Henry Winkler, Your Disability Does Not Define You
03/27/2020
Henry Winkler, Your Disability Does Not Define You
Henry Winkler is a legend that doesn't need much of an introduction. It's likely you first knew him as "The Fonze" on Happy Days... or maybe you're a big fan of his current Emmy-Award Winning portrayal of Acting Teacher Gene Cousineau on HBO's Barry, or his equally hysterical performance as Barry Zuckerkorn, the Bluth family attorney, on Arrested Development. But you may not know that he's the co-author of 35 children's books and one of the producers on MacGyver, or that he had to get over his self-assessment, as a kid, that he was a "dumb" outsider because he was dyslexic. Despite his stardom and stature, he is full of humility, generosity and a love for the craft of storytelling. His story is full of resilience and tales of overcoming his own 10,000 "No"s. SHOW NOTES: Henry's love and appreciation of being able to "do the work", (8:22). Growing up in Manhattan with parents that he disliked for being "severe", (11:30). Henry's relationship to education, being dyslexic, and how it has led him and his writing partner to write a series of books all about an outsider, (14:49). Henry discussing the chameleon-like talent of our mutual friend, Sam Rockwell, (16:40). Being a late bloomer and realizing that making a strong choice as an actor opened his imagination and enabled him to fly, (18:02). From age 7, he wanted to be an actor with no plan B, which hurt him when Happy Days ended, (20:20). Getting into producing despite his fear of being "dumb" because of his dyslexia, (22:22). The doing of something, producing, is what made Henry aware of what he was good at, (26:04). The real work that must be done on one's self, (27:04). "If I change, will I be accepted?", (27:43). A disastrous night at Neil Simon's house, (29:04). A chance at redemption with Neil Simon years later and how he almost sabotaged it out of fear, (31:38). Going to college despite not walking with his high school class, mostly due to his parents' desire for him to go to college, (35:57). Forgetting his Shakespeare monologue at the big TCG auditions and making it up on the spot, (37:17). A valuable lesson about owning his unique gift from a Prima Ballerina, (42:42). The experience of Barry on HBO, where Bill Hader and Aleck Berg allowed Henry to bring his qualities to a role they imagined quite different from him, (44:09). A comparison of my relationship to my role on Huge in France and Henry's relationship to his role as the Fonze, "it's you they want", (48:10). A lesson about telling himself "no" while playing Scrooge in 1979, (49:16). On Inside the Actor's Studio Henry realizes the role of the Actor in the world - to hold a mirror to society, (51:24). Working with a young Sylvester Stallone on 'Lords of Flatbush' and realizing he was in the presence of greatness, (55:54). “If you know in your center that you’re on the right path, that this is the right thing… ya gotta keep going.", (1:00:09). A story about a pilot called Monty that started out hysterical and then was ruined by attempting to make it politically correct, (1:04:30) Working as a producer on MacGuyver, (1:09:38). Co-authoring 35 books despite feeling like he never could because of his dyslexia, (1:11:27). What Henry says to himself to get out a funk - you have to figure it out, (1:12:37). Henry's love of fly-fishing, (1:13:38). Henry's experience on Barry "everything you want it to be", (1:15:37). What Legacy Will You Leave Behind? Tribute to Late Screenwriter/Doc Filmmaker and Past Guest, Drago Sumonja
Amidst the current state of panic from the Corona Virus, I was told that past guest, Drago Sumonja had died of cancer. In the Fall of 2017 as his critically-acclaimed "Lucky", starring Harry Dean Stanton, was hitting the theaters. Actor Jere Shea, Don't Call it a Comeback
Jere Shea is a Tony Nominated actor who worked like a bandit right out of NYU's Acting Program. But when he realized touring on stage throughout the country was going to prevent him from raising his kids in the manner he desired, he walked away from it all to put his family first. After two decades, spent working in politics in Boston, Showtime came knocking on his door and, in a flash, he found himself acting across from Kevin Bacon on one of their hit shows. SHOW NOTES: Being out of the business for 2 decades, and returning to the stage with the musical, The Secret Garden, (5:55). “They said, ‘Are you going to stay over tonight daddy?’ They thought I was visiting. They didn’t know that I was living with them anymore. They assumed as preschoolers that I just no longer lived with them. I was gone too long.”, (6:57). Making the decision of wanting to help raise his children, (9:15). Gaining interest in ‘City on a Hill’, (11:30). Taking up offers of script readings whenever he was around, (13:46). Finding out about the death of his character on ‘City on a Hill’, (15:45). Returning back to acting after 14 years of working in fundraising, (19:05). “I’m really reintroducing myself in the business, and that is why it was so great to play Hank in ‘City on a Hill’.”, (21:16). Growing up in Hyde Park, Boston, (22:03). “It wasn’t always an easy place to grow up to, and at times, it felt like it was a good place to get out of.”, (22:29). Watching people running around and having fun on television at a young age, (24:39). “Ironically, I spent a lot of the time alone as a kid in a big family of kids.”, (25:46). Growing up during desegregation of schools, (27:50). Starting college on behavioral probation, (30:40). “Having taken 20 years out of acting, I never felt that I left the mindset behind.”, (33:25). Honing in on his acting career with attending NYU Tisch for his MBA, (36:55). Understudying with several well-known actors and actresses in Shakespeare in the Park during college, (41:02). Knowing his family was always his priority despite being nominated for a Tony Award, (45:00). “I was getting hired or offers to sign for a year in Canada. But you sign your life away and you just go. I knew enough not to sign a year to go out the country.”, (46:05). "The pressure to work to support them is intense for any person with a family. I wanted to stay busy, but I didn’t want to miss out on seeing them grow.”, (46:38). Feeling stability from his family and knowing there was a place he could return to, (48:57). “The notion an artist has to starve or suffer is bullsh*t to me. I tried that route and I did plenty of it. I starved. I had no money.”, (49:21). Finding common ground in the Protestant faith with his wife, (51:37). Maintaining a mindset of service from the Jesuit values of BC, (53:38). Defining ‘No’ as a ‘Not yet’, (57:20). “Finally realizing, ‘I have to let go some of my fears about this world and allow myself to be hurt.’ I don’t have to be such a hard guy anymore.”, (1:01:40). F the Critic in Your Head
We are all subject to the voice in our own head who is saying "no" to us all the time. Stay in the Moment
Looking back and taking stock is important for learning from your past. Visualizing a crystal clear goal in the future keeps you on track. But staying in the moment trumps everything when it comes to acting, parenting, sports, business or any other activities. The virtues of a nostalgic walk through New York City and the upcoming time table of a Summer 2020 book release are weighed against the power of staying in the moment in this solo riff. Help Me Find Love, Zander Fryer & Maddy Applin
Former 10,000 "No"s guest Zander Fryer met his fiance, Maddy Applin from across the world after being pushed to post a Facebook Live in his Business Group in 2017 entitled "Help Me Find Love". He was in San Diego and she was in Australia. They now live together in Encinitas, California. You'll hear the details of how Maddy moved halfway across the world for love, but all you need to know right now is that your approach to life, whether in business or in love, determines the results you will get. In keeping with our theme, if you're lonely this Valentine's Day perhaps you need to examine where you are limiting your own opportunities with internal "no"s that are preventing you from meeting the person of your dreams or creating the life and career that you desire. SHOW NOTES: Meeting together in 2017 from a Facebook Live event, (5:07). “This is something that a lot of people do. Once you’ve had your heart broken once, you never want to have your heart broken again.”, (9:55). “You can get really comfortable just crafting your craft, and that is the comfortable piece. I got really comfortable working on myself because that is the piece that I enjoyed and that made me feel good, but actually putting myself out there and going on dates is the really scary piece.”, (11:05). Maddy listening to a podcast and finding out about Zander and his work, (13:27). Making a commitment to yourself to get out of your comfort zone with bold requests, (15:09). Maddy persevering by reaching out again after a botched “second date”, (20:45). How Maddy works with her clients around belief systems and dealing with their subconscious limiting beliefs, (27:20). “They might have the outward success and everything they have dreamed of, but they still don’t feel successful.”, (28:16). How Zander’s approach unprograms our identities and beliefs that have created the problems we experience, (30:43). Sam Apuzzo, NCAA Women's Lacrosse Elite Attacker, Teewaraton Award recipient: Stay Humble & Play Outside Your Comfort Zone

