FNP 250 : The Science of Winning: Mental Management with Steve Anderson
Over the past ten years, Steve Anderson, a USPSA Grand Master and the host of “That Shooting Show,” has observed several notable trends and developments among his students as he teaches mental management in practical shooting: Increased Focus on Mental Skills: Anderson has noted a significant shift in how shooters perceive the importance of the mental game in shooting sports. More students are now recognizing that mental preparation can be as crucial as physical skills. He emphasizes concepts like match mode versus speed or accuracy modes, which are often discussed on his podcast and in his classes. Application of Mental Management Systems: Being certified in Lanny Bassham’s “Mental Management Systems,” Anderson applies these principles to shooting, helping students understand how mental preparation can lead to better performance. This includes teaching shooters how to manage their thoughts after practice or matches to reinforce positive outcomes rather than dwell on negatives, which is a recurring theme in his teachings. Transformation in Student Performance: Anderson has seen students who, after attending his mental management seminars or classes, experience significant improvements in their competitive performance. His students often report going from average performers to winning major competitions or achieving higher classifications like Grandmaster after adopting these mental strategies. The feedback from students highlights the practical application of his teachings, with some even attributing their competitive successes directly to these mental techniques. Ongoing Learning and Adaptation: The community of practical shooters is dynamic, with continuous learning being a key aspect. Anderson sees that his students are not just taking one class; many return for repeated sessions or explore different facets of the mental game, indicating a deep commitment to mastering this aspect of shooting. This ongoing engagement has also led to a culture where shooters share and learn from each other’s experiences, further fueled by Anderson’s podcast episodes. Mental Game as a Competitive Edge: There’s a growing understanding among competitors that mastering the mental aspects can provide a substantial edge over others who might focus solely on physical skills. Anderson’s teachings have helped demystify how mental preparation can lead to consistency under pressure, which is vital in practical shooting sports. Steve Anderson’s work has not only influenced individual shooters but has also contributed to a broader cultural shift in how mental management is approached in shooting sports, making it a cornerstone of competitive training.

FNP 236 : She Was Shot 10 Times and Still Won the Gunfight! - Jennifer Fulford Replay
It's been four years since this episode came out and I wanted to share it again. As a young officer I remember when this shooting happened and was always amazed at how well Jennifer handled herself and won a gunfight with multiple suspects. Lots of great lessons learned for officers and well as anyone who carry a gun for self defense. Jennifer Fulford was a deputy sheriff back in 2004 when she went to a suspicious incident call. A child on the phone was stating strange men were in the house and on arrival she met up with the female homeowner who was acting strange. It turned out three men were inside committing an armed home invasion. Jennifer got into a gunfight with two of the men and despite being shot multiple times, she was able to take out both suspects. The third suspect gave up. Jennifer went on to have a career in law enforcement and now talks to other officers on how to survive critical events. Kerry Davis is the man behind Dark Angel Medical. His company not only sells tourniquets, chest seals and pressure bandages, but pushes out a ton of training. In Kerry’s mind, everyone should have a tourniquet and get the necessary training. In this podcast we discuss if tourniquets are still important considering in active shooter situations, most of the victims are being shot in the chest area and head, not the extremities. FNP 234 : Police Brief One - How to Spot Police Impersonators
I’ve always wanted to do some podcast episodes to discuss some of the stuff I’ve learned over 20 years as a law enforcement officer. Some of the topics will be safety related, while some will be more of a historical and trivia related to police work. Of course, if you have any questions please email me and I’ll do my best to cover it. This episode is dealing with police impersonators. Yes, they are out there. How do you deal with getting pulled over by one: Recognizing the Situation Police impersonators can be a real danger, and knowing how to react is key. If you’re pulled over by someone you suspect is not a legitimate police officer, the first step is to stay calm and assess the situation. Remember, you have the right to ensure your safety. Pull Over Safely If you’re unsure about the legitimacy of the vehicle attempting to pull you over, don’t stop immediately. Instead, put on your hazard lights, slow down, and signal your intent to pull over. Choose a well-lit, populated area to stop, like a gas station or a busy parking lot. Observe the Vehicle A real police vehicle will be clearly marked, often with the department’s logo, proper lighting, and an array of emergency lights. Impersonators may use unmarked vehicles or vehicles with insufficient lighting. Take note of these details. Contact Police Dispatch When in doubt, call 911 or your local police dispatch to verify the situation. Explain your concerns and ask if there is a legitimate officer in your vicinity conducting a traffic stop. Dispatchers will guide you on what to do next. Your safety should always be your top priority. If the person claiming to be an officer doesn’t display proper identification or behaves inappropriately, trust your instincts. You can request a marked patrol car and uniformed officer to arrive at the scene before proceeding.

