Ignacio Urbina Polo @ Project Inclusion: Humanize the user Key Takeaways When designing, we need to go beyond the word "user" which is anonymous, an unknown, and easy to manipulate. We are not designing for "users", we are designing for "people". We live longer, and a big art of our lives is completely unattended by design. How do we design with the aging population in mind but apply it beyond that group? Many examples of good inclusive design comes from solving problems for chronic medical conditions. Ignacio Urbina is here with me at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, where he teaches full time. Ignacio is a Venezuelan industrial designer, and he has a master in product engineering. Besides being a full-time professor here at Pratt, he's been a product designer for over 20 years. He's a curator and writes about design issues. Utopia’s top-to-bottom, boardroom to factory floor approach has clinched household names including Coca-Cola European Partners, Google, Schneider Electric, Spotify and Universal Music. He also co-founded The Great British Diversity Experiment in 2015 and a year prior; the latter is an initiative that gives men a better understanding of gender inequality in the workplace and inspires them to become change-makers. He was named one of Management Today’s Top 30 Male Agents of Change, and in 2019 was on the Advisory Board for Inclusion Matters. Prior to Utopia, he held positions as head of innovation and managing partner at Cheil Worldwide, and was CEO at Profero, where he helped increase annual revenue from £.0.5m to £16m over the course of a decade. He continues to nurture a number of communities he co-founded, including Brand Social and Culture Social, which focus on accelerating culture change and creative thinking. He has also co-authored a number of books including and is a podcast host on Soho Radio.. Kate DeFeo @ Project Inclusion Kate DeFeo has taught theater to children and adults for over 20 years in Manhattan, Long Island and Queens, starting theater and creative writing programs at Cultural Arts Playhouse in Bethpage and Hunter College in Manhattan. She is one of the founding members of TAP Arts (Theater and Puppetry Arts) and is part of the creative staff at The Garden Players all located in Forest Hills, Queens. She has been performing long-form and musical improv for over 9 years on numerous teams and can currently be seen on the long-running house teams Sequel, The Magical World of Musical Improv and Freeze Frame at The People’s Improv Theater and Magnet Theater in NYC. She started FoHi Improv in order to spread the message of positivity and inclusion in Central Queens and has already taught multiple classes, led several corporate training sessions and professional developments and is simply amazed at her students.
