TCNW 870: Mayberry Christmas to All 2025 Host: Allan Newsome Running time: 1:01:29 It’s Christmas time here in Mayberry and time for the annual Christmas episode. The Andy Griffith Show had only one episode centered around any holiday and that holiday was Christmas. Fans have watched that episode over and over seeing as Ben Weaver tries to get arrested so he can spend Christmas in jail with the Taylor’s, the Muggins’, and Miss Ellie. It always plucks on to our hearts when we see Ben singing outside that courthouse cell window. Since the podcast began, Two Chairs has tried to bring back the warm feeling from The Andy Griffith Show as we go through Mayberry related memories of Christmas time. We also try to make a new memory or two in the process. We have a special guest back again this year from over in Dodge City. His name is Festus Haggen and he has a really good story to tell about Santa. There’s a story called “The Fife Before Christmas” by my friend Rik Roberts who played “Barney” to my “Floyd” in the Mayberry Man movie and Mayberry Man series. We have a favorite of mine by Charlie Monk called “Andy and Opie Christmas” that brings back memories of a small town Christmas that sure reminds me of Mayberry. We hear from Elinor Donahue about recording “Away in a Manger” with Andy then we hear her sing just that. We have a great song with lyrics written by Russell Estes called “A Mayberry Christmas” that does a wonderful job of taking us back to our hometown. For a bit more Christmas music, we’ll play my 2022 Mayberry Christmas card featuring images from Mayberry Man the Series. TCNW 867: Real Flying Cloud Host: Allan Newsome Running time: 0:51:36 I received a question from “Who’s Been Messin’ Up the Bulletin Board?” Chapter member, Larry Grainger asking: Do you or some of your listeners know what this line means, from “Citizens Arrest?” ANDY: Yeah. Misdemeanor charge of disturbing the peace. Drove down main street with a cutout open and a real flying cloud. If you don’t immediately recognize that line of dialog, you can be forgiven….mainly because I didn’t remember it myself so if you don’t recall it right away, I’ll feel better. The quote kicks off from the first scene of Season 4, Episode 11, called “Citizen’s Arrest” (it first aired back on December 2, 1963, which is a whopping 63 years ago from when this podcast drops). In this episode, Deputy Barney Fife, played by Don Knotts, is digging through some dusty old arrest records from past Mayberry sheriffs at the courthouse. He starts reading out loud one of those old misdemeanor charges from way back when. We’ll answer this question and provide a lot for you to think about as we hit the stories in the . TCNW 855: Letter to Opie Host: Allan Newsome Running time: 0:30:00 During the Mayberry Meetup 2025, attendee Julie Sipe was inspired by the events and the things she was experiencing to sit down and write a letter to Opie. She wrote it as if Opie were a real person who had been among those who had impacted her life in positive ways. She told of lessons she had learned from watching Opie and his dad deal with bullies and spoiled kids, help a friend that perhaps didn’t have as good a life as she might have, love their neighbor as themselves, take responsibility and stand on their own two legs, and so many impacts in her life. On Sunday morning of the Meetup, we gathered for a Mayberry Bible study lesson and as part of it she shared this “Letter to Opie” with those able to attend. It was touching and I reached out to see if she were share it with all of us here on the podcast. Thank you, Julie, for being willing to share this wonderful piece of yourself with your Mayberry family. (S2.E14) We’ll play Mayberry trivia all about “Keeper of the Flame.” Plot Summary Keeper of the Flame: Opie is accepted as a member of a secret society called The Wildcats after he takes a sacred oath never to reveal the club secrets. Given the job of Keeper of the Flame, Opie is fingered as the guilty party when the barn that the club meets in burns to the ground. The fire was actually started by the barn’s owner, farmer and moonshiner Jubal Foster. Not knowing this, Andy takes responsibility for the fire and is about to pay Foster for the value of the barn when Barney, having stumbled upon and unknowingly consumed some of Foster’s moonshine, staggers out drunk. TCNW 851: If I Met Andy Host: Allan Newsome Running time: 0:27:58 I’ve been going through old files on my computer and came across a poem by a person with the username “Al Becker” from 2001. This poem really