One Single Story
One Single Story is a weekly podcast from Open Door Church to help the church engage with the Bible outside of Sunday morning. Currently, we are going through one book of the Bible each week and focusing on a theme in each. Why One Single Story? We believe that the Bible is one single story from beginning to end. It is the story of Jesus Christ: why we need Him, that He was coming, came, died, rose again, ascended to heaven, and today lives with us. For this, we are thankful. Wages vs. Gift: How Grace Justifies the Ungodly - Romans 4:1-12 | July 17, 2026
Welcome to today's edition of One Single Story! Pastor Stephen Mizell and Pastor Jay Rivenbark are joined by Pastor Alyssa Bream for a rich conversation in Romans 4:1-12, exploring the difference between wages and gifts, and what it means to be justified by faith rather than works. Scripture Focus: Romans 4:1-12 - Paul defends the doctrine of justification by faith, using Abraham as his central example. He shows that Abraham was credited righteousness through faith before he was circumcised, proving that God's grace has never depended on religious ritual or performance, for Jew or Gentile alike. In This Episode: How our cultural "bootstraps" work ethic distorts our understanding of grace Why viewing God as an employer instead of a Father leads us astray The shocking truth that God "justifies the ungodly" and what that phrase means across Bible translations Wrestling honestly with which sins we struggle to believe are truly forgivable What justification really means: "just as if you had never done it" Why Abraham's circumcision timeline matters for both Jews and Gentiles How faith always comes before outward signs, in the Old Testament and the New Key Quote: "Justification means just as if you had never done it. You have been made right, or righteous. And whether it is pride or greed or lying or adultery... the same act of forgiveness and justification happens." Justification by Faith: How Grace Levels the Playing Field - Romans 3:9-31 | July 16, 2026
Join Pastor Stephen Mizell, Pastor Jay Rivenbark, and Pastor Alyssa Bream for today's conversation through Romans 3:9-31, one of the most pivotal passages in all of Scripture. As Romans turns from exposing human sinfulness to declaring the way of justification, this episode unpacks what it means that righteousness comes not through the law, but through faith in Jesus Christ. Scripture Focus: Romans 3:9-31 - Paul builds his case that all people, Jew and Gentile alike, stand guilty before God, then reveals the solution: justification by faith apart from the works of the law. This passage is the theological hinge of Romans, moving from the diagnosis of universal sin to the good news of grace freely given through Christ's sacrifice. In This Episode: Why the law was never meant to save us, but to reveal our need for a Savior Understanding total depravity - we're not just sick, we're spiritually dead A Leonard Ravenhill quote on why Jesus came to raise the dead, not improve the bad How the cross allows God to be both "just and the justifier" of those who believe Why justification by faith erases every cultural, racial, and social divide Stories from the mission field in India and Argentina on the unifying power of shared faith in Christ What it means that salvation is a gift, not a performance-based achievement Key Quote: "When human performance stands bankrupt before the court of heaven, the righteousness of God stands in to write a check we could never clear." Circumcision of the Heart, Assurance, and God's Faithfulness - Romans 2:25 –3:8 | July 15, 2026
Welcome back to One Single Story! Join Pastor Stephen Mizell, Pastor Jay Rivenbark, and Pastor Alyssa Bream as they dig into Romans 2:25 through 3:8, wrestling with what it really means to belong to God — is it about outward religious markers, or a genuine transformation of the heart? This episode tackles heart transformation versus behavior modification, the assurance of our relationship with God, and the philosophical puzzle of whether our sin somehow gives God more glory. Scripture Focus: Romans 2:25-3:8 - Paul confronts the Jewish reliance on circumcision as a badge of identity, arguing that true belonging to God is a matter of the heart, not an external ritual. He then turns to address whether human unfaithfulness can cancel out God's faithfulness, and closes by dismantling the twisted logic that sin might actually benefit God by showcasing His righteousness. In This Episode: Why circumcision became a "badge" for the Jewish people, and why outward compliance alone falls short The danger of measuring spiritual