The 48 Hour Film Project- Pittsburgh - 2023 Wrap Party Special
This week, we've got a special treat for you all. The past month, we've been working with The 48 Hour Film Project - Pittsburgh, the city chapter of the world wide contest of filmmakers who all compete on a given weekend to produce a short film from the ground up within 48 hours based on a provided character, prop, and line of dialogue. This year, we assisted in hosting a live stream for their wrap party where we interviewed tons of local filmmakers to see just how their weekend in the filmmaking crucible ended up. Special thanks to City Producer PJ Gaynard, JP Lavoie, Bryan Chemini, the staff at Riley's Pour House in Carnegie, and of course the filmmakers we spoke to who shared their stories with us. Jack And Jill (2011) With The Silver Linings Playlist Podcast - Episode 270
This week's movie is one that we have actively avoided since 2016. This week, we are tackling, with the help of Dustin and Nathan of The Silver Lining's Playlist Podcast, 2011's Jack & Jill. A movie so bad that it hurts our brains. Why does this movie suck so bad you might ask? Could it be the fact that Adam Sandler plays a female version of himself who's running gag is farting and pooping in every scene? Could it be the MASSIVE amounts of product placement that make this film feel like the bumper of a Nascar race car? Or could it be the sheer level of racist stereotypes and jokes that weren't ok in 2011 let alone in 2023? Well swig some Pepto Bismal folks, cause this one is gonna be a bumpy ride. Edgar Wright - Filmmaker Retrospective with Sophia Ricciardi of MOVIESTRUCK! - Episode 269
This week, after a bit of a break for our live show for the 48 hour film project in Pittsburgh, we are back to look at a filmmaker that has managed to constantly merge genres with a massive talent in using all the tools of the trade to visually tell a story. We're talking about Edgar Wright. The filmmaker behind Shaun of The Dead, Hot Fuzz, and Baby Driver. A technical wizard and a master of filmmaking choreography. However, a massive talent like Edgar Wright requires a massive talent to assist in the review, so we are joined by fellow film podcaster, Sophia Ricciardi of MOVIESTRUCK! We pull back the curtain to take a hard look at this filmmaker and attempt to answer the question....can John come up with a million dollar catch phrase like "snoochie boochies" to include in Brian's next film. The Ladykillers (2004) - Movie Review - Episode 268
This week after our descent into the Breenpocalypse (seriously check episode 267 for our therapy session) we needed a serious pallete cleanser. For us that came in the form of the 2004 film, The Ladykillers. Deridded by critics and fans of the often celebrated Cohen Brothers, this remake of the 1955 british comedy about criminals robbing a casino by tunnelling through an elderly woman's basement is chock full of so many off the wall and darkly comedic moments. From the need for waffles, Tom Hank's doing his best Foghorn Leghorn impression, to a yet to be super famous J.K Simmons stealing scenes as the demolition expert with IBS, Garth Pancake. But does this movie deserve the hate or is this an under appreciated gem that has grown better with age? We'll find out today! DISCORD!!! Take the conversation further! Twisted Pair (2018) - The Fifth Horseman of The Breenpocalypse - Episode 267
"Please God make it stop.." Those words were inside our heads the entire time that we watched this week's movie, Twisted Pair. A movie by our favorite cultivator of cinematic crap, Neil Breen. And boy oh boy, this one was bad. Never did we think that we would long for the days of tuna, laptops, and magic rocks...but leave it to everyone's favorite god, alien, humanoid, cyborg-jesus; we started to miss the old day's of Breen. Instead what we were left with was a bizarre green screen hellscape that then splits it's time with an abandonded community college in Nevada. Special thanks to Wikipedia, as there would have been NO WAY that we would be able to parse a plot out of this film without the plot summary. DISCORD!!! Take the conversation further! This week, we are taking a bizarre pipe down to the neon colored, member-berry filled world of The Super Mario Bros Movie! No, not that dystopian nightmare about trusting the fungus while Dennis Hopper searches for a meteroite. (Check out Episode 9 for that one). We are talking about the NEW NEW animated one that actually does a pretty decent job at portraying a video game about two brothers battling koopas, evil turtles, and Kongs. But a movie of this magnatiude requires some special guests to tackle it and boy do we have some fantastic guests. Cincinatti's own THE CINEMA GUYS stops by to talk Mario, Luigi, and Peach. Monty Python's: The Life of Brian (1979) - Movie Review - Episode 265
