586: Aliens & Auctions
There are many who argue that the Alien film series lost its mojo way back on LV-476. The horror / thriller /sci-fi franchise created by Ridley Scott, and given a pulse rifle shot-in-the-arm by James Cameron, seemed like it would never regain its former glory or so we thought until last year’s Alien Romulus made us rethink that equation. Now, Noah Hawley (Legion, Fargo) brings the saga back home. This week, the Regular Joe’s take a first look at Alien Earth, a very different approach to the Alien(s) universe. Before that, Dave and Barry get the VIP treatment at another auction preview featuring iconic props from some of our favorite franchises. There’s also a round of What’s in the Box and the usual random topics. Thanks for listening!

585: Five Joes, Five Shows
As we hit the hottest stretch of the summer, the full slate of Joes have skipped the beach and instead migrated to cavernous, over air-conditioned, convention halls all across the country. In last week’s episode, you heard Barry Dave and Tod‘s sit down with Titus Welliver, this time they update you on the other things they did while at TerrificCon in Connecticut. Out on the final frontier, Brian Mix did double duty hitting Star Trek Las Vegas, before making his way back east to his second home in upstate New York, for Trekonderoga. To be certain Star Wars got equal time, Derryl checked in at the second annual Rebel Scum Con in Dallas Texas. This was after visiting the 10th FarleyCon in East Ridge, Tennessee, which covers all range of pop culture, and not simply, as one might suspect, the work of Chris Farley. There was also the Usual Random topics and a round of What’s in the Box. Thanks for listening!

You may know him as Detective Harry Bosch from Amazon‘s Bosch and Bosch Legacy series, or maybe from Star Trek Voyager, Deadwood, Lost, The Mandalorian, Titans, or any of dozens other roles Titus Welliver has had in TV, Films, Animation, and Audiobooks. This week Barry, Dave and Tod sit down with Titus at Terrificon in Connecticut to talk a little bit about his career as an actor, and a whole lot about his varied, and quite familiar, collecting interests. They cover 1960’s to 1980’s toys, Aurora Models, firearms, and pretty much any thing that else that comes to mind. It’s a great interview with a fascinating guest. Enjoy!

583: Fantastic Five: First Thoughts This week all five Regular Joe’s, Barry, Brian, Dave, Derryl and Tod, sit down to talk about the newest entry in Marvel’s ever expanding MCU, Fantastic Four: First Steps. Is the fourth attempt to adapt the Fantastic Four the movie we have been waiting for? Will this film be able to turn around Marvel’s lackluster box office record of late? Can five guys, with differing degrees of exposure to the Fantastic Four comics, see eye-to-eye on the latest bid to bring Marvel‘s first family from the page to the screen? And, lastly, can they talk about FF without comparing it to Superman? SPOILER, they can not. There’s also the usual Random Topics, a round of What’s in the Box, and a brief tribute to the late, great Ozzy Osbourne. Thanks for listening!

582: Strange New Episodes This week, the Regular Joes take a 1st look at 2 episodes from the 3rd season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. While very different in tone the two episodes are both deeply rooted and original series Trek lore. This prompts some next level nerding as the three take a deep dive down the Jeffries tube. The most recent Heritage Hollywood entertainment auction just wrapped up. Barry and Dave give their thoughts on some of the items they were able to see in person at the recent auction preview. The bottom line is, prices aren’t going down. Particularly if you’re interested in an old sled, someone once threw away, or 60’s era knickknack that doubles as housing for a genie. 581: Superman: Gunn’s Speeding Bullet
Superman, Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster’s comic book creation, has seen numerous incarnations over the last eight decades. The last son of Krypton has been heard on radio, and seen in animation, serials, films, and several TV series. While each is a product of its time, some are clearly hits while others are misses. At long last James Gunn, best known for Guardians of the Galaxy, has his turn at bat. And, in the view of critics, movie goers, and all three Regular Joes, he has hit it out of the ballpark. The Film both reclaims Superman‘s position as the cornerstone of the DC universe and heralds an exciting new era under Gunn’s stewardship. Note: there will be SPOILERS. So, if you have had any hesitation, just see the movie. There’s also the usual round of Random Topics and yet more What’s in the Box! Thanks for listening!

