EP288: The Scariest Songs of All Time
What’s a good horror movie without a terrifying score? A simple Google search will show you that The Shining can be marketed as a romantic comedy with the right music. EP287: Peter Murphy "Deep"
This is the third episode we’ve dedicated to the Bauhaus frontman’s solo work but only the second album we’ve discussed (we inexplicably recorded two episodes about his sophomore LP “Love Hysteria”). Both are chock full of excellent songwriting and of course Murphy’s chill-inducing baritone but they are not without their flaws and some definitive signs of carbon dating. We discuss. EP285BS: Black Sabbath "13"
Ozzy is back and not a second too soon. We wrap our Sabbath Series with their 2013 reunion LP. The album saw the return of two thirds of the original quartet and while drummer Bill Ward is certainly missed, the magic that Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi and Geezer Butler had way back when things all began in 1970 is absolutely still very much in tact. The atmosphere, the riffs, the wonderful doom and gloom are all present. In short, Black Sabbath is Black Sabbath again. EP284: J. Robbins "Basilisk"
J. Robbins legacy in the punk/indie rock world was cemented years ago. As the driving creative force behind Jawbox, Burning Airlines, Channels and Office of Future Plans as well as the producer of some of the best records of the early aughts including classics by Jets to Brazil, The Dismemberment Plans, Shiner and The Promise Ring, he has left an indelible mark on the guitar-driven rock of the past thirty+ years. His second solo outing leans more heavily into keyboards than he ever has before but the results are no less impactful. The record is eleven songs of exactly the musical quality and lyrical smarts that we have all come to expect from the man. EP283BS: Black Sabbath "Forbidden"
The penultimate episode of our Black Sabbath series and the last before we get to return to the soothing voice of Ozzy Osbourne. Geezer Butler has again departed and as we have learned, that means a significant dip in quality. It does nothing to diminish the legacy of the Birmingham greats as their legacy was cemented decades prior to this albums release, but it is fair to say that our conversation about Forbidden is better than listening to the album itself. The album closes with suicidal thoughts prompted by a beloved McDonald’s mascot and the episode was appropriately recorded on Friday the 13th which happens to be the subject of track three “Pamela” which imagines what Mrs. Vorhees life might of been like prior to the death of her son Jason. EP280: X "Smoke & Fiction"
The latest (and apparently last) studio album from the LA legends is a worthy addition to their catalog. It’s filled with everything we’ve come to love from the band since their debut almost forty years ago. John and Exene’s autobiographical lyrics, Billy Zoom’s unmistakable tempo drenched Gretsch and DJ’s Bonebrake’s splashy hi-hat all shine across ten bangers that speed by at a brisk 29 minutes. We've dedicated more episodes to X than to any other band (six including the to great Knitter’s first LP) and this won’t be the last. EP274BS: Black Sabbath "Cross Purposes"
Just as soon as Ronnie James Dio returned to Black Sabbath for the Dehumanizer record, he just as quickly departed again to make room (also again) for the return of Tony Martin. Given the spottiness (to be generous) of previous Martin led Sabbath albums we were skeptical and not necessarily excited about diving into Cross Purposes however, our concerns were quickly alleviated. From Track One / Side One, "I Witness” on, the might and heaviness of Black Sabbath is back and there is now a seemingly newly discovered restraint in Martin’s vocal performance. Most of it all, Cross Purposes sounds like a capital “S" Sabbath album. While the constant across every album is Tony Iommi, the constant across all the great to good Sabbath albums is Geezer Butler. The Geez is the special Sabbath sauce! EP273: Modest Mouse "The Lonesome Crowded West"
While Seattle had Nirvana and Olympia had Sleater-Kinney, Issaquah Washington had it’s own great 90’s power trio in Modest Mouse, a band of weirdos who had a kick-ass rhythm section with chops for days and a singer/songwriter in guitarist Issac Brock, that had the perfect lisp-ridden voice to convey his stories of suburban America's dark decay with equal measure anger, frustration and disappointment. Their 1997 sophomore LP is arguably their creative peak, each song sounding more vital and urgent than the next. EP269: Remembering Steve Albini

EP269: Remembering Steve Albini