makes you think about what it would be like to meet not only Andy but many of the cast members from The Andy Griffith Show. What would your say to them? How would you feel when you met them? I’ve been lucky to have met so many of our friends from Mayberry and I can say this poem helps me to remember those wonderful times. I also ran across some video from 1999 that I’ve shown here on Two Chairs way back in April 2012. I thought it might be worth sharing again. Andy Griffith appeared for the first time on the Grand Ole Opry back on November 13, 1999. Andy was there to present fellow Tar Heel Earl Scruggs with a North Carolina Hall of Fame award. When Andy joined Earl on stage and he received an extended standing ovation. Here even said, “I ‘preciate it” and then told a barbershop joke that George Lindsey had first shared with him years ago. Then Andy, with Earl and company backing him (and playing a guitar he used on The Andy Griffith Show) played and sang “Whoa Mule,” (also called “Flop Eared Mule”). Andy had performed that song with the Country Boys on The Andy Griffith Show episode “Mayberry on Record.” Enjoy the memory We’ll do a few trivia questions as well. TCNW 847: 23rd Psalm by Barney Host: Allan Newsome Running time: 0:31:20 I’ve been looking through old videos the last week or so and ran across a wonderful routine that David “The Mayberry Deputy” Browning and I did back in September 2015. A whole group of tribute artist gathered at Bellevue Baptist Church near Memphis, TN to perform a play written by David called “Ernest T’s Rock Concert.” A portion of the play, this segment called 23rd Psalms, was written by Joe Gritton. Podcast listeners might remember the name Joe Gritton (known around the Mayberry internet world as “The Untrained Voice” ) as the writer of several episodes of Two Chairs featuring Bert Miller and Floyd Lawson. Joe has passed away but what he wrote still impacts the lives of us Mayberry fans. The first of Joe’s podcast episodes was way back in episode 17 of Two Chairs called, “” and there have been several more “old time radio” type scripts by Joe since. TCNW 846: Happy Valley, Shazam As I mentioned last episode, on a recent trip to TAGSRWC HQ in Nashville, I was presented a tub full of articles, papers, stories, and more. As I was going though the papers, I found a great “Howard’s Notes” article from 1997 sent into TAGSRWC HQ by The Mayberry Texans chapter. This one was about Happy Valley. You know…what Chief Noogatuck said he’d call the valley that contained Mayberry. We’ll learn about that valley on this episode. I have also been thinking about “catchphrases” fans have grown to love and where did they originate. This episode we’ll look for answers to those questions related to Gomer’s “Shazam” and Barney’s “Nip it in the bud.” We’ll go over some fun Mayberry trivia questions from Paul Mulik and related to things Floyd says. As I was going though the papers, I found a great story from 1994 sent into TAGSRWC HQ by The Mayberry Texans chapter. It was about Pilot Mountain, or as Mayberry fans know it best, Pilot Mountain, N.C. This history lesson for both the fictional Mt. Pilot and the actual Pilot Mountain is something I believe fans will enjoy. This being Independence Day week here in the U.S.A., I did a little research on characters and actors from The Andy Griffith Show to try and determine those that had served in the military. I realize that July 4th is not really about honoring our military but I figure there’s never a bad time to do so. I’ll present what I learned and ask for all of you to help me crowdsource information on cast and crew to develop a more complete list that we can publish on the site. (S2.E11) We’ll play Mayberry trivia all about The Pickle Story. Plot Summary The Pickle Story: It’s canning time again, and Aunt Bee has put up another batch of pickles. After realizing the only thing they’re good for is killing flies brave enough to land on them, Andy and Barney decide to substitute store-bought for her homemade and hand out the originals to travelers passing through Mayberry. After the switch, Bee decides to enter her pickles in the county fair. Unfortunately, the perennial winner is Clara Johnson, Bee’s best friend, and she has her heart set on winning her 12th blue ribbon in a row. Andy and Barney have no choice but to get rid of all eight jars before she can enter, so they eat night and day until all the pickles are gone. They do their work proudly, but Bee decides that since the boys liked them so much, she will make a double batch.
