150 | Why Spiritual Drift Happens and How to Return to God
In this episode on Judges 2, Pastor David Maestas speaks of the consequences of compromise and how they begin to unfold. What started as incomplete obedience in Judges 1 now becomes spiritual drift, sorrow, and a generation that no longer knows the Lord or remembers what He had done for Israel. This chapter is one of the clearest warnings in Scripture about what happens when faith is neglected, truth is not passed down, and people slowly blend in with the culture around them. It also reveals the mercy of God, who continues to raise up deliverers even when His people repeatedly turn away. Judges 2 is not only Israel’s story, it is a mirror for every generation. It shows how easy it is to slowly drift from God, and how desperately we need remembrance, obedience, and repentance. But even in judgment, God is compassionate. He raises up judges to rescue His people again and again. Still, the cycle continues: rebellion, bondage, crying out, rescue, and relapse. Judges 2 reminds us that spiritual drift is usually gradual, not dramatic. It often begins with small compromises, forgotten gratitude, neglected truth, and hearts that become more shaped by culture than by God. Don't forget to SUBSCRIBE for new episodes like this!

149 | How Partial Obedience Leads to Spiritual Compromise
In Judges 1, Israel steps into the Promised Land ready to move forward. They actually begin in a good place, they seek the Lord and ask what they should do next. There’s direction. Over and over again, we see the same phrase: “they did not drive them out.” Instead of fully obeying what God had asked, they begin to compromise. They allow certain people to stay, put them to forced labor, and learn to live alongside what God had clearly told them to remove. But what starts as partial obedience slowly turns into a pattern of compromise, and eventually, confusion. There’s a moment in Judges 1:19 where it says Judah couldn’t drive out the inhabitants because they had iron chariots. And you can almost hear the justification in that. This is too hard. This is too much. This isn’t realistic. It's an invitation to take an honest look at our lives and ask: Where have I stopped short? What have I allowed to stay that God has asked me to remove? Where have I chosen what feels easier over what God has said? Because obedience isn’t just about starting well, it’s about finishing faithfully. 148 | How to Handle Success God's Way
In 2 Samuel 8:1–13, we see David in a season of victory. Nation after nation falls before him. His kingdom expands. His influence grows. His strength is undeniable. But Scripture repeats a powerful phrase: “The Lord gave David victory wherever he went.” This chapter is about God’s sovereignty. The victories were not self-made; they were God-given. In this episode, Pastor David Maestas walks us through: Why success can be more spiritually dangerous than struggle The importance of remembering where your victories come from How David handled power, wealth, and expansion The significance of dedicating the spoils to the Lord What it means to steward influence with humility David didn’t hoard his victories. He dedicated them to God. When God blesses you, whether in leadership, business, family, ministry, or influence—the question becomes: Will you build your own name, or will you honor His? 2 Samuel 8 reminds us that true strength is not independence. It is dependence. And the same God who preserved David is the One who sustains us today. If you are walking in a season of success, growth, or breakthrough, this message will challenge you to stay grounded, grateful, and faithful. Victory is sweetest when it is surrendered.

147 | God Says: There's a Difference Between Ambition and Obedience
In 2 Samuel 7:1–29, David has a good idea. He wants to build a house for God. After all, he is living in a palace while the ark of the covenant rests in a tent. It seems honorable, spiritual, and even obvious. But God says no. Instead of allowing David to build Him a house, God makes a covenant with David and promises to build him a house, a dynasty that will last forever. This chapter marks a turning point in redemptive history and ultimately points to Jesus, the true and eternal King who would come from David’s line. In this episode, Pastor David Maestas explores: Why good intentions are not always God’s assignment How to respond when God redirects your plans The difference between ambition and obedience What the Davidic covenant reveals about God’s faithfulness How 2 Samuel 7 ultimately points to Christ If you’re in a season where God has closed a door, delayed a dream, or redirected your path, this chapter reminds us that His “no” is often protecting a bigger “yes.” God’s promises are not dependent on your performance. They are rooted in His covenant faithfulness. Listen in as Pastor David Maestas unpacks how to trust God’s timing, surrender your plans, and rest in the reality that He is building something greater than you can see.