growth only by attendance, giving, or visible behavior How the Holy Spirit produces a genuine change of heart rather than mere rule-following Wrestling with doubt: does personal failure cancel God's faithfulness? A powerful sharecropper illustration about assurance being God's grip on us, not our grip on Him Breaking down the "cheap grace" argument that sinning glorifies God Understanding that God redeems evil in spite of it, never because of it Key Quote: "I tripped a couple more times, but I never failed because the tether was dependent on his holding, not my holding... the assurance we have is not based on our behavior, because that's useless. The assurance we have is based on his ability to hold us." Why We Judge Others to Justify Our Own Sin - Romans 2:1-24 | July 14, 2026
Pastor Stephen Mizell, Pastor Jay Rivenbark, and Pastor Alyssa Bream open Romans 2, exploring why we judge others' sins to excuse our own, how God's patience is meant to lead us to repentance, and how our hypocrisy shapes the world's view of God. Scripture Focus: Romans 2:1-24 - Paul confronts the self-righteous, warning that knowing the law doesn't exempt anyone from its standard. In This Episode: Why we deflect from our own sin by pointing at others "Big rock" sins vs. quieter internal sins like pride and envy Mistaking God's patience for approval How hypocrisy in leaders damages God's reputation Key Quote: "The kindness is meant to draw us into God... we don't think of God's kindness as something to become comfortable with." When Truth Gets Suppressed - Romans 1:18-32 | July 13, 2026
Welcome to another episode of One Single Story! Host Pastor Stephen Mizell and Pastor Jay Rivenbark are joined by Pastor Alyssa Bream for a thought-provoking discussion on Romans 1:18-32, exploring what it means to suppress the truth of God and the subtle ways we trade the Creator's glory for idols of our own making. Scripture Focus: Romans 1:18-32 - Paul lays the theological foundation for the book of Romans with a sobering indictment of human sin. In this passage, he explains how people willfully suppress the truth about God despite creation making His existence obvious, and describes the downward spiral that occurs when God "gives people over" to their own desires. In This Episode: Understanding the difference between willful sin and actively encouraging others to sin How suppressing truth (like the tobacco industry hiding cigarette dangers) mirrors spiritual deception Why "entrapment evangelism" and pure apologetics often fail to lead people to genuine faith Modern-day idolatry: elevating personalities, denominations, family, and political movements above God The warning sign that "if God never contradicts you, you have an idol" Unpacking the three-fold repetition of "God abandoned them" and what it reveals about divine judgment Why God allowing us to experience the full consequences of sin can actually be an act of mercy Key Quote: "The safest place to live is fully surrendered to a God that you cannot escape." Together they unpack the quiet, unseen work of gatekeepers and doorkeepers in God's house, the tragic downfall of King Saul, and how God uses painful leadership transitions to make room for what He wants to do next. Scripture Focus: 1 Chronicles 9:1 – 10:14 - This passage closes out the genealogical prologue of Chronicles, highlighting the temple gatekeepers who guarded access to God's house and the various servants who supported temple worship, before recounting Saul's death on Mount Gilboa after he sought guidance from a medium instead of the Lord. In This Episode: Why the temple gatekeepers and behind-the-scenes servants in 1 Chronicles 9 matter to God's kingdom How faithfulness, not visibility, determines true significance in ministry Practical ways Open Door Church honors unseen volunteers, from baptism teams to cleaning crews What it means that the gatekeepers were armed Levites entrusted with guarding access points Saul's death in 1 Chronicles 10 and his fatal choice to consult a medium rather than seek the Lord Modern-day "mediums" leaders turn to instead of God, including culture, politics, and artificial intelligence How to use AI as a tool without letting it replace discernment and hard work Navigating painful leadership transitions and successions, from Saul and David to the church today Key Quote: "Significance in God's kingdom is really determined by faithfulness and not visibility." In this raw and honest conversation, the hosts explore grief and mourning, the complexity of family dynamics, God's covenant faithfulness in the middle of human brokenness, and how different gifts and strengths