IT Troubleshooting beyond the 'IT Crowd method' đ
Master the Art of IT Trouble-shooting: Simple Solutions for Common Problems If you're feeling frustrated and helpless when your logical problem-solving isn't resolving the issue, then you are not alone! Despite trying various methods and techniques, you still end up with the same result and might even feel like giving up. The Simple Trick - Turn it off and on again Sometimes, the easiest solution to an IT problem is to simply restart the device. This basic step can often resolve minor issues quickly and efficiently. It's such a well-known IT industry fix that the comedy programme "" parodied it almost every episode! The process of rebooting forces the system to reset and discard any temporary data or background processes that might be causing the issue. It might seem counterintuitive to resort to such a simple solution, but bear in mind that complexity isn't always the answer to a problem. In this episode I'm () pointing out that the tried-and-true method of restarting a device is often all you need to resolve a wide range of IT complications. Considering that many IT professionals and users alike tend to overlook this step in favour of more advanced troubleshooting methods, it's a reminder that keeping things simple makes a difference. This common-sense approach saves time and effort, making problem solving more efficient. But, that said, assuming you've tried the reboot procedure... Identifying the Problem Once you've tried the easy solution, the next step in troubleshooting is to identify the exact issue you're dealing with. Consider any error messages that the device might display, as these can provide valuable clues. Understanding where the problem lies narrows down potential solutions and ensures a more effective troubleshooting process. It's so important to grasp the root of the problem before attempting any resolutions. Look carefully at error messages, as well as any actions the user performed when the issue occurred. Taking the time to accurately pinpoint the underlying issue is crucial and makes the troubleshooting process more streamlined and successful. Types of IT Problems IT problems generally fall into three categories: hardware issues, software issues, and network issues. By recognising the type of issue you're encountering, you can deliver a targeted approach for resolving it. Remember that attempting to fix a problem yourself might not be the best option, as this can exacerbate the issue or make it harder for IT professionals to diagnose and solve. I like to pop all IT problems into these three groups, and there are different strategies that will be required for each type of issue. Oh, by the way... be cautious about attempting to address the problem without professional assistance, as this could lead to more significant challenges. When in doubt, it's always best to seek help from IT experts. In this episode, you will be able to: Discover easy-to-follow strategies for resolving recurrent IT setbacks. Hone your skills in recognizing and organizing standard IT concerns that affect operations. Understand why comprehensive communication with IT support companies is crucial to achieving resolution. Delve into the risks of attempting to fix IT complications without specialized help. Construct an innovative technology plan to guide your enterprise towards a successful future. The key moments in this episode are: 00:00:00 - Introduction 00:00:32 - The Simple Trick - Turn it off and on again 00:01:15 - Identifying the Problem 00:04:28 - Types of IT Problems 00:07:15 - Reporting IT Issues

Upgrade to VoIP before PSTN switch-off so you don't get left behind!

Upgrade to VoIP before PSTN switch-off so you don't get left behind!
Do you want a phone system that won't break the bank and is dependable? Time to switch to VoIP. After all... you have to! Do you feel like you're constantly throwing money at an outdated phone system that still drops calls? Do you struggle with poor sound quality and inefficient call routing? It's time to take action before the PSTN switch-off leaves you without a working phone line. In this episode, we'll help you understand the criticality of transitioning to VoIP, how it provides superior sound quality and cost savings, and give you practical steps to prepare for the switch-off. Say goodbye to frustration and hello to reliable communication. Switch off of PSTN The Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) has been a cornerstone of the UK's communication infrastructure for over a century. However, with increasing demands for modern communication capabilities, the outdated system will be switched off in December 2025, as part of a nationwide initiative to transition towards a fully digital system. Consequently, businesses currently using landlines or phone systems connected to the