Episode 547 - Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey Is Cinema at Its Finest Doug saw The Odyssey on opening weekend. Justin saw it the following Wednesday in IMAX 70mm. They both walked out saying the same thing: that is cinema at its finest. The full review is here. Justin's IMAX 70mm experience gets the full breakdown first. Every frame deliberately composed, the sheer amount of visual information on screen, the walk back to see the giant film spools running the projector. Then the film itself: what Nolan got right about scale, spectacle, and practical effects. The Cyclops was built using a combination of a massive puppet for the actors to work around and a real actor in full prosthetics and makeup on a scaled-down set, composited together the old-school way. The giants were played by actual seven-foot-tall people standing next to a stunt double under five feet tall. No CGI shortcut. No painted-in crowd. A thousand extras on the day they shot the Land of the Dead. Jon Bernthal in the water for half a day, approaching hypothermia, refusing to come out until they had the shot. Episode 545 - Doug’s Daughter Binged the Hunger Games and Focused on All the Wrong Things Doug’s daughter watched all four Hunger Games films in the span of about a week, and her takeaways were something else entirely. During the emotional final scene of Mockingjay Part Two, while Katniss and Peeta are shown living out a quiet life with their children, her primary concern was the gender of a background baby who has approximately three seconds of screen time and zero bearing on anything. She also forgot what propaganda meant two minutes after Doug explained it, needed a full pause-and-debrief when Johanna Mason got naked in an elevator, and spent a significant portion of Catching Fire asking questions that the movie was about to answer on its own. Doug is coping. The full debrief covers what she liked, what confused her, what she's going to ask about Se7en when the time comes ("What's lust, Dad?"), and the ever-growing list of films Doug is planning to work through with her next. Jaws, the full X-Men series, Knives Out, and eventually Deadpool when she's old enough to understand the references. It is substantial. The word "nerfed" was used in a sentence and everyone understood what it meant. Then the new game: Doug pulls Urban Dictionary terms including Canon Event, 404 Coded, Soft Blocking IRL, Noodle Groove, and Oil Up, and Justin has to figure out what they mean. Justin's definition of Noodle Groove involves falling asleep face down on sand and being dragged by his friends. It is not correct. It is better. And for years, he's been waiting for the moment his daughter was ready. This Father's Day weekend, it happened, but not before they worked their way through Batman Begins first. The Batman Begins debrief alone is worth the price of admission: Natalie still doesn't understand why Bruce Wayne's parents had to die and genuinely wondered whether Batman was going to kill Rachel and Alfred in the film. She also thought that Batman can, apparently, talk to bats. Then came The Dark Knight. Doug prepped her on the Joker's philosophy, the importance of Batman's no-kill rule, and the practical effects behind the hospital explosion, which Doug and Jill actually witnessed being filmed when they lived downtown Chicago. Natalie handled the pencil scene with more composure than expected. She processed the ferry sequence. She understood the stakes, and spent the entire climax waiting for Bane to show up. And when it was over, she looked at her dad and said: "I see why you like it." Ten years. Worth every second. Also this episode: a genuinely great question — if you could go back to high school or college and take one class again with everything you know now, which class would you choose? Justin picks social studies, psychology, astronomy, and a very specific European history class he completely wasted. Doug picks management 101 with a professor he truly despised and would absolutely challenge every single day, and seventh grade PE, where his coach regularly called him names that would end careers today.