146 | Honor the Lord
In this episode, Pastor David Maestas walks through one of the most powerful and sobering moments in the life of King David, bringing the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem. What begins as celebration becomes a lesson in reverence, obedience, and what it truly means to honor the Lord. This passage reminds us that God’s presence is a gift, but it is never casual. Honor is not just about emotion. It is about obedience, humility, and putting God’s glory above our image.

144 | Wrestling With God: Religion vs. Relationship
In this episode, Pastor David Maestas walks through 1 Samuel 4:1–5:5, a dramatic and sobering moment in Israel’s history. The Israelites are at war with the Philistines, but instead of seeking God’s heart, they try to use God’s presence like a lucky charm. They bring the Ark of the Covenant into battle, assuming it will guarantee victory, and they are devastatingly wrong. This passage forces us to ask a hard question: Do we actually trust God, or do we just want Him to bless our plans? We explore how Israel confused religious symbolism with real relationship, treating the Ark like a spiritual weapon rather than a holy representation of God’s covenant presence. When the Ark is captured, it shakes their identity, exposes their spiritual drift, and reveals a painful truth — God will not be manipulated. Then the story shifts to Philistine territory, where the Ark is placed in the temple of Dagon. What happens next is both ironic and powerful. The false god falls face down before the Ark — twice. Even in captivity, God proves He is still sovereign.

143 | Misplaced Loyalty: Right People, Wrong Direction
In this episode of The Living It Out Podcast, Pastor Dave Maestas teaches from 2 Samuel 3:1–39, confronting a hard but necessary truth: you can be surrounded by the right people and still be headed in the wrong direction. This chapter highlights the danger of misplaced loyalty. As David grows stronger, the house of Saul grows weaker—but many characters remain committed to systems, leaders, and patterns God is clearly moving away from. Abner’s power struggles, shifting allegiances, and eventual downfall reveal how pride, fear, and self-interest can keep people fighting for the wrong cause. Pastor Dave unpacks how this passage speaks directly to our lives today—our friendships, leadership structures, workplaces, and even churches. In this message, you’ll learn: Why loyalty without discernment can become disobedience How pride and control can blind us to where God is moving The difference between being faithful and being stubborn Why following God sometimes requires leaving familiar teams or systems How to evaluate whether you’re aligned with God’s direction or just comfortable people

142 | The Cost of Waiting Well
In this episode of The Living It Out Podcast, Pastor David Maestas teaches from 2 Samuel 2:1–3:5, reminding us that just because God has promised something doesn’t mean the battle is over. In fact, sometimes the fight intensifies after the anointing. As David steps into leadership over Judah, conflict immediately follows. The house of Saul and the house of David enter a long, exhausting struggle—one marked by opposition, loss, and slow progress. This passage shows us a hard but necessary truth: spiritual battles are often prolonged, personal, and refining. Pastor Dave unpacks what it looks like to: Trust God while progress feels slow Lead faithfully in seasons of opposition Stay obedient when the promise hasn’t fully materialized Recognize that growth often happens through resistance This teaching challenges listeners to stop interpreting hardship as failure and instead see it as part of God’s forming process. David didn’t rush the throne, manipulate outcomes, or fight in his own strength, he waited on God while walking faithfully through conflict.

141 | The Hidden Test of Your Character
In this episode of The Living It Out Podcast, Pastor David Maestas unpacks 2 Samuel 1 with a powerful and practical message on integrity, and how our character is revealed in the small, unseen decisions we make every day. Drawing from the story of the Amalekite who claimed to have killed Saul, Pastor David shows how deception and self-interest can destroy credibility and purpose. The Amalekite thought his half-truth would earn David’s approval—but integrity can’t be built on manipulation. Through humor and conviction, Pastor David asks: Would you take the socks back?—a simple but striking metaphor for how we justify small compromises that chip away at honesty and trust. In this message, you’ll learn: Why true integrity is doing the right thing even when no one’s watching. How God tests our hearts in ordinary, everyday moments. Why shortcuts and small lies lead to spiritual decay. How to build a life that’s consistent, trustworthy, and honoring to God. Don't forget to SUBSCRIBE for new episodes!