PSTN are urged to upgrade to Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) solutions before the deadline. Furthermore, the switch-off will impact other devices that utilize analogue phone lines, such as EPOS machines and alarm systems, which will also need upgrading. During the episode, I, , will be emphasising the cruciality of preparing in advance for the upcoming switch-off by evaluating affected devices and planning necessary upgrades, such as internet phone systems and fibre connections. I'll also elaborate on the background of PSTN, its role in UK communications and the eventual need for modern systems like VoIP as a replacement. Benefits of VoIP Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technology offers a range of benefits over traditional landlines, which includes improved sound quality, better call routing, and significantly reduced costs. One notable advantage is its flexibility, allowing users to make calls from anywhere across the globe, only requiring a stable internet connection. This attribute helps support remote workers and employees who travel frequently. Additionally, VoIP bypasses long-distance charges and other fees associated with PSTN calls, leading to considerable cost savings and increased affordability. Lastly, the digital nature of VoIP equates to greater reliability, limiting instances of dropped and interrupted calls. I'll also be highlighting the advantages of switching to VoIP, such as its enhanced flexibility, cost efficiency, and reliability, especially in contrast with traditional landline phones. I'll explain how VoIP's capabilities improve business communications and sharing how your business can make the most of these benefits by upgrading to VoIP systems and fibre broadband connections. Excerpt from episode 94 of Techcess () "But it's not just phones that can be affected by the switch off, though. There's other devices that currently use analog phone lines, such as EPOS machines, which are card payment machines that you may have in your business, alarm systems which may be connected to an analog phone system in order to connect to like a monitoring center or an alerting system. These will also need to be upgraded, which could involve replacing the device themselves or installing new connections to the Internet. So it's worthwhile evaluating what you have within your business and your buildings to determine what is going to be affected by the switch off and when. We're talking about replacing devices, did you know that businesses typically keep the same phone system for over ten years?" Tech Topics covered in this episode of Techcess: Grasp the criticality of transitioning to a VoIP phone system before the PSTN switch-off. Recognize the benefits VoIP phones provide, including superior sound quality, efficient call routing, and reduced costs. Identify the devices that will be affected by the PSTN switch-off and the urgency to upgrade. Understand the multitude of advantages VoIP offers, such as adaptability, cost-effectiveness, and dependability. Plan and prepare for the PSTN switch-off by making the move to fiber broadband and engaging with your telecoms provider. Jackie believes that by creating safe spaces for individuals to share and learn from one another, cancer support centers can help ease this emotional burden. Excerpt from episode 93 of Techcess () "I knew what help was available, I knew what support was available, but it just flies out of your head completely. So if I take you through what support we give our clients, I'll do that. As my journey, I sat down with one of the experienced therapists at the center and she talked to me about what my diagnosis meant, what treatments I was going to have, and we worked out some therapies, complementary therapies that would help and support me on my journey through that. And I found very much that when you have chemotherapy, you have your chemo, you kind of go downhill and you feel really rubbish when you've had your chemo. And my chemo was every three weeks. 00:05:02 So I found that the first week I was rubbish, the second week I felt a little bit better. And that was when I used to go to the center and have a treatment and I would have reiki and I would have acupuncture. The reiki cleared the fog in my mind, relaxed me, chilled me out. The acupuncture helped my body to reset. So Chris, who was offering acupuncture at the time, sort of empowered my liver, my kidneys, my spleen, all the organs that get rid of the rubbish and the poison out of your system, and made me feel a lot better and helped my body, encouraged it to fight back, if you like." Topics covered in this episode of Techcess: Understanding the essential function of cancer support centers in the West Midlands region. Are your remote workers feeling isolated? Here's how you can use technology to fix that!
