Oakland Belonging: Voices of Swan's Market

How do we reflect past, present, and future stories into the world around us? How does embodying stories into the environment increase a sense of belonging? Chapter 510, a made-in-Oakland youth writing, bookmaking, and publishing center, set out to explore these ambitious questions with a group of seven curious high school students in January 2022. Thus began a nine-month exploration of Swan’s Market, an Oakland landmark with a rich history. Credits: Youth producers: Karol Suarez, Phoebe Lefebvre, Olivia Richardson Feldman, Citlali Sanchez Udovic, Isis Pascual, Leila McCullough, and Fernando Barrera Editing and sound engineering: Alicia Crawford Lead teaching artist: Elena Botkin-Levy Teaching artist: Vernon “Trey” Keeve Program and community manager: Marabet Morales Program Director: Jahan Khalighi This podcast, published by The Oaklandside, was made possible with support from the Golden State Warriors Foundation and Bridge Bank. The Chapter 510 storytelling initiative was supported by grants from California Humanities and Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.
