Season 4: Episode 33 - Dankhouse Brewing Company
This week I was in Newark, Ohio and I sat down with Heather and Josh Lange who own Dankhouse Brewing. Dankhouse has always been a favorite of mine as they specialize in Hazy IPAs and Sours. While sours aren’t my jam anymore I do quite like theirs. During the show we talked about how Dankhouse was born from a homebrewing dream in a garage, and how Josh developed the business plan in his work van. The original plan was to own start craft beer bottle shop, but once a large chain grocery store put the kibosh to those plans the brewery quickly took flight. In the end we should all be glad that the bottle shop idea failed, and the brewery idea prevailed. Beer Selection: · Super Fantastic – American IPA 7% · Hop Files 2 – 8.5% · Garbage Ale Suds – Smoothie Sour 5.6% · Tweek-N-Gnomes – Imperial Stout 8% You can find Dankhouse Brewing Company on the web at and you can also see them on FB and IG @dankhousebrews. Style Files: American Brown Ale
In this episode Bob and I take on an interesting category. We discsuss the American Brown Ale, which in theory looks like a version of the English brown, but jacked up on hops (allegedly). American brown ale with roasted malt, caramel-like and chocolate-like characters should be of medium intensity in both flavor and aroma for the American brown ale. American-style brown ales have evident low to medium hop flavor and aroma and medium to high hop bitterness. The history of this style dates back to U.S. homebrewers who were inspired by English-style brown ales and porters. It sits in flavor between those British styles and is more bitter than both. Examples of this style: 1. HiHo – Touchdown Brown 2. Treehouse – Bear 3. Wrecking Crew Brew Works – Shotgun Banister ABV: 4.3-6.2% IBUs: 18-35 Color: 18-35 Serving Temp: 45-50F Serving Pressure: 5-8 PSI Beer Representation: Jackie O’s - Chomolungma 6.5% ABV 33 IBUs Beer Description: This brown ale was brewed to commemorate the 2007 Lungevity Everest Expedition. The people of Tibet call Mt. Everest “Chomolungma,” and this exceptional ale carries on the spirit of the climb. Seven Malts, three hops, and 100 pounds of local wild flower honey give this ale an exceptional character. Baked muffins, dark fruit, bittersweet chocolate, rich honey and earthy subtle hops caress the palate. Support the show by doing your Amazon shopping through our affiliate link. Style Files: Episode 31 - English IPA
In this episode Bob and I continue our trek down the IPA road as we explore the English IPA. English IPA - Strong, bitter and completely misunderstood, the English India pale ale (or English IPA) bridges the gap between past and present. No other style represents modern craft brewing excitement quite like the IPA, and while this English beer differs widely from the American version it inspires, this strong member of the English pale ale family has plenty of its own to offer — including all of the history behind this variety. Beer Representation: Great Lakes Brewing Company – Commodore Perry 7.7% ABV 70 IBUs Beer Description: What’s this? A British-style IPA named after the man who defeated His Majesty’s Royal Navy in the War of 1812? Consider this a bold, hoppy (and mildly ironic) plunder of war. Dry and well-hopped, with an arsenal of caramel malt flavors befitting the “Hero of Lake Erie.” ABV: 5-7.5% IBUs: 40-60 Color: 6-14 Serving Temp: 45-55F Serving Pressure: 7-13 PSI Support the show by doing your Amazon shopping through our affiliate link. Style Files: Episode 30 - American Pale Ale
In this episode Bob and I continue to drink hoppy beers. This week we throttle the IBUs back a bit and take on the American Pale. Like many others that have become known as classic American beers, the American pale ale can trace its roots to beer styles from abroad. The American pale ale beer was inspired by the English pale ale, replacing its English counterpart’s earthy, herbal hops with generous additions of boldly citrus and pine-like American varieties. As one of the most popular American beer styles, pale ale beer is not hard to track down, but the various takes on this iconic style by just as many American craft brewers makes it impossible to jam everything there is to know about American pale ale beer on one page, but we’ll do our best. ABV: 4.5-6.2% IBUs: 30-50 Color: 5-10 Serving Temp: 45-50F Serving Pressure: 7-13 PSI Beer Representation: Sierra Nevada – Pale Ale 5.6% ABV 38 IBUs Beer Description: Our most popular beer, Sierra Nevada Pale Ale is a delightful interpretation of a classic style. It has a deep amber color and an exceptionally full-bodied, complex character. Generous quantities of premium Cascade hops give the Pale Ale its fragrant bouquet and spicy flavor. Second representation: The Dancing Gnome – Lustra 5.8% ABV 45 IBU Beer Description: An ode to the unity of malted barley, hops, yeast, water, and the brewer who prudently blends them. Intense tropical and citrus fruit aromas and a clean fruity bitterness work in harmony with the lightly toasted wheat bread flavors derived from the malt. Style Files: Episode 29 - Double IPA
In this episode Bob and I continue our trek down the IPA road and we explore the Double IPA. American craft beer lovers are huge fans of the IPA. The quest for more of the India pale ale flavor has led them to the imperial India pale ale, a stronger version of the American IPA, which boasts even more hoppy flavor, aroma and bitterness. Imperial India pale ale is darker in color than the American IPA, substantially more bitter, and high in alcohol by volume. This all-American take on the IPA leaves craft beer fans with plenty of new creations to try. Examples of this style: 1. Russian River – Pliny the Elder 2. Fatheads – Hop Ju Ju 3. Great Lakes Brewing Company – Chill Wave ABV: 7.5-10% IBUs: 60-100 Color: 6-14 Serving Temp: 45-55F Serving Pressure: 7-13 PSI Beer Representation: Columbus Brewing - Bodhi 8.3% ABV 80 IBUs Beer Description: Award-winning double IPA featuring Citra® hops with a pale golden color. This week I was down in Delaware, Ohio hanging with Frank Barickman who is the owner and head brewer at Restoration Brew Works. Frank and I discussed the brewery’s opening in 2015, and how they survived through 2020. We also talked a lot about how breweries need to evolve in 2023 to remain successful. During the interview we drank some very tasty beers including a Pilsner featuring a new aged lager yeast that helps it finish out fast like an Ale while still maintaining a traditional lager taste. We also drank an award-winning Irish Red that they often use as a gateway beer for non-craft beer drinkers to convert them. At the end we drank a delicious Russian Imperial Stout from 2021. Style Files: Episode 28 - Hazy IPA
In this episode Bob and I stay on the IPA train, and turn our attention to the Hazy IPA. Emphasizing hop aroma and flavor without bracing bitterness, the New England IPA leans heavily on late and dry hopping techniques to deliver a bursting juicy, tropical hop experience. The skillful balance of technique and ingredient selection, often including the addition of wheat or oats, lends an alluring haze to this popular take on the American IPA. Examples of this style: 1. Treehouse – Julius 2. Masthead Brewing Company – Hazy Headlines 3. The Alchemist – Heady Topper 4. Style Files: Episode 27 - American IPA
In this episode Bob and I finally reach the IPA category. We begin this category with the American IPA. Characterized by floral, fruity, citrus-like, piney or resinous American-variety hop character, the IPA beer style is all about hop flavor, aroma and bitterness. Bell’s – Two Hearted 2. Dogfish Head – 60 Minute IPA 3. Sierra Nevada – Torpedo Extra IPA ABV: 5.5-7.5% IBUs: 40-70 Color: 6-14 Serving Temp: 45-55F Serving Pressure: 7-13 PSI Beer Representation: Fat Heads Head Hunter 7.5% ABV 87 IBUs Beer Description: 2023 World Beer Cup Gold Award American IPA.
