RAS #756 – Where Space Can Lead Us
This week on Ron’s Amazing Stories, we’re heading into space with two very different science fiction stories. We begin with “Universe,” based on the classic story by Robert A. Heinlein. Imagine a gigantic spaceship traveling between the stars, where generations of people have lived and died aboard the ship. There’s just one problem: they’ve forgotten they’re on a spaceship at all. Then on “As Read By”, Phil Chenevert reads “Project Hush” by William Tenn. It follows a top-secret Army mission to establish a military base on the Moon. But when the team arrives, they discover someone may have gotten there first. Also this week, Q/A with Ron returns. Ron answers five listener emails covering X Minus One, listener-submitted stories, the return of author interviews, my interview with a former NBA All-Star, and where I find and restore the old-time radio programs heard on the podcast. Featured Stories: “Universe” X Minus One Original Air Date: May 15, 1955 Based on the story by Robert A. RAS #755 - Just Three Things Ron Likes
This week on Ron’s Amazing Stories, there really isn’t a theme. Instead, Ron has three things he likes and wants to share with you. First up is The RAS Signal. This time we take a look at the remarkable career of character actor John Dehner. From radio to television and the movies, Dehner became one of those familiar voices and faces who seemed capable of playing just about anyone. Then we hear Dehner as English newspaper correspondent J. B. Kendall in the complete audition episode of Frontier Gentleman. The story is “The Remittance Man,” recorded on January 29, 1958. Kendall arrives in the western town of South Sunday, meets a sheriff claiming to be Frank Clanton, and before long Billy the Kid becomes part of the story. Finally, As Read By returns with “Untechnological Employment” by E. M. Clinton, originally published in the November 1962 issue of Analog Science Fact · Science Fiction. Told through a series of TWX communications, the story takes us into the problems of launching rockets when even modern technology can’t do much about the weather. It is read for us by Tysto, a regular contributor to LibriVox.org. Also, stick around after Ron says goodbye for a special montage of original old-time radio commercials. Featured on the show: The RAS Signal — John Dehner Frontier Gentleman — “The Remittance Man” — January 29, 1958 As Read By — “Untechnological Employment” by E. M. RAS #754 — From Radio to Television
On Ron’s Amazing Stories this week, we’re bringing back an old-fashioned RAS Double Feature. When television began finding its way into American homes, radio had to change. But what happened to all those actors whose faces had existed only in the imaginations of radio listeners? Many of them made the jump to television—and some became even bigger stars. Our two stories feature four familiar radio voices who did exactly that: Jack Webb, Raymond Burr, John Dehner, and William Conrad. In This Episode Geranium Plant — Jack Webb stars as wisecracking waterfront detective Pat Novak, with Raymond Burr as Inspector Hellman. What begins as a simple job delivering a geranium plant quickly turns into murder. The Adversary — John Dehner plays Captain “Honest” Weatherby in this adventure from Escape, with William Conrad narrating. There’s a sunken ship, a fortune in pearls, a questionable crew, and some very serious questions about how that ship ended up on the bottom. From Radio to Television — Along the way, we look at how Webb, Burr, Dehner, and Conrad carried their talents from the microphones of old-time radio to the television screen. RAS #753 — You Asked For It
On Ron’s Amazing Stories this week, you asked for it... and that's exactly what you're going to get. This episode is built around listener emails and questions. We bring back an old RAS favorite, Johnny Is It True, with four stories from the history of the podcast. Elena wants to know if creepy listener stories are coming back. Caleb asks if Ron is real, how he researches the show, and whether he actually has a radio background. And Gideon has a request. After hearing a clip during our recent episode about sound effects, he wanted to hear the entire Gunsmoke story about the white buffalo. So we're making that happen. In This Episode Johnny Is It True Returns — Four stories from the history of Ron’s Amazing Stories. Some involve listeners, some involve Ron doing questionable things behind a microphone... and at least one isn't quite what it seems. Are Listener Stories Coming Back? — Elena from Savannah, Georgia asks about the old creepy listener stories and whether These Are Your Stories might someday return. Q&A With Ron... Sort Of — Caleb from Boise, Idaho asks if Ron is an AI voice, how he researches the podcast, and what kind of radio background he actually has. Around The Bend — A familiar RAS song makes an appearance before we say goodbye. Featured Story Gunsmoke — “The Buffalo Killers” (June 7, 1952) Gideon from Burlington, Vermont heard part of this early Gunsmoke episode during our recent look at old-time radio sound effects and asked to hear the whole thing. William Conrad stars as Marshal Matt Dillon in a story involving two murdered buffalo hunters and one very unusual clue — a white buffalo pelt. It's an action-packed early episode of Gunsmoke, but listen closely to the sound effects. The horses, doors, footsteps, background sounds and, yes, plenty of gunfire help create a Dodge City you don't simply hear... you can almost see. RAS #752 — The Stories That History Tells Us