Steve Albini was one of a kind. As a songwriter and musician in his bands Big Black, Rapeman and Shellac he made aggressive, uncompromising music with biting songs about the darkest side of the human experience. As an audio engineer he recorded pivotal albums for the likes of Nirvana, Pixies and PJ Harvey and worked with thousands of others covering every genre conceivable and changing the sound of modern music forever. He was a small business owner, a poker champion, a husband, a brother and a son. He was opinionated, sarcastic, hilarious and in recent years, self reflective. He died suddenly and unexpectedly at the far too young age of 61, while at work, doing a job that he often compared to a plumbers, a blue collar gig that required dedication, commitment and a tireless work ethic. It just so happened that Steve Albini’s daily grind changed all of our lives. RIP Mr. Albini, you will be missed. EP268BS: Black Sabbath "Tyr"
While still nowhere near the sound of classic Sabbath, “Tyr" is the closest we’ve been since "The Mob Rules." If nothing else, the 1990 sound of the band was unique from what other guitar driven bands were doing at the time. It’s not the Pixies or Jane’s Addiction or Bad Brains or Alice in Chains and it’s certainly not Cannibal Corpse, each of whom released significant records that same year. What it is is a band that sounds fully in belief of the music that they’re making and along with Bathory’s “Hammerheart,” also released in 1990, it could be argued that “Tyr” helps invent Viking Metal (for better or worse). EP267: Go Ahead and Die "Unhealthy Mechanisms"
Max Cavalera has been audibly pissed since the 1985 release of Sepultura’s debut EP “Bestial Devastation” (and probably before). His mood has not improved in the years since. From Nailbomb to Soulfly, Cavalera Conspiracy to Killer Be Killed, every project the Brazilian guitarist/songwriter/shouter has been involved with has loudly had more than its fair share of vitriol. Maybe forming a band with his son would calm the 54 year old. Maybe, but then they opted to call the project Go Ahead and Die and write songs called “Truckload of Bodies.” I guess the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. Same old Discharge loving Max. Today, Henry Rollins is a humorous spoken word performer and author but the Henry Rollins of old was mostly just angry. Very, very angry. First with DC punk outfit SOA and then as Black Flag’s fourth singer, Mr Rollins could barely contain his testosterone fueled rage and both bands benefitted. EP265: Motörhead "Another Perfect Day"
The first Motörhead release without Fast Eddie Clarke and the only to include his replacement, ex-Thin Lizzy guitarist Brian Robertson could have been a disaster. Instead, it’s Another Perfect Day. Lemmy's rasp and bass roar remain in tack as does Filthy Phil’s frenetic pounding, and while Fast Eddie’s speedy riffing is missed, in it’s place are Robertson’s newly welcomed guitar melodies that add another dimension to the ferocity of the patented Motörhead sound. From its iconic cover to the deification of singer Ian Curtis after his suicide shortly after the albums release to their transformation into the stadium filling New Order afterward, everything about Joy Division feels big and important. But what about the music itself? Sure it influenced everyone from The Cure to U2, Tears For fears to Interpol but does it hold up on its own merits in 2024? We dig into the fading new dawn and attempt to remember everything. EP263: Wire "Pink Flag"
Outside of Black Sabbath and the Ramones, it’s hard to imagine a band more influential to Alternative music than Wire. Without their first three albums, 80’s Post Punk & College Rock, 90’s Shoegaze & Brit Pop and the indie rock of 2000’s would have all sounded completely different and early 80’s Hardcore maybe never exists. Their 1977 debut is simultaneously a totem of its time and entirely timeless. Pink Flag's songs span just over thirty five minutes and there’s nary a wasted second with every note spawning a new genre / inspiring a new band. We dive deep. Flex your head. EP262BS: Black Sabbath "Headless Cross"
Unbeknownst to us, this long unavailable album would be remastered and made available on all your notable music streaming services only a week or two after we recorded this episode. That means that you can now hear it with Apple Music or Spotify clarity as opposed to the less than desirable ad-riddled YouTube experience we had to endure to prep for this conversation. Does that vastly improve the record’s listening experience? No, no it does not. You can’t polish a turd. Enter at your own risk.
