Horror Movie Weekly Ep. 185: Gun Woman (2015)
Your delineated duo of dread is back for Episode 185 of Horror Movie Weekly, and this time Jay of the Dead and Mister Watson leave the classy, prestige-horror mountaintop behind and gleefully roll around in the cinematic mud with Mister Watson’s Feature Review pick, Gun Woman (2015) — an outrageous Japanese revenge-splatter oddity that is graphic, sleazy, violent, absurd and, according to both hosts, considerably better made than its disreputable subject matter might suggest. Before descending into Gun Woman’s fever-dream madness, the guys bring you their usual Micro Horror Movie Reviews. Mister Watson discusses the faux-documentary, shot-on-video throwback Harvest Brood (2025), while Jay reviews the New Zealand hiking Horror film Loop Track (2023). Along the way, Jay shares some creepy Kiwi wilderness lore involving mysterious deep holes filled with animal bones, Watson talks about the joys of watching Horror with good headphones, and both hosts celebrate their friend Kombat Karl, “The Mad Irishman,” on his 62nd birthday! Then comes Gun Woman, where Jay and Watson discuss extreme cinema, exploitation Horror, gruesome body trauma, an unforgettable revenge scheme, one seriously depraved villain, Asami’s committed and physically demanding performance, and perhaps one of the most bizarrely entertaining training montages ever put to film. Jay even compares the experience to a fever dream and somehow detours into a childhood story about his cousin using the mute button to commit an unforgivable act of “Rocky IV” sabotage. Is Gun Woman tasteful? Absolutely not. Is it for everybody? Definitely not. But for certain adventurous Horror fans, both Jay of the Dead and Mister Watson think this cinematic oddity is something special. Join us! Note: This episode was recorded on January 22, 2026, Karl’s birthday.

Horror Movie Weekly Ep. 184: Dying Breed (2009)
Jay of the Dead and Mister Watson return for Episode 184 with another Horror Movie Weekly Feature Review drawn from their current 2005 to 2015 selection era. This time, Jay brings the Australian backwoods Horror film, Dying Breed (2009), to the table, leading to a discussion about Tasmanian tiger folklore, Ozploitation cinema, After Dark Horror Fest’s “8 Films to Die For” series, gruesome violence, bleak endings, and whether this underseen film deserves more attention from Horror fans. Along the way, the hosts discuss Chappell Roan’s “Pink Pony Club,” the endlessly lovely Rachel McAdams, airplane thrillers, time-loop horror movies, Wes Craven’s Red Eye (2005), the appeal of After Dark Horror Fest titles, and the challenges of creating effective Horror cold opens. As always, this episode also features our world famous Micro Horror Movie Reviews of recently watched films. Note: This episode was recorded on January 15, 2026. Horror Movie Weekly Ep. 183: The Orphanage (2007)
06/01/2026
Horror Movie Weekly Ep. 183: The Orphanage (2007)
After a long hiatus, Horror Movie Weekly returns for Episode 183, where Jay of the Dead and Mister Watson reunite to discuss one of the most emotionally devastating supernatural Horror films of the 2000s: The Orphanage (2007). Chosen by Mister Watson, this Spanish-language Gothic ghost story becomes the centerpiece for an unusually heartfelt and deeply personal discussion about grief, sorrow, memory, childhood innocence, and the power of Horror films that linger long after the credits roll. The hosts reflect on their own first experiences seeing the film — including Jay digging his car out of a snowstorm after a late-night screening in Utah and Watson recalling the profound emotional impact the film had on him during a difficult season of life. Along the way, the boys discuss Guillermo del Toro’s involvement as producer, compare the film to classics like The Changeling and The Others, debate whether the best ghost stories are inherently sorrowful, and even somehow manage to discuss Pig-Headed Horror, Pamela Voorhees, Peter Pan motifs, and whether Spain had Yellow Pages. Plus, as always, we bring you Micro Horror Movie Reviews of It Ends (2025) and Faces in the Crowd (2011). This episode is equal parts spooky, melancholy, thoughtful, and ridiculous — just the way Horror Movie Weekly likes it. Join us! Note: This episode was recorded on January 8, 2026. Horror Movie Weekly Ep. 182: The Host (2006)
05/19/2026
Horror Movie Weekly Ep. 182: The Host (2006)
The Didactic Duo of Dread return for Episode 182 of Horror Movie Weekly, where Jay of the Dead and Mister Watson tackle Bong Joon-ho’s acclaimed South Korean creature feature, The Host (2006) — Jay’s pick for this week’s Feature Review. The hosts dig into the film’s jaw-dropping opening monster attack sequence, its tonal balancing act between Beastly Freak Horror and quirky comedy, and whether the CG creature effects still hold up 20 years later. And somewhere in the middle of all this, the hosts attempt to determine whether The Host is secretly a comedy. (Results inconclusive.) Along the way, the boys discuss the pitfalls of “mid-tier” French Extreme Horror, debate whether ils / Them (2006) deserves its legendary reputation, and once again descend into some very dark True Crime territory courtesy of Jay’s well-documented Forensic Files obsession. Also in this episode: company summit hosting disasters, cowboy hats at the office, karaoke hypotheticals, Starbucks blueberry muffins, and why Watson believes Kidnapped (2010) belongs among the greatest home invasion Horror films ever made! Horror Movie Weekly Ep. 181: Sublime (2007)