work together to build up the local church. Scripture Focus: 1 Chronicles 7:1 – 8:40 - These chapters trace the genealogies of Issachar, Benjamin, Naphtali, Manasseh, Ephraim, and Asher, pausing to record Ephraim's grief over his slain sons before turning to a detailed focus on the tribe of Benjamin, including the line that leads to King Saul. In This Episode: Why God pauses a genealogical record to include Ephraim's raw grief over his sons The complexity of family dynamics when children from the same home turn out very differently A personal, present-day story of grief and the tension of showing up for a grieving friend Why grieving the loss of a child or grandchild is uniquely heavy for parents How God's meticulous preservation of Benjamin's line, despite Saul's failure, reveals His grace toward broken legacies The difference between God's commitment to us and our commitment to Him How the distinct strengths of the tribes picture the way spiritual gifts should work together in the local church The call to identify, empower, and release people into their God-given gifts Key Quote: "Let God handle the broken pieces of your legacy. Welcome to today's edition of One Single Story. Pastor Stephen Mizell and Pastor Jay Rivenbark are joined by Pastor Wendy Korbusieski for a conversation about short-term faithfulness, why worship must be the centerpiece of church culture, and why the Levites never received a plot of land of their own. Scripture Focus: 1 Chronicles 5:18-6:81 - This passage covers the military victories of the eastern tribes before pivoting to their eventual exile due to spiritual adultery, then shifts into a detailed account of the tribe of Levi, mapping out the priests, temple musicians, and cities allocated to them throughout Israel. In This Episode: Why continued obedience matters more than past victories, and why we're often most vulnerable right after a win The contrast between God answering Israel's prayers in battle and their later exile for unfaithfulness How true faith is a daily, lifelong endeavor rather than a single moment of crisis-driven decision Why worship and spiritual leadership must be prioritized over administrative structure and programming in the church The tension between spiritual passion and godly structure, and how both are needed to protect against abuse and manipulation The strategic reason the Levites were scattered among the other tribes instead of given their own territory How dependence on the obedience of others shaped the Levites' ministry and kept them from self-reliance Key Quote: "We cry out in crisis, but we compromise in comfort." Scripture Focus: 1 Chronicles 4:5–5:17 - Jabez's famous prayer, Reuben's forfeited birthright, and the eastern tribes' choice to settle short of the Promised Land. In This Episode: Reuben's costly choice and its ripple effect on future generations Jabez and why our pain never limits what God can do Discerning godly expansion from worldly greed through motive The trap of "good enough" and partial obedience Key Quote: "Don't settle for the edge of the promise when the Father is inviting you into the center of his promise." Genealogies, Identity, and the Promise of the King - 1 Chronicles 2:18–4:4 | July 6, 2026
Welcome to One Single Story. Pastor Stephen Mizell and Pastor Jay Rivenbark are joined by Pastor Wendy Korbusieski. Today we're in 1 Chronicles 2:18-4:4 — a passage full of genealogies. These family records mattered deeply to Israel. This community had just returned from seventy years in Babylonian exile. They were broken, displaced, and asking: do we still belong to the promise? Genealogies answered that. They established identity, settled land claims, and determined who could serve in the priesthood. But there's a deeper lesson here too. Freedom from exile wasn't enough on its own — they still had to reestablish who they were. It's the same today: freedom from addiction, or sin, or a broken season, doesn't automatically give you a new identity. That has to be rebuilt in Christ. Notice too that these genealogies don't just list kings — they name craftsmen, ordinary families, everyday people. That's a reminder that faithfulness in daily work and calling matters to God, even when it isn't glamorous. And Judah's placement here — out of birth order, out of kingship order — points forward. It's a quiet reminder that a King was still coming from David's line: Jesus. Here's our key thought for today: when human history gets reduced to a list of names, God looks for a single heart bold enough to pray for Him to do great things. Thanks for joining us. We'll see you next time on One Single Story.