Sam Apuzzo, NCAA Women's Lacrosse Elite Attacker, Teewaraton Award recipient: Stay Humble & Play Outside Your Comfort Zone
Sam Apuzzo is one of the most decorated athletes in Boston College history. During her career with the Eagles, Apuzzo helped lead the team to three consecutive national championship appearances and two back-to-back undefeated regular seasons during her junior and senior years. She holds the all-time program records for career points, goals and draw controls, and is tied with teammate Kenzie Kent for the fastest number of games to reach 100 career points (25). She ranks fourth all-time in assists. She holds the first, third and fourth single-season point records as well as the first, second and third single-season goal records. Over her career, she had four 10-point performances, headlined by a nine-goal contribution against Navy and multiple eight-goal outputs. Apuzzo reigns as BC's only Tewaaraton Award recipient (2018) - for those of you not familiar with this award it is the equivalent of the Heisman Trophy for NCAA Football or the Hobie Baker Award in college Hockey - it means she was voted the best of the best. She was also a nominee the year before she won and a top-five finalist the year after. She also claimed the Honda Award for Lacrosse in 2018 and was a finalist again in 2019. She was a three-time IWLCA First Team All-America selection a two-time IWLCA Attacker of the Year, a two-time Inside Lacrosse Preseason All-American, a three-time NCAA All-Tournament Team selection, a three-time All-ACC First Team selection, a three-time All-ACC Tournament Team selection and the ACC Attacker of the Year honoree in back-to-back years but what I loved about her most when we sat down was that, despite all of this, at her core she is just a hard-working, polite and humble young woman with a love for the game that I once played at the same college, albeit not nearly as well as she did. She made me proud to be a Boston College alum and, as you'll hear, in keeping with the 10,000 "No"s theme, while she has reached heights at a young age that many of us will never reach her accomplishments did not come without resilience and the ability to overcome setbacks and missteps. SHOW NOTES: Having to always be ready to play for the USA Lacrosse Team, (3:20 // 6:45). Describing her family upbringing with sports, (9:44). Attending a high school where a few other players have won the Tewaaraton Award, (14:13). Playing varsity lacrosse in 8th grade, (17:02). “She kind of really helped me through the whole thing. She told me, ‘They need you out there,’ which really gave me confidence when I didn’t really have much as a 13 year old playing on a high school field.”, (19:19). “I’m generally a quiet person. For me to yell at someone was a really difficult thing even in college too; I had a hard time with that. My coach always pushed me to say things or explain to the entire team to get me out of my comfort zone.”,(21:45). Coming really close to receiving a first place in several championships, (23:52). Receiving the opportunity to get the team to the Olympic Games 2028, (28:25). Looking up to a senior in high school who won the Tewaaraton Award, (30:12). “I think I’m still not where I should be. There’s always room for improvement. It’s weird to think I’m at the top of the elite lacrosse players now. I still think there are so many great players further above me.”, (32:16). Being an alternate for a World Cup in senior year of high school, (34:37). “I wasn’t necessarily the top 25 of my class.”, (36:20). Gaining more confidence in making connections with others,(39:13). “It’s part of the lacrosse world, and it is part of the BC world. You don’t really think about it as much when you’re in the moment with all that stuff.”, (44:08). Just Get Started Before Your Expectations Crush You
On the verge of a big job and the heels of finishing the writing phase of his upcoming book, Matt warns about the dangers of expectations and how they can squeeze the life out of you if you're not careful. Sometimes the most important thing is to get started. Many times once you are obedient to that higher calling, people and situations arise from out of the woodwork to help you figure out the logistics. SHOW NOTES: “It doesn’t matter what the external validations that happen to be going on in your life at that particular moment are. It is internal. It is your thought process. It is your choice to focus on the good and minimize the bad. It doesn’t mean to ignore the bad, but it means to not let it get a grip of you.”,(4:26). Recognizing the lack of gratitude in yourself, (5:05). “It started with this urge to express myself. This urge to use myself up in some way that did not require someone to hire me in order to do something.”, (9:40). Not knowing if your dreams will come true on any day, (14:00). Having people each step of the way who help with logistics, (16:25). Taking the leap to get things done, (18:08). Trauma Surgeon, Navy SEAL, Gymnastics Champion, Breakdancer, Dr. Christopher J. Burns, MD, FACS