OK, dammit. It’s time for Episode 181 of Horror Movie Weekly, One Badass Horror Podcast. During this episode, Jay of the Dead and Mister Watson bring you a Feature Review of Sublime (2007). And during our Micro Horror Movie Reviews, Mister Watson completes a rite of passage, of sorts, by watching “Jan-Gel: The Beast From the East” (1999)! Jay of the Dead highlights and recommend five disturbingly creepy “Forensic Files” episodes and, inexplicably, ends up regaling the audience with multiple (yes, multiple), non-gross colonoscopy stories! Horror Movie Weekly Ep. 180: Black Mountain Side (2014)

Horror Movie Weekly Ep. 180: Black Mountain Side (2014)
Anyway, as we were saying six months ago, we’re back again and we have revised our Feature Review selection parameters of our pool of Horror movies to this special span: 2005 to 2015. The time span in Horror is important to your intrepid hosts because it overlaps with the era of films discussed in their formative years of Horror podcasting. Therefore, here in Episode 180 of Horror Movie Weekly, Jay of the Dead and Mister Watson bring you a Feature Review of the fairly obscure Black Mountain Side (2014), which is an apparent homage to John Carpenter’s “The Thing” (1982). And in addition to our usual Micro Horror Movie Reviews, the boys break out into a brief Concept Discussion about the way they deal with the finite number of movies that any of us can watch during our lives: Watson and Jay share their feelings about rewatching movies and the famous “Dave Zee Second Watch.” Also, Jay calls out himself for bailing on his principles and being hypocritical for determining “Year of Release” on “older release movies.” And for whatever reason, apropos of nothing, Jay tells stories about his late ’90s comedy songs, “Flyin’ to Flin Flon” and “What Is It These Stars Are Made of?” (These show notes read like the ramblings of a crazy person.) And inexplicably, late in this self-same episode, Watson goes through two simultaneous Charlie horses on air! Ha ha Eat more bananas, Watson! And you know the kind we mean! Horror Movie Weekly Ep. 179: The Substance (2024)
This might be the one you’ve been waiting for… or maybe the one you’ve been dreading. Perhaps our longest episode of Horror Movie Weekly, here in epic Episode 179, Jay of the Dead and Mister Watson bring you an in-depth, spoiler review of the Academy Award-winning Horror film, The Substance (2024), with the Herculean help of special guest Kagan “The Fruit Brute” Breitenbach! During this episode, you will hear Kagan refer to this Body Horror movie as “The Cultural Horror Film of the Year,” while The Fruit Brute also refers to Jay of the Dead as “The Harvey Weinstein of Horror Podcasting”… As you might have guessed, this is indeed a “Mister Watson pick,” naturally. And we also bring you four our famous Micro Horror Movie Reviews! Join us — and if not you, then perhaps the younger version of yourself that emerges from the fluid of your spinal column. Notes: Remember, this is a full-blown spoiler review of “The Substance.” Also, while this podcast is typically “clean” or “non-explicit,” this particular episode does have a bit of “salty language.” And finally, this episode was recorded on February 6, 2025, and released on August 12, 2025. Also of note: While they were in West Virginia, Jay of the Dead’s offspring produced this week’s show: The episode was edited by “Gizmo” — Jay of the Dead’s daughter — and the artwork was created by Spawn of the Dead, Jay’s son! Join us! This weekly Horror movie podcast brings you one recent Horror movie review every Sunday. (As noted previously, we’re defining “recent” as any Horror movie released within the last five years or the current year; so now that it’s 2024, we’ll be covering Horror films from 2019 to the present.) And we always reveal next week’s pick at the end of every show, so you can watch along with us and be prepared for the following episode. Join us, and thanks for listening! Horror Movie Weekly Ep. 156: The Breach (2023)
Technically, Episode 156 is the first episode of Horror Movie Weekly that Jay of the Dead and Mister Watson have recorded in 2024, after a two-month break from recording during the holidays. And now that it’s 2024, our coverage spans from 2019 to 2024. During this show, Jay of the Dead chose The Breach (2023) from the Feature Review. Of course, we bring you our Micro Horror Movie Reviews. In addition, we learn what is the only Horror film that actually scares Mister Watson. Jay of the Dead gives a public confession regarding exorcism movies, and he answers a Mandela effect mystery about peanut butter! Apropos of nothing, Jay edited this episode at 35,000 feet (while flying on an airplane from Phoenix to Pittsburgh). Oh, and this week’s episode art was created by “Gizmo” — Jay of the Dead’s daughter! Join us! This weekly Horror movie podcast brings you one recent Horror movie review every Sunday.
