The Stockdale Paradox (Season 2 Episode 3)

The Stockdale Paradox (Season 2 Episode 3)
Matt Hall shares a hugely important concept for dealing with hard times. It's called the Stockdale Paradox. It's an extreme example and is shared because it helped Admiral Jim Stockdale survive as a prisoner of war. Our bet is that the Stockdale Paradox will serve you well during this period of uncertainty and when facing future challenges. Hill Investment Group has used the principle idea from the Stockdale Paradox since the founding of the firm in 2005, and Matt has leaned on it both personally and professionally in many examples, including his own experience dealing with cancer, and even when writing Odds On. John Jennings: His IFOD, OCD, Plant-Based Eating, Investing and Coronavirus (Season 2 Episode 2)
John Jennings is someone you want to know. He is fascinating and not in a weird way, in a lovely, Dr. Seuss kind of way. He deserves to be famous, though he doesn’t care about fame, even though he is worthy of it and your attention. He writes something called the IFOD. The interesting fact of the day! His daily thoughts often tickle the brain into an active state. They are meaningful, relevant, poignant, and thoughtful. Does IFOD pay the bills? I think not. So what does Jennings do for work? Uh, he’s a big deal. John is President and Chief Strategist of The St. Louis Trust Company, a leading multi-family office. This means he helps the ultra-affluent. Unlike most in the wealth management, he deserves a lot of respect. And if that’s not enough, John is an adjunct faculty member at Washington University’s Olin School of Business where he teaches in the Wealth and Asset Management masters program. John is also a Forbes contributor, a lawyer by training, a hardcore vegan and a loving husband and dad. Enjoy this wide-ranging conversation covering: Lawyers who aren’t lawyers, John’s IFOD, Committing to a plant-based/Vegan diet and how it connects to solving John’s fight with OCD, Investment thinking and what the ultra-rich struggle with, Coronavirus and what napping has to do with success. David Stine: Creating Something that Lasts Forever (Season 2 Episode 1)
David Stine is a woodworker (understatement) and makes products that last forever, using material that was likely born before he was. Who do you know who can make the same claim? David also done the thing most people don’t have the guts to do. He quit. He quit the thing that most stick with their whole lives. He left office life and made the outdoors his new workplace. He’s thriving - so much so that media gurus are working to make a TV show about his life. David has clients around the world, awards from industry experts, and more than two decades in business, but the thing Matt loves most about him is he’s not just an artist, not just a craftsman, he’s deeply philosophical. Danny Meyer: Creating a Better World Through Enlightened Hospitality (EP.09)
Why would a man pursuing a career in law and politics suddenly give it all up and gamble his future on a restaurant? Just ask St. Louis native Danny Meyer, who turned that one restaurant into a hospitality empire and eventually founded Shake Shack, the beloved burger spot with over 250 locations around the world. Aside from the countless awards Danny Meyer has earned as a restaurateur, he also penned Setting the Table, which distills his philosophy on hospitality and leadership. But in his earlier years, he wouldn’t have predicted this future for himself. After the success of his first restaurant, he wanted to prove to himself that it wasn’t a fluke. That challenge brought him face to face with a harsh reality: he was a horrible manager. If he was going to make both restaurants work, he had to sharpen his leadership skills and instill the values of enlightened hospitality into his team so they could carry on in his absence. This self-improvement mission would be the spark for Danny’s restaurant empire: Gramercy Tavern, Blue Smoke and Jazz Standard, Shake Shack, The Modern, and many more. Today, with his philosophy of enlightened hospitality and belief in the importance of building community wealth, Danny Meyer continually prods the restaurant industry to level up and create better career opportunities for its workers, while challenging himself to share his insights with new industries through his investment fund.