140 | Run the Race: The Discipline That Shapes You
In the final message of our Hebrews series, Pastor David Maestas teaches from Hebrews 12, a chapter that calls believers to endurance, maturity, and unwavering focus on Jesus. Hebrews 12 reminds us that the Christian life is a race — one that requires discipline, perseverance, and intentionality. We are surrounded by the legacy of those who ran before us (Hebrews 11), inspiring us to keep moving forward when life feels heavy. Pastor David explores how: God’s discipline isn’t punishment — it’s proof of His love. Trials build spiritual endurance and strength. We are called to throw off the sin and distractions that slow us down. Fixing our eyes on Jesus gives us the courage to keep going. The discipline you’re experiencing isn’t God’s rejection — it’s His preparation. The race is long, but you’re not running it alone. 139 | Can God Actually Use Me?
In this episode of The Living It Out Podcast, Pastor David Maestas teaches from Hebrews 11, the faith chapter, reminding us that God has always used ordinary and imperfect people to accomplish extraordinary things. Through examples like Abraham, Moses, and Daniel—men and women who “through faith subdued kingdoms, obtained promises, and stopped the mouths of lions” (Hebrews 11:33)—we see that God’s strength shines brightest through human weakness. Pastor David challenges believers to consider: If those who came before us could walk faithfully without ever seeing the fulfillment of God’s promises, how much more should we walk faithfully having already received Christ, the ultimate promise fulfilled? This message encourages listeners to: Trust God’s plan even when you can’t see the outcome. Let faith, not fear, define your story. Believe that God can use your weakness for His glory. 138 | The Day Jesus Ended Religion
In this episode, Pastor David Maestas teaches through Hebrews 10, a chapter that powerfully declares the sufficiency of Christ’s sacrifice. Unlike the endless animal offerings of the old covenant that could never take away sin, Jesus offered Himself once for all, bringing lasting forgiveness and access to God. Because of His finished work, we are invited to draw near with confidence, knowing that our hearts are cleansed and our consciences made new. Pastor David also highlights the call to perseverance—holding unswervingly to the hope we profess and encouraging one another as we see the Day approaching. The warning against shrinking back is sobering, but the promise is greater: those who endure in faith will receive what God has promised. This passage reminds us that our confidence isn’t in ourselves, but in the one sacrifice that changed everything.

In this episode, Pastor David Maestas walks through Hebrews 9, where we’re given a powerful comparison between the old covenant rituals and the once-for-all sacrifice of Jesus. While the earthly tabernacle and repeated animal sacrifices pointed to the need for cleansing, they were only temporary and symbolic. Jesus entered the true Most Holy Place—not with the blood of animals, but with His own—securing eternal redemption for all who believe. Pastor David reminds us that forgiveness isn’t earned through religion or repetition; it’s received through the perfect and final work of Christ. His blood doesn’t just cover sin—it cleanses the conscience and opens the way to God. If you’ve ever wondered whether you’re truly forgiven, this chapter gives a clear and resounding answer: in Jesus, you are.

In this episode, Pastor David Maestas dives into Hebrews 8, where we see the unveiling of a new and better covenant—one not written on stone tablets, but on human hearts. The old covenant was a shadow, pointing to something greater, and now that greater reality has come through Jesus, our perfect High Priest, who ministers not in an earthly temple but in heaven itself. Pastor David reminds us that the gospel isn’t about external rules—it’s about internal transformation. God’s desire is relationship, not ritual. This new covenant brings forgiveness, access, and lasting change—not through our effort, but through Christ’s finished work. It's not just a different system—it’s a complete spiritual upgrade.

