147. 5 Keys to Staying Miserable on the Golf Course with The Par Train Dudes
08/24/2024
147. 5 Keys to Staying Miserable on the Golf Course with The Par Train Dudes
What a fun episode we have today with Evan Singer and Matt Cermak from The Par Train podcast joining us. We are filling you in on 5 ways you can be miserable on the golf course – this is a must-listen! Key Highlights: Expecting what you do on the range to happen on the course. A warm-up is just that: a warm-up. Your best swing or putt is an outlier, not an average. Trying to shoot your best score. When was the last time you actually shot your best score when you “tried” to shoot your best score? Don’t reinvent a past victory. Instead, recommit to earn a new victory. That is, don’t look at the finish line. Focus instead on the process—the journey—that will result in a win. Trying to impress others. Since we’re only human, we can’t help but care what others think; but, when we let the opinions of others influence our performance on the golf course, we end up doing worse than if we just put aside that insecurity. Assume you won’t make mistakes. Just because your last round was perfect doesn’t mean this round will be perfect. Golf is a game of recovery. Don’t get too high, and don’t get too low. Take care not to rest on your laurels after every good shot and beat yourself up after every bad shot. If you get too high, you create unnecessary pressure on yourself come the next swing; and if you get too low, you gradually lose the confidence and motivation to go on. 142. Distance Series: HOW to Get the Distance You Want with Lisa Longball
Justin Klemballa and I sit down with 8-time Canadian long drive champion Lisa Longball. Together, we unpack the three primary mistakes stopping women from gaining more distance in their golf swing and how to fix them! We also discuss Lisa's personal training schedule, why muscle memory is way more important than muscular strength, and the vital role of rest in achieving peak performance. We also explore the significance of tempo and having a mental routine alongside a physical one. Lisa shares her insightful personal experiences as a world-class athlete, including her triumph of hitting the longest drive in women's golf history, and what she did to gain the highest swing speed she's ever achieved. 3 Reasons You Lack Distance in Your Swing (and What to Do Instead) (06:47) Reason 1: You’re an arms lifter. Because women are naturally more flexible than men, it’s easy to think you’re turning when you’re really just lifting your arms. Lisa recommends looking at your body in two parts: the upper body and the lower body. During the backswing, start with your lead shoulder, forcing you to turn your chest turning away from the ball. On the other hand, during the downswing, maximize the coil and torque you’ve built up by leading with your lower body. (09:25) Reason 2: Your golf swing sequence is flawed or lacking. “Turn the shirt” on the backswing, freeze, then “turn the skirt” on the downswing. The best way to make this sequence second nature is by practicing dissociation drills, as well as training to move your weight to the instep of the back foot when transitioning from the backswing to the downswing. (18:43) Reason 3: You don’t finish the golf swing. Most golfers put all their focus on hitting the ball, so that once they make contact, they begin to decelerate and fail to maximize distance as a result. Your clubhead should be at its fastest not on the ball, but three feet past the ball. Always keep this in mind: Hit through the ball, not to the ball. About the Guest: Lisa Longball is an 8-time Canadian long drive national champion and has finished as high as 2nd in the world. She is an LDA Tour champion and Callaway Golf sponsored athlete. In addition to her competitive career, Lisa is a Golf Journalist for several publications including Inside Golf Magazine and has had her own column in Golf Digest Canada. Lisa uses her vast experience as a World Class athlete to be a successful keynote Peak Performance Speaker at conferences and conventions, is a Golf Entertainer for many corporate/charity golf tournaments across North America including PGA Tour and Champions Tour events and runs her own Golf School for Women both in Canada and the United States. 140. Distance Series: WHY is Gaining Distance So Important with Lou Stagner
Could a mere 10 yards make all the difference in your golf game? Join us for the first of our three-part distance series as Lou Stagner and I discuss how gaining distance leads to lower scores! Drawing from 600 shots worth of data from the Arccos database, we break down real-world examples and insights showing the benefits of speed training and fitness programs aimed at boosting mobility and strength, giving you practical steps to add those vital extra yards. Imagine improving your strokes gained off the tee simply by increasing your driving distance by 5% year over year. 94% of golfers have done just that, and we're here to bust the myth that more distance means fewer fairways hit. With data from PGA Tour players since 1983, we discuss how speed training can actually enhance your swing mechanics, leading to straighter and more efficient shots. Our conversation shifts the focus from accuracy to the importance of avoiding penalties, to take your course management to the next level! Finally, Lou and I are talking custom-fitting and how homing in on your ideal club fit can improve your performance by leagues. From adjusting driver shafts to tweaking grip sizes, discover how minor changes can yield major improvements. 138. Taking on Course Management to Break 80 this Summer with Scott Fawcett of Decade Golf (Part 2)
