Interview with Dr. Alisha Guthery: From Surviving to Healing: A Conversation on Safety, Presence & Healing
04/24/2025
Interview with Dr. Alisha Guthery: From Surviving to Healing: A Conversation on Safety, Presence & Healing
In this episode, we explore the heart of trauma work—not by focusing solely on the events themselves, but on the lasting impact they leave in our bodies. Trauma disconnects us from the present moment, often leaving us feeling unsafe in our own lives. But what if healing begins with reclaiming our ability to be fully present? Together, we’ll talk about how practicing presence can gently rewire the effects of trauma and expand our sense of safety—one moment at a time. Whether the trauma is political, interpersonal, or institutional, the common thread is the loss of safety and connection. This episode is an invitation to begin rebuilding those foundations, slowly and kindly, from the inside out. KEY TAKEAWAYS It's about really understanding and kind of figuring out the parts of your life that you are escaping because of the trauma. Practice doing something differently and notice how you feel. When we have our trauma lens on, we see what the trauma allows us to see, and we don't see anything else. We don't see the possibility or the opportunity. Everything survivors do is the skill of surviving. Sometimes surviving works against our ability to imagine. I call it being cloaked. If you weren't cloaked, then you would have to see. And it's so painful to see. Generational trauma is through missed opportunity of connection. So, because I was traumatized, I was now lost in attunement to my child. And so, it's missed opportunity of connection, missed opportunity of regulation, missed opportunity of co-regulation, missed opportunity of deep attunement to a child who really deserves all my attention. And when I am too traumatized to be able to attune, then the impact on them is great on their nervous system. And so to me, that's one way through attachment, that's one way that that trauma continues. Because now I've reshaped my child's nervous system by not attuning. Well, and then the great thing that we also have just as humans is the ability to continue to grow, have neuroplasticity, nothing is ever not changeable, really. BEST MOMENTS That stubborn decision — to keep getting up — saved me more times than I can count. Life life’s all the time. Even under the best of circumstances, it's stressful. I wonder if you could imagine that you’re not the problem. We are here to care for and be in relationship with others. Designed for Hope: Interview with Jon Tunheim
We can choose hope regardless of the environment we are in. We are wired and designed to be hopeful! We are wired to use our imagination to look at our future and create memories of that future and then think strategically about how to achieve our future goals. Hope is contagious too! We can connect with other hopeful people. Those that are always looking positively at the future and openly talking about - and chasing - their goals. It’s inspiring. And transfers hope – we become more hopeful by engaging with them. We learn how to be hopeful by watching them. Thanks Jon Tunheim for your wisdom and insights! KEY TAKEAWAYS Hope is a choice. Here are the steps: See the future Set a goal Create strategies and pathways to move towards the goal Vary the pathway according to the obstacles you meet Use motivation and willpower to move forward and achieve that goal BEST MOMENTS It is hard to be a narcissist when you learn young that hope is believing in yourself, believing in others, and believing in your dreams. –Chan Hellman and Casey Gwinn Hope is not a step in life, it is a stance. BEST MOMENTS Amazong quotes from Molly in this episode: “I definitely had a knowing.” “It’s not until we fully acknowledge that pattern that we’re able to hopefully break our way out of it.” “It’s gonna have to get a little bit uncomfortable to get out of that pattern.” “If this is a cycle that keeps continuining, do you wanna give it one year of your life? Breaking Free: Ditch Limiting Beliefs & Fear for Good
