from Daybreak, a collection of letters written by women to their earlier selves. She lives in Connecticut with her husband, children, dog, and chickens. About the book In ALWAYS A SIBLING: The Forgotten Mourner's Guide to Grief, Annie uses her own story and those of others to create the empathic, thoughtful, practical resource that she sought. Divided into three sections: With, Without, and Within, it creates framework that enables the reader to ground themselves in order to process and validate this often-overlooked grief. Annie guides readers to capture the memories and emotions of life with their now-deceased sibling, then moves to addressing the grieving process in detail as they navigate life without them. Ultimately, readers will find ways to experience their sibling's presence within themselves and acknowledge their legacy. In addition to Jessica's powerful and important story, other insightful and interesting conversation centers around: Creating "micro doses of hope," joy, and "corners of beauty" in moments when it's extremely hard to do so. Having a realistic perspective of hope and what is actually possible and achievable, so you don't feel constantly defeated and in despair. How to show up vulnerably in challenging, fragile, and painful situations. The importance of parents showing their emotions to their children in order to normalize difficult feelings. How to help children navigate their own big feelings during a time of crisis and grief. The "and/both" concept: living in both grief and joy simultaneously is possible. It's less about what you say and more about the actions you take when helping someone through their grieving process. About Jessica Author of Breath Taking: A Memoir of Family, Dreams, and Broken Genes and host of the I Don't Know How You Do It podcast, which features real, raw, and rare conversations with people whose lives seem unimaginable from the outside. S3E6 Permisson to Grieve with Rachel Garcia
Do you feel like your grief needs to be validated in order to mourn? Do you judge your loss as worthy before you allow yourself to feel it? Have you considered other manifestations of grief aside from death (aka ambiguous loss), one of the most common being divorce? Join Amanda and her very affable, fun guest, Rachel Garcia as they discuss the importance of giving yourself permission to grieve, focusing on the grief of divorce and how it can be a catalyst for deep healing, one which prompted Rachel to start her podcast, The Grief Informed Podcast. The ladies talk about what grief looks like after divorce but that's not all. They also dive into: Acknowledging, accepting, and embracing the fact that you are affected by certain losses, big and small What it means to be "grief informed" How to attune to your needs when you feel triggered by past trauma and loss Coming back into "contact" with your higher self and heart when you feel yourself dissociating from your grief How to create a nonjudgmental and compassionate space within in order to feel safe enough to grieve You cannot receive the support you need if you aren't willing to be vulnerable, and much more. About Rachel A single working mom with four teenagers in Birmingham, AL, Rachel worked as a Doula and Childbirth Educator for 10 years and dabbled in life coaching. She found her niche for this season of life through having long form conversations about the ways we are each affected by grief and the ways in which we can better show up for ourselves and for others in that sacred practice. Rachel lost both of her parents at a young age, faced early childhood trauma, and understood grief through bereavement. But it was divorce that taught her another level of grief she wasn't quite prepared for! It was this grief that inspired her to start and host her podcast, The Grief Informed Podcast. S3E1 Navigating Grief in Sobriety with Corey Hennings
How do you deal with loss and grief in sobriety? Who and what do you turn to while navigating some of life's toughest challenges? And how do secondary mental illnesses play a part in a person's ability to stay sober for the long haul? Join Amanda and her guest Corey Hennings, host of The Sober By Design Podcast, to hear Corey's personal experience with staying sober through the loss of his mother and brother, two profound deaths that occurred within three years. Learn the tools Corey used (and still uses) to not only stay sober, but to increase his overall mental health and emotional well-being in good times and bad. A good example of two people who practice different methods of recovery yet find common ground to meet on, this diplomatic conversation drives home the immense value and benefit of life in sobriety regardless of one's individual path. Key points they touch on include: Removing alcohol is the first step to figuring out the emotional turmoil that is going on underneath the addiction. Addiction is a mental illness classified in the DSM-5 and when coupled with another mental illness such as bipolar disorder, depression, and anxiety, staying sober can be exponentially challenging. How connecting with other alcoholics was the foundation of Corey's recovery program in the early days of his sobriety. The challenge of watching a loved one progress in their illness and feeling powerless to help them. The importance of music and how it can be like a time machine, transporting you back to indelible memories and moments in life. (Listen for Corey and Amanda's picks that remind them of their loved ones!) Corey Hennings dedicates his show, The Sober by Design Podcast, to helping others live a full life in recovery. S2E16 Divided We Fall