RAS #752 — The Stories That History Tells Us
On Ron’s Amazing Stories this week, we’re taking a trip through history — although perhaps not the kind you remember from school. We’ll begin with the return of an old RAS segment, Not So Important Times in History. This time, we look at an international crisis that happened practically in my own backyard that nearly started a war between the United States and Great Britain. Then Suspense puts its own fictional spin on history with A Friend to Alexander, a strange tale involving dreams, Aaron Burr, Alexander Hamilton, and a famous duel. Finally, we climb aboard the old-time-radio time machine with You Are There. CBS reporters take us back to July 11th, 1804, to cover the Burr-Hamilton duel as though it were happening live. And somewhere along the way, we may even find out what happened to a pig. In This Episode • Not So Important Times in History: The Pig War — The strange 1859 incident that brought American and British forces face-to-face over the shooting of a pig. • Suspense: A Friend to Alexander — A man’s dreams about Aaron Burr begin taking on some disturbingly familiar faces. Originally broadcast August 3rd, 1943. • You Are There: The Burr-Hamilton Duel — CBS turns one of America’s most famous historical events into a live radio news report. Originally broadcast January 11th, 1948. Our surviving recording is incomplete. Featured Stories A Friend to Alexander from Suspense — August 3, 1943 History provides the inspiration for this unusual Suspense story about a man whose dreams carry him into the world of Aaron Burr and Alexander Hamilton. But when the people in those dreams begin resembling people from his own life, history and reality start getting a little too close for comfort. The Burr-Hamilton Duel from You Are There — January 11, 1948 You Are There had a wonderful idea: take CBS radio reporters and send them into the past to cover history as breaking news. This time the microphones are waiting in Weehawken, New Jersey, as Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr prepare for their famous duel. RAS #751 — The Art of Sound and Air
On Ron’s Amazing Stories this week, we’re listening a little differently. Our main focus is sound effects and the remarkable people who created them. On The RAS Signal, we explore how sound-effects artists could build an entire world using little more than everyday objects, ingenuity, and a well-placed microphone. Then we head into the Inner Sanctum for a tale involving murder, revenge, thirty pieces of silver, and one very unusual clock. We’ll also bring back another old RAS favorite — Q&A with Ron — with listener questions about the changing podcast and how classic science-fiction radio created sounds for things that didn’t even exist. In This Episode The RAS Signal: Sound Effects — A look behind the microphone at the artists, equipment, and techniques that helped listeners see with their ears. Inside the Inner Sanctum — We talk about producer Himan Brown, Raymond Edward Johnson, that famous squeaking door, and how commercials became part of the program itself. The Judas Clock — A classic 1945 episode of *Inner Sanctum Mysteries*, presented with its original Lipton Tea commercials intact. Q&A with Ron Returns — Mary and Brandon ask about the direction of the podcast, while Leo takes us back into the world of classic radio sound effects — including spaceships, magnetic tape, electronic circuits... and even a cow. Featured Story The Judas Clock — Inner Sanctum Mysteries (April 17, 1945) Thirty years ago, a man was murdered using a strange clock said to require the thirty pieces of silver paid to Judas Iscariot for his betrayal of Jesus. Now the murdered man’s son has returned — and he has plans for The Judas Clock. This episode includes its original commercials. Inner Sanctum often blended its advertising directly into the program, and removing the Lipton Tea spots would take away part of the character and atmosphere of the original broadcast. RAS #750 — A Strange Chain of Events
