A New Zealander based in the USA- just outside of Memphis, Tennessee, shares his journey from the New Zealand SAS (NZSAS) in the 1980’s to establishing a specialized training school for high-end military and law enforcement personnel in the US. With over 4 decades of experience in teaching and training in the US he spoke about the niche focus of his company on professional Tactical and Breaching training for military, law enforcement, and other government agencies. We spoke about the transition from New Zealand to the vastly different scale of operations in the US. Alan reflected on the continuous learning environment in America and his adaptation to the new training landscape, emphasizing the importance of specialized skills and constant improvement. His experience with NZSAS, which included both domestic and international missions, provided him with a unique perspective on special operations and the importance of advanced training methods- that demanded precision, quick thinking, and a deep understanding of tactical operations. After a distinguished career in NZ, Alan decided to leave for several reasons. He sought new challenges and wanted to leverage his expertise to make a broader impact on the field of tactical training. Barrie Rice NZSAS Addressing the Demons- Through The Dark Times To Live A Better Life Today I spoke with Barrie Rice, former New Zealand SAS Operator, Reality TV star, Movie Advisor and Actor, Author and one of the Original Blackwater Private Military Contractors. I would like to thank Geoff “Tank” Todd of the for connecting us and making this amazing interview happen. The show started off how I thought it would, but Barrie surprised the hell out of me 13 minutes from the end about his personal journey and by god-it gave me goosebumps and has turned out to be one of the most powerful shows I have ever had the honour to be a part of. Truly mind blowing! We discussed Barrie's work and career from military to civilian security, his work with the America's Cup Teams, and his experiences in close protection and private military contracting. Barrie shared his preference for working with American military personnel, his progression to Blackwater, and his respect for Blackwater's founder, Erik Prince. In this episode I had the opportunity to interview Russ Price, a veteran in private security, executive protection, and VIP protection. Throughout our conversation, Russ shared his extensive experiences in the industry, including his time as a Hong Kong stuntman and his work alongside renowned action movie stars such as Jet Li and Jackie Chan. During our discussion, we delved into the contrasting aspects of the Eastern and Western film industries, highlighting the unique approaches and techniques employed in each. Russ emphasized the significance of due diligence in the security industry, stressing the importance of thorough research and preparation to ensure the safety of clients and individuals under protection. One crucial aspect that Russ emphasized was the need for heightened awareness of our personal surroundings. In this episode, I had the pleasure of interviewing my friend- Todd Bowler, a Guinness World Record holder for the fastest soft sand burpee broad jump mile. It was fascinating to hear Todd's journey and how he achieved such an incredible feat and even being able to be present with my son to watch him achieve it!! Todd began by sharing his background in the police force and his time in the Tactical Response Group (Australian SWAT and Hostage Rescue). His 15 years of experience as a Team Leader and Senior Instructor with the Hostage Rescue Team, and 23 years in Policing is one hell of a story. He explained how his upbringing and his love for action and excitement drove him to constantly seek out challenging goals. It was inspiring to hear how he pushed himself to the limit and never settled for mediocrity. During our conversation, Todd also discussed his next business venture, Zero Alpha Ultra, which focuses on helping individuals regain their peak physical and mental state. He emphasised the importance of taking care of oneself and finding balance in all aspects of life. It was clear that Todd's passion for personal growth and development was contagious. As a former tactical Leader and Operator, Todd shared stories that highlighted the significance of team resilience, communication, and debriefing. And in particular, what the aftermath of his first shooting was like. He stressed the importance of learning from each experience and constantly improving as a team. It was evident that Todd's experiences in high-pressure situations have shaped his perspective on leadership and teamwork. Towards the end of our conversation, we touched on the differences in communication styles between men and women for processing problems and providing outcomes. Jason is a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Black Belt and former Police Officer of 11 years. During his career he was assigned as a lead combative tactics instructor, firearms instructor and field training officer. He is the recipient of three life-saving awards and multiple department commendations and unit citations. He is also a former amateur boxer and certified USA boxing coach. He currently trains and teaches Jiu Jitsu full-time. We also address misconceptions about the effectiveness of strikes and emphasize the need for consistent training in fundamental techniques. Our conversation also touches on the behavior of individuals in high-stress situations, recent incidents of excessive force by police officers, the importance of training for children, and Jason's company, Jiu-Jitsu Five-O. World Record Holder, Adventurer "Legacy Expeditions and Folds of Honor: On a Mission to Support Veterans" In this episode, I had the pleasure of welcoming Mike Sarraille - a retired Navy Seal, Entrepreneur, CEO, BestSelling Author and Podcast Host.