Happy Easter...Passover...or just day that happens to end in "Y". This week, we are celebrating one of the hallmark films of the 1970's that can be credited with birthing a great deal of the comedy that we all take for granted. 1979's Life of Brian is a brilliant satire that pokes fun at everything from the concept of religion to the tenets of politics. For it's time, the film was attacked by religious groups and even banned in the UK (a genuine Video Nasty). But has retained a status as an influentential piece of satire that has gone on to be referenced in everything from South Park to Family Guy. Fair Warning: We do go deep into frank discussions about religion and politics, as they are major themes within the film. DISCORD!!! Take the conversation further! Creed III (2023) - Movie Review - Episode 263
This week, we are a little bit late to the party on this film, but we had to do an episode on Leprechaun 3 last week in honor of St. Patrick's Day. That aside, we are talking about the newest entry into the long running Rocky Cinematic Universe, CREED III. The third outing of Michael B. Jordan's Adonis Creed as he fights for his legacy against the physical embodiment of his past in Johnathan Major's, "Diamond" Damian Anderson. This film marks Michael B. Jordan's directorial debut and based on the strength of this movie, we can't wait to see more. However, this film marks the first time that Sylvester Stallone's, Rocky, remains absent from the outing against the back drop of Hollywood infighting between Rocky Producer, Irwin Winkler and himself over the direction and rights to the franchise. But does this film even need Rocky? Tune in to find out. Articles Referenced: Sylvester Stallone Vs. Irwin Winkler - Sylvester Stallone Explains Why He Will 'Never' Watch Creed III- DISCORD!!! Zombi Holocaust AKA Doctor Butcher MD (1980) with Cam Schwarz of Rabid Dog Films - Episode 256
This week, we are joined by "Cannibal" Cam Schwarz of Rabid Dog Films and we're taking a look at the cult classic, "Zombi Holocaust" AKA "Doctor Butcher MD (Medical Deviant). Released in 1980, this low-budget Italian film follows a group of scientists and medical professionals as they investigate a series of mysterious disappearances on a remote island in the Pacific. But as they soon discover, the island is overrun with zombies created by a mad scientist experimenting with voodoo and cannibalism. While the acting and special effects may not be top-notch, "Zombi Holocaust" embraces its B-movie status and delivers a deliciously campy and entertaining experience. The film's pacing may be slow at times, but the cheesy charm more than makes up for it. Fans of bad movies, this is one you don't want to miss. Puppet Master (1989) - Movie Review - Episode 252
Ah the holidays, the time of the year when we all get to contribute to our capitalist hellscape of a society by buying our love with gifts…but have you ever wondered what would happen if your gifts came alive? If you thought that was a better plot for 1989’s Puppet Master you would be correct! Puppet Master introduces the world to Andre Toulon and his murderous puppets with fantastic Mortal Kombat names like “Blade” and “Leech Woman”. Unfortunately, this entry of Puppet Master also has a very convoluted plot dealing with a group psychic frienemies and zombies…kinda. It’s very rare that the first entry intro a franchise is weak with subsequent sequels being better. So grab your group of psychic frienemies as we take a trip to Bodega Bay to hang out with The Puppet Master. WE ARE ON TIKTOK! In an effort to appease our Gen Z, we are now on tiktok! The Exorcist (1973) - Movie Review - Episode 250
This week, we are celebrating our 250th episode with a look at what is arguably considered one of the scariest horror films of all time; The Exorcist. The 1973 movie by William Friedkin that was so terrifying that it led to people fainting in theaters and enraging the religious right in the early 70’s. But does this movie truly deserve the title of scariest film? And is it really Anti-Catholic? Well saddle up, cause we are going in deep as we analyze the world of Pazuzu with our review of The Exorcist. Dracula Dead And Loving It (1995) - Movie Review - Episode 249
