Blind Dog Interview (Part One)
John and Ben sit down with all three members of the pioneering Swedish stoner rock band, Blind Dog, to discuss their 1999 debut album, The Last Adventures of Captain Dog. Comprised of guitarist Joakim Thell, drummer Thomas Elenvik, and bassist/vocalist Tobias Nilsson, Blind Dog began making riff-heavy underground rock well before bands like Kyuss, Monster Magnet, and Queens of the Stone Age had become household names. Over 20 years later, the band reflects on their early days and the recording sessions for Last Adventures and begins a discussion of the album's key moments; a discussion to be continued in Part Two of the interview, available March 22, 2022 at and on all major podcast platforms. Blind Dog - The Last Adventures of Captain Dog (Part 1)
Ben and John begin their discussion of Blind Dog's debut album, The Last Adventures of Captain Dog. Originally self-released in 1999, the album would see a number of pressings in subsequent years on the Meteor City and People Like You labels amongst others. Though the band hailed from Sweden, they played a version of stoner rock not out of place alongside american bands such as Kyuss, COC, Monster Magnet, and Down. The band's take on US heavy ultiamtely showcased a more song-forward sensibility and musicianship that often outclassed their peers, easily avoiding stereotypes of lazy stoner musicians. Snail - Blood (JJ Koczan of The Obelisk)
On this episode of The Greatest Thing You've Never Heard, Ben and John sit down with JJ Koczan of for the third installment of the show's Guest Lecturer series wherein friends of the show will bring in albums with which neither host is familiar. The Obelisk is an absolute trove of album reviews, music news, and interviews covering everything under and adjacent to the big umbrella of stoner rock, doom metal and heavy psychedelia. Regular listeners will no doubt recall that Ben and John learned about many albums discussed on the show via The Obelisk. The album discussed in the episode at hand is Snail's 2009 sophomore (and first since the band returned from a nearly fifteen year hiatus) outing, Blood. Brimming with stoner heaviness and psychedelic expanse, the album foreshadowed trends in the heavy underground that would become prevalent over the subsequent decade. A fact made all the more impressive given that many of its pummeling tracks and razor sharp hooks were written prior to the band's mid-90s dissolution. The Greatest Thing You've Never Heard is a like a book club for your next favorite record. Each episode is an in-depth examination of a single album that's worthy of greater recognition. Solace - 13
John and Ben discuss the show's 50th(!!!!) record, Solace's 2003 doom/stoner/hardcore freight train of righteous heaviness, 13. Originally released on Meteor City, 13 breaks away from the monolithic nature of the band's debut album, Further, and presents a more eclectic and arguably more effective showcase for Solace's unique and powerful brand of heavy. Throughout, the group uses distortion and seething aggression to create a level of emotional resonance and catharsis seldom found in any of the genres to which one might say the album belongs.