Pastor Stephen Mizell and Pastor Jay Rivenbark along with Pastor Sheryl Daughety unpack Proverbs 18:11-12, where Solomon contrasts the rich man's wealth, imagined as an unscalable fortress, with the truth that pride goes before destruction while humility precedes honor. In This Episode: How good intentions can drift into self-sufficiency and pride The "paper fortress" of wealth and why it feels safer than it is The Rich Fool parable and the danger of self-reliant counsel Why humility must come before honor, in ministry and in life Key Quote: "Every wall built by human money will eventually crumble, but the life lowered in humility is completely safe from the crash." In This Episode: What separates life-giving speech from shallow noise How favoritism quietly creeps into leadership and how to guard against it Why the inner well of wisdom in verse four is the direct foundation for the justice demanded in verse five Key Quote: "When your internal well is filled by the Spirit of God, you are completely anchored against the shifting winds of human favoritism. When Life Feels Like a Drought - Psalm 143:1-12 | June 25, 2026
Pastor Stephen Mizell and Pastor Jay Rivenbark are joined by Pastor Alyssa Bream for a conversation from Psalm 143 -- the seventh and final penitential psalm -- exploring what it means to walk through spiritual dry seasons and how intentional remembering can anchor our faith when life feels relentless. Scripture Focus: Psalm 143:1-12 - David cries out under relentless attack, his spirit fainting and his soul living in darkness as if in the grave, yet turns his eyes toward God's faithfulness. In This Episode: How dry seasons can overwhelm even the strongest believers The difference between unhealthy nostalgia and faith-fueled remembering Why recalling past hard seasons reminds us that difficult times are never permanent Leaning into God with enough trust to believe the rain will come again Key Quote: "There are places in my life today that are flooded with grace that were meant to be dry. If I can just remember, when I am in a dry spot, that God's always faithful -- that's enough to move forward." Finding God Sufficient in the Cave - Psalm 142:1-7 | June 24, 2026
Welcome to One Single Story! Pastor Stephen Mizell and Pastor Jay Rivenbark are joined by Pastor Alyssa Bream for a conversation centered on Psalm 142, David's raw, unfiltered prayer written from a literal cave while fleeing Saul. Together, they explore what it looks like to cry out to God in your most isolated moments — and what it means to find Him sufficient there. Scripture Focus: Psalm 142:1-7 — Written when David was hiding in a cave, this psalm captures the honest cry of someone overwhelmed, yet still turning to the only One who knows the way forward. In This Episode: The difference between a biblical lament and toxic grumbling — and why one moves us toward God while the other keeps us stuck Navigating caves that are self-imposed versus those outside our control How leaders can face the unique loneliness of ministry without slipping into bitterness and burnout Why Elijah's choice to abandon his support system is a warning for all of us Key Quote: "When you lose your platform and find yourself in a cave, you discover the platform was only temporary. The rock is eternal." One Single Story drops every weekday, walking through the One Year Bible with honest conversation and pastoral insight. Guarding Your Lips and Keeping Your Eyes on God - Psalm 141:1-10 | June 23, 2026
Pastor Stephen Mizell and Pastor Jay Rivenbark are joined by Pastor Alyssa Bream for today's lesson from Psalm 141, an evening psalm of personal discipline in which David prays not just against external enemies but against the internal pulls that draw us away from God. In this episode the team explores why guarding your lips is one of the most critical prayers you can pray in seasons of conflict, how subtle drift toward evil begins long before outright sin, and what it practically looks like to keep your eyes fixed on God when chaos demands your full attention. Protection from the Poison of the Tongue - Psalm 140:1-13 | June 22, 2026
