Speaking of Athletes

We are FINALLY BACK after an extended break and will be back with more quality content. This episode is a check-in and reflection on what has been going on. 

Ishveen Anand is the CEO and Founder of OpenSponsorship, the first online platform created to facilitate sponsorship agreements by connecting brands with rights holders, like teams, leagues, and even athletes. She was listed as one of Inc.'s Top 100 Female Founders in 2019, and Forbes 30 Under 30 in 2015. She also captained both the college netball and cricket teams while attending Oxford University. 

This episode covers the Supreme Court decision rendered in NCAA v. Alston on June 21, 2021. This is the biggest decision in college sports in almost 40 years. We address some of the things that this decision does and does not do, as well as what this means for college sports moving forward.

This episode provides a recap of the Senate Commerce Committee hearing, which took place on June 17, 2021. This one was titled “NCAA Student Athletes and NIL Rights” and featured athletes discussing issues related to NIL, player health and safety, fairness, and equality. In anticipation of the Senate Committee Hearing featuring athletes, this episode features clips from a panel discussion held at the University of Arizona on December 2, 2019, titled "Name, Image, and Likeness in College Sports."

This episodes delves into the lack of representation of athlete interests within the NCAA, including a discussion of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and a clip from a prior episode discussing my time as chair of SAAC and what happened during the 2014 NCAA Convention.

On June 9, 2021, the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation held a hearing on NCAA Athlete NIL Rights. This hearing lasted over 3 hours, so I discuss some of the highlights and add my own commentary.

In this episode, we'll do a little preview of an important case in the world of college sports - NCAA v. Alston. The U.S. Supreme Court is set to hear oral arguments in this case on March 31, 2021. We'll cover the issue in this case, and the arguments being made by the NCAA and the players, as well as the Justice Department. We'll cover more after oral arguments.
