EP #266 Fair is NOT The Same
You CAN’T treat people the same. I have seen a thousand leadership trainings and even more pieces of advice. Most of it is way too generalized. There is no perfect style. You have to consider how to treat people fairly. And that is really tough. The best leaders learn from every interaction they have. You’re not born with a special skill. It can be trained but it’s mort about what you deliver to others than how effective you are at motivation or management. This episode will cover why you can treat people the same and how to be a better giver (leader) regardless of your title or position. EP #265 Should You Expect the Unexpected?
The unexpected sucks. But it doesn’t have too. In fact, I think you need it for greatness… …in life, in relationships, in business, and in workplace culture. I had a few unexpected things happen to me over the last few weeks and it got me thinking about resilience and the other related things to handling the unexpected. My business career, like yours, has been riddled with the unexpected. Adaptation has been critical. How does this apply to the culture of your workplace? EP #264 Recruitment vs. Retention
Why do we separate these two things? There’s a problem in today’s corporate environment. We think we have to recruit people away from other companies and then “retain” them. But what if we thought of these things more similarly? If people are thinking about leaving so easily, than you’ve already lost them. You haven’t delivered on what you said in the recruitment process. This lack of integrity causes a significant problem as companies and teams grow. You do so much to recruit and then you have to double down to retain. It should be a more cohesive process, and I have counterintuitive thought as to what will actually make it “more” cohesive. There’s this trait that every leader should have. You can name a million of them but what is it? I’ve heard plenty of leadership trainings. The best one’s will focus one specific trait for practice that can level up your work. But there’s only one that I believe should be applied generally. We live in a world of more. Yet, in this case, you can bet that if you treat people this way, you’ll find success in building relationships. Balance is impossible - and undesirable. I left town thinking I’d get "refreshed” but realized I actually just got deeper into the important stuff. This is how time off should be. If you’re only relieved when you’re away from the office, you’re missing something. This isn’t the first time I’ve talked about how I don’t shoot for work/life balance but it’s the deepest dive. People are quitting their jobs a lot these days. Should you try to avoid it or let people go? It depends…. There are some good reasons why someone might leave their job: relocation retirement family illness new opportunity I wouldn’t consider any of these “quitting”. They are reasons for change. No one would fault your company for them and so it doesn’t hurt recruitment/retnetion. What does hurt though is when someone feels bad enough that they quit - decide it’s not worth it. EP #253 Toxic Culture AIN’T Toxic People
Toxic cultures are habitual. There are a lot of internet complaints about toxic bosses. It’s good that toxic culture are called out but it’s not because of bad peope. Most of the “toxic” bosses are good people with toxic habits. These are the things that form over time as a result of repeated small issues. It’s easy to get caught up in a culture when people just expect things to be that way. It leads to plenty of miscommunication, unhealthy practices, and ultimately, burnout. It’s important regardless of your role in an organization that you identify toxic habits before they fully form. We’ll all have toxic moments in our lives where we make mistakes or the people around us do things we don’t like. But it’s the habits that count. Employee turnover sucks. But it doesn’t have to…in fact, it doesn’t even have to be a thing. I like to think of it as opportunities for all parties. When someone leaves: That person gets a chance to be in a different and better position. A new person gets a chance in the vacant role. The company gets a new perspective. I’m not saying there aren’t some bad things but I am saying that it can be good. Either way, you don’t want a lot of people leaving and new people coming in faster than they can be trainined. There’s nothing like family - good or bad. Families can have the best of time and the worst of times because they are groups of people who are highly invested in each other. We are a lot about our family. You also care a lot about your work - hopefully, not more than your family but still. It’s a big part of life. So, how is this to be handled? A lot of sources these days will say it’s toxic to refer to work people as “family”. I tend to agree. However, it’s good to treat people like family. Bad bosses will expect you to bend over backwards for the company because that is what family does. You shouldn’t have to sacrifice your wellbeing for the “family”. But what if leaders thought more about their work family like most people think of their real family? Yes, this episode is about “no”. This is one of the first words we all learn. It serves so many different purposes when all you can do is indicate what you want and don’t want. Things change as you mature, though. “No” begins to have more specific applications. It can indicate, interest, capability, desire, understanding, and many more things. It means a lot in work place culture. If you’re trying to build a generous workplace culture, you have to understand how the word “no” can do so many things for your role and those around you. Using it well can keep things respectful, relatable, real, and organized. Use it wrong and things can get negative pretty quick. I try to make “no” a consistent part of work these days. What kind of message does that send? “We only like you when you to something extraordinary.” I don’t think that’s the idea you want you’re people to get. You want them to feel more valuable. They should feel good about their work even if it’s a rough day. They should feel safe taking a day off if something is not right at home. Some companies have an “unlimited time off” policy. EP #237: How to Know Your Leader is Generous
Generosity is a mindset - not an event. A generous workplace culture is a hard thing to build. I won’t sugar coat. Great leaders have to work hard at fostering the right environment. What’s easy usually builds the wrong environment. And speaking of easy, I could give you a bunch of red flags of what is a toxic leader or workplace culture. Instead, I thought I’d present some green flags - positive things. You’ll love these things in a leader and if you are one yourself, try to implement them into your processes. Have a generous week. 😀 * ======= For in depth insight on how to attract the best talent and most loyal customers, subscribe to the .
