Grit and Classics with James McGibbon
We’ve saved the best for last in this final episode of Season One of Enriched. This week we’re sitting down with James McGibbon, current Princeton student and complete renaissance man. From homeschooling, to traveling the Eastern seaboard with his seven siblings in a church van, to studying the Classics, James’ story is anything but your run-of-the-mill Ivy League success story. There is so much to learn here about grit - yes, that buzz word really does apply here - and even more importantly, about what true passion for academic inquiry looks like. With a bit of humor and an abundance of quirks, James is sure to captivate. Bilbo Baggins meets James Bond in this American fairy tale. What Should Your Child Be Reading?

What Should Your Child Be Reading?
Hey There Listeners! This week’s episode piggy backs off of last week’s, where we talked about WHEN your child should be reading. This week, we are going to talk about WHAT your child should be reading. So many parents come to us and ask for great book recommendations. The market for children’s books is incredibly saturated. How do you know what will be a stay-up-all-night-until-I-finish-it book versus a gather-dust-on-the-shelf book? We have read thousands of children’s books, in the classroom, at home with our children, and in our Enriched offices with our students. We know what gets a little person’s engine going and have culled together a list of best reads for ages 5-10…just in time for the holidays! Consider this our gift: You can give just the right book - the gift that keeps on giving - and put it into the hands of your little ones with just a few short clicks below. That’s right, not only do we tell you about each read we recommend in the pod, but we’ve linked access to the books mentioned in this episode in our show notes. Yes, we love you that much. Listen to find out about some amazing page turners! Episode reading list: Penguin Young Readers: Henry and Mudge Series: James Marshall Fox Books: Bunnicula Early Readers: Oliver and Amanda Pig Series: Froggy Series: Cam Jansen Series: Cowgirl Kate and Cocoa Series: Frances Learn to Read Series: Ivy and Bean Series: Heidi Hecklebeck Series: Dory Fantasmagory Series: Judy Moody Series: Mery Watson Series: Roald Dahl Series: Beverly Cleary Book List: Andrew Clements Series: Louis Sacher Wayside School Books: Who Was Book Series:

When Should Your Childe Be Reading?

When Should Your Childe Be Reading?
Welcome to this week’s episode of Enriched, where we answer one of the most common questions we hear as educators: when should my child be reading? The short answer is around 5 or 6, but there’s more to it than that. Gender, home environment, school environment, and differing rates of brain development all play a role. There are three key areas of the brain required for reading, and if any of these are in any way impaired or not developed yet, your child will not be able to read fluidly. So as you can see, this question is a bit like the iceberg - you are often just seeing the tip. But, no matter where your child is in the reading continuum, there are many things you can do as a parent to facilitate your child on this incredible journey. What are they? Find out in this episode the pod…So sit back and take notes on how to support your child as he or she gets ready to read! Resources:

An Interview With Ivy Leaguer Leyla Giordano
Welcome to Enriched, a podcast dedicated to parents and caregivers who care about education. Today we embark on our Ivy League Admissions series, where we interview current Ivy League students and hear about their educational journeys right to the top. We start at the very beginning - those early childhood years - and hear about the pivotal experiences with family, friends, and, of course, school, that helped shaped these young people into successful young adults. Today’s guest is Leyla Giordano, a “survivor” of the Trinity School, an elite prep school located on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. BUT lest you think this story is one of privilege, listen closely. Leyla talks about the elbow grease she put in to her academics, her true passion for helping children learn the Classics, and having to make sacrifices with extracurriculars to keep her head in the game. Take a listen to hear Leyla’s journey and the personal qualities that shepherded her through her 12 year journey to Brown University.