FNP 227 : Isaac Lockwood - The Man Working to Shoot 6 Shots in Under One Second
Have you ever wanted to shoot fast? Or get better at your Bill Drills? Do you know what a Bill Drill is? That’s 6 shots at 7 yards landing them in the A-zone of a USPSA target. The standard goal is all 6 in under 2 seconds. That is speed and accuracy. Competitive shooter Isaac Lockwood is going for supersonic. 6 shots in under a second. He is close. At last year’s Bill Drill Challenge at Nationals, he did the 6 shots in 1.23 seconds. This weekend he goes back to Carry Optics Nationals and will face the winner of this year’s challenge. Isaac thinks he can do it. Isaac is a former law enforcement officer from California who now shoots and teaches all the time. He also is a pro staff member of Howitzer Clothing and shares that position with shooting greats such as JJ Racaza and Max Michel. In this episode, you hear: –How Isaac is able to get the shots off in such a short amount of time. –How Isaac prepares for a National Championship. –What Isaac practices when he goes to the range. FNP 225 : HOW TO IMPROVE YOUR SKILLS WITH DON REDL’S FORCE ON FORCE TRAINING
In force-on-force training, participants engage in simulated scenarios where they face opposition from other individuals or teams. These scenarios involve using non-lethal training ammunition, such as paintball rounds or simulated munitions, to replicate the effects of real weapons without causing fatal injuries. The training can take place in various settings, including indoor facilities, outdoor environments, or purpose-built training grounds. Force-on-force training offers several benefits, including: Realistic decision-making: Participants have to make split-second decisions under pressure, simulating the cognitive demands of actual operational situations. Stress inoculation: By exposing participants to simulated high-stress situations, force-on-force training helps them develop the ability to perform effectively and make sound decisions under duress. Tactical proficiency: The training allows participants to practice and refine their tactical skills, including movement, communication, and target engagement, in a dynamic and interactive setting. My guest today is Don Redl who is a certified instructor in Force on Force from Simunition (General Dynamics.) Don was also a competitive shooter and runs a security/executive protection company, Executive Options for over two decades. He teaches Force on Force as well as different tactical shooting classes. Don is the author of several books including his latest “Force of Force”. Finally, Don is an expert witness in many training accidents that often go to court. In this podcast you’ll learn: –What it’s like to go on an executive protection assignment. –How to incorporate Force on Force into your training program to round out your skillset. –What steps to take to make sure you’re safe in Force on Force training. FNP 224 : Adam Haidary - Inside Look: How Adam Haidary is Helping Police Fight and Survive
Adam Haidary is a former police training sergeant and spent seven years in law enforcement. One of the things he realized, was that police officers often had a hard time dealing with combative subjects and weren’t really trained on how to do it. Old-style control techniques that were not pressure tested, would fail and the situation could easily escalate to deadly force. Adam created Effective Fitness Training and Effective Fitness Combatives to solve these issues. The programs utilize Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu with the use of a firearm as well as various fitness challenges to keep officers in shape. His company works with police departments around the nation and he has a solid cadre of instructors. Adam also has a massive Instagram page called Police Posts . This page is filled with body cam footage and other videos that show critical incidents (from fights to shootings) that are debriefed. The purpose is not to draw criticism of the officer’s actions but to have an open training dialogue about how the incident could have gone better and lessons learned. In this episode, you’ll hear: –How Adam started his programs after seeing the problems in police training. –Why BJJ is a great tool for law enforcement and why all officers should train. –What is the number one killer of police officers.