Dr. Christopher J. Burns is a trauma surgeon in Boston and a member of Harvard Medical School’s faculty. Before that, he was a US Navy SEAL. But the reason he is on 10,000 “No”s is that before that he was one of my best friends at Boston College. Burns’ life reads like the script of Forest Gump and this conversation runs the gamut from two old friends reminiscing and busting chops to ample amounts of wisdom being dropped by a man who has been exposed to the extremities of the human experience both as a soldier and a surgeon. At the very least, it will leave you wanting to join us for linguini with white clam sauce in Boston’s North End. SHOW NOTES: Having a first impression of Chris as a leader while we met at BC, (5:15). Clarifying his role as an instructor of surgery at Harvard Medical School, (11:42). “There are certain phrases and teachings my dad has given me through the years, and he has always said, ‘You don’t actually know something until you can teach it.’”, (18:05). Describing his childhood activities and moments with family, (19:37). Recalling the start of his gymnastics team experience at age 6, (24:10). Knowing that he wanted to be a doctor since he was 5, (26:40). Discovering break dancing in his youth, (29:10). Completing over 20 operations on a Marines medic after taking a shot in Afghanistan, (36:36). Operating on pilots after being shot down by an RPG, (38:30). Being born with fluid in his ear making him hear almost as if he was underwater, (40:50). Relearning how to speak while seeing a speech pathologist, (41:30). “I had a problem and the surgeon fixed it. That was a very real tangible for me, and I thought I want to be a surgeon because I want to take a problem and fix it. I knew that at age 5.”,(44:06). Aspiring to become a fighter pilot prior to the release of Top Gun, (47:07). Describing how a SEAL officer leads from the front of the lines, (50:35). “I had my silly little reserve ID, and I said, ‘My name is Chris. I think I want to be a SEAL. Can I talk to someone?’”, (52:45). “These are not superheroes; These are just men who can do super things.”, (56:20). Relying on his religion to cope with encountering death in both the fields of a SEAL and surgeon, (1:03:46). “There are a few moments in my life where I have been privileged to be a fly on the wall. I happen to be in the room for a reason, but really I was a fly on the ball because I was basically irrelevant.”, (1:16:00). Recalling moments where he only listened to a conversation with SEAL Team 6, (1:16:20). “People talk about the new normal. By day 3, I’m getting my ego shoved down my throat and getting completely beat up. Walking through the front door isn’t as exciting anymore.”, (1:24:20). “Sacrifice hurts to the bone. To some degree, I may tell myself, ‘You have no idea how hard it is going to be because it is far harder than I thought it was going to be.’”, (1:41:58). GUEST LINKS: g SHOW LINKS: FOR ANNOUNCEMENTS AND PROMO VIDEOS OF WHO'S NEXT, FOLLOW: LinkedIn: @MatthewDelNegro RELATED PAST EPISODES OF 10,000 “No”s: Disclaimer: Because of the nature of our relationship and the tenor of this interview, I cut Dr. Burns off many times. Some of those times, he felt he was never able to get back to his original intent in bringing up the story. Wherever that happens, I take full responsibility. At one point, near where Burns referenced a story containing the phrase "Pedro 66" he mentioned another helo accident where "everybody involved was killed"... he cannot confirm that everybody was killed but certainly many people died. He failed to mention that, in addition to Brigham and Women's Hospital, he works at South Shore Hospital because I never gave him the opportunity to finish. As a sign of respect to his colleagues there, he felt it imperative to correct that. I decided to keep the conversation very raw because I felt that it added entertainment value, but he did not want anyone walking away offended or upset that certain facts were not set straight. There were a few more discrepancies that concerned him, but in the interest of time, I ask you to just write into the show at if you have complaints or want to get specifics worked out. Thank you.