Join Pastor Stephen Mizell, Pastor Jay Rivenbark, and Pastor Alyssa Bream for this episode of One Single Story as they dig into Psalm 140, a raw and honest prayer from David written during a season when he was hunted and slandered. The hosts unpack what it looks like to ask God for protection from the poison of the tongue, to recognize the hidden traps that line our daily path, and to trust the Lord's justice instead of taking matters into our own hands. Scripture Focus: Psalm 140:1-13 - David's prayer for protection from violent men and the dangerous power of words, written during a period when he was being hunted and slandered. The psalm moves from a cry for personal protection to pointed prayers against his enemies, and closes with confident trust in the Lord's justice for the oppressed. In This Episode: The debated meaning behind David's prayer to "heap burning coals" on his enemies, and how it compares to the same phrase in Proverbs and Romans Why David focuses so heavily on the tongue when praying for protection against violent men How gossip, criticism, and careless words sow division long before any physical conflict begins The subtle, concealed nature of spiritual traps, including apathy, busyness, and poor choices made while trying to do the right thing The difference between being busy and being effective, and how a full schedule can crowd out room for God Learning to trust God's timing and justice rather than seeking personal vengeance How staying confident in God's justice allows believers to remain silent when everyone else is rattling on Key Quote: "Words show up long before they are weapons." Fasting, Spiritual Confirmation & Confronting Opposition - Acts 12:24–13:15 | June 19, 2026
Welcome back to One Single Story! Today Pastor Stephen Mizell and Pastor Jay Rivenbark are joined by Pastor Wendy Korbusieski for a conversation on Acts 12 and 13. The team digs into the power of corporate fasting, what it means to have both a heavenly call and an earthly confirmation, and how to confront spiritual opposition with boldness and truth. Scripture Focus: Acts 12:24–13:15 - In this passage, the church at Antioch is worshiping and fasting when the Holy Spirit sets apart Barnabas and Saul for ministry. The text also recounts Paul's direct confrontation with the sorcerer Elymas, showing what it looks like to stand against spiritual opposition in the power of the Holy Spirit. In This Episode: How corporate fasting and worship help believers hear the Spirit's specific direction Why the church at Antioch's depth of gifted leaders points to a mission bigger than itself The connection between fasting, prayer, and giving as core spiritual disciplines Jesus taught Why both a heavenly call and an earthly confirmation matter when discerning God's voice Four observations on how Paul responded to spiritual opposition with truth and discernment Why confronting evil leaves no room for nuance, while conflict with people calls for grace A real-life example of calling out pettiness disguised as a spiritual decision Key Quote: "Whatever you feed is going to take control of your life. Praying Without Expecting an Answer - Acts 12:1-23 | June 18, 2026
Pastor Stephen Mizell, Pastor Jay Rivenbark, and Pastor Wendy Korbusieski continue their journey through the One Year Bible with a look at Acts 12, where James is martyred and Peter is miraculously freed from prison, even as the church praying for him is stunned that their prayer actually worked. Scripture Focus: Acts 12:1-23 - Herod's persecution of the early church, Peter's imprisonment and angelic rescue, and his downfall after accepting worship that belonged to God. In This Episode: Praying out of duty versus praying in real faith Making sense of unequal outcomes when one believer suffers and another is delivered Why deliverance comes with unfinished work, not a free pass Guarding against pride and redirecting praise to God Key Quote: "The gates of a prison are no match for earnest prayers of a church. But make sure you're ready to open the door when God answers your prayer." The Birth of the Sending Church - Acts 11:1-30 | June 17, 2026
Welcome to One Single Story! Join Pastor Stephen Mizell, Pastor Jay Rivenbark and Pastor Wendy Korbusieski for a brief, conversational walk through today's reading in the One Year Bible. In today's episode, the team digs into Acts 11, exploring how the Jerusalem church moved from criticism to celebration, what it looks like to become a sending church, and how believers stay steadfast for the long haul. Scripture Focus: Acts 11:1-30 - Peter returns to Jerusalem and faces a grievance committee over his decision to eat with Gentiles in Cornelius's household. After hearing his account, the Jerusalem believers move from objection to praise. The scene then shifts to Antioch, where the gospel spreads to Gentiles, Barnabas encourages new believers to remain true to the Lord, and the term "Christian" is used for the first time. In This Episode: How the name "Christian" began as an insult in Antioch but became a badge of honor for early believers Why listening to the facts and applying spiritual discernment helps move a community from criticism to celebration Peter's example of defending the truth without backing down from controversy The difference between a receiving church and a sending church, and why outward focus matters How a predicted famine motivated the early church toward proactive generosity What it means to build steadfastness and endurance over time rather than expecting instant transformation A closing challenge: what nickname would the world give your church today Key Quote: "Forward focus ensures present provision." God Shows No Favoritism - Acts 10:24-48 | June 16, 2026
