Escape Rooms Introducing Greg Koberger Today's guest joining us on the Join Up Dots podcast is a lady who for many years worked in the corporate environment. He hails from the lovely town of Schaghticoke (pronounced scat-a-coke) in upstate New York. After attending RIT he made the move to San Francisco where he’s worked for Mozilla, and freelanced for a bunch of startups. In fact when Greg interviewed at Mozilla, he was asked where he wanted to be in five years. His answer? Well most of the time you would expect a response in the line of "I want to firmly providing daily value to your customers and stakeholders" or other such waffle. Our guest today instead answered "Running my own startup." Four years and 363 days later, after several starts and stops, years of freelancing, and a failed Y Combinator application, he achieved his goal just ahead of deadline. It proves that the glamorous world of startups are just as prone to failure as they are global success. Interestingly, early on, Greg discovered a unique team-building exercise in escape rooms. He values the game so much, in fact, that he decided to build his own: Startup Escape. and to date hundreds of companies have gone through this immersive experience in San Francisco, earning it quite the reputation among startups. So why does he feel driven to put himself under so much strain and workload, when remaining as an employee would quite often be so much easier? Developing Personal Strengths Developing Personal Strengths My guest today, on the Steve Jobs inspired Join Up Dots free podcast interview is a lady from Melbourne Australia who has one belief in life. That all of us are capable of being a bigger, brighter version of ourselves than we give ourselves the opportunity to be. Her official bio states that she is "is a best-selling author, workplace well being teacher and playful change activator" which is of course true but is not something that occurs by magic. Back in 1994, she was working for PR Works as a general manager where she built a profitable IT portfolio, as well as creating a media training service for CEOS. Which I find fascinating, as someone who is now firmly entrenched in the people development world, this wasn't an area of her life that just burst into being after several decades. It was there right at the beginning, which grew larger in her next job as a PR Manager for Sausage Software. But it seems to me that things moved up a gear when performing the position at Pricewaterhouse Coopers, as their international leadership coach, where she worked across the world to implement the companies brand strategy using Positive Psychology theories across their culture. And then there comes the time where our guest could have continued to rise up the ranks in corporate land, gaining the salary and working tirelessly to build someone else dream. But our guest had other ideas, and left to create her own company and her own dream, after completing her Masters in Applied Positive Psychology (MAPP) at the University of Pennsylvania And with a career history scattered with roles lasting a couple of years or so, it appears that she has truly found her thing, as she has stayed where she is ever since. Developing her company, bringing in bigger clients and well......loving it. As she says "I'm passionate about bringing out the best in people, particularly at work. Fusing Neuroscience and Positive Psychology into tested, practical actions, I create happier, more rewarding and more profitable workplaces for employees, their bosses and their organisations." One things for sure his life hasn't been easy, with a drugs and alcohol dependency taking grip at an early age. Throughout his teens and the majority of his adult life his daily routine revolved around selling or taking drugs. But eight years ago his life took a turn for the better when he wandered into a SoulCycle studio that was just opening up in Los Angeles. SoulCycle is a fitness company that is the gold standard in cycling workouts. After his first workout, he was hooked. How The Dots Joined Up For Noa For three months, he attended every day – sometimes two workouts per day. He lost 100 pounds and got himself into shape both physically and mentally. The team at SoulCycle saw something in Noa and they invited him to audition as a fitness instructor. Now at 57 years old, he is the oldest SoulCycle instructor on the planet. And here in New York City, Noa has built a dedicated following of riders that are inspired by him on a regular basis. Today, he’s one of Soul Cycle’s most popular instructors and teaches sold-out classes in NYC multiple times a week. As a certified life coach, he guides his clients to become better versions of themselves by helping them identify and understand their purpose in order to achieve what they want in life. Leap Of Faith So many people in life, feel that what they do, is what they will do for the rest of their lives. They go into jobs that might inspire at the beginning, but over time, little by little start to become a drag. Every minute feels like an hour, everyday feels like a month. But they put up with it until its time for retirement, when they are free to mow the lawn, walk the dog, and have nice little naps in the afternoon. Well today's guest joining us on Join Up Dots is a former senior Derby police officer, who since 1985 when he joined the force "saw the darkest side of humanity" as he says, while dealing with horrific murders and acts of violence. He retired at the rank of Superintendent on New Year's Eve and, just the following day, picked up his first client after taking courses on hypnotherapy and life-coaching skills. Yes he went through the life coach shool and has come out the other side with his own life coaching business In just short of a year, he has expanded his fledgling business and now has clients across the globe, who he helps via Skype. He says "In less than a year I have built up a client base that stretches to Australia, the USA, Europe and the Middle East and I have helped all ranges of people including chocoholics, nail biters and alcoholics. One of my earliest clients was a man who had suffered with a stutter for more than 30 years. Through hypnotherapy and life skills I have learned, we stripped back his problem to when he first started stuttering as a ten-year-old and within a short space of time I have helped him stop. He has since thanked me as it has given him a huge amount of confidence and enabled him to get a promotion at work. I am loving what I am doing, and my confidence has never been higher." And this is a key part to what makes a business begin to flourish, its not the skills, its not the global reach, but it is certainly the personal confidence. The moment you truly begin to believe in yourself is when the world says "Right we think you can handle what we are going to give you, so make this into a success" So did he struggle with the "Oh god, this is my first client, I'm not ready for this" mentality after quitting the police force?"