Returning to the roots of the show, Amanda (in her first solo episode) discusses the dire need for connection right now and provides great tools and tips for sidestepping the emotional booby traps many of us find ourselves in while dealing with our own heightened emotions as well as the heightened emotions of others surrounding the current political climate. Some of the important points she addresses include: The danger of Common Enemy Effect: The psychological phenomenon when people bond over a shared opponent or issue even if they have nothing else in common, producing a false sense of connection. A new take on WE the people and how we will only find peace by working together. The necessity to take accountability for how we are each individually contributing to the problem with self-centered perceptions and divisive behaviors. How crucial it is for leaders and healers to not check out but to take a break when needed. The effects of being constantly triggered with visuals of violence that are commonplace now but were not in the past. Emotional immaturity and a lack of empathy are two root causes of the division. Addictive chemicals are released when we feel "right" and breaking this addiction will require immense amounts of commitment and discipline. The political division we are experiencing is a facade of the much larger issue of human survival, and how our energy holds the power to deliver us to harmony. How to apply the 12 steps of Alcoholics Anonymous to heal the division. Four great phrases to use when you do not want to engage in a contentious conversation. A beautiful mantra to immediately shift the focus from blaming someone to addressing what needs to be changed within you. Please share this with someone you think may need it. S2E15 The Holy Grail of Wellness with Hope Pedraza
Have you been on a healing journey for a while and still feel like something is missing? Are you still struggling after years of working on yourself? Perhaps it's because you've been treating only one part of the problem instead of all the parts. Join Amanda and Hope Pedraza, Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner, Certified Holistic Nutritionist, Reiki Practitioner, Human Design guide, NLP Practitioner and Hypnotherapist for a fascinating conversation where they uncover the secret to experience whole healing: treating all parts of you—body, mind, and spirit—simultaneously with energy healing, rewiring neural pathways, and nutrition. They also spend a significant amount of time talking about hormones and your innate power to balance them. Other key points to listen for include: What presents on the surface (overweight, depressed, tired) are symptoms of the root cause. You will never truly heal until you address the root cause. 5 things to limit in your diet to reduce inflammation. The concept of cycle-syncing—knowing which phase of your menstrual cycle you are in and living in accordance with your natural cadence to maximize productivity and creativity. Hormone imbalance happens when we are pushing ourselves to do things the body is not aligned with. This creates stress. Cortisol is released, adrenals become overworked, and hormones become unbalanced. Listening to your body and honoring what it needs at certain times of the month is the first step to balancing hormones. The minerals you need in your food and supplements to support a healthy body. Where to get protein if you are interested in a vegetarian or vegan diet. What Human Design is and how to utilize it to break subconscious patterns and optimize your life-force energy. The importance of rewiring and regulating the nervous system to allow for a new pattern in thinking. Hope Pedraza is also the founder of inBalance, a Pilates based fitness franchise and the host of the Hopeful and Wholesome podcast. She helps female entrepreneurs and leaders heal chronic symptoms, optimizing their energy and wellness with functional labs, Human Design, subconscious reprogramming and energetics so they can thrive and create more impact in their business and in life. S2E14 Keeping an Open Heart After Loss
06/21/2024
S2E14 Keeping an Open Heart After Loss
How do you keep an open heart after heartbreak, grief, trauma, and other painful experiences knowing that more pain is on the way? How do we love others fully and completely and lay bare the most vulnerable parts of ourselves knowing that loss is inevitable? Ginny and Amanda divulge their own difficulty with this topic, especially Amanda, calling it the "bane of her existence!" The ladies talk openly and candidly about their own experiences with shutting down after traumatic loss and provide excellent tools for you to practice while moving through your own fear of future loss. Other conversation includes: Connection is the cure for grief, addiction, and other difficult trials of life. Brene Brown's concept "foreboding joy," the definition of it and what happens when we do not allow ourselves to feel joy because we are in fear it will end. Fear of loss is rooted in