Overcoming isolation for remote workers with technology Remote work has become a staple for many businesses, but it also presents unique challenges for employees and employers alike. One of the most significant issues faced by remote workers is the feeling of isolation and disconnection from their colleagues, which can lead to decreased motivation, productivity, and job satisfaction. In this episode, we're exploring some strategies to keep remote workers engaged and feeling like part of the team. The challenges of remote work Remote work is here to stay, but it presents unique challenges not faced by office workers. Feeling disconnected from colleagues can lead to isolation, disengagement, and reduced job satisfaction. Remote workers often miss out on casual conversations and impromptu meetings that happen in an office setting. To bridge this gap, video conferencing platforms and instant messaging tools can help create a more connected and engaged environment. Insisting on having cameras turned on during meetings and encouraging instant messaging for smaller issues can make a big difference. This is just one of the many suggestions that I, Mark Riddell, host of make in this episode. Virtual team building and recognition Virtual team building activities, online games, and tools like the praise app can help bring remote workers together and foster a sense of belonging. These activities alone can really help remote employees feel more connected and valued, improving job satisfaction and reducing the likelihood of attrition. And we all know it's way cheaper and easier to keep current staff than hire new ones! Excerpt from episode 90 of Techcess () "Feeling disconnected can negatively impact motivation, productivity, and overall job satisfaction. If remote workers are not regularly included in team meetings, team building activities, and other company events, they may start to feel disconnected from their colleagues and their work." Tech Topics covered in this episode of Techcess: How remote work can lead to feelings of isolation and disconnection from colleagues The importance of effective communication to maintain a sense of belonging for remote workers Strategies for fostering a sense of community and recognition in a remote work setting The importance of setting clear expectations and boundaries for remote workers Also, here's a link to the episode we reference in the part about ensuring your remote workers have a decent wifi connection - And another relevant episode - If after listening you'd like some further FREE guidance on how you can ensure your remote workers are adequately equipped and supported to be able to do their jobs effectively, book a no-obligation free 30 minute chat with me now. The pros and cons of buying hardware from your IT support company

The pros and cons of buying hardware from your IT support company
How do you purchase your new IT hardware? In this episode of Techcess, I'll be talking you through the various pros and cons of purchasing your IT assets from your IT support company, versus sourcing the equipment yourself! In today's world, technology is the backbone of most businesses and without it, let's just say things wouldn't go very smoothly. If you listen to the episode I go in depth on all the various positives and negatives of buying from an IT support company like ours at . So what are the pros and cons of buying your hardware from your IT support company? The pros As you'll know if you're a regular listener to the , we are here to serve you, first and foremost. We're not here to sell anything more than free advice. That's why I'm able to give you a very honest rundown of the many benefits of buying from an IT support company like us, as well as being upfront about the disadvantages. Let's start with the pros, shall we? These are: Convenience Familiarity After sales support Integration And now on to the cons... In the grand scheme of things, you'd have to be really picky to actually consider these to be cons. But in the interests of balance and transparency (which you'll know I always like to be if you're connected with me or following me on !) I wanted to list some potential ones for you. They are: Limited options Cost Conflict of interest But.. overall, you should definitely remember you're not the IT expert.... Excerpt from episode 89 of Techcess () "Buying from your IT company is in most cases going to be more expensive than buying online. Now, I alluded to this earlier when I talked about the after sales support and how paying a little bit more can be a good thing. But often what is a pro can also be a con. Your IT company will add a markup to the price, which means you're going to pay a bit more for the same thing. Of course there's also the feel good factor knowing you're spending money with another local business, helping to put food on the table for local families instead of adding to the huge profits posted by large online retailers. But you can have the internal discussion with your own ethical compass in that one. And for a lot of people I know, this is actually quite important to them. But the one thing I'd say here though is that in most cases the customer just looks at the cost of the thing they are buying. What you need to consider is that it takes time to spec out a solution. Quotes just don't build themselves. So the extra that you pay isn't just because your IT company are more expensive for that product. They've invested time into doing this for you and that's included in the profit that they make in the hardware." Tech Topics covered in this episode of Techcess: The options for purchasing your office IT equipment Where you absolutely SHOULDN'T be considering buying it from! The pros of buying from your IT support company The cons of buying from your IT support company What you can do to make it go smoothly if you are about to purchase some IT equipment If after listening you'd like me to offer you some further FREE guidance on how you can ensure your IT purchases are well advised and fit for the unique purposes of your own business, book a no-obligation free 30 minute chat with me now. How to hire a hitman on the dark web | Techcess rounds up UK Cyber Week
