Episode 166: St. Augustine Experiences, the Craft Beer Tour
For this week's episode, we are in the nation's oldest city, St Augustine. It has no shortage of tours to take, from the near ubiquitous trams to an overwhelming plethora of ghost tours each evening. Very few take a look at both the history of the city and the amazing things that are going on right now. St. Augustine Experiences is different. Their founder, Alex Drywa, has crafted a number of fantastic tours that obviously look at the history, but also take a look at some of the amazing things that are happening right now. One of those tours looks exclusively at beer, as St. Augustine has been enjoying a resurgence as of late. We spoke to Alex after taking his Craft Beer tour about the history of beer in St. Augustine, his experiences as a tour guide, and enjoying St. Augustine's growing beer (and foodie) scene. Their flagship beer, City Wide, is just that--available pretty much everywhere in St. Louis proper and beyond. They've been the inspiration and collaborator to a number of breweries around the country--especially Tripping Animals in Doral. In fact, Tripping Animals was one of the five breweries chosen for their current series of collaborations based around the famous '80s television show, Voltron. I had the opportunity to sit down with Four Hands CEO and President, Kevin Lemp, to talk about making beer in the shadow of one of the largest breweries on the planet--both Four Hands and their sister distillery 1220 Spirits, and, of course, that Voltron collaboration. Episode 159: 2023 North Miami Brewfest
A couple weeks ago was the latest iteration of the North Miami Brewfest, put on by and benefiting the Chaplin School of Hospitality and Tourism Management at Florida International University. This year, the popular festival was at NoMI Village--a wonderfully designed, relaxed event space in the heart of North Miami Beach, just off Interstate 95. As usual, this is one of the best beer festivals in the state of Florida and had no shortage of amazing food and beer to enjoy. For today's episode, we reached out to a number of different groups in attendance to understand a little bit about who they were and what they brought to the event. I was very happy to speak to both La Birra Bar (winner of the best food award) and Rocketeer Beer (winner of the best beer award) at the event. We also spoke with Uncommon Path, Johnny Cuba, La Tropical, plus our friends at the Chaplin School of Hospitality and Tourism Development and the Bartender's Guild at that same school. You'll hear some familiar voices and some you've never heard before; but, as always, it was a great time and a wonderful event to be at. Listen in... Episode 152: Tripping Animals at the Center For Great Apes & Ulele Celebrates Autumn Equinox with DryFall
Welcome to a busy episode of the Florida Beer Podcast! For the past 30 years, the Center For Great Apes in Wauchula, FL. has cared for orangutans and chimpanzees that were rescued or retired from medical research, private homes, the entertainment industry, and more. To celebrate and bring awareness to their mission, they are hosting a series of events in Florida along with releases of three beers brewed by Tripping Animals Brewing in Miami. We will speak to Tripping Animals co-founder Ignacio Montenegro and with Jane Watkins from the Center for Great Apes to learn more about the Center, discover the beginnings of the releases, and learn a bit more about the styles coming out and the animals whose artwork graces each can. Event details can also be found on Eventbrite by searching Center For Great Apes. From there, we head to Tampa and Ulele, a fantastic restaurant and brewery owned by Columbia Restaurant Group. To celebrate Autumnal Equinox, brewmaster Tim Shackton has created DryFall, a Vienna Lager-IPA hybrid that is expertly crafted for Tampa's hopheads. We'll talk to Tim to get a little background on the beer and how he developed the recipe. Listen in... Episode 151: Homebrewing at SFL Hops Beer Fest 2023!
09/20/2023
Episode 151: Homebrewing at SFL Hops Beer Fest 2023!
SFL Hops is a south Florida (obviously)-based beer organization disseminating information, organizing meetups, and doing so much more. One of their recent events was the SFL Hops Beer Fest, a beer festival and homebrew competition that was held this summer in June at Riverside Market South. They were gracious enough to invite us, and we were smart enough to bring our recording equipment to learn more about what some area homebrewers think about the state of homebrewing today. We start with Stuart Skopit--SFL Hops founder--to talk about the organization and the day's event. From there, we caught up with our good friend Albert Rivera, co-founder of Bread and Beer Buds and Lab Tech at the Fermentation Lab at FIU. He's a wealth of knowledge when it comes to brewing and gave us a little insight about the role and interest in education for homebrewers. Then let's talk to some homebrewers! We start with Rudy Delgado from Rocketeer Beer, who had their beer named for yours truly on tap that day! From there, we chat with Juan Salas from Cinta Verde Brewing, John Gallarte from Little Brewing Co., and Herman Fuenmayor from Dancing Calavera Brewing Company. Finally, we catch up with David Carrion from Bonita Beach Brewing right after they won Best Homebrewer at the competition. And, to get the attendee perspective, Luis Cotto from "Beard Brews and Food & Beer Pressure: The Podcast" was gracious enough to hop over to our show for a bit. And, in the end, we sat down for a quick moment with Adrian Zamudio from Tiny Mallet Designs--maker of all-wood steins that are absolutely fantastic. I'm using mine right now. Listen in... Heard any interesting news about Funky Buddha Brewing? For Episode 150, we are heading to Oakland Park for a super-sized episode with Funky Buddha Brewery owner (re-owner?), Ryan Sentz. Interestingly enough, we recorded this right after their 10th anniversary--also the day they signed the paperwork officially repurchasing the brand from Constellation! We had a nice conversation about the humble beginnings, lessons learned from Constellation, the how and why of repurchasing the brewery, and what's next on the horizon for Funky Buddha. Listen in... There is nothing like a good Florida Rum... A quick stone's throw from Walking Tree Brewing (literally, if you play MLB) in Vero Beach is Indian River Distillery, Florida's newest distillery! Opened by Ray and Mandy Hooker earlier this year, Indian River Distillery has opened with an initial spread of rum, corn whiskey, vodka, and a lot more currently aging away for us to enjoy in the future. As craft distilling is really taking off in the state, we spoke to co-owner Ray Hooker about opening a distillery--especially in a community that had not had a distillery before, creating recipes, and a little history lesson about the Notorious Ashley Gang. Episode 141: Magic 13 Brewing in Miami
It's always an exciting time to scope out a new brewery! That's why, when taking a look at breweries in Miami to go interview on a recent trip, I was amazed and intrigued to see the brand new Magic 13 show up on my radar. The brainchild of Co-Founders Richard Fayad, Ricardo Romano, and head brewer Jean Taboada, Magic 13 is exactly the swanky, cool vibe of a brewery and taproom Miami loves. With a massive outdoor beer garden, a family-friendly atmosphere, and a killer tap list, Magic 13 is a great time and a welcome addition to the Miami craft beer scene. I spoke to Jean and Richard to understand more about the Magic 13 experience, the genesis of the project and wanting to bring it to Miami, and Jean's background as the head brewer at 13 Pesos in Columbia, plus the differences between beer in Colombia vs. the US.
