042 Dave Leath, The Hero Academy
We civilians tend to think of our first responders - police officers, paramedics and fire brigade members - and other folks in high-intensity service sectors like hospitals and the military - almost exclusively in terms of their jobs. It may surprise you to learn that they can be just as keen on entrepreneurship and the side hustle as folks in the business sector. Dave Leath’s podcast, The Hero Academy, is all about these people and how they incorporate entrepreneurship into very busy, on-call working lives. Dved himself combines being a detective with over 17 years as an active street cop under his belt with writing books, speaking and coaching fellow first responders in entrepreneurship. Each episode of The Hero Academy features a chat with a fellow current or former first responder who has created their own venture. 030 Dungeons, Dragons, Adventure and a Talking Goat with Nate Peterson
A pirate may be nothing without a parrot on their shoulder, and few self-respecting ships would not set sail without a ship’s cat, but only a Dungeons and Dragons podcast would have a ship’s goat named Sebastian. Dice and Desire is an “actual play” show, where the hosts record their playing of a game, whether digital or tabletop, so their listeners can enjoy their reactions - and in the case of a Dungeons and Dragons actual play, listen to the adventures of the players’ team of wandering mercenaries. The show’s captain, Nate Peterson, is also the game’s Dungeon Master, and despite their being new to this almost forty-year-old hobby, he and his team have done a fantastic job of pulling a very tongue-in-cheek game together, complete with bardcore intro music, for our enjoyment. They’re playing the Storm King’s Thunder pre-published set of adventures and release new episodes every Wednesday, UK time, and poor Sebastian the Goat is just one of the digressions the Dice and Desire crew have taken from the text of the adventures. Nate and I had good fun geeking out about the Dungeons and Dragons hobby and podcasting in general; if you’re curious as to how sheer enthusiasm translates into awesome content, this one’s definitely for you! Show Notes 4:00: How the Dice and Desire team discovered Dungeons and Dragons 7:45: How a campaign became a podcast 11:00: Turning game sessions into show episodes 18:00: The Tale of Sebastian, The Most Pitiable Goat in the Forgotten Realms 23:15: Turning fortnightly sessions into weekly episodes 26:30: Nate’s prior podcasting experience 34:30: The Tale of Stuart, The Bard of Dice and Desire (yeah, but, for real too, he’s the one who does the bardcore intro music) 38:00: Getting other people to edit the show. 41:00: The non-game episodes, including DM and DM 44:00: What’s next for Dice and Desire and Nate Peterson? 029 Ye Best Believe in the Unexplainable with Kade Moir
Sometimes, me hearties, the treasure you found at that X on the map wasn’t quite the treasure you were really looking for. Our target for this episode, Kade Moir, once co-ran a podcast network called Comic Confidential featuring shows across the geek spectrum; something right up Kade’s alley, being a thorough geek himself. Nowadays, though, his focus is a single podcast, Believe. In each episode, Kade speaks with someone who has experienced events and phenomena that they can’t explain or even understand. Kade conducts his interviews with genuine curiosity, but more importantly, empathy, as the people with whom he speaks have often never discussed their experiences with others for fear of judgement and ridicule. Kade’s been bring stories of the paranormal to his audiences for over two and a half years; we had a great chat about giving people who are afraid to speak an opportunity to tell their stories, going from a flag admiral of a network to a captain of a single show, treating your home office for audio quality and setting up your own paranormal-themed coffee brand! Time Stamps 3:00: The genesis of Believe 4:30: Finding the first guests for the show 7:00: Did you know Australia has its own Bigfoot? 9:00: Whitefella familiarity with indigenous Australian myth 11:00: Developing the skill of empathy 15:30: Creating the Believe Plus subscription service and the advantage of DIY over Patreon 19:00: Cryptid Coffee and sponsoring oneself 21:50: Using Cast to run others’ ads in your podcast 25:00: Comic Confidential and the CC Radio Network: The start of Kade’s podcasting journey 32:00: The decline of CC Radio 35:30: The flourishing of paranormal podcasts 37:30: Rig Rundown: Kade’s Kit 43:30: Acoustic panelling: Kade’s recording space 45:30: Kade’s kit wish list 49:00 What’s next for Kade Moir More Kade! Harden your resolve and double your rum ration, me hearties. In this episode, the good ship Podcast Bay sails into uncharted waters - the waters of… vodcasting. Amandine Flachs has been creating video interviews with entrepreneurs since 2019, when she took her expertise in nurturing startup businesses and her love of digital entertainment and turned them into Entrepreneurs Playing Games, a combination of in-person interviews and playing of party games. Even the pandemic couldn’t stop this captain; although the playing of games has gone from party games with her guests to solo live streams, Amandine’s YouTube channel is still going strong, continuing to shed light on startup founders and their unique stories and show what it's really like to be building a business. Your humble first mate was glad to talk with Amandine about the unique features of vodcasting, our shared struggles at times of lining guests up and just how to handle multiple separate chatrooms while doing a live videocast! 027 Keep up with the Bishes or swim with the fishes!