In this episode, Pastor David Maestas unpacks the rich theology of Hebrews 7, where Jesus is revealed as our eternal High Priest in the order of Melchizedek. Unlike the temporary and imperfect priesthood of the Old Testament, Jesus offers something far better—permanent intercession and an unshakable hope. The old system couldn’t bring people into true closeness with God, but Jesus can. Pastor David emphasizes that we no longer need to rely on flawed systems or human mediators. Jesus is both sinless and eternal—completely able to save those who come to God through Him. This message is a powerful reminder that our hope isn’t based on religion or ritual, but on a living Savior who never stops advocating for us.

134 | The Scariest Warning in the New Testament?
In this episode, Pastor David Maestas walks through one of the most sobering chapters in Hebrews. Hebrews 6 urges believers to move beyond the basics and press into maturity. It warns of the danger of falling away after knowing the truth—highlighting that spiritual stagnation isn’t neutral, it’s a risk. This isn’t about losing salvation easily, but about the seriousness of rejecting what God has offered after fully receiving it. Pastor David reminds us that God is not unjust—He sees our faith, our perseverance, and our love. Even in the warning, there’s encouragement: those who keep moving forward in faith will inherit the promises. It’s a call to diligence, hope, and endurance. There’s no room for apathy in a life truly surrendered to Christ.

But the tone shifts as the writer addresses spiritual immaturity. By now, the believers should be teaching others, yet they still need spiritual milk. The call is clear: it’s time to grow up. Pastor David challenges listeners not to settle for surface-level faith. Growth requires discipline, time in the Word, and a willingness to move from comfort to conviction. If we want depth, wisdom, and lasting impact, we have to stop avoiding the harder truths of Scripture and start training ourselves for spiritual maturity.

In this episode, Pastor David Maestas explores the deep spiritual meaning of rest in Hebrews 4. This isn’t about naps or vacations—it’s about the soul-level rest that comes from trusting fully in the finished work of Christ. The author of Hebrews warns that many will miss this rest, not because they weren’t invited, but because they responded with unbelief and disobedience. True rest requires faith and surrender, not striving. Pastor David also highlights the power of God’s Word, described as living, active, and sharper than any sword. Nothing is hidden from God, and it’s His truth that exposes what’s really in our hearts. The invitation is clear: stop running, stop performing, and step into the rest only Jesus can give—a rest that both comforts and convicts.

In this episode, Pastor David Maestas walks through Hebrews 3, where the writer urges believers not to repeat the mistakes of Israel in the wilderness. Though they witnessed God’s power firsthand, their hearts became hard through unbelief and rebellion. The warning is clear: spiritual hardness doesn’t happen all at once—it forms gradually when we stop trusting, stop listening, and stop obeying. Pastor David challenges us to examine our hearts daily and to encourage one another so we don’t fall into the same trap. Faithfulness is a community effort and a daily decision. When our hearts begin to close off, we risk missing the rest and peace God has promised. The message is sobering but hopeful: there’s still time to listen, respond, and turn back.

130 | The Silent Danger of the Spiritual Drift
In this episode, Pastor David Maestas unpacks the urgent warning found in Hebrews 2: don’t drift away. The writer calls believers to pay careful attention to what they’ve heard so they don’t slowly slip into spiritual apathy. It’s not loud rebellion that pulls most people from God—it’s neglect. The chapter also highlights the humanity of Jesus, who stepped into suffering to rescue us, becoming our faithful and merciful high priest. Pastor David reminds us that spiritual drift happens when we stop listening, stop anchoring ourselves in truth, and start coasting. But Jesus didn’t coast—He came to earth, endured suffering, and paid the highest price to bring us back. This episode is a wake-up call: if Jesus didn’t ignore our need for rescue, we shouldn’t ignore His voice.

In this episode, Pastor David Maestas explores Joshua 21–22, where the tribes of Israel receive their promised inheritance and begin to settle into the land. But when the eastern tribes build an altar near the Jordan, it sparks fear and misunderstanding among the others, almost leading to civil war. What was meant as a symbol of unity is mistaken for rebellion, revealing how quick we can be to assume the worst without seeking understanding. Pastor David uses this story to reflect on how we often build “scarecrows”—false threats based on fear, insecurity, or assumptions. Instead of confronting one another in humility and grace, we react in suspicion.