Few TV series have taken hits as hard as Ironheart on Disney+. Review bombed even before the first episode aired, raged about online by comment bros angered by the notion of (dead) MCU Tony Stark being replaced by a black girl, it hardly stood a chance. The question is, did it deserve one? On the plus side they got it over mercifully quick, six episodes released in just two weeks at least minimized the suffering. The Joes, who have all watched it to some degree give their perspectives on what they’ve done right, and what they’ve done wrong. This week, the full complement of Regular Joes, Barry, Brian, Dave, Derryl, and Tod take a moment to recognize two summer blockbusters that have reached milestone anniversaries. Steven Spielberg‘s Jaws (1975) which is looking pretty good at the half century mark. And Robert Zemeckis’ Back to the Future (1985) the film that earned Marty McFly, Doc Brown and the DeLorean (the cyber truck of its era) permanent positions, in pop culture. What made them stand out back in the day? What about the parade of sequels that followed each of these films? Which, perhaps not surprisingly, is less a cultural experience and more like watching a John Wick film with a much more attractive, protagonist. This week the regular Regular Joe’s, along with Brian “I know a guy“ Mix, travel to Louisville, Kentucky for Wonderfest, the long, running convention for modelers, both amateur and professional. The 35th annual show hosted an amazing range of entries from the basic to the extreme, including more renderings of the Creature from the Black Lagoon than you could count. There was also a broad selection of dealers, assuring that even the non-modelers had to fly home with something. They were joined there by many longtime friends, including. Steve Smith who talks about how he transitioned from attendee to vendor with his own custom offerings. Along the way they also sit down with Marta Kristen, Judy Robinson in the original Lost in Space 1965-1968. Does this newest entry in the venerable action thriller franchise break out of the time tested mold of, a world threatening McGuffin, death-defying stunts, and lots of Tom Cruise running? SPOILER. No, not so much. Does it do an exceptional job of staying in its lane, even while raising the stakes, and looking amazingly good doing it? Again SPOILER, yes, yes it does. 573: Hero of the Rebellion
In 2018 when Disney announced a Star Wars TV series based on the Cassian Andor character from Rogue One (2016) the news was met with a resounding … Really? In 24 episodes, three years of our time, covering five years of his time, we’ve come to know Cassian Andor better than any other character in the Star Wars cinematic universe. We’ve seen his triumphs, his failures, and the sometimes meandering path that led him to his demise in Rogue One. It’s the tale of how a thief became a spy, who became a hero and some of the best storytelling under the Star Wars banner. You can argue about it being slow at times, you can point out the areas where it gets obsessed with minutia, but when you step back and look at the big picture it’s an amazing and unique narrative. This week the Joes address the final episodes of Andor and cover some Random Topics. Thanks for listening!

aka - A long time to watch in a galaxy far, far away … Star Wars (1977) has a runtime of 121 minutes. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016), considered by right minded people to be the best of the Star Wars prequels, has a runtime of 136 minutes. Andor the prequel, or perhaps prelude, to Rogue One clocks in at 1212 minutes, or just over 20 hours. This week, with three of four, three episode Andor arcs released the Regular Joe’s devote even more time to examining how those minutes were spent. There’s no disagreement that Andor has its moments of greatness. What is in dispute is, whether the great justifies the wait. As you might expect, opinions vary. This week, the Regular Joe’s tackle the first trio of episodes from two shows returning for long awaited sophomore seasons. The Last of Us was the surprise hit of 2023. It is the rare video game property that found a life of its own, and proved that zombies weren’t actually done to death. The show returns with a gut punch of a second episode, delivering tandem assaults viewers are unlikely to forget. Meanwhile, in a galaxy, not all that far away, Andor, the 2022 prequel to Star Wars prequel Rogue One, is back, depicting the title character’s evolution from, dude out for himself, to rebel hero. While not everyone agrees on how Tony Gilroy chose to use screen time, the first of four three episode arcs reminds us how good Star Wars really can be.
