Tech Addicts 2025 - Keep your EV
Gareth and Ted from get nostalgic and novel to the cutting-edge and practical. There's a focus on unique hardware, including the launch of the world’s first ceramic mechanical PC keyboard, the introduction of a new BOOX Palma 2 Pro color E Ink e-reader with 5G capabilities, and a $6,000 solar-powered, wind-resistant inflatable camping tent. They also explore future tech with a hands-on look at the Samsung Galaxy XR glasses (and a tease of Android XR), a dive into the controversial use of AI by Channel 4 for a presenter, and the revival of classic computing with an Amiga 1200 pre-order announcement. Finally, Ted discusses software and workflow improvements, specifically praising the changes and benefits of using the Google Keep Chrome Extension for note-taking, alongside Gareth's love for Immich. Tech Addicts 2025 - The Ultimate Price Hike
New Episode: Join us for the latest episode of TechAddicts! We're chatting about Linux issues, the Retroid Pocket Classic plus updates on Honor's MagicPad 3 Pro and Amazon's new hardware. Oh, and beware: Xbox Game Pass fans are cancelling their subs due to a price hike! With Gareth Myles and Ted Salmon Feedback, Fallout and Contributions Ian Barton (Quick mention as now done elsewhere) Ian was particularly enthused about all things Linux and Open Source so was one of our more active members here in TA. He taught me much about all sorts of tech stuff - a kind chap - very kind - and thoughtful. RIP Dennis Schreiner on Linux Mint and BeeLink Sluggishness I just wanted to say that I have a Beelink with Ryzen 5800 U and Linux Mint is not running well for me on it either. I think Mint is the Problem since it switched to Ubuntu. I have since had a lot of performance issues with it. Also in the Top Linux List it’s going downhill. I wouldn’t now recommend Mint anymore for beginners and low-spec’d PCs. Since I switched my BeeLink to (KDE Plasma version) it’s very smooth-running again. Also Fedora is pretty easy to operate. Bazzite and Nobara are also beginner-friendly with low spec requirements. I’m enjoying TA, thank you :) Ujjwal Sehgal on I bought this thinking I'd use it purely for retro gaming but it's starting to become a favourite overall retro gadget. Beautiful OLED touchscreen. Runs Android 14. Google Play store present. Snapdragon G1 Gen 2. 128GB of storage. microSD slot. Icing on the cake is the head phone jack. I find myself using it to listen to music when I'm away from my phone. The squareish screen is great for watching old 4:3 TV content. It kind of feels like what GameBoy could have been if it were released today! I remember using my original PSP in the same way when I was younger. Feels like a nostalgic digital detox device - as the screen aspect ratio is awful for email, WhatsApp or any social media apps! Tech Addicts 2025 - A Plucky Pixel Perspective
This week, Gareth and Ted unpack the latest tech buzz. Is Valve's "Fremont" console the future of gaming? The ROG Ally impresses as a solid portable Xbox experience. Plus, Ted showcases an innovative AI-powered tablet with a projector that teaches kids a new language. With Gareth Myles and Ted Salmon RSS Link: | | | | | | | | Feedback, Fallout and Contributions Salmon’s (hopeful) iOS Leap! News Malcolm Bryant - 'Open source Android', aka AOSP, is really bare-bones. All OEMs to this point have supplemented AOSP with extra functionality in order to have a viable consumer-facing product. In particular of course there is Google Play Services, which gives access to the Play Store and many other core Android features. Google Play Services is not part of AOSP but it seems extremely unlikely that Amazon would omit it if the intent is to make this tablet a mainstream Android device. - - from £799 from £999 from £1,199 (later release?) from £1,749 from £349 Banters: Knocking out a Quick Bant and Google Headlines - Weather especially - Yellow Alert warnings… several days afterwards Bargain Basement: Best UK deals and tech on sale we have spotted £559 from £749 (and i3 £399 from £649) -25% £59.00 Was: £79.00 £242 from £369/£299 - £26.88 £33.24 from £59.99 - £308.99 (£119), 256GB/8GB (£139) Main Show URL: | Contact:: | Gareth - | | | | Ted - | | |

With Gareth Myles and Ted Salmon RSS Link: | | | | | | | | Feedback, Fallout and Contributions Bloody sun is coming out Sunday here which means I’m going to roast in this tin can (with windows doors shut for noise) or have fans and dogs and trains noise aplenty - so my vote is to get underway asap please! Camera Creations now has its own website (well, kind of)! I decided to stop paying through the nose for domains and SSL registrations so dumped it, Steve Litchfield style, on my homepage! As he rightly points out, that’s what he does with all his stuff and has never had a problem - the RSS feeds are the important bit for the podcast world. Anyway, so it’s at - bare-bones for now but I’m beginning to agree with Steve - keep it simple. Everyone’s on social media now anyway, not websites! I might move all my stuff the same way over time as domains expire etc. I also dumped my main site back to basics (from the Google Sites fluffy-look one it has been) - so that also needs work. Tech Addicts 2025 - Decant a Rant