Welcome to another episode of One Single Story! Today, Pastor Stephen Mizell is joined by co-hosts Pastor Jay Rivenbark and Pastor Wendy Korbusieski for a powerful conversation in the book of Acts, exploring how God shows no favoritism, how the Holy Spirit interrupts our plans, and how His grace continually astonishes us through the people He saves. Scripture Focus: Acts 10:24-48 - This passage covers Peter's visit to Cornelius's house, a significant moment where Peter, a strict Jew, enters a Gentile's home in obedience to God's vision. Peter declares that God shows no favoritism, the Holy Spirit falls on the Gentiles present, and they are baptized, marking a pivotal expansion of the gospel beyond Jewish believers. In This Episode: Peter's obedience in showing up without knowing the full plan What truly qualifies someone as an "apostle" according to Scripture How "God shows no favoritism" should shape local outreach and evangelism Recognizing and overcoming personal prejudices and blind spots Staying sensitive to the Holy Spirit's movement within structured church services The difference between church structure as "tracks" versus a "cage" Stories of God's grace astonishing the hosts through unexpected salvations Key Quote: "Structure should be tracks, not a cage. Structure should be tracks that you run on - you're moving from point A to point B, not a cage that we got to keep it inside of." Breaking Down Blind Spots - Acts 10:1-23 | June 15, 2026
Join Pastor Stephen Mizell, Pastor Jay Rivenbark, and Pastor Wendy Korbusieski for today's edition of One Single Story as they dig into Acts chapter 10, the powerful account of Cornelius and Peter. This conversation explores spiritual blind spots, cultural bias, and what it truly means to follow God as revelation leads to transformation. Scripture Focus: Acts 10:1-23 - This passage marks the beginning of the Gentile Pentecost, recounting how God simultaneously prepared Cornelius, a devout Roman centurion, and Peter, a Jewish apostle, to break down barriers between Jew and Gentile and open the gospel to all nations. In This Episode: How Cornelius's prayers and gifts to the poor were received by God as an act of worship, even before he was part of the covenant promise Peter's vision and the command not to call unclean what God has called clean Identifying our own cultural and religious blind spots and the importance of inviting honest feedback from others How developing real relationships with people we may have prejudged can completely change our perspective The difference between being religious and being truly saved, including sobering statistics on self-identified Christians versus true disciples Cornelius's story as a picture of being judged according to the knowledge we have, and the call to respond when new revelation comes Why the fear of the Lord is the beginning of the journey, not the end Key Quote: "God will not use your biases to build the kingdom. So don't let your old sheets of tradition keep you from a house full of new souls." When Everything Is Not Enough - 1 Kings 9:1–10:29 | June 12, 2026
Welcome to One Single Story. Join Pastor Stephen Mizell, Pastor Jay Rivenbark, and Pastor Sheryl Daughety as they explore one of the most pivotal passages in Solomon's story -- a moment when outward greatness masked an inward drift from the Lord. Today we're in 1 Kings 9:1–10:29 -- the absolute peak of Solomon's empire. Gold everywhere. Foreign queens paying tribute. Military power expanding. By every outward measure, this is the greatest moment in Israel's history. But underneath all of it, the seeds of compromise are already taking root. We dig into one of the most sobering questions in Solomon's story: what happens when you have accomplished everything you set out to do? When there is no next dream, no next challenge -- just unlimited wealth and time to fill? Solomon broke all three of God's explicit prohibitions for Israel's kings