PSP 135: The Difference Between Picky Eating and Extreme Picky Eating
Dealing with extreme picky eating can be a lonely journey. Barely anyone gets it. People will tell you all sorts of things. Some to lift you up and some to tear you down, but neither wind up being helpful. He won’t starve to death You should force him to eat (as if it was just that easy!) If he was my child… (that’s never a good sentence) Aren’t all kids kind of picky? You let her eat just that?! Ugh. I could go on and on. But it brings back too many bad memories. Kids have extreme picky eating for a variety of reasons. They can have sensory issues, fears of choking, mechanical and structural issues, intrusive thoughts around food… the list can go on and on. But often, we all have one common goal between us. We want our kids to eat. We want our kids to be healthy. This week on the AT Parenting Survival Podcast, I have invited my friend and go-to picky eating expert, Alisha Grogan, Pediatric OT, to talk to us about the difference between typical picky eating and extreme picky eating. She also has a free workshop series out this week that runs from 9/17/19 to 9/24/19 called The 2-Step Process for Moving Your Child from Picky Eater to Healthy Child. Click here to enroll now before it goes away. She is awesome: www.bit.ly/pickyeatingworkshop19 She offered some really good insight into picky eating in this episode!

PSP 134: Helping Kids Who Have a Fear of Bad Guys
Hands down the number one fear I deal with as a child therapist is the fear of bad guys. It isn’t surprising. I remember being a child myself, sitting in my bed, blanket up to my neck, wondering not if, but when would I be attacked. The fear is often dealt with platitudes like: I’m right here Who is going to hurt you Nothing has ever happened to you Why do you worry so much In this week’s AT Parenting Survival Podcast, I explore why those platitudes aren’t helpful and what to do and say instead. *** to get on waitlist for the Sleep Class go to: to get a free PDF on 15 of some of the Most Common Reasons Why Kids are Scared to Sleep, go to: To learn more about the sleep class go to: www.bit.ly/sleepclass19

PSP 133: How to Help a Child with Nightmares
If the brain can imagine it, nightmares can create it. That can be hard for a child whose brain is constantly coming up with the worst-case scenarios for every situation. And when a child with nightmares, especially an anxious child, has them often – they can start to fear sleep altogether. So how do you help your child with nightmares? Well, we can’t control whether they have them or not, but we can stack the deck in their favor. We can also teach them what to do afterwards, so they can get themselves back to sleep more easily. In this week’s AT Parenting Survival Podcast episode, I go into concrete tools you can use to ease your child into a relaxing sleep. I also go into how to teach kids to calm themselves and reset their brain, after a bad dream. PSP 130: Why Our Child’s Anxiety, OCD or Behaviors are Worse for Us
“We don’t see it, he’s great for us.” “Nope, we don’t have any issues with her.” “Anxiety? Are you sure?” “OCD? I never see him wash his hands.” (eye roll to that one) “He is a perfect angel when he is with me.” Ugh. These types of comments can make you doubt all that you know and see. Is it me? Am I causing her anxiety? Am I causing this behavior? Do I make his OCD worse? You are not alone. Parents everywhere are having these thoughts. They toss and turn before they go to sleep. They have pangs of doubt, guilt and anger when their child turns into a puddle for them and holds it together for everyone else. So what is going on? Well let’s put the parental guilt and shame down for a minute and look at some alternative perspectives. In this week’s AT Parenting Survival Podcast episode, I talk about why many of our kids with anxiety or OCD have the hardest time when they are us. And why it often has nothing to do with the parenting. *** This podcast is for informational purposes only and should not be used to replace the guidance of a qualified professional. PSP 128: Learn How Hormones Can Play a Role in Parental Anxiety
Do you suffer from some parental anxiety? Have you gotten more anxious as you’ve gotten older? Do you attribute it to the chaos and stress you experience raising kids with anxiety or OCD? Well, you might be missing one key culprit…hormones! As women we start to have hormonal changes as early as our mid-thirties. And with those changes can come, fatigue, weight gain, irritability and….you guessed it, anxiety. This topic is not in my wheelhouse, so I invited Hilary Rank, a Health and Wellness Coach and the creator of the Balance Effect Method, to break it down for us. She talks about how these hormonal shifts work and what we can do to reduce the symptoms that come with it. Hilary Rank is a Health & Wellness Coach for women over 40 and creator of the Balanced Effect Method. PSP 127: How to Help a Child with Lockdown Drills
The kids are huddled in the corner of the room. It is dark. It is quiet. They are told not to talk. They are told to hide behind objects and lock the classroom door. Some kids are shaking. Some kids have wide eyes. This is not an emergency situation. These are lockdown drills. This can be very unnerving for any child, but for anxious children this has the potential to cause ongoing fear and panic. So what should parents do? Many of us avoid the topic unless our kids bring it up. But with at least 32 states requiring monthly lockdown drills, many of our kids are exposed to these drills over 10 times a school year. These are important drills (sadly), but how do we minimize the ongoing trauma these drills can evoke? I brought in just the person to answer these questions. In this week’s AT Parenting Survival Podcast episode, I talk to Nancy Kislin, a psychotherapist and author of Lock Down: Talking to Your Kids About School Violence. She brought so much insight to this topic and offered some solid, concrete steps anyone can take to help their children. But don’t make the mistake of putting them in the same category with all your child’s other anxiety issues. Sensory related anxiety is different. And… it should be treated differently as well. Anxious kids tend to have more sensory issues. That’s really not surprising. The two issues tend to hang out together like long lost cousins. PSP 124: How Your Childhood Influences How You Parent an Anxious Child
You are learning how to be a parent from a very young age, even from toddlerhood. Seriously! Everything you see, every interaction you have, will impact how you parent your own children. This can be inspiring or daunting depending on what type of childhood you had. But regardless of whether it was good, bad or in between you get to decide how your childhood influences your parenting. This is especially true when you parent an anxious child. What triggers your own issues, your own memories? The first step is awareness. Awareness of what is driving your parenting and awareness what is stirring underneath. But the truth of the matter is, OCD will not improve significantly without ERP, Exposure Response Prevention. So what is ERP and how does it work? I invited Dr. Martin Hsia, the Clinical Director at the Cognitive Behavior Therapy Center of Southern California, to sit down with me to have a chat all about ERP in kids. PSP 118: What it’s Like Growing Up with OCD with John Tessitore
Have you ever wondered what your child with OCD is going through? What their life is like growing up with OCD? I had the pleasure of talking to John Tessitore, the founder of the JCK Foundation. He was willing to get raw with me and share some personal details of what life was like growing up with thoughts he hid from the outside world. He paints a picture of what it can feel like to think you are all alone and how he found hope and inspiration when his brother’s friend took him under his wing and shared that he, as well, had OCD. John has made it his mission to let others like him know that they are not alone. He created the JCK Foundation to spread knowledge and offer support to people with mental illness. The JCK Foundation offers programs that go into high schools and colleges to speak to students about mental illness and to offer them support and hope. If you know of a school that would benefit from JCK Foundation’s program click here. To support the Foundation and enable them to get the word of hope out to more students click here to donate: www.jckfoundation.org To watch John’s touching documentary about his friend John Kelly’s life battling OCD and his eventual passing click here: *** Interested in my AT Parenting Community Membership? Selective Mutism can hide behind labels like “shy” and often gets missed by parents, educators and even therapists. I had the pleasure of talking to Patsy Butterworth, a State Coordinator for Selective Mutism.org and a mom to a child with Selective Mutism. Patsy has been a huge advocate for her son through his journey. She now supports other parents, connecting them to resources and spreading knowledge about Selective Mutism. In my interview with Patsy, she helps us understand what Selective Mutism is and what it is not. She also talks about how to advocate for your child, get a proper diagnosis and how parents can help their child with Selective Mutism. PSP 115: Helping Kids with Moral OCD
Hearing your child confess thoughts that do not make sense can be heartbreaking. Moral OCD is one of the most confusing OCD themes a parent, and for that matter, a child, can experience. Kids with Moral OCD are bombarded with thoughts. What if I am a bad person? What if I did something bad? What if I do something bad? They can come at you with a barrage of questions that seem to never end. Do you think it is bad if I… I had this thought that… What if I… The need for reassurance and confessing is never ending. In this week’s podcast episode I am going to dive into the counterintuitive approach that helps kids with Moral OCD. *** To enroll in my new online mini-course, How to Teach Kids to Crush Moral OCD, go to Interested in my AT Parenting Community Membership? PSP 114: Supporting Dads Raising Anxious Kids with Larry Hagner
