IRS Monday: Oct 15 Deadline, New IRS App, Farmland Tax Rule
If you filed an extension back in April, your 2025 return is due Thursday, October 15, and there is no second extension. An extension gave you more time to file, not more time to pay. In this episode, I explain why not filing because you can't pay is the most expensive mistake in this business: the penalty for not filing is ten times the penalty for not paying, and filing on time is what gets you the cheaper payment plan rate. Also this week: the IRS launched a new official app that replaces IRS2Go and puts your balance, payments, notices, transcripts, and identity protection PIN on your phone. And Treasury and the IRS put out proposed rules that let some farmland sellers pay the tax on their gain in four equal installments when the land goes to an active farmer and stays restricted to farm use for 10 years. This week's takeaway: An extension is time to file, not time to pay. If you owe and you can't pay, file anyway by October 15, then download the new IRS app, log in, and look at what the IRS says you owe. I'm Darrin T.