On Ron’s Amazing Stories this week, things get a little strange. Okay... maybe more than a little. We’re bringing back an old RAS favorite, As Read By, with listener Franklin Paul taking us straight into the pages of a 1950s science-fiction pulp magazine. Then, on The RAS Signal, we turn our attention to one of the greatest voices of old-time radio — Agnes Moorehead. And since we're talking about Moorehead, why not hear her in action? We’ll finish with a classic episode of Suspense where a simple chain letter sets off a very unfortunate… chain of events. In This Episode As Read By Returns — An old RAS segment is back, featuring stories straight from the pulp magazines. The RAS Signal: Agnes Moorehead — We look at the life and remarkable radio career of the woman behind one of old-time radio's most unforgettable voices. Martian V.F.W. — Listener Franklin Paul reads a wonderfully strange science-fiction tale from 1959. The Chain — Agnes Moorehead and William Conrad star in a psychological thriller from the series Suspense. Featured Stories Martian V.F.W. From the May 1959 issue of Amazing Science Fiction Stories, written by G. L. Vandenburg and read by listener Franklin Paul. A parade celebrating the International Geophysical Year already has floats, bands, rockets, and displays of life on other planets. Then the parade manager is approached by a six-foot-tall ant claiming to represent the Martian V.F.W. Who are these strange visitors... and what do they really want? The Chain Suspense — Originally broadcast March 9, 1958. Agnes Moorehead stars as a vindictive woman whose decision to send a superstitious chain letter to an immigrant neighbor's wife begins a sequence of events that quickly spirals beyond her control. William Conrad also appears as Lieutenant Marsh. It’s superstition, fear, and unintended consequences in a story that proves sometimes it's better to just throw the darn letter away. RAS #749 - The Signal Around the Bend
This week on Ron’s Amazing Stories, we're trying something new. We debut a brand-new segment called “The RAS Signal”, where I get behind the microphone and spend a little more time talking about the history, people, and ideas that made old-time radio so remarkable. For our first Signal, we'll look at the writers and hear examples of how their words became pictures in the minds of millions of listeners. That leads us directly to Richard Diamond, Private Detective, created by Blake Edwards and starring Dick Powell. Our story is The Oklahoma Cowboy Murder Case. Diamond is hired to investigate the suspicious death of an expert horseman whose fatal fall may not have been an accident after all. And then there's the music…. What!?!? I wrote some lyrics for Ron’s Amazing Stories and wondered what they might sound like as a 1940s-style swing song. It's a Signal, a mystery, and even a song. Like I said, we're trying something new. In This Episode The premiere of The RAS Signal A look at the writers who helped create the golden age of radio Lucille Fletcher, John Meston, Blake Edwards, and the power of writing for sound The debut of Ron’s Amazing Stories — Around The Bend A few thoughts on AI, creativity, and turning an idea into music Featured Story The Oklahoma Cowboy Murder Case — September 27, 1950 Richard Diamond is hired by a wealthy Oklahoma man to investigate the death of his brother. The official ruling says he died after falling from his horse, but there's a problem: the victim was an exceptional rider. If it wasn't an accident, Diamond has a murder to solve—and horses aren't exactly his specialty. A New Signal The RAS Signal is something I've wanted to try for a while: a place where we can go beyond simply playing old-time radio and talk about the people, history, craft, and occasional oddities behind it. This first edition is only the beginning, and I'd really like to know what you think. Ron’s Amazing Stories Is Sponsored by: Audible - You can get a free audiobook and a 30 day free trial at . RAS #747 - The Many Faces of the Falcon
This week on Ron’s Amazing Stories, we meet Michael Waring, better known as The Falcon. But exactly who was The Falcon? That question turns out to be a little more complicated than you might expect. Our double feature demonstrates that journey with two stories broadcast nearly seven years apart. In This Episode Meet Michael Waring and discover the surprisingly complicated history of The Falcon. Learn how two different fictional detectives became associated with the Falcon name. Hear Michael Waring during his earlier years as a private detective. Travel overseas with a very different Falcon working for Army Intelligence. Explore how the changing world of the 1940s and 1950s helped reshape the series. Featured Stories Murder Is a Family Affair — November 27, 1945 Michael Waring is still working as a private detective when he and Nancy face a grim situation. A friend has been sentenced to death, and there appears to be nothing Michael can do to save him. Before the sentence is carried out, Michael promises to look after the man’s younger brother. Keeping that promise soon draws The Falcon into one of his most difficult cases, involving murder, family loyalty, and the consequences of choices already made. Rolling Stones — August 10, 1952 Nearly seven years later, Michael Waring has left his private detective days behind. Now working for Army Intelligence, The Falcon travels overseas on a mission to locate wanted war criminal Mario Tessely. When a friend is killed, the assignment becomes personal. Michael finds himself caught in an international mystery filled with deception, Cold War intrigue, and hints of Communist activity. If the name sounds familiar, that's because we recently encountered another Apache Kid while riding with Cisco. Are they the same villain? Probably not—but this one is every bit as dangerous. RAS #744 - No Laughing Matter!