But, most of all- Mike is a Proud Leader- not proud in himself - but immensely proud of his TEAMS- and this is a true part of his DNA. Mike’s impressive titles and accomplishments are truly remarkable, including breaking the longstanding skydiving world record by ending it-landing on trees- during the Triple 7 expedition in Australia. In just 6 days, 6 hours and 6 minutes, his team, and him broke the world record for skydiving 7 continents. It was fascinating to hear Mike's perspective on titles and how they hold significance when you're young, but as you grow older, what truly matters is your credibility, reputation, character, and integrity. One of the highlights of our conversation was delving into the intense training and preparation that went into their record-breaking skydiving mission. Mike emphasised the importance of utilising technology and the unique mindset of special operations personnel. It was incredible to hear about the level of precision and focus required to execute such a daring feat. We also touched on the challenges of transitioning from the military family and achievements to civilian life. Mike shared his personal experiences and the difficulties he faced when reintegrating into society. It was eye-opening to hear about the struggles many veterans encounter, such as finding a sense of purpose in and adapting to a different lifestyle. Mike's insights shed light on the importance of providing support and resources to help veterans navigate this transition successfully. Towards the end of our conversation, we discussed the charity mission of Legacy Expeditions, an organisation founded by Mike. Legacy Expeditions aims to provide veterans with opportunities for personal growth and adventure through outdoor expeditions. Are you aware of your surroundings? Do you know how to protect yourself in case of actual danger? In this episode my International guest NOUR ADRA discusses the importance of situational awareness and self-defence for keeping you and our loved ones safe. NOUR, founder of Charlie Mike Concepts, emphasises the need to shorten the gap between stimulus and response, to control one's ego, and to avoid conflict. We spoke about the difference between being in the ring with a referee and being involved in true anti social or a social violence. He also shared his personal journey towards becoming a professional who protects VIP’s and State Officials while avoiding conflict, after having quite the rough background in exactly the opposite. Listen in to this episode to learn how to change your mindset and perspective through discussion and actual drills, and how to spot pre-attack indicators to avoid violence. Today we hear the Story of 29 year Army Special Operations veteran Rick Hogg, who spent time with the 82nd, 7th Special Forces Group and “The Unit” Tier 1 US Army Special Operations Command. His time ranged from Desert Storm deep into the post-9/11 era.
Rick spent years as a K-9 handler in the Special Ops community, forging a very strong bond with his dog “Duco” in particular. Rick managed through years of deployments and overcame the effects of Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) with a very concerted focus on his own health and transition from the military that many can learn from.
After leaving the service, Rick is the founder of War HOGG Tactical- a training company that provides firearms, tactical, and canine training to law-abiding citizens, military, and law enforcement agencies.- with knowledge that was borne out of his experience training Special Forces. He’s written the book “The Firearms Training Notebook: 1% Better Everyday”, co-hosts the On The Range Podcast, and founded the “In Honor of Duco” charity. A combat veteran and a Special Operations Forces K-9 handler with 13 combat deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan, Rick discusses his passion for training others and his involvement in Project Officer Survival, a non-profit that offers free law enforcement firearms training. He also shares advice for veterans transitioning to civilian life and emphasizes the importance of taking control of one's healthcare. We discussed the importance of finding one's passion and purpose- and how he is celebrating life through photos and journals. During the show, Rick shared his personal experience with processing grief and losing his beloved dog. He spoke about how he used his training and discipline to work through his emotions and come out stronger on the other side. In addition, Rick shared a very funny story about his time serving in Baghdad, where he and his fellow soldiers had to deal with a notorious Christmas cake thief. Despite their best efforts to catch the culprit, the thief remained elusive, and the soldiers were left with a holiday tradition that was forever changed. Overall, this podcast episode offers valuable insights into the world of tactical training and the importance of finding purpose and meaning in life.
