EP 591. Mr. Mister Mallard Whisperer
06/16/2025
EP 591. Mr. Mister Mallard Whisperer
Rockstar turned duck whisperer, Steve Farris shredded stages with 1980s American rock band Mr. Mister---known for their top-charting hits "Kyrie" and "Broken Wings"---jammed with Kiss, Madonna, Whitesnake, Tina Turner and others while never losing his duck-hunter-from-Nebraska identity. He then hung it all up to chase greenheads, develop superior habitat, and mount trophies. Literally. How'd a young Nebraska duck hunter become a rock star? Is the rock star life all it's cracked up to be? When did he know it was it time to step off and why'd he return home to develop some of the best mallard duck holes in the US? Farris absolutely shreds today’s episode, offering insights into both the rock star life and the art of consistently putting mallards over the decoys. EP 588. Taking Ownership in Arkansas Public Land Hunting
"Shut up and show up," says Ich Stewart in explaining his old school approach to taking ownership in Arkansas' fabled public land hunting resource. Starting way back in the days his mentors lived off the land but were thankful, we then race headlong through pitch black woods, our light beam bouncing on hot topics---unruly crowds, unprecedented disturbances, embarrassing fist fights, kill culture versus "owning the ducks", finding quietness in the madness, modern versus old school ethos, mentorship---finally arriving to an emerging grassroots movement called The Public Timber Project () that's taking personal ownership---a sorta skin-in-the-game vested interest---in Arkansas public lands. Don't like where Arkansas public land duck hunting is today? Do something. Take ownership. Listen to this episode for inspiration. *SPECIAL* Flying Blind: Waterfowl Science & Management At Risk
Today's special topic cuts deeper than science or partisan politics---it defends North American duck hunting's essential back bone, wetland health and abundance, continued public land access, and our legacy to future duck hunting generations. Right now, powerful forces are dismantling the foundations of North America's greatest success story--waterfowl hunting as you've known it your entire life. Most have scarcely even noticed. Decades of data and research, the programs and staff that keep ducks overhead and seasons open--all are all on the chopping block. If you've ever watched sunrise from the duck blind, heard thundering wings overhead, or taught your children the meaning of this cherished tradition--this fight belongs to you. Me. All waterfowlers. Silence is complicity. Read the links below. And act now. This is your chance to make a real difference. If not you, who? ---------- ACT NOW-- Call your representatives at links below. Mention the specific issue--lack of federal oversight/data on migratory bird populations or concerns about critical habitat protection. Tell them you're a hunter and appreciate their support. ---------- Learn More: ---------- Visit MOJO’s Duck Season Somewhere Podcast Sponsors: Please subscribe, rate and review Mojo’s Duck Season Somewhere podcast, let us know your thoughts in comments. EP 565. Eastern Shore Maryland Goose Hunter: From Student to Mentor
Goose hunting has been a pretty big deal on Maryland's eastern Shore since forever, and John Taylor's introductions began when first shaking hands with his high school sweetheart's dad. Cutting his teeth back in the days of "junk yard rigs," he remembers laying out a small fortune for a newfangled Eastern Shoreman goose call, later saying that "the Moratorium (the 6-year period that Canada goose hunting was closed) was the best thing that ever happened." Because that's when he earned his real PhD in Canada goose behavior. A storyteller from the get-go, Taylor colorfully recalls an Eastern Shore goose hunting lifetime from student to mentor. And then some. Related Links: Visit MOJO’s Duck Season Somewhere Podcast Sponsors: Please subscribe, rate and review Mojo’s Duck Season Somewhere podcast, let us know your thoughts in comments.