No one signs up for struggles. We all have our vision of what parenting will be. It usually does not involve a child with panic, fear and dread. It can be hard to pivot and alter your parental course. It can also be a challenge to pivot with a partner. Raising anxious kids is often counterintuitive. Many parents find they are not on the same page. Anxiety is rough on kids, but it can also be rough on marriages. I invited Larry Hagner from The Dad Edge Podcast to offer a perspective I don’t often talk about. The perspective of dads. What is it like to be a father raising a child with struggles? How can partners align without pointing fingers and being hurtful? Larry offers his insightful, humble perspective. He not only teaches us how to become better parents, he teaches us how to become better human beings. I thoroughly enjoyed my talk with him, and I know you will too. *** Learn more about Larry Hagner's awesome work at Interested in my AT Parenting Community Membership? I didn’t know the level of my anxiety until I brought little people into my world. It seemed like my anxiety just couldn’t hide under the weight of parental stress. That happens to many of us. We strive to become a better parent and we begin to realize that it is actually our own anxiety that is holding us back. PSP 112: Helping Your Sensitive Child Handle Mean People
I love my empathetic, kindhearted and intuitive little girl. She is the sparkle in everyone’s life. That is until my pretty flower wilts at the slightest tone, stare or comment that has a hint of meanness behind it. My sensitive child crumbles when the world is mean around her. Let’s not even talk about when the rudeness is directed at her. Many of us are raising a sensitive child. A sensitive child comes with many wonderful gifts. Gifts I wouldn’t change for the world. But they also come in a fragile package. This week on the AT Parenting Survival Podcast, I am talking about how to take our fragile flowers and firm up their stem. *** Interested in my AT Parenting Community Membership? PSP 111: Want Your Kids to Talk to You? Why Your Reaction Matters.
“He just won’t talk to me!” I often hear. Or “I try to ask her questions, but she just gives me one-word responses.” So how do you get your kids to talk to you? Often, we inadvertently shutdown communication with our kids without even knowing it. One of the perks of being a child therapist is I get an inside view of what is going on. Many times, kids will tell me they want to open up to their parents, but they don’t like the reactions they get. So, what are these reactions – and how can we stop giving them? In this week’s podcast I highlight some of the reactions we often give our kids and talk about why it shuts down communication. I also talk about what to do instead. So, if you have wanted your kids to talk to you, but you don’t know where to start – this episode is for you! *** Interested in my AT Parenting Community Membership? PSP 109: Understanding What Your Child’s Difficult Behaviors Might be Telling You with Dayna Abraham
In my home I have become somewhat of a detective. When my kids are angry, impulsive, hostile or defiant – there is also some pretty big anxiety or OCD hiding underneath. I have learned how to decode my child’s difficult behaviors in order to get to the heart of the matter. I have learned this the hard way. I have bumped heads. Gotten into power struggles. Stooped to their level. But I’ve realized time and time again – that approach not only makes me feel bad, it’s simply not effective. That is why I love what Dayna from Lemon Lime Adventures and Calm the Chaos teaches! In her framework she teaches how to go beyond the outward behaviors. She talks about how to figure out what your child is communicating. And how to connect, even during those ugliest moments. I am not sure when we, collectively as a society, decided that parents aren’t allowed to have ugly feelings. You know the feelings I’m talking about. The guilt. The annoyance. The middle of the night panic. The darker one’s too…. When you have fleeting feelings of not liking your child. When you have days where you want to get in your car and not come back. As parents we all have feelings we don’t like to talk about, let alone admit. In this week’s podcast episode, I am airing out those ugly thoughts. Bringing them to the surface. PSP 106: The Fear of Throwing Up | Do's & Don't in Parenting
Believe it or not, the most common anxiety issue I deal with in my therapy practice is the fear of throwing up. The formal name, Emetophobia, quietly paralyzes so many of our kids. The fear of throwing up gets kids sucked into a vicious cycle. I worry I’m going to be sick… And the worry makes me feel sick. So I worry some more. How do you help your child get off this hamster wheel of torture? Surprisingly it is the opposite of what most parents think. In this latest episode of The AT Parenting Survival Podcast I am sharing what to do and what not to do to help your child through Emetophobia. *** Interested in my AT Parenting Community Membership?