What happens when two of radio's greatest comedians stop trying to make us laugh? This week on Ron's Amazing Stories, we shine a spotlight on a fascinating side of old-time radio history. Suspense was famous for bringing Hollywood's biggest stars to the microphone, and every so often it convinced legendary comedians to leave their familiar characters behind and step into stories filled with danger, fear, and moral choices. In this special double feature, Fibber McGee and Molly become innocent victims trapped with a desperate killer, while Jack Benny trades his famous penny-pinching jokes for a crime that could cost him everything. It's a side of these beloved performers that many listeners have never heard—and it's absolutely unforgettable. In This Episode Why Suspense loved casting famous comedians in dramatic roles. Jim and Marian Jordan step away from Fibber McGee and Molly for one of the series' most acclaimed performances. Jack Benny proves he could create tension just as easily as laughter. Listener email: Ron answers a question about how AI is—and isn't—used to create the podcast. Two outstanding episodes from one of radio's greatest dramatic series. Featured Stories Backseat Driver Originally Broadcast: February 22, 1951 - Jim and Marian Jordan, forever remembered as Fibber McGee and Molly, deliver an unforgettable dramatic performance as an ordinary couple whose evening drive becomes a terrifying ordeal after a desperate killer forces his way into their car. A Good and Faithful Servant Originally Broadcast: June 2, 1952 - Jack Benny takes on one of the most unusual roles of his career. After thirty years of loyal service to a department store, one man's temptation leads him down a dangerous path. It's a gripping tale made even more memorable by hearing America's favorite comedian in such a serious role. RAS #743 - Kids, Cowboys, and Killers! A Cisco Kid Double Feature
This week on Ron's Amazing Stories, we're heading into the Old West with one of radio's most enduring heroes—The Cisco Kid. From 1942 to 1956, Cisco and his faithful friend Poncho rode across the American Southwest helping the innocent, bringing outlaws to justice, and proving that courage and kindness could go hand in hand. What makes these adventures especially interesting today is that they were considered children's entertainment! Yet these stories are filled with murder, revenge, dangerous outlaws, and plenty of gunfire. It's a fascinating reminder of how much storytelling—and what we consider appropriate for young audiences—has changed over the years. This week we present two exciting adventures from the golden age of radio. In This Episode A look at the history of The Cisco Kid radio series. The surprising origins of Cisco in O. Henry's 1907 short story The Caballero's Way. How radio transformed a ruthless outlaw into a legendary Western hero. "Cisco Meets the Apache Kid" (January 8, 1953) "The Meanest Man in Arizona" (July 24, 1952) Why these action-packed Westerns were considered family entertainment in the 1950s. The lasting legacy of Cisco and his lovable sidekick, Poncho. Featured Stories Cisco Meets the Apache Kid (1/8/1953) - Cisco and Poncho are asked to track down one of the most feared killers in the Southwest. As they follow a bloody trail across Arizona, they discover that the truth may be even more dangerous than the legend of the Apache Kid. The Meanest Man in Arizona (7/24/1952) - The title only hints at what's to come. What begins as a confrontation with a notorious bully quickly unfolds into a gripping tale of revenge, cattle rustling, murder, and frontier justice. It may be the middle of July, but on this week's episode we're leaving the summer heat behind and heading into the frozen wilderness. Join me for a pair of classic old-time radio adventures where snow, ice, and survival are as much a part of the story as the characters themselves. Then we'll travel even farther into the Yukon with Sergeant Preston and his faithful lead dog, King, as they investigate a mysterious icebound ship. In This Episode Escape: “Judgment Day at Crippled Deer” (June 24, 1964) - A gold miner stands accused of murder deep in the frozen wilderness. With no judge and no jury, four fellow miners decide his fate. RAS #741 - Lights Out: The Dark Side of Victory