Your mindset can be impacted by limiting beliefs, fear and anxiety. Discover tips and tricks to change your limiting beliefs and mitigate or minimize your fear and anxiety so you can shift your mindset and achieve your dreams! We choose our mindset, and it’s much easier to do when we let go of our limiting beliefs and release our fears! KEY TAKEAWAYS Quick ways to reduce fear and anxiety which will help improve mindset. Focus on your breathing – breathing deeply compels our body to physically calm itself. Make sure that your exhale is longer than your inhale. Journal/write – keep track of how you are feeling/experiencing your fear for a couple of weeks. What patterns emerge? Writing the details down can help demystify your fears, thereby making them more manageable. Practice mindfulness – use what you learned in writing about your fears to become aware of your fears. Observe. Being passive raises your self-awareness and prevents you from doing the things you typically do when feeling the fear. Get out into nature – talk a walk outside. Being in nature is calming, reduces stress, and changes our moods, which all helps to shift our mindset. BEST MOMENTS Unease, anxiety, tension, stress, worry -- all forms of fear -- are caused by too much future, and not enough presence. –Eckhart Tolle We must build dikes of courage to hold back the flood of fear. – Martin Luther King Jr. The more you study delight, the more delight there is to study...I felt my life to be more full of delight. Not without sorrow or fear or pain or loss. But more full of delight. – Ross Gay In the stillness of the quiet, if we listen, we can hear the whisper of the heart giving strength to weakness, courage to fear, hope to despair. – Howard Thurman VALUABLE RESOURCES If you’re struggling in a relationship and wondering if it might be controlling, you’re not alone. Embracing Anger: How to Harness Its Purpose and Power

Embracing Anger: How to Harness Its Purpose and Power
We are taught that anger is “bad”. It’s not! No emotion or feeling is bad. They all have a purpose and anger is no different. Anger is often the surface emotion of a feeling or feelings that we’re feeling under the surface. So don’t be afraid of your anger. That said, don’t hide from it either. What is happening that is making you feel angry? Let your anger tell you what’s happening underneath your other emotions. Let your anger help you take the action you need to change what isn’t working in your life. KEY TAKEAWAYS Anger is a secondary emotion. The primary underlying emotions for anger are fear, loss, sadness, and shame. There are three main approaches to manage your anger: Express your anger in a healthy, assertive way; not aggressively. Suppress your anger, again in a positive way, where you convert your anger – i.e. – take a positive action – or redirect it and focus on something positive. Use calming techniques to calm down internally, like breathing techniques. BEST MOMENTS Where there is anger, there is always pain underneath. -Eckhart Tolle Anger is a sign that something needs to change. – unknown Holding on to anger is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die. -Buddha It’s a lot easier to be angry at someone than it is to tell them you’re hurt. -Tom Gates Tears of despair can be fuel. Thunders of anger can be light. -Maxime Legace Anger expressed in a healthy and positive way means that we channel emotional anger towards resolution not attack. -Byron R. Your narcissist thrives on gaslighting you. That leads you to look “crazy” or paranoid, both to yourself and others. Because narcissists are so good at wearing their masks, it takes time to figure out what you’re dealing with, and then takes time and strategy to show others what’s really happening. Our legal and family court systems are not equipped to identify or handle extreme narcissists. Finally, there are 8 types of post separation abuse (from Tina Swithin). I encourage you to learn more about them so you can protect yourself, or support someone going through it! KEY TAKEAWAYS There is hope! From Chaos to Clarity: Understanding and Managing Emotions
There is a difference between our emotions and feelings. The six fundamental emotions are happiness, sadness, fear, disgust, anger, and surprise. Our emotions are like the engine of the car, so it’s really important that we keep our emotional engine tuned and healthy. When we aren’t aware of our emotions it can cause serious issues in our lives. KEY TAKEAWAYS Acknowledge your emotions Accept your emotions Build your resilience Increase your hope level for a happier, more fulfilling life BEST MOMENTS Emotions are energy. Energy wants to move. When stuck emotions cause stress, it’s the energy asking you to help it move. –Unknown True emotional healing doesn’t happen without feeling. The only way out is through. Jessica Moore We cannot selectively numb emotions, when we numb the painful emotions, we also numb the positive emotions. –Brene Brown I don’t want to be at the mercy of my emotions. I want to use them, to enjoy them, and to dominate them. –Oscar Wilde The idea that you have to be protected from any kind of uncomfortable emotion is what I absolutely do not subscribe to. –John Cleese Your emotions make you human. Even the unpleasant ones have a purpose. Don’t lock them away. If you ignore them, they just get louder and angrier. –Sabaa Tahir VALUABLE RESOURCES If you’re struggling in a relationship and wondering if it might be controlling, you’re not alone.