We should start by admitting that this episode won't help you hire a hitman. Sorry. In this episode of , talks us through his experience attending the UK Cyber Week event, and his summary of the keynote talks. Among other things, we'll learn why you need to be careful if you're a high profile target that happens to attract the attention of a hot blonde on a dating app, and why you shouldn't share your birthday on social media... This is an episode you don't want to skip if you want to be kept informed of the latest risks cyber criminals pose to your business! The VIP experience Thanks to the Techcess podcast, host Mark Riddell was invited to attend the as a VIP. Being that Mark also wears another hat as one of the founding members of , he jumped at the chance and booked himself into some juicy talks... Confessions from an actual hacker If you've listened to Techcess before, you'll know how much Mark really doesn't like hackers. And I mean REALLY doesn't like hackers. So imagine how intrigued he was to know that the first presentation he would get to see would be from an actual anonymous hacker, there, live on stage. During the presentation, the hacker told a story of how his team managed to get access to a very high profile figure - who was trying to remain in hiding! - using nothing more than social media, a dating app, and some clever social engineering. Geoff White - Lazarus Heist podcast (BBC) talks phishing Another stand out moment from the event was the talk given by Geoff White from the Lazarus Heist podcast. Here's a if you haven't listened before yet. Mark was impressed with this talk because it featured a live demo of an actual phishing operation being carried out. And as Mark mentions, it's not easy to make live demos go smoothly during a live event! He also went to a talk from Tanmoy Hossain, from "Bob's Business" and his talk was called âBuilding Cybersecurity into Your Corporate Cultureâ. But of course the talk you're wanting to know more about - the talk that inspired this episode's title.... Jake Moore from ESET and his talk "How to hire a hit man on the Dark Web". And if you want to know more about that, you're just gonna have to click play to listen... Excerpt from episode 88 of Techcess () "So our anonymous hacker told us several stories of real world hacking missions that he had been involved with. Now, of course, we don't know who he worked for, we don't know which country he was from, we don't know who they were targeting. And I'm certainly not able to recall everything that he told us about. But I will tell you about one story that he told us. This was a mission where they had a target, and the target was a CISO. It's a chief information security officer of a large company. Don't know what industry they were in or why they were targeting this guy. And they believed that he was living out of a safe house, out in the countryside, but they didn't know where. And what the hacking group did was they created a fake LinkedIn profile and over the course of a few weeks, they used LinkedIn to build a relationship with the target." Tech Topics covered in this episode of Techcess: The VIP experience at UK Cyber Week What is the event and who should attend? The anonymous hacker and how his team tracked down a CISO How to hire a hitman on the dark web (kinda) If after listening you'd like Mark to offer you some further FREE guidance on how you can ensure your cyber security is where it needs to be so you can avoid being targeted by the sinister types on the dark web, book a no-obligation free 30 minute chat with him now. Power BI is essentially a business intelligence tool developed by Microsoft. Some might refer to this as a 'dashboard', which is common use of a spreadsheet. What are The significant advantages of using Power BI? One really powerful use of Power BI that Mark and our senior team really love is the ability to hone in on specific data points within your business. For example, you can click on a bar chart to see specific data, or use a map to zoom in on a specific region. This way, you can easily identify trends and patterns and get insights into your specific business. Excerpt from episode 86 of Techcess () "One of the things that we're actually doing here at m3 Networks is we are actually building some Power BI dashboards and incorporating those into a SharePoint site so that our team can see and share data across different departments within the business. Power BI can also automate the creation and distribution of reports. You can set up a report to refresh at a specific time, such as daily or weekly, and send it to specific stakeholders via email or shared through the web portal. This means you don't have to spend time manually updating reports and sending them to different team members, which can be a significant time saver." In this episode of , talks about the growing pains of a business and how to enable business growth without letting IT hold you back. He discusses the problem of growing the business while still retaining the company's values and customer experience. Keeping the connection As the business grows, there is a need to step back and bring in more people to the team, but this can lead to losing the connection with customers. Mark emphasises the importance of ensuring that customers still feel the same connection with the business. There's discussion about the importance of empathy in understanding the customer's point of view, especially when it comes to technological problems. Mark also explains his own personal background experiences and how it's helped him to see things from the customer's perspective. Watch the trailer for the episode Challenges faced by businesses with inefficient IT and when to consider outsourcing IT services Mark discusses how many businesses struggle with managing their IT as they grow, often due to either trying to handle it themselves or working with inadequate IT partners. This can result in a chaotic and disorganized system with files stored in different places. Excerpt from episode 82 of Techcess () "I think it's maybe because although I'm a techie, I do have a hospitality background, too. I work in hotels for a few years, I've worked in retail, as a student have worked in those kinds of environments where I became very, very switched on to customer service and seeing things from the customer's point of view. And I think that's really important. I think the word that you can use to wrap up this is like empathy, being able to understand what it's like, from the customer's point of view, because, especially with technology, when people are frustrated about a technological problem is very easy as a technician to go, well, it's not that big of a problem. Because you understand the problem, you don't see it as a big deal. But to the person that can't print something, or they can't find an email, or they forgotten the password to something to them, it's a huge problem.