Gareth and Ted reunite for another show. This week more on the Uk Online Safety act Gareth lost his shit about last week. Ted looks at the Nothing Phone 3 debacle, iKKO's new device, Google finish fiddling with Steam on Chromebooks, stolen load of Galaxy Z Fold 7s and PixelSnap be's a thing. Plus loads more. With Gareth Myles and Ted Salmon RSS Link: | | | | | | | | Feedback, Fallout and Contributions Phil Wells on Gareth’s Rant I've just listened to the latest episode and am concerned about Gareth's rant. First off...the legislation came into force recently but was enacted some time ago (26 October 2023) under the Conservative Government but time was given for tech companies to react and for the body charged with enforcing it (Ofcom) to get its act together. As such it should be Michelle Donelan who is the target for the ire as Peter Kyle can only deal with what has been legislated. I would contend that Gareth is guilty of shooting the messenger here. Turning to age verification and the bit about a Government ID system...off the top of my head I can think of at least 5 Government Departments where I am already uniquely identified....by NI Number, Driver's Licence Number, Passport Number, UTR (Unique Taxpayer Reference), National Health Number. None of the departments/systems seem to talk to each other (except that there is a link between Passport and Driving Licence systems for the sharing of pictures) and each stores the same information about me. Given that everyone is given a NI number around the time of their 16th birthday this would seem to be the logical place for any age verification call to be made. But then again when has logic applied to anything that gets done in this country. Ian Barton on A kind of super powerful version of rsync. A command-line programme to manage files on cloud storage. It is a feature-rich alternative to cloud vendors' web storage interfaces. Over 70 cloud storage products support rclone including S3 object stores, business and consumer file storage services - as well as standard transfer protocols. Rclone has powerful cloud equivalents to the unix commands rsync, cp, mv, mount, ls, ncdu, tree, rm, and cat. Rclone's familiar syntax includes shell pipeline support, and --dry-run protection. It is used at the command line, in scripts or via its API. Users call rclone "The Swiss army knife of cloud storage" and "Technology indistinguishable from magic". I use it to download all my documents and photos to a server at home, which makes sure there are at least two backups of every document (there are two computers that each have a backup). Because rclone has so many options it can be difficult at the start. However, some Googling will usually find a script that does what you want. AJ Santos on YouTube has become the UK's second most-watched media service, behind only the BBC, according to Ofcom's annual report. 20% of Generation Alpha - aged four to 15 - turn to YouTube first when switching on their SmartTV. People aged over 55 are watching nearly twice as much YouTube as they did two years ago. New-look PSC Show with me and Joe Hickey starts 1st September now Steve has retired. In the end I opted for which is based on but geared towards gamers as I have a big library. Every game just works as soon as downloaded. As Gareth said, there seems to be a decent software store with everything you need - and it all just works. Thanks guys for giving me a little nudge. Looking forward to your Linux special. With Gareth Myles and Ted Salmon RSS Link: | | | | | | | | Feedback, Fallout and Contributions Ian Barton on For several years I have been running an i3 box with Archlinux and TVHeadend to record TV. A couple of months ago the motherboard died. I wanted to record TV directly to one of my UNRAID servers up in the attic. Unfortunately, there are no TV aerial coax connections in the attic. I decided to buy this box. You can plug the HDHomeRun into your aerial in the lounge and use the other aerial connector to plug directly into the TV. The HD Homerun has an ethernet port so I can connect to another box somewhere on the network. Using Emby I can connect directly to the box to watch live TV. Emby on my UNRAID server supports HDHomeRun, so I can record TV programs using the schedule from the HDHomerun. I can watch Emby recordings from anywhere else on the planet that has WiFi and decent Internet access. HDHomeRun app on both Android and iOS that allows you to record programs and watch the recordings. Steve Litchfield on You're absolutely safe without a VPN. Every Internet-facing application accesses data over an already-secure connection. There's nothing bad guys could do even if they were to somehow intercept random batches of your over-the-air 1s and 0s. VPNs are OTT security. It will make activity significantly slower, because of extra encryption - pages will take longer to load, videos will buffer more. You just don't need a VPN. You really don't. Even in a dodgy cybercafe in Turkey. Your own encryption, built into your OS and applications, is quite enough. One caveat to all this - VPN's ability to fake where you are in the world to a service that you're accessing. Which is borderline illegal, or at least against terms of service of whichever service you're accessing. But so what?