I’m back with Scott Fawcett, founder of the DECADE Course Management System, to get the ins-and-outs of his unique approach to breaking 80 this summer! This time, we’re really getting into the weeds of course management strategy. Scott highlights the limitations of traditional stat tracking and the benefits of focusing on metrics that truly reflect your game, while examining the relationship between putting and overall scoring. We discuss the power of keeping a “mental scorecard” and why it’s so important to have a clear intention for each shot. For golfers averaging scores in the high 80s, tracking meaningful metrics like greens in regulation and redefining what constitutes a successful tee shot can lead to performance optimization. We dive into distance measurement next. Get Scott’s expert insights on using launch monitors with your specific golf ball to pinpoint true iron distances and eliminate outliers. Learn how PGA pros like Aaron Wise use this data to make strategic adjustments, leading to more consistent, reliable shots. 137. Taking on Course Management to Break 80 this Summer with Scott Fawcett of Decade Golf (Part 1)
In the first of this two-part conversation, I’m sitting down with Scott Fawcett, founder of the DECADE Course Management System, to learn his unique approach to playing golf with intention–beyond the swing. Listen in as Scott shares how the game's evolution places equal weight on both the mental and the physical, drawing parallels between golf and chess. Whether you're a club-level player or an aspiring pro, Scott’s Decade system offers a simplified approach to understanding the complexities of the game, helping you play smarter, not harder. We then take a deep dive into putting performance, breaking down the concepts of tracking putts and strokes gained. Discover the importance of walking off putt distances and why nailing long putts can dramatically impact your game. Professor Mark Broadie’s strokes gained method offers a nuanced, step-by-step approach that goes beyond just counting total putts. Scott and I end the first part of our discussion with our thoughts on the types of mental health challenges faced by golfers at all levels. We explore the emotional and psychological strains of the sport, using drawing on our personal experiences to highlight the importance of having a support system to keep you afloat. From Tiger Woods’ legendary mental resilience to the tragic story of Grayson Murray, we’re bringing to the surface the need for more mental health awareness in the golfing community. 131. How to Make Golf Easy with Justin Klemballa
Today, Justin Klemballa and I discuss the importance of smart decision-making on the course, showing that: while drills and strategy make a huge difference, a strong mental game often trumps technique in shaving strokes off your score. Ever found yourself floundering in a fairway bunker? Justin spills the secrets to training the often-neglected bunker shot even if you lack access to a venue that allows you to practice them effectively. We talk about turning recreational rounds into practice sessions, and why aiming for bogey might just be your ticket to a lower scorecard. Justin gives his thoughts on greenside bunker play and breaks down a simple yet effective bunker drill to improve your game before you even set foot on the course. As the overseeding period comes to an end and anticipation for the winter season mounts, it’s important to ensure you’ve sharpened your game. I give an inside look into my own practice schedule and talk about the need for a well-thought-out plan and a balance between swing, short game, and putting practice. 125. A Practice Plan for the Busy Golfer with In the Zone Secrets, Bo Watson and Shannon Shuskey
I’m sitting down with Bo Watson and Shannon Shuskey, whose book In the Zone Secrets unlocks the profound connection between the mind and athletic performance. Listen in as we explore the mental strategies and techniques that can take your golf game to the next level, even when you’re off the green. From the concept of “caveman golf” to harnessing the power of mental imagery and entering the “zone,” Bo and Shannon prove that mastering your mind might just be that missing link between where you are now and where you want to be. Bo and Shannon also offer practical advice on how busy players can optimize their game in as little as 30 minutes a day, leveraging the creativity of the right brain for optimal performance. They talk about how mental imagery not only assists in skill improvement but also serves as a tool for managing tournament anxiety. About In the Zone Mental Training: In The Zone Mental Training is the world's first mental program backed by science that helps athletes get into the zone at a flip of a switch. Shannon Shuskey’s accidental discovery of these training principles in the 90s led him to go from a struggling skater to becoming a National Champion and Record Holder. When Bo Watson met with Shannon in the Summer of 2018 and learned the reason behind the success of his system, he wanted to see if it could work for golf too. To test it, he went out and played a total of 8 rounds in 2018 cold turkey (no practice between). The result was 6 out of the 8 rounds were under par and the last round was 9 holes where he shot 4 under with 3 lip out birdies. 120. 6 Myths About Golf Performance with Dr. Raymond Prior
Today, I'm sitting down with Dr. Raymond Prior, author of "Golf Beneath the Surface: The New Science of Golf Psychology", with the aim of understanding the mechanics of our mind and how emotions can transform our approach to the game and our performance on the course. Through the breakdown of six myths around performance on the golf course, we deconstruct the common misinterpretations surrounding growth, stress, anxiety, and nerves, and discuss the role of mindfulness, willpower, and survival instincts in our decision-making process.