If you want a lesson on why you should crash through your filters and embrace being you on your own show, I doubt you could do better than this interrogation Rylee and Rhi, co-captains of the mighty pod-vessel, Keepin Up with the Bishes. This pair of besties in business and life - bishes, as they call each other and their fans and customers - may have only started podcasting within the last couple of years, but Rylee and Rhi have found their pure brassy groove on their co-hosted show where they talk about the bits of the entrepreneur lifestyle that no one else wants to talk about. Even when they’re discussing those days when you’re curled up in the shower, bawling in despair, the sheer energy and enthusiasm of these two fellow Cairnsites helps their listeners find the courage to grab business, marketing and life by the short and curlies. I was expecting an awesome interrogation of these two and certainly got it, touching on topics from boyfriends walking into camera-shot in their undies during business chats to finding your forte in the fuckery! Your humble first mate only wishes he’d had some booze on hand to really enjoy the experience… 2:15: An exercise in futility: deleting the show’s pre-2022 back catalogue to turn a new professional leaf. 3:30: Birthing a business via Instagram stories and how not to pick a business name. 7:15: The Bishes’ favourite shows. 8:30: Designing the show: Podcasting as joint therapy. 10:50: Snorting wasabi. 13:00: Choosing guests and topics: Drawing from recent personal events and having backup plans. 16:30: Finding the right people to hand the bits you don’t want to do off to. 19:00: The realisation that everyone is winging it in business and life. 20:00: Rig Rundown: The Bishes’ studio setup. 25:00: Ship’s Pets: Does a boyfriend count as a pet and how do you keep his shenanigans under control?! 28:00: What’s next for Keepin Up with the Bishes and Bish School? 29: 40: Where can you find the Bishes? 021 Brace for Voices of Impact!
Ahoy mateys! All hands on deck! There’s an Ironman in our midst, although it be a woman! Today Rob is setting sail for the New World and boarding the ship of PodCaptain Erica Castner to interrogate her at the point of his cutlass! Erica has helped entrepreneurs, business owners and leaders to increase their influence and productivity for over twenty years, and has worked with such companies as Re/Max, Victoria’s Secret and Hertz Corporation to name a few. That’s a resume that would make even the most ambitious pirate green with envy! (Or maybe that’s just sea-sickness?) Her podcast, Voices of Impact, features guests from many different business backgrounds telling their stories about how they overcame the various challenges they have faced and how they got to where they are today to make an impact in the lives of the people they serve. A woman of great resolve and determination, Erica also participated in the long-distance triathlon race, Ironman! What better way to strengthen your sea legs than that mateys? I bet she could give even the great BlackBeard himself a run for his gold doubloons! So, be sure to tune in to today’s episode, whether you’re sailing the high seas or lubbing on land. It’s going to be an absolute treasure! Let's set sail! In This Episode: We learn that this is actually the second attempt at interrogating Erica. The last attempt was aborted due to technical issues. It’s discovered that Erica has been in the business development profession for over twenty years! Erica discloses that she is an Ironman! Ironman is a triathlon race that consists of a 2.4 Mile swim, 112 miles on a bicycle, then running a marathon. Not only that, but she had only learned to swim not long beforehand! Erica is a huge believer in female empowerment, and it shows! She has a storied career, like any good podcast pirate should. Aside from her show, she has worked with, or for, such companies as Victoria’s Secret, Lancome Cosmetics, Dress for Success, Re/Max and Hertz. She is also the founder of Kessler Consulting, which specializes in helping online entrepreneurs find, connect and convert prospects into clients. Truly impressive! Erica experienced an epiphany at a low point in her life and turned it all around by working with a coach and starting her own company, the rest is history! She is a big fan of Podcast Bay: The Podcast! And she’s not just saying that because Rob was holding his cutlass to her, we swear! 020 Building a More Inclusive World, Even For Pirates!
Avast, mateys! Don’t turn that dial, or push that skip button or whatever it is ye do nowadays! (Pirates are a bit behind the times.) We have an episode for you today that’s worth its weight in gold! Rob sets sail for the shores of Spain to board the ship of PodCaptain Kay Fabella, of Inclusion In Progress! Kay is a woman with a heart of gold, a great sense of humor and lofty goals, with the determination to get it done! Her podcast, Inclusion In Progress, is all about building a more inclusive and diverse world for people of all ages, genders, identities, ethnicities and religious affiliations! Kay has a very impressive resume, working with organizations such as the IMF, RedHat, Pepsi Co. and more. Her podcast packs all of that experience, and her DEI journey into one neat, little treasure chest to deliver to the masses! In this episode, Kay tells the tale of how she got into the DEI business and what it means to her, along with her lived experiences as a Filipino-American living in Spain and how it shaped her into the person she is today. She shares with us her many insights on what she sees happening in the world and how they impact us and affect our opinions, and gives advice on how we can be better and help to make the world a more tolerant and inviting place for everyone. There’s so much valuable and important information packed into this episode that I could be writing all day! But why would I do that when you can hear it all from PdCaptain Kay? Let’s dive in mateys! In This Episode: We learn that Kay has a multicultural background. Her parents are from the Philippines, she was born in the USA and is now living in Spain! Kay’s DEI journey really began when she was very young, where experiences as a young girl shaped her mindset towards diversity and inclusiveness. Kay has worked with large corporations, such as PepsiCo, the IMF and Redhat before getting to where she is today. Impressive! Kay had only planned to stay in Spain for a year, but ended up meeting her future husband there and has been there ever since! Kay’s team is multinational, with people from all over the world working with her to achieve their DEI goals! Kay enjoys listening to true crime and personal development podcasts. Her love of stories is what inspired her to start her own podcast. Kay walks us through her recording process and the team she works with to put it all together. (Podcast Bay Productions FTW!) We learn that Kay is using a new process to make episodes, where it will be in a seasonal format with new topics for each quarter of the year. We discover that, like so many fledgling podcasters who came before, Kay started out recording in her closet. (Hey, there’s no shame in that! It’s quiet in there! Good acoustics too!) Kay gives us the rundown on her recording gear, and discloses that at some point, she may move to a video format. Rob has a one-sided conversation with his dog! More Kay Fabella!