This week on Ron’s Amazing Stories we present a fascinating double feature from the classic old-time radio series Lights Out. Written by the legendary Arch Oboler, these two stories explore very different worlds but arrive at a similar destination. One tells of humanity's greatest achievement and its greatest failure. The other examines how jealousy and revenge can grow into something truly horrifying. Separated by years and settings, both stories ask the same timeless question: What happens when human ambition outruns human wisdom? Join us as we journey from the Moon to a mad scientist's laboratory in two unforgettable tales from one of radio's most imaginative series. In This Episode: A look at the groundbreaking old-time radio series *Lights Out* The creative genius of writer Arch Oboler Humanity's first trip to the Moon A chilling vision of a world destroyed by war A jealous husband seeks revenge A scientific experiment gone horribly wrong Reflections on the common themes connecting both stories Featured Stories: The Rocket Ship Originally Broadcast: July 28, 1945 A crew returns from mankind's first successful journey to the Moon. Their historic achievement should make them heroes. But when communication with Earth suddenly ceases, they discover that something terrible has happened while they were away. The Little People Originally Broadcast: July 14, 1937 A jealous husband becomes obsessed with revenge and turns to a scientist for help. What follows is one of the most unsettling and memorable stories ever produced on old-time radio. Ron’s Thoughts: Although today's stories are darker than our usual fare, they remind us that humanity's greatest struggles often come not from monsters or aliens, but from our own choices. Fortunately, history also reminds us that we are capable of incredible achievements when we choose wisdom over fear. After all, we really did go to the Moon—and when those astronauts came home, the Earth was still here waiting for them. RAS #731 - The Whistler: Nothing Could Possibly Go Wrong
The Whistler: Nothing Could Possibly Go Wrong Tonight on Ron’s Amazing Stories, we present a special double feature from one of radio’s most delightfully cynical series—The Whistler. Known for its sharp irony and unforgettable twists, this show reminds us that fate always has the final say… and it rarely plays fair. Our first tale, “Death Has a Thirst” (1942), takes us on a troubled sea voyage where a strained marriage, a so-called friend, and the question of inherited madness collide. Can you outrun what’s inside you… or does it simply wait for the right moment to surface? Then in “Lucky Night” (1945), a sudden accident turns into unexpected fortune for a pair of tightfisted boarding house owners. But as luck rolls in, so do complications—proving that sometimes the best things in life come with the highest price. Two stories. Two chances at something better. And two reminders that getting what you want… might not be the happy ending you had in mind. So sit back, relax, and remember—everything will be just fine. Probably. In This Episode A brief history of The Whistler and its unique storytelling style “Death Has a Thirst” – A troubled marriage, a shipwreck, and fate closing in Themes of heredity, escape, and inevitability “Lucky Night” – When bad luck becomes very good… or does it? The dangers of sudden fortune and hidden consequences How both stories explore desire vs. reality—with a twist of irony Ron’s Amazing Stories Is Sponsored by: Audible - You can get a free audiobook and a 30 day free trial at . RAS #730 - Donovan’s Brain: The Man Who Wouldn’t Stay Dead
Donovan’s Brain: The Man Who Wouldn’t Stay Dead This week on Ron’s Amazing Stories, we journey into one of the most chilling tales from the golden age of radio—Donovan’s Brain. Originally written by Curt Siodmak and brought to life on the legendary radio program Suspense, this story explores what happens when science pushes beyond its moral limits. Starring Orson Welles as Dr. Patrick Cory, this 1944 broadcast was originally presented over two nights. For this episode, Ron has carefully edited the two parts into a single, seamless story—removing original commercials and smoothing the narrative for a more immersive listening experience. At its core, Donovan’s Brain is more than just a horror story. It’s a haunting exploration of identity, control, and the consequences of tampering with forces we may not fully understand. And as technology continues to evolve in our modern world, its themes feel more relevant than ever. So dim the lights, settle in, and prepare yourself… because some minds refuse to stay silent—even after death. In This Episode The origins of Donovan’s Brain in pulp fiction and radio drama A look at Suspense and its unforgettable adaptation Orson Welles’ powerful performance as Dr. Patrick Cory A fully restored and edited version of the original two-part broadcast The moral dilemma behind keeping a human brain alive A mid-story discussion on science, ethics, and the nature of consciousness Post-story reflections on “what if” the brain had belonged to someone else Final thoughts connecting the story to modern technology and AI Ron’s Amazing Stories Is Sponsored by: Audible - You can get a free audiobook and a 30 day free trial at .