childhood through emotional abandonment, and we spend the rest of our lives trying to never feel that again. Even though abandonment is something many of us are afraid of, we push people away due to an inability to be emotionally intimate with others (a protection method we used in childhood to keep us safe). It's selfish to keep ourselves in this fear, thereby, inhibiting true connection and love with those who love us. The solution is meeting, knowing, and loving ourselves unconditionally through connecting with source energy (God, Spirit, Universe) so we know deep in our heart we are never truly alone. Limiting our dreams and wishes by throwing up roadblocks and other self-sabotaging behaviors because we are afraid of rejection (aka loss). Breathwork to calm and reset the nervous system as a pathway to reducing stress accompanied by fear of loss. S2E10 Stumbling Into Authenticity
How do you know if you are being authentic? What does it feel like to show up as your true self in all situations regardless of the risk of being judged or losing a relationship? And have you explored your authenticity through the lens of your internal emotional response rather than how you present to the world? Amanda & Ginny take the authenticity conversation to a much deeper level, beyond your outward expression of self and into what it means to be true to your heart. They also explore: Tools for stepping into your authenticity and maintaining it, such as consciously and consistently checking motives for your behavior. How to change your conditioned response to things when feeling misaligned. The moment you suddenly realize you don't have to work so hard at being authentic because you finally are authentic. Authenticity may feel strange at first because you aren't used to it. Changing "the dance moves" in a relationship, and how the other person may try different ways to keep dancing the way they are used to because its familiar to them. Why we stay in unhealthy relationships even though they are painful. Unlearning old programming to embrace the real you. The importance of being mindful of how you truly feel in situations instead of reacting out of muscle memory. And so much more! S2E9 Next Level Self-Care with Marsha C.
How do you define self-care? Many of us know it goes beyond a girls night out or a spa day. Many of us also know self-care involves boundary setting, or not being a people-pleaser. But have you considered self-care in terms of the choices you make and how the ramifications of that choice affect you? Or the resentment you may hold against yourself for making that choice. Join Amanda and her guest, Marsha C., Spiritual Midwife and host of Her Sacred Soul Space Podcast, for a next-level discussion on the inconspicuous ways we choose to show ourselves love through self-care, as well as the ways in which we unconsciously choose to hurt ourselves because our self-worth is suffering. We also talk about: Loving all the parts of you, not just the ones you judge as good The importance of a holistic self-care perspective How self-resentment can show us how to make a better decision the next time because we are more aligned with our truth Reaching the place where we truly want to take care of ourselves and the small ways we do that (which are not really small at all!). Marsha's shroom journey and how she healed her inner child How self-worth is a prerequisite for self-care Marsha helps women who are in their birthing season, especially those who are breast cancer survivors and have a hard time accepting their new normal. She teaches them how to spiritually reconnect with themselves so they can have a soul-centered (mind, body, spirit) transformation. Marsha uses several wellness methodologies garnered during her personal journey with breast cancer to help women discover and birth their purpose. The book Marsha talks about is called The Game of Life and How to Play It by Florence Scovel Shinn. S2E8 The Many Faces of Grief

S2E8 The Many Faces of Grief
What do you think of when you hear the word grief? The death of a loved one, a pet, a divorce? Grief manifests in so many ways other than death, such as moving, your children's stages of development, losing a friendship or a wish about how you want something to be. And have you considered why it's so hard to let go, even of the things we know are not good for us? Join Amanda & Ginny as they journey into all things grief. Understand how to spot it and move through it in a way that serves your personal development. Other ideas they unpack are: The biggest form of loss we do not recognize as loss is change...any change, good or "bad." The importance of recognizing and processing smaller, daily losses so your pain doesn't come out sideways and hurt others. Loss is just as much a part of life as love and if we cannot embrace feelings of loss and grief, we cannot embrace feelings of love and joy. Authenticity, and following your soul calling, can be difficult because we fear a lack of approval or acceptance, which brings feeling of loss. Being okay if someone chooses to withhold their love from you because you've made a decision they don't agree with. Honoring all the parts of us, especially the dark parts, as a pathway forward through grief. Resistance to loss happens because it reminds us of childhood emotional abandonment.
