Peace Talk Episode 221: How do I?.....The faulty assumption in this question that's very painful
A long list of people have submitted questions that begin with "how do I?" It's so normal and understandable. My mind does exactly the same thing. Of course it would love to know, what a fabulous question. But there's a baseline assumption in the question itself, that must be questioned, for a true relaxation to occur: the belief that I am an individual person who is missing something. I don't have the answer. I don't know how. I really have to find out how, it's imperative. What if you didn't have to know how, and the thing you're seeking is not actually missing? And this doesn't mean not studying, not enjoying learning, or never gathering information...strangely enough. This is about not being identified as "the person who doesn't know how." Or worse, the person who is broken, damaged, messed up, missing something. The person who is wrong. Who would you be without that troubling story? Even when it comes to addiction/compulsion? Peace Talk Episode 220: Q&A "I'm better but I've had this problem for years...how can I make it stop?"
Many people suffering from compulsive behaviors wish desperately they could stop. They HAVE stopped sometimes, for even fairly long periods, only to "go back" to what they once did--all over again. It seems like mental drudgery to be on the cycle over and over again, thinking about the same things over and over again. Like returning to the same area in the wilderness if you were lost--thinking you're finding your way out, and here you are at a familiar old point again where you were two days ago. So discouraging. What part of you is not affected by this merry-go-round? Peace Talk Episode 219: How believing "I have to be productive" makes us heavy
When we believe we have to be productive, we envision our projects, work, tasks, time as needing to be filled in order to be successful. The thing is, having this thought can produce a lot of anxiety, and then rebellion and sometimes the opposite of being "productive". We eat, watch, do all kinds of things, and keep moving. It's stressful. But what about doing nothing at all? Can we allow ourselves the pleasure of simply being, like we may have done when we were kids? Peace Talk Episode 218: this condition blocks my happiness--I am my body
The first Friday of the month (and sometimes the second--make sure you're on the Grace Notes mailing list to get alerted about First Friday) happens every month: an hour of meditation in The Work of Byron Katie and self-inquiry. In this session, we looked at the belief "this physical condition blocks me from happiness, relaxation, freedom". Hot flashes, thin hair, light sensitivity...and other ailments in the body. Who would we be without the story "this blocks me from peace" or even the thought "I am my body"? The Work of Byron Katie is a practice of self-inquiry allowing us to work with stresses appearing in the mind, and to relax with our experience of life. Grace Bell, facilitator of The Work, assists people to identify and question their stressful ways of looking at life. She offers Year of Inquiry, a vibrant membership community of inquirers Sept-June each year. Grace also has a special love for those suffering from eating issues including disordered eating (disordered thinking) of all kinds--having suffered from this behavior and thought/feeling process herself and finding an unshakable peace within around eating, food, health and behaviors with eating. Grace works with all kinds of compulsions, habits and addictions as they are all the same thing: a pull to some behavior, substance or activity in order to help us with our stressful feelings and thoughts. As Byron Katie offers us (founder of The Work); when we believe what we think, it creates unnecessary suffering. When we question what we think, we feel lighter and less serious about what is. We even begin to laugh. We notice who we really are is peaceful already, a human being living life as best we can--learning, growing, loving. In the public sessions on this youtube channel, we have all-group inquiry sessions called First Friday Inquiry, we have interviews with practitioners of The Work, we have Eating Peace videos (on the eating peace playlist) and we have individual sessions in The Work by courageous people willing to be recorded for Peace Talk podcast and this channel. Thanks to everyone involved in what is shared here on this channel, as it is great service to others in the world who find their way here and who are curious about life without "believing" thought all the time. In all-group sessions and solo sessions, we begin with a judgment...and move into the four questions and turnarounds. Willingness to be real and honest with your thinking is the first powerful step in The Work. No one ever has to share when attending Friday Inquiry, and thank you when you do. Peace Talk Episode 217: Questioning the belief you're damaged, broken, can't "get" it
When we see our behaviors, like over-eating, or over-thinking, or over-worrying, or over-scrolling, we often have many thoughts about ourselves and focus on what's wrong, and how to fix it. What if we could find a way to see ourselves without looking through the pair of glasses that says "I am damaged"? It can be tricky when you really feel off. But here may be a way to sit with this and feel the peace of what you are, without that thought. Peace Talk Episode 216: Will I ever stop this behavior, this thinking, this negativity?
When we ask "will I ever stop this obsessive compulsive behavior?" or "will this EVER stop?" (about almost anything difficult) we feel hopelessness and despair. We're looking closely at what doesn't work. We're seeing so much proof that this thing or condition or situation is incredibly persistent and relentless, and never-ending. Notice how you feel when you see it this way. Notice where the mind travels. Then, be sure to ask the question: Who are you without this story? What if you turned towards noticing that "stopping" happens constantly? That peace is available to you, for you, inside of you? What if you didn't believe what you're thinking? It seems hard to focus on what works instead of what does not. But it may be easier than our apparent one-track minds are making it out to be. Peace Talk Episode 215: Q&A The Work of Byron Katie when we feel we've eaten, said, spent too much
When we believe we've eaten too much, spent too much money, said too much and we feel upset about it, it often hurts or frightens us. How could "I" let this happen? This is wrong. This is going in the "wrong" direction. What if we paused and approached this moment with self-inquiry, especially using The Work of Byron Katie? No need to understand any philosophy, "get" any special theories, know anything new...simply working with What Is, or what appears to be true about reality, and noticing. Who would you be without your story about what's happened? And this doesn't mean deciding you don't care about what's happened at all, you sink into resignation, you give up, or you're fake positive about what's happened. Could thought itself be supportive? Let's do The Work of Byron Katie: four questions and turnarounds, and see what happens in this moment when we believe we've done, eaten, said, spent too much.

When someone dies, it is commonly a time of great transition and grief. What happens when we question our stories of death, needing someone to be present in their body, wanting things to be the way they used to be? Listen as a lovely woman, whose mother died only 2 months before this group inquiry call, shares her thoughts with us, and inquirers into her story. Peace Talk Episode 213: Is it possible to accept the body, even when I dislike how it looks and feels?
When we dislike whatever is happening in our bodies, we feel fear, worry, angst, suffering. We make plans to change it. What if we questioned our story, when it's painful? How strange to question the story of pain, disease, or physical appearance. But what does it look like to do this? Who are we without a story? Today's episode is a gathering of people together on zoom. One inquirer brings to the session her thoughts about eating when not hungry last night. When we have images in our minds of ways life could be better, even in the moment of reaching for food, just like this inquirer notices....we have all kinds of other thoughts about needing to understand what's underway, to stop that behavior, to fix this situation. Who would we be without our stories of improvement, even self-improvement, at all? Who are we, even when we have images of pleasure to move towards?

Peace Talk Episode 205: they rejected me, they hurt me
When we believe we've been hurt and rejected by someone in the past, it can stay with us as a reminder of lack of safety for years. In this episode an inquire recalls a moment where she felt rejected because of her body. The Work of Byron Katie: four questions and turnarounds, leads the way to freedom from this belief. This can be done with any quality we believe is reject-worthy within ourselves.

Peace Talk Episode 204: one-on-one session "I should not be sad"
When we're reacting to what happens in reality, it's a moment to learn from the experience, even if we'd rather not. The first place to begin is to welcome the feelings instead of resist them. Today we gather and question the thought: "this is not going to work!" that inquirers see about their children, parters, parents.