found in Deuteronomy 17, and he did not do it all at once. It was a drift. Slow, subtle, and self-justified every step of the way. The warning God gives in 1 Kings 9:6-9 is just as important as any promise He makes -- and it comes at the very height of Solomon's success, because that is exactly when we stop listening. Success is the hardest test of character. It is easier to trust God when you have nothing than when you have everything. Welcome to One Single Story, Season 5. Pastor Stephen Mizell and Pastor Jay Rivenbark are joined by Pastor Sheryl Daughety. We're in First Kings Chapter 8, the dedication of Solomon's Temple, and we're exploring what it means that God chooses to dwell with his people. Scripture Focus: 1 Kings 8 - Solomon dedicates the temple in Jerusalem and offers one of the most sweeping prayers of intercession in all of Scripture. In This Episode: Why this moment is considered the climax of the entire Old Testament How God's daily presence should transform the way we see ordinary life and worship What Solomon's prayer teaches us about true intercession Solomon's remarkable prayer for the foreigner, and why the temple was always meant to be a lighthouse for the world Key Quote: "The temple was meant to be not a closed club, but a lighthouse for the world to be able to see. Solomon's Temple and the Pillars of Faith - 1 Kings 7:1-51 | June 10, 2026
Welcome to One Single Story, your weekday companion through the One Year Bible. Pastor Stephen Mizell and the team dive into 1 Kings 7, exploring Solomon's construction of the temple and palace - and what the details of this passage reveal about patience, drift, and the pillars of truth we stand on. In this episode, the team discusses what 480 years of waiting reveals about God's faithfulness, how Solomon's palace may mark the first subtle sign of spiritual drift, and the deeper meaning behind the two bronze pillars, Jachin and Boaz, that stood at the entrance to God's presence as a reminder that God establishes the work and gives the strength to finish it. Key Quote: "Every time a person walked into God's presence, they had to walk between the reminders that God is the one who starts the work, and he's the one who gives the power to finish it." The Builder and the Building - 1 Kings 5:1–6:38 | June 9, 2026
Pastor Stephen Mizell and Pastor Jay Rivenbark are joined by Pastor Sheryl Daughety for today's reading in 1 Kings 5-6. The group digs into the construction of Solomon's Temple, uncovering what it means to pursue excellence for the Kingdom, why God does His deepest work in us off-site and out of sight, and how to keep God at the center when the building gets all the attention. Scripture Focus: 1 Kings 5:1–6:38 - Solomon partners with King Hiram of Tyre, organizes tens of thousands of workers, and finishes every stone off-site so no hammer or chisel is heard at the Temple. Mid-construction, God interrupts with a simple reminder: obedience matters more than architecture. In This Episode: Common grace and partnerships - pursuing excellence for God without compromising convictions The silence at the Temple and what it reveals about God's hidden, preparatory work in our lives How to love God more than the structures we build in His name 1 Kings 6:11-13 - why obedience is the true dwelling place of God Key Quote: "God is more interested in the obedience of the builder than the beauty of the building." - Pastor Stephen Mizell One Single Story is a daily weekday podcast from Open Door Church in Edenton, North Carolina, offering brief conversational lessons from the One Year Bible reading plan. visitopendoor.com | onesinglestory.com Subscribe for new episodes every weekday. #OneYearBible #ChristianPodcast #BibleStudy #DailyDevotional #OpenDoorChurch #BiblicalEncouragement #ChristianLife #Scripture #Faith #FirstKings #SolomonsTemple #OldTestament

Welcome to One Single Story, where each weekday we offer a brief lesson from the One Year Bible. Hosts Pastor Stephen Mizell and Pastor Jay Rivenbark are joined by Pastor Sheryl Daughety as they explore 1 Kings 3:3–4:34 - and what it means to ask God for the right things. Solomon has just been established as king. Aware of the gap between his ability and his responsibility, he makes a remarkable request - not for wealth or power, but for a hearing heart to serve his people well. In this episode, the team unpacks why listening is the foundation of true wisdom, how to keep our requests aligned with God's priorities rather than our own comfort, and why God-given wisdom is one of the most magnetic evangelistic tools a believer can carry.
