Welcome to FORMA, a new podcast featuring conversations with authors, teachers, creators, and community leaders who are carefully contemplating the nature and practice of classical education, aesthetic wonder, and Christian community. In episode 6, David chats with Ty and Jenny Rallens about what it was like growing up in the world of classical education, their studies in classical languages at Oxford, and the way forward in the classical renewal. *** After homeschooling through high school, Jenny Rallens studied piano performance before earning her B.A. in 2008 from New St. Andrews College. She is a Master Teacher at The Ambrose School in Boise, Idaho and has spent the last six years speaking at education conferences and teacher training, teaching 5th and 8th grade, directing plays, and writing curricula. She is also currently finishing her Masters degree from the University of Oxford in Literature and Arts, investigating the relationship between memory arts, literature, and virtue. Ty Rallens was homeschooled from third grade through high school, spending 9th-12th grade in Andrew Kern’s humanities and rhetoric classes in Boise, Idaho. Ty went on to simultaneously attend both New St. Andrews College and the University of Idaho, earning a B.A. in liberal arts and cultures and a B.S. in computer engineering. Since then, he has worked as an engineer at Hewlett Packard, taught medieval humanities and rhetoric courses for homeschoolers, and taught 10th-grade classical humanities, rhetoric, and logic at The Ambrose School where he also served part-time as the academic dean. Ty currently works as a program manager at Hewlett Packard, coaches Mock Trial at the Ambrose school, and is finishing a Masters in Literature and Arts from Oxford University. In his free time, he enjoys roasting coffee, rock climbing, and training for triathlons.