This week, John and Brian travel to Transylvania to visit the crypt of Count Dracula….well not quite, we actually visit 1995 and Dracula’s crypt is full of Leslie Nielsen Naked Gun Jokes, Peter McNichol eating flies, and of course…an enema. We are talking about the horror parody from comedic master Mel Brooks, “Dracula Dead and Loving It.” A movie that feels like a weird sibling to 1974’s Young Frankenstein; a parody of both the early 90’s classic horror monster revival ushered in by 1992’s Bram Stoker’s Dracula and a comedic homage to Hammer Films. But unlike Young Frankenstein, this movie was panned by critics and marked the end of Mel Brooks line of parody films dating all the way back to the 70’s. But is this movie really that awful? Hellraiser Revelations (2022) - Movie Review - Episode 248
This week, Brian and John open the box and venture to the world of The Hellraiser Franchise. Now while we will eventually get to Hulu's Hellraiser Remake, we felt it was necessary to look at the absolute worst moment in the franchise. We are of course talking about 2011's Hellraiser Revelations. This movie is on a whole other level of bad; and we aren't just saying that cause it features "Fat/Wish.com/Great Value Pinhead". This movie was one in a series of copyright grabs by everyone's favorite creep, Harvey Weinstein and Dimension Films in an effort to retain the rights for profit. Fair warning...This particular episode of The Cinema Psychos Show is a bit extra explicit. So if you like our episodes where we are a bit more on the vulgar humor side, this one is for you. The Scream Franchise - Episode 247
This week as we drift out of our Halloween Hangover, John has forced Brian to finally confront his distaste for The Scream Franchise. Long time listeners of the podcast will know that despite Brian being an aficianado of cinematic terror, Wes Craven's 1996 meta-filled opus stands as a very consequential film in Brian's view of how the horror movie was changed irrevocably as a result of it's success. It feels like forever since we released an episode PsychosNation! But after a brief hiatus that saw us travel to be part of The Eerie Horror Fest, we are back with some amazing new episodes recorded inside the festival itself. This week, we are venturing to the bowels of streaming hell as we take a look at the newest cinematic offering from Rob Zombie with "The Munsters". A movie that as of late has hit a mixed bag of reviews with some finding charm in the bizarro color scheme, zany characters, and well....the fact it wasn't as terrible as Universal Studios's trailer department had made it appear. Others have of course, as with most of Rob Zombie's movies as of late, have found this to be a bizarro attempt at telling the story of The Munsters without truly understanding what The Munsters were about. Pink Rabbit (2022)- Movie Review- Episode 245
It's not everyday that we get an indie film to review. And this one comes straight from Germany! Filmmaker Zetkin Yikilmis unleashes her newest film, "PINK RABBIT". The film details the bizarre journey, concocted by an equally bizarre man dressed like a Pink Rabbit, that a young mother named Martha has to endure on the way home to her young son and husband. The movie pays homage to a number of bizarre and surreal tropes from other genre films while at the same time forcing us to ask the question of whether all the horrors that the Pink Rabbit puts Martha through are real or all in her head. Being an indie film, we definitely saw moments of greatness coupled with areas that we felt could be improved. But don't take our word for it. Pink Rabbit is available worldwide on Sept. 13 for you to check out for yourself. Check out the trailer for PINK RABBIT Be sure to look for Pink Rabbit when it drops on Amazon, Vudu, Itunes, and everywhere else on Sept. 13th from Gravitas Ventures! Nope (2022)- Movie Review- Episode 244
This week, we are taking a trip to Hollywood and symbolism in Director & modern horror maestro, Jordan Peele in his newest film, NOPE. Nope is an interesting movie as on the surface it feels very much like a throw back to the old school monster movies of the 70's and 80's. But in classic Jordan Peele style, there is way more meaning behind the film..and moments of levity between the terror. However, with a knock out film like his first film "GET OUT" and the "meh" reception to his second film, "US" how does "NOPE" stack up? Does it deliver the scares and laughs or does it fail to live up to expectations? MERCH AND ANNOUCEMENTS Our co-host, John Wooliscroft, has a brand new film channel on youtube.